What Did You Really Expect?
Come on guys and gals what did you really expect of this game? While I was unable to watch the game I did keep up to date with the game thread with my mobile phone and I must say I'm rather disappointed in some of you. I understand that we want the the 49ers to win every game that they play but seriously?
How many of you actually picked the 49ers to win this game? Tell the truth please because if you picked them to win you would be the only person to have done so. I personally am rather impressed with the 49ers this week because I firmly believe that the colts are the best team in the league and OUR 49ers had the chance to win the game.
Why get upset with the play calling? By now you should know what to expect from Raye. Play it safe and keep the 49ers in the game. And that is what he does each and every week other than the blowout game versus Atlanta. The 49ers will get better and I believe that they did improve.
Look at the bright side Michael Crabtree is the real deal. He had 6 catches for I think 89 yards the only minus is no td's yet but with no time to sit in the pocket for Alex Smith we as 49er fans shouldn't expect to see him score deep anytime soon. Alex Smith looks like a different guy back there and that is good for the 49ers. The colts game planned against him and he threw for almost 200 yards with little to no blocking. Also look at what the defense was able to do; they held the colts to 18 points! That is pretty impressive and the 49ers will win the next game versus the Titans.
Stop beating yourself up over the 49ers losing another game. Growing pains my friends that is what it is called; if the 49ers would have played the colts last year it would have been a disaster. The 49ers will get better an eventually the 49ers will be able to win those games against the upper echelon teams in the league. Did the 49ers let another one get away with mental let downs and lack of creativity on offense? that is a strong possibility but the fact is great teams don't do that and the 49ers aren't a great team; they are in fact a team with a good defense and a below average offense that makes the 49ers as a whole just an average team.
So all the real fans please stand up and then sit back down and straddle yourself in for the rest of the season because this is how the rest of the season will go. And if you can't handle the truth of what the 49ers are this year I advise you to either jump on the saints bandwagon, stop watching the 49ers games or simply look across the bay and remind yourself that it could always be worse.

it’s still a winnable division so I’m not ready to panic yet.

agreed manic
still winnable and still room for massive improvements which I hope comes.
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
you should have recorded it (and then watched it) or watched it before making a post about expectations.
i had no hope for a W here, and to be honest it looked very achievable through most of the game.
any time you hold the Colts under 20, you've played a good game defensively
Now about that offense…
Morgan breaks through in 2009!

disagree
i dont need to watch a game to talk about expectations especially when ive watched every game this year. it seemed very much in reach to win. expectations should be high but it should realistic too.
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
I dont know..
I think I pick the Niners to win every game because I am a Homer type fan, which is the only kind of fan to be imo
ya i agree, i actually thought the niners could win this game
I belive anything is possible in the NFL and the niners can be in any game woth their defense
wll you two are the chosen few
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
nothing wrong with being a homer
but thats just not realistic

i appreciate your feelings and I am with you in spirit
next year i believe that it will be true.
With our new OT and better blocking we will go all the way!
For sure next we will be a force to reckoned with.

I expected a WIN, since I seen the schedule.
I have always(this season) picked the 49ers to uupset this Colts team, because of their inept ability to stop the Run. We had the damn lead for most of the game and still passed more than we ran. Utter stupidity on Rayes part.
"Optimist Prime"
"Child Please" -Ochocinco
They have played bad teams
We ran two draw plays and every passing down their ends are wide and outside on the rush. And that is why they are ineffective against the run. Teams get behind are don’t get out far enough and panic and overexhert themselves passing. They were screaming for a draw to be ran OA means squat. they suck at stopping the run.
"Optimist Prime"
"Child Please" -Ochocinco
Of course, DVOA controls for opponents, and they're still very close to 0%. :)
And it also accounts for situations. It’s a nice stat that way, in that when teams have to pass because they’re behind it accounts for that, only comparing against other running plays.
agreed with ending statement...
stupid to only run so little with the lead but the 49ers have not shown the ability to run consistently which means we do not have the personell to run like coach sings wants to.

Weren't we actually running pretty good overall?
From what I saw in the stats Gore and even Coffee had some good runs. Could be wrong though.

faith
is what i had, hoping they would win. if we had a better OC, we could have got the win. i just have to hope that the defense can keep this type of play up all year & Raye can somehow do a better job of trying to be like norv turner
go niners!!! airday allday
i have faith too
but sadly i fear we are stuck with raye next year too. i dont think nor can do much better with a 2nd rate o line…except pass heavy and often, why raye wont is beside us all
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
Play it safe and keep the 49ers in the game.
At halftime they had 14 points, at the end of the game they still had 14 points. All playing it safe did was give the niners a moral defeat.
yeah and I hate it as much as you

A FEW MORE CHANGES
LIKE I SAID BEFORE SPREAD OFFENSE UNTIL WE CAN DRAFT A FEW MORE O-LINEMAN, PUT SPURLOCK AT K-O-R’S AND KEEP SMITH IN SHOT-GUN UNTIL I TURN 52 NEXT SEPT. HAVE HIM ROLE OUT AWAY FROM THE INSIDE RUSH 5 MAN SPREAD WITH NO HUDDLE AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, GET TURNER AWAY FROM SD BECAUSE IT NEVER WORKED OUT FOR HIM AS HEAD COACH BUT HE IS AN OUTSTANDING OC THAT CAN LEAD SMITH, DAVIS, GORE, CTREE, MORGAN. BATTLE FINES THE GAPS ON THE D-SIDE. BUT THE SCHEDULE IS IN OUR FAVOR AND THIS IS ONLY SMITH’S 2ND GAME, GIVE HIM TIME. WE WILL WIN OUR DIVISION. CUT AND DRY. BOOK IT DANO
The ALL CAPS HURTS MY FRIGGING HEAD
So I don’t read them. No caps is much less annoying, but still sucks. Capital and lower case letters exist for a reason. Please use them.

In all honesty, i expected a blow out, and you know, when the day came, i had a good feeling there was an upset on the way. I’m somewhat proud of how they played, but i just want to see the offense open up more because it looks like he plays SOOOOO much better in the spread or when they open it up
Maybe
It’s not that we need more passes (we passed more than run in this game), perhaps it’s more a case of when we pass and we certainly need more creativity, more imagination, more deception, more miss-direction. The running part of the offense is just too easy to defend.
the run is needed to defend the pass
without it Smith would be on his back all day. Even with it, his protection is about the worst in the league. I think the run pass ratio on 1st down was about 50-50.
I agree with this fan post from ninerfanNVA
The 49ers are realistically in the last year of a rebuilding cycle. They are doing a good job with the skill positions and defense, but are definitely lacking in temrs of O line.
Offensive line is, obviously, critical. Without Keith Farnhorst, Randy Cross, etc., there is no Joe Montana.
Get real people. Peyton Manning would not look so go playing with our O line. He would not be a happy camper. Alex Smith is playing phenomenally well considering how little time the 49ers have to allow their offensive plays to develop.
If Raye is still calling boring plays next year, then I will criticize. Right now, it is about stayin’ healthy, developing young players and Oline improvement.
The realistic way to rebuild Oline is to draft a dominant, big-stud left tackle with our 1st pick, move Staley back to right tackle, etc. Add one great franchise OT and everyone looks and plays better.
What part of “rebuilding year” do you guys commenting here not understand? Do you really think that this O line can drive a real playoff team?, or that Young or Montana (or Favre or either Manning) would do any better with that level of harrassment from defensive linemen and blitzers. Today we had to give help to our left tackle on almost every play pass protection play… It is not just about sacks and statistics. There is a systematic inability to prtect and allow time for plays to develop. They would not dare even call a play with a Walsh-Montana style 7 step drop.
Given how little time defenses have to cover them, I don’t think Crabtree and Davis could be any more impressive. Same for Alex Smith.
Yeah agree completely once we get our o line fixed we can become legit on offense and give Smith time throw and give gore some lanes to run in

Lets also look at the schedule
The 49ers have gone through a stretch were they have faced the upper tier of NFL offenses. The schedule finally gets easier. Both the 49ers defense and offense should perform better against statistically average offenses. The defense will give up less yards and better control field position. The offense will have less pressure to produce and should be getting the ball in good scoring position, instead of pinned constantly behind the 20 yard line.
The offense wasn’t all that bad today despite the 14 point total. They ran the ball better rushing for over 100 yards. Alex passed around 200 yards despite the 49ers WRs getting nothing going in the middle of the field. If they weren’t forced to start at their own 10 yard line the entire game a few of those drives would have resulted in FGs. Chilo only flubbed one play today and BARRY SIMS played a decent football game.
Winnable games are coming up and it’s time for the 49ers to fatten up their record for a late season push.
Yeah thats true we just went thru the hell zone of our schedule and we hanged in there for the most part. Barry Sims did impress today I was shocked. Plus the Cards just got thier (site decorum) handed to them so we are still in this

In deference to LT play
Today we had to give help to our left tackle on almost every play pass protection play…
We did have the backup LT in. I agree with you on the Stud OT in the first idea (maybe the second 1st round pick depending how the board plays out) said it tons of times if we come out with our first 3 picks to be OT, DT, and a nice DB I’d be ecstatic. Sando on ESPN called Staley one of the best OT’s in the division and I somewhat agree and if you put him at RT he’d be Mr Studly of the Studlys. Looking at the overall draft board i(though it’s early) t’s a nice set again of OTs and even the lower 1st Round there’s good guys like Charles Brown from USC.. Imagine if we picked up OT, DT and DB with first 3 picks then with our 3rd Rounder picked something like an OG or Rushing LB.

Actually, as best I remember...
Walsh tended to prefer 3 step drops. The plays developed quickly. Walsh wasn’t Martz. Typically, pass plays were designed to go 5-15 yards. When they went for more yardage than that, most of the time it was from runs after the catch. Aside from that, a good OT would definitely help, but it won’t salvage the guard play. They routinely get beat like a rug. Given the running game seems to mostly be between the tackles, that’s a disaster. Since I think the guards need to be more athletic, maybe a tackle could be moved inside, as the Cowpies did with Larry Allen. I wonder what would happen if Pashos were re-signed and used as a guard?
totally agree
The fact of the matter is we are not a championship team with that offensive Loline. I expect the 49ers to go 8-8 at least 9-7 at best. That was my prediction at the beginning of the year and changed it slighlty better after the first 3 games due to some sippin of the kool aid.
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
I agree
And I expected the Niners to win. Genuinely so when looking at the past opponents and believing that this team would will it self to a victory and avoid three straight losses. I’m highly disappointed and do not want to read heavy complaining from anyone who thought the Nines would be blown out. If someone thought that then they should be happy with this moral victory.
The Niners should’ve won. Again. But it’s not any one persons fault. They, as a team, keep missing that one play. And they’re certainly better (or the Colts are not as good) as many Niners fans think.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
i didn't think
the 49ers would get blown out of the water. I did think that the 49ers would lose by about 10 points. Never once did I think the 49ers would win this game because I know what teams are better than the 49ers. It wasn’t until the game started and the 49ers went up 14-3 that I started to think the 49ers had a chance but what I also knew was 14 points was not going to be enough.
The truth of the matter is I don’t think the 49ers offense will ever score more than 21 points in a game. Anything more than that will have to come from the defense or special teams.
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
oh whatever it was
14-6?
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
That was no attack at you
Hope you didn’t take it as such. I was agreeing with your post while stating that I don’t like reading complaining from anyone who had posted about the Niners getting blown out. That was separate from you.
I actually never thought they’d lose until we got behind and then had to punt after being in FG range. Not scoring on that drive caused me to see us losing for the first time.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
The Niners just went through the strongest part of their schedule. They play the division rivals again, which i could easily see 3-0 or 2-1 in those. Then they play Jaguars, Titans, Lions, which should all be wins. They also play the Packers, Bears and Eagles, which coming out of those games i’d be happy with 1-3 or 2-1 at best. So from all that the Niners could come out with 6 wins at the worst or 8 at the best. So overall their record would be 9-7 at worst or 11-5 at best. I’m guessing 10-6, which would easily win the West.
They could easily lose all those games as well or run the table. These are just my expectations.
I'm sticking to 8-8 at this point.
That’s about where I’ve been all along. They’ll go 2-1 in the remaining division games, I think. 0-3 vs. Packers, Bears, and Eagles. This year’s team appears to be well enough coached not to lay eggs against genuinely terrible teams, so I’ll agree with you on Jags, Titans, and Lions. I’d thought the team might be able to stagger into the playoffs with an 8-8 record, but the Cardinals seem to be righting their ship. It’s not going to be enough.
Then again...
Warner did have a dreadful game today. If that’s a sign that he’s suddenly noticed he’s old, 9-7 is within reach, and even 8-8 could make the playoffs. I’ll cross my fingers.
Lose to the Bears?
Here on a short week? I don’t see that. I’ve counted that as a win since the schedule came out. Plus the players will want to win that for Sing, being that it’s his old team.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
true
the toughest part of the schedule just ended. The 49ers will be playing the titans, bears, jags, cardinals and lions all in that order. Can the 49ers not win all those games? Those are the games I EXPECT to see the 49ers win but not this game. The 49ers can win all the upcoming games which will put the team at 8-4 coming out of that stretch.
won’t be easy but as Sean Connery use to say “It’s doable”
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
I picked the Niners to win
49ers @ Indianapolis – 28 – 27**
I always pick them to win because that’s what I want. I don’t always believe they will win but darnit I’ll pick em. I didn’t really like our chances going in to Sunday, I mean it’s Peyton Manning and the Colts, an elite team, but we were grasping to a 14 – 9 lead at halftime….are you kidding me? We could have beat them, our Defense was playing that good. Peyton Manning had thrown a TD pass in the 10 consecutive games before Sunday, had been sacked twice all season coming into Sunday. The 49ers got him three times ( from NFL.com). The Colts had to bust out a trick play that they haven’t used in 9 years to score!
Plain and simple the D was amazing and once a gain the offense did us no favors. If the Offense was allowed to play the whole game like they did in that 2 minute drill we might have beat them by multiple TD’s. So what I really expected was a 49ers victory 28 – 27. Which could have been entirely possible.
**actual week 8 prediction game prediction that will get me 0 points this week
"Pat is still just scratching the surface." - Coach Singletary on LB Patrick Willis
we just lost at Colts by 4 points.
If we are staying the same or slightly improving each week, why can’t we go undefeated in the remaining games?
That should be the logic of everyone that predicted an upset over the Colts, and even now after that upset almost happened, I expect the team to continue improving and will be playing against teams that are probably not as good as the Colts.
I think the 49ers are improving
each and every week and this is a team that should have 2 less losses on their record but this team is young and continues to make mistakes at critical times. It is a learning process that all teams go through when they are on the verge. I feel pretty much like Coach Sing when it comes to this team….they are so close to being a good team…right now they are average.
The 49ers should be able to win the majority of the games remaining. The eagles frighten me the most out of all the remaining games and the way that Kurt Warner played on sunday I’m a little more convinced that the 49ers will sweep the conference games.
And if that is the case then all the 49ers need to do is squeak out at least 1 more victory somewhere. Is it possible to win all your conference games and still lose the division? weird and maybe stupid question but say the cardinals go 9-7 and the 49ers go 8-8 but the conference victories go to the 49ers….the best over all record goes to the playoffs right?
Boy that would really suck
"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"
and before anyone says anything
this scenario can play out.
The remaining schedule for the cardinals is as follows
Bears, hawks, rams, titans, vikings, 9ers,lions, rams. Maybe I’m a little paranoid but the cards should beat the hawks, rams, lions, rams and possibly the titans…that gives them a 9-7 record if they lose the other 3 games.
The 49ers have the ability to go 10-6 with the remaining schedule but as we have seen we just don’t know what will happen from sunday to sunday.
