The Titans/Niners play-by-play

Fooch's Note: As those who have read these posts can attest, smileyman has putting together an extremely impressive rundown of the 49ers play-by-play each of the last few weeks.  I think it's only fair to move these to the front page as he posts them.  Given the length, I've moved it almost entirely after the jump.

Here is this week's play-by-play. Screen shots are taken from the NFL's Game Rewind, so some of them are a little blurry. I'll have comments when we're done.

Star-divide

1st drive
1st play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. TE and WR split. WR on left goes in motion, quick pass to Davis for no gain.

2nd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. Davis is lined up in down position, Walker is lined in up positnion on left side. Screen pass to Gore for 35 yards. 15 yard unnecessary roughness tacked on at the end for a 50 yard gain.

3rd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. WR are lined up on left, both TE on right side. Gore about 7 yards back. Pass to Delanie Walker was way too high. No gain

4th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. 2 WR lined up on left side. 1 on right side in down position. TE on right side is Walker who goes in motion, then cuts back. Pass for 13 yards. Alex locked in on him the entire time.

Delaniewalker_medium

5th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 TE, 1 WR on left side, 1 TE in down position on right, and 1 WR on right. In shotgun. Good protection. Overthrows Davis.

6th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 WR, 1 TE on each side. Walker comes in motion to left side and lays a pancacke block. Gore gets 6 yards on a beautifully designed and run play. You've got the RG pulling, and everybody shifting their blocks to the right side. Both Davis and Walker get great blocks in.

1strun-1_medium

7th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. Both TE and 1 WR are on right side of line. Alex actually has pretty good protection but starts running too early. In the crossing route Morgan gets shoved into Bruce (who wasn't paying attention to what was going on) disrupting both routes. Smith scrambles for a 3 yard gain.

8th play--Delay of game

9th play--FG

2nd Drive
1st play--2 TE, 2 WR. 1 WR on each side. 1 TE on left in up position. 1 TE on right in down position. Walker goes in motion to right side and Gore gets 13 yards on a pitch to the left.

2nd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. TE on right side, WR on left side. Everybody goes out. Gore waits for a couple seconds then comes out. Baas just stands around and doesn't touch anybody while Alex takes a sack.

3rd play--2 TE, 2 WR. 2 TE and 1 receiver on right side. 1 WR on left side. Alex in shotgun. Quick pitch to Crabtree but it's too high.

4th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. 2 WR on right side. TE on left side in down position. Alex in shotgun. Quick, short drop to Crabtree for 4 yards. We needed 16 yards here, why design a play for 4 yards?

3rd Drive
1st play--2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 FB. TE in down position on left side. 1 WR comes in motion to left side, then back to right side to line up right behind RT. Obvious run situation--Titans have 8 guys in the box. Gore up the middle for 2

2nd play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 1 WR on right, one on left side. Davis in down position on right side, Walker lined up in slot on left. Pressure almost immediately. Ball thrown away

3rd play--2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB. Coffee and Gore lined up on either side of Alex who is in shotgun. Everybody goes out. Interception. Alex was staring down his receiver again. The ball is a little high. This is one that Crabtree needs to let go, or if he tips it he needs to go back to the ball and fight for it.

4th Drive
1st play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. 2 WR on right side. TE on right side in down position.
Pass to Bruce for 3 yards

2nd play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. WR split out. TE split on either side of the line close in. Hand off to Gore up the middle for six yards. Great job blocking all the way around.

3rd play--1 WR, 2 TE, 1 FB, 1 RB. Both TE lined up on right side in down position. Fake the hand off, Smith scrambles for 8 yards.

4th play--2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 FB. TE on left side in down position, both WR on right side. 40 yard pass to Vernon Davis.

5th play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. Both TE on left side in down position. Both WR on right side. Walker comes in motion to right side, Davis goes deep. Incomplete pass. Defense called for offsides.

6th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 WR lined up far right. Crabtree lined up close in. Davis lined up just to the right and behind Snyder on right side. Walker goes in motion out to far left. Gore right up the middle for 5 yards. Crabtree puts in a great block on his man.

7th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 TE and 1 WR on each side (but lined up close). Davis in down position. Walker goes in motion to left side. Gore off left side for touchdown (made a nice cut too).

5th Drive
1st play--2 WR, 2 TE. Both TE in down position on left side. 1 WR out on right, one close in. Close in WR goes in motion to the center then comes back. Fakes the hand off to Gore and then dumps it to him for 8 yards. (Probably could've run it for that much too as there was a great running lane there.)

2nd play--2 WR, 2 TE. WR split on either side. TE split on either side, though lined up for pass protection. Alex fumbles the ball. This one is on Alex--he had someone grabbing his jersey before the ball got knocked away. He needs to protect it better.

3rd play--3 WR, 1 TE. 2 WR on left side, 1 on right side. TE on right side in down position. Draw with Coffee for 4 yards.

6th Drive
1st play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 2 TE and 1 WR lined up on right side. 1 WR on left. Gore up the middle for 9 yards.

2nd play--2 Wr, 2 TE, 1 RB. TE and WR split on either side. Encroachment on defense.

3rd play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 2 WR lined up left, one TE lined up far right, one on right side in down position. Crabtree comes in motion to right side and Smith threads the needle with a great throw and catch for 9 yards.

4th play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. Split on either side again. TE on right side in down position. Run up the middle for 4 yards.

5th play--2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB. In shotgun. Gore goes out into the flat. Pass to Crabtree for 17 yards.

6th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. 2 WR on left side. TE on right side just off RT. Pass complete across the middle to Davis for 5 yards. In shotgun

7th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. Incomplete to Bruce on left side of the field. The ball was overthrown.

8th play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. Both TE on left side, both WR on right side. In shotgun. Quick throw to Davis for 13 yards.

9th play-- 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on right side. TE in down position on left. Gore in backfield goes out in motion. Pass to Gore for 8 yards.

10th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on left side. TE on righ side lined up right next to RT. Smith avoids the pressure and throws a 12 yard TD pass to Jason Hill.

7th Drive
1st play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 1 WR lined up right side. 2 TE on left side 1 in down position. Run off right side for 2 yards.

2nd play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 1 WR lined up on right. 2 TE on left side both in up position. In shotgun. Gore up the middle for 4 yards.

3rd play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. In shotgun. TE and WR on right, 2 WR on left. Pass to Jason Hill across the middle for 5 yards.

4th play--3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB. 1 TE and 2 WR lined up on right. 1 WR and RB on left. In shotgun. Offsides called on Davis.

5th play--2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 FB. 2 WR on left side. TE on right side in down position. Pass to Gore in the middle for 7 yards.

6th play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. Incomplete pass to Morgan (I think this ball was catchable).

7th play--2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB. In shotgun. Both RB in backfield. 1 WR on right side. Pressure, incomplete pass (thrown away).

8th Drive
1st play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 1 WR on left side. 1 TE on right side in down position. He then steps back a yard in up position and goes in motion to left side. Pass complete for 13 yards.

2nd play--2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 FB. WR lined up right. TE lined up left. Blitz comes and Hope is untouched and gets the sack.

3rd play--2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB. 1 WR out on left side. Both TE and 1 WR on right side. In shotgun. Sack. Ball ruled a fumble. This one is al on Simms--he was simply overpowered.

9th Drive
1st play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. TE and WR split. Incomplete pass to Morgan (who really should have had this one as it bounced off his hands)

2nd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 WR on left side. 1 TE on right side in down position, 1 lined up just back in up position. He goes in otion to left side. Pitch to the left that gets no where. Offsides called against defense.

3rd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. TE on right side goes in motion to left. TE on left is in down position. Run. Whistled dead--offsides on Snyder.

4th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 1 WR left. Both TE on right side in up position but close to the line. pass to Gore for 9 yards.

5th play--2 TE, 1 WR, 1 FB. Both TE on right side in down position. Up the middle for no gaine. Offsides on defense.

6th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. TE and WR split. Both TE are in up position right behind tackles. Walker goes in motion from the right side to the left. End around for morgan for 11 yards.

7th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. Both TE are on right side. 1 WR on left side. Davis is in down position. Walker is in up. Run off left guard for 2 yards.

8th play--2 TE, 2 WR. TE on left side in down position. TE in right side goes in motion then comes back. Complete to Davis for 7 yards.

9th play--2 TE, 1 WR, 1 RB, 1 FB. WR on left side. 1 TE in down position on right. 2nd TE in down position behind the LOS. He goes in motion to the left side.Gore up the middle for 2 yards.

10th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. Gore lined up right next to Smith. Morgan right behind RT. Davis in up position, Walker just to the right and behind. Run off RT for 13 yards.

11th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. WR split. Walker on right side in up position. Davis on left side in down. Walker goes in motion. Run whistled dead. Davis called for offsides (second offsides of the day)

12th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. WR split. Davis in down position on right side. Walker goes in motion from right side to left. Nice screen to Coffee called back for illegal man downfield on Baas.

13th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 TE and 1 WR on right side. Davis comes in and then goes back out.Gore off LG for 7 yards.

14th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on left. TE in down position on right. Screen to Davis for 7 yars.

15th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on left side. 1 WR on left goes in motion. Pass to Morgan for 4 yards. (I thought this was a bad spot and we should've had the 1st down here).

16th play--2 TE, 1 WR, 1 RB, 1 FB. WR on left side. Both TE in down position on right. Gore off left side for 5 yards.

17th play--1 TE, 2 WR, 2 RB. WR on right side. TE on left in down position. Handoff to Robinson for -1 yard (didn't like this call--Gore is on the field and you give it to Robinson?)

18th play--1 TE, 2 WR, 2 RB. 1 WR on left. 1 TE/1 WR on right. Pass to Robinson for 4 yards.

19th play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. TE on right side in down position. 2 WR on left. Incomplete pass to Gore (this should have been pass intereference).

Passinterference_medium

20th play--FG.

10th Drive
1st play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 2 TE and 1 WR on right side. Walker goes in motion to left. Pass to Gore for 2 yards.

2nd play--2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB. 1 TE and 1 WR on each side. Walker comes in motion from right side. Interception. Alex stares down the receiver the entire way.

Interception2-1_medium

11th Drive
1st play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. 2 WR on right side. Pass to Morgan intercepted and returned for TD. The angle on the rewind is bad. I can't tell if the ball bounces off Morgan's hands or if the defender gets there and maks the play. Either way this one isn't on Smith. I can't get a good screenshot of this one (too blurry). if anyone else can I'd love to be able to get this one added.

12th Drive
1st play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. TE on right side. In shotgun. Complete to Davis for 5 yards.

2nd play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. TE on right side. In shotgun. Complete to Hill for 30 yards (He did a really good job getting breaking two tackles and getting major yards after the catch)

3rd play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR and 1 TE on left side. Offsides on defense.

4th play--same formation as 3rd play of this drive. Incomplete pass to Crabtree. (Niners were really slow in getting the next play off)

5th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on left side. TE and WR on right. Pass to Davis for 4 yards.

6th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 1 WR on left side. 2 WR, and TE on right. Incomplete pass to Crabtree.

7th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 1 WR and 1 TE on right side (TE in down position). 2 WR on left side. Complete to Davis for 8 yards plus 15 yards for face mask.

8th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. WR and TE on left side. 2 WR on right. Incomplete pass (knocked down by defensive lineman).

9th play--same formation as 8th play. Pass to Morgan is too high.

10th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 1 WR on left. 2 WR and TE lined up on right in a triangle (really). Complete to Morgan for 4 yards.

11th play--1 TE, 3 WR, 1 RB. In shotgun. 2 WR on left. TE on right in down position. Pass to Gore for 6 yards.

12th play--Same formation as 11th play. Pass to Jason Hill for a touchdown.

Some observations.

1. We run a ton of 2 TE, 2 WR sets, but they're lined up all over. Sometimes they're split out, sometimes they're down, sometimes they're crouched behind the linemen, etc. We also run all sorts of plays from that formation. Take a look at this for an example.

Formation_medium

2. Chris Johnson burned us on the outside all day. We really need more speed in the secondary. Patrick Willis probably saved a couple of touchdown runs by chasing Johnson down on Sunday.

3. Alex Smith has a rocket arm. He throws every ball hard. He needs to develop a lighter touch--not every throw needs to be a fastball. If he does this he'll stop overthrowing as much and he'll have fewer tipped balls.

4. Alex tends to lock into his receiver early on. He's got to change that bad habit quickly (though he did do a better job in the latter part of the game).

5. Alex does a great job with the hard count. The Titans had something like 5 offsides penalties called on them (and I think they could've been called for more as they were lining up really close most of the game).

6. Our run game looked really good on Sunday. Good blocking. Well designed plays by Raye that were well-executed by the O-line.

7. The pass protection still needs help. Alex only had 2 or 3 seconds to throw the ball most times.

8. As much time as Delanie Walker plays I'm surprised he doesn't have a better stat line. Davis is clearly the start but you think we'd rotate Walker in more in pass catching situations.

9. Isaac Bruce looks like he's mentally out of it. He's not putting in a good effort in running his routes nor is he trying to go for the balls coming his way.

10. Our offense looked really good. We had some great drives and mixed it up pretty good. I think Raye did a mostly great job of playcalling (there were a few notable exceptions). It seems as if the offense is starting to pick up on his schemes now and it's working pretty good I think.

No kidding

Great post. You can tell it takes a lot of time, but you do a great job with these.

Mistakes were made, mistakes happen. Aside from the turnovers, this was the best offensive game as far as moving up and down the field. In all honestly, I do not believe Hill can do that. There was a 8+ minute drive. No way Hill can sustain that long of a drive, there is a reason why we lead in 4 and outs.

I’m still a supporter of Smith, til the end of the season, and supporter of the Niners always.

Let’s go niners. Get back on the winning track.

You have a future as a quality control coach in the NFL.

That said, I like this comment:

3. Alex Smith has a rocket arm. He throws every ball hard. He needs to develop a lighter touch—not every throw needs to be a fastball. If he does this he’ll stop overthrowing as much and he’ll have fewer tipped balls.

If you read ‘Sunday Morning Quarterback’ by Phil Simms he tells the story of how Bill Walsh worked him out twice at Morehead State (Simms was gone by the time the 49ers drafted which led to the drafting of Joe Montana in the third round in 1979).

Simms was shocked, SHOCKED when Walsh encouraged him to “throw softer.” Every other coach wanted him to throw as hard as he could.

Not Walsh. Softer. That as the genius of Bill Walsh. Arm-strength was great. Accuracy and decision making was even greater.

Good point

I’d forgotten about that.

Here’s the YouTube clip for those interested in watching it (It’s well worth it).

Oh and Quality Control Coach

would be a dream job for me. This is the kind of stuff I love to do.

Amazing post, smileyman

If this is a weekly item, my NinersNation addiction isn’t going anywhere!

Jason Hill is turning the corner!

I'm planning on making it a weekly thing

This is the 3rd time I’ve done it (started it after the Houston game).

Smileyman

First, I apologize for my comments in last week’s thread. I didn’t realize it was a weekly thing you were doing, and I didn’t take the time to credit the hard work you put into these.

Second, good job dude, really impressive.

No hard feelings I hope.

i am sure there are no hard feelings.

easy for me to say, but I think you (Andrew) and smileyman are both very knowledgeable and I appreciate your contributions to this site.

nice post, smileyman

“The pass protection still needs help. Alex only had 2 or 3 seconds to throw the ball most times.”

I am glad you said this. That is what I saw, but I was beginning to doubt my judgment. Alex clearly has some learning to do, but i like his trajectory so far.

I am hopeful that the 49ers will be transformed by an improved offensive line and filling in a few defensive weaknesses.

In regards to the 11th drive....

the defender was definitely early, but that is how it seems to go for the Niners this season (close calls go against us)….Nice work with the play by play, Smith does seem to be better than his younger years, really only 1 turnover was completely his fault, they need to have stats like baseball has with things such as earned and unearned runs for turnovers lol

Great Job

i’m feeling that the offensive line is coming together more and more each week

Go 49ers

I really think so

I think they’re starting to get used to the scheme. The run protection is better (it helps that we have a passing threat now), but the pass protection still needs work.

by smileyman on Nov 10, 2009 6:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd like to think so, but i don't really feel sure of that at all.

I do believe the run is opened up a bit by all the passing, but I am not seeing much pass protection at all. I don’t watch and analyze as well as some of you guys, but my impression is that the tackles tend to need help, that skill players have been “staying in” more than usual, and that, partly because the tackles need help, we are having trouble picking up blitzes even with some skill players staying in.

It looks chaotic back there to me. You never know when someone will shoot through a gap unmolested like Chris Hope did last Sunday. On the play-action strip there was not enough time, etc. I impressed that Alex Smith is able to keep his composure as much as he has in that chaos.

the titans have a good d-line

that isn’t an excuse for their not so great performance last week, but it is something to consider.

Go 49ers

Nice work!

How does it feel to have to actually put in work now that our offense is moving the ball instead of 10 3 and outs?

Really good post smileyman

Keep up the good work…its getting better and better each week!
Look forward to reading the break down each week now

I like how people think things are getting better...

Even though we turned the ball over 4 times and almost another (instead it was only a drive killing 20 yard loss on 2nd and 2).

All in all, I think Smith’s mistakes were mostly of the timing/stare down variety. More familiarity with the system and his receivers should improve these two things. The team needs to be patient with him.

You have been DFiBrillated.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Nov 10, 2009 8:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

timing and staredown are classic young qb mistakes.

Hopefully this is coach-able and an area that can be improved with time. I agree regarding patience.

Very much appreciate this

Both your taking the time to go over the drives play by play and provide an overall analysis to which we can comment and question. It at least provides a a grounded context for debate.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

NFL Game Rewind

Are you able to watch different angles or camera views of the same play, or is it just as a televised game with whatever the camera’s point at?

So the comment about Isaac Bruce (mentally out of it and did not go to the ball well) is based on the plays where the ball was thrown to him, I just don’t recall that he was always in view that he was the intended receiver if the ball was incomplete.

Great job.

It seems that most passing plays (except screens) are where the WR’s do not have a chance to get yards after the catch. All are routes where teh WR cuts back to the QB, and then gets tackled. I’m sure we ran some plays where the WR runs a slant or long route where he can make the catch as he is running and bust one open past the Safety, but do we actually run those or Alex just didn’t get any open players on those?

by fortyniners on Nov 11, 2009 8:40 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I would be in heaven if I could watch different angles

But it’s just what’s shown on TV. The reason I said Bruce looks mentally out of it is because of that crossing play in the middle where he’s not paying attention to his surroundings and Josh Morgan gets pushed into him.

That’s a glaring lack of awareness and a season or two ago you wouldn’t have seen that.
