Why is Spurlock on our team???
So i'm getting sick of watching Percy Harvin, Ginn Jr, Sproles, Royal, amongst others return kicks for big yards or TD's.
This brings me to my question why the hell do we have a WR on the roster that was only known for returning kicks, all the while we are searching for a return man???
Seriously complain about whatever you want, O-line, QB, WR, RB, all the people starting i can't really argue with. i mean we can assume one QB might play better than the other, or why a O-lineman is playing instead of this or that one, but we can all agree the people returning kicks have been confusing as all hell, nor does anyone think that we have managed our return game properly.
Which brings me back to my question. Why is Spurlock on our team?
UPDATE!!!
I just realized a few things.
We released Rossum so we could keep Ziegler on the practice squad, which lead to Sheets getting picked up off the practice squad. We then let Battle return punts and Walker who both fumbled (walker we had no TO's to challenge) and Battle multiple fumbles, one which people feel like costs us the game.
NOW, we lost Clements for a few games if not the season and we are left with what exactly? so basically this was all so we could keep Ziegler.

This should really be an on going thread. Should have been posted all of the prior 8 weeks. Spurlock must be the best scout team player ever cause nothing else adds up.

We need this guy retunring kicks and punts, because his not doing anything else. They had an 80 million dollar man returning punts, what gives? Make the cheap guy return punts/kicks. Besides this offense insn’t built to go 80, 90 yards for a score. Having a good return game would greatly help this offense.

calling him the $80 M dollar man is misleading
he was a somewhat highly paid veteran who was not covering that well at corner and now does not appear to be very important to the 49ers future.
On the other hand, Brown looked pretty good today and he is a 3rd year…

Just maybe...
Just maybe Michael Spurlock lacks the footspeed? I think we need somebody with reasonable footspeed and experience at the kick returner position. I don’t think our kick returns could have been any better than they would have been with Allen Rossum returning them.
We need another Dexter Carter, is what we need.

I didn't forget.
Between him and Ricky Waters in the 90’s…its hard to forget the turnovers.
So they put Brandon Jones in to return the punt and he decided to field it inside the 5 yard line? C’mon man.

Of course you are supposed to let those bounce
but it could have been worse…it could hae taken a funky bounce and been downed at the 1 or 2. So at least he caught it with breathing room. Besides, give the guy a break. That was afterall only his 2nd return. I think he will do well.
Sing did mention Battle though and said he had confidence in him which really worries me.

Spurlock
isn’t good enough to make the team at WR, and isn’t as reliable as Michael Robinson in holding on to the ball and making the right decisions. He’s here as a reserve — period.

Talks about how he has fumble issues. I’m sure you saw how lost he looked in the Taser this year right? I think he fumbled one snap, and bobbled the other snap in 2 tries.
by hudd07 on Nov 2, 2009 5:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought he only had 2 tries
and taking a snap from center isn’t the same as catching a kick or a punt.

Reminds me...
… of the XBOX360 version of Madden10. The 49ers’ “wildcat” formation only has runs. What’s up with that?
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 10:01 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah.
I saw the formation when I first got it and was all excited about having Battle and Robinson play back there, only to find out that it’s nothing but an unconventional strong/weak I-form/split-set where it gives the RB options to either run or pitch the ball.
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 11:47 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well at least you have the Wildcat
I’m still stuck on Madden 09 without it. :-(
by Brendan Scolari on Nov 3, 2009 2:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Up until..
… this season, I’ve been playing Madden on the Wii, and the shift to XBox360 has removed some of my favorite formations/plays. The 49ers playbook doesn’t have a I-form where both WRs are on the weak-side of the formation. That was one of my favorites.
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 3:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why not just use a different playbook?
I use the Packers on offense because I like their formations. Also, the default Niners playbook for ’09 is all singleback WR-heavy sets because of Martz. ;-)
Also, how is Madden on the Wii? I’ve never played it on Wii, only PS2 and X-Box (and the next gen stuff obviously).
by Brendan Scolari on Nov 3, 2009 3:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know why I never use another playbook. For the past four to five years, the 49ers playbook has remained (virtually) unchanged on the Wii/PS2, so I guess it’s a matter of not wanting to pick up a new playbook (I pick plays subconsciously and have audibles set up that I change to). I guess I just don’t want to create new muscle memory.
As for the Madden on the Wii, I can only speak for up to Madden09. As long as you take it for what it’s worth and don’t expect the moon (like you could with the more powerful systems), I think Madden on the Wii is fun. I haven’t played this year’s version much more than a couple minutes at the local Best Buy (and I didn’t really like the way it looks, as they redid the player models).
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 3:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh yeah
I think I remember seeing the new player models, they’re fairly cartoony right? Looked stupid.
Do you use the audibles that let you stay in the formation your in? For a long time I never used those, but now I hardly ever audible out of formation. It lets you have basically an unlimited amount of audibles and it’s hard for the opponent to know when you’ve changed your play.
by Brendan Scolari on Nov 3, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I have yet to play witht he audibles...
… in Madden10, as I’m still trying to figure out what plays I actually like in Madden10. It seems that the A.I. picks up on if you start to call a play too often in one game.
However, on the Wii version, I purposely had three audibles from the I-form and two from standard singleback (3WR/1TE/1RB). I love when the opponent has no idea if I just audibled to a new play or just audibled to reset the play.
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 4:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Ah I see
But you know you can use like the right joystick (at least on PS2) to audible to a different play in the same formation, so it’s liek each formation has 3 plays you can audible to without changing your look.

Why is every week the same words out of your mouth? “I am going to find out what this team is made of this week.” Well how about you find out what you are made of and the rest of your coaching staff and figure out how to win f’ing ball games because game management is TERRIBLE!!! i dont know why he is still on our team, plus i saw brandon jones back there also, i mean damn when i saw the preseason he was lookin like a decent receiever yet coach sing n coach raye have not used brandon jones at all, what gives on that? nice free agent pick up just to sit on the bench, and come on its obvious that spread offense passin is the way to go now that alex smith is back there, he can move the ball as we saw last week and this week. also agree on nasty nate should have not been back there also, what gives man, this might come back to haunt the niners later down the stretch in the season.

He’s only now getting back into game shape. Plus they signed him before they knew if Bruce was coming back and before Crabtree fell to them in the draft. I think he’ll get used a lot more next season, after Bruce leaves, as a 3rd WR behind Crabtree and Morgan.

I wouldn't compare Spurlcok to Harvin and Ginn
In light of their being #1 draft choices. But I also have no idea why he’s on the roster. And I’m happy with Robinson on KO returns and Clements (if healthy) on punt return. I’m even find with Jones returning punts if someone could remind him to not catch the ball inside the 5 yard line.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
by SpurredOn on Nov 1, 2009 8:55 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
oh no comparison
Just seeing those players that make such an impact in the game, and then we just kind of act like the KR/PR is kind of irrelevant is upsetting to me.
Hell Harvin has a bunch of TD’s on returns. The vikings obviously feel like that is something worth addressing, the Niner’s on the other hand throw Walker/Robinson back there because they get good field position.
While we let Rossum go who is the only real home run hitter we’ve had.

I hope it's an offseason priority
I don’t want to use a 1st round pick on a player for this role but a second round CB who is a great return man or middle round pick that could be a change of pace RB (like Sproles) who has also had a great college career returning kicks would be be welcome. For all the Favre hype, you could argue that they’d have two additional losses (SF and GB today) without Harvin’s KO returns. He immediately takes back momentum to say nothing of the pressure he places on the coverage units.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I have been asking myself this question every week.
I am getting really sick of the extremely poor coaching week in and week out. You should keep this thread going and we also need to start an official thread on the calling for Jimmy Rayes head!!
by jonesin25 on Nov 1, 2009 9:40 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Agree with what so many others are saying.
Jimmy Raye is 50 years behind. He is coaching the same kind of football he played at Michigan State in the 60s. Run up the middle on 1st down. If you get at least two yards consider it a success and do it again, then on 3rd down pass because you will probably be faced with 3rd and long. If you get stuffed on 1st down and have 2nd and 10 or longer, run a draw because you might fool the defense. Do this many many times, you have to be patient, because if you do it often enough it will work, I promise. Of course, it may take a few decades.

Michael Robinson
is the ideal kickoff returner on this team because he is so reliable. He almost never fumbles and doesn’t make silly mental mistakes. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have himself as the upback. Michael’s great blocking is what used to spring Rossum. His double block vs. Arizona last season sprung Rossum for a TD on the opening kickoff. MRob is the ONLY back on the roster who we can feel confident will give us decent field position without a stupid mistake.
I like Jones as a punt returner but fielding a punt on his own 3-yard line wasn’t exactly brilliant.

Good question
Although I thought the worry with Coffee’s blocking was more about the fear he wouldn’t pick up the correct blitzer not ability. But I see why coaches don’t like rookies in key ST roles unless they are dynamic at returning the ball.

he wouldn’t pick up the correct blitzer
All special teams players are blitzers. I’m no expert on ST blocking, but it’s a far more chaotic situation than offense or defense, and I’d be truly surprised if people had “blocking assignments.” If they don’t have assignments, you have to decide who to block.
