49ers 10 - Bears 6: Overflow Thread

49ers_logo_medium vs. Bears_icon_medium

Andrew Davidson will have a recap thread coming soon enough after the game.  In the meantime I think an overflow thread is in order to carry us through the end of the game and into the post-game until the recap is up.

GO NINERS!

by SportsChicken on Nov 12, 2009 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

At that point in the game it's not enough to burn time

You’ve got to put it away. Otherwise you end up with 80 yard drives in 2 min

by smileyman on Nov 12, 2009 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

That was a fantastic drive, whether or not they closed out. Forced Cutler to force the ball, and probably ultimately led to the win.

by Cruithear on Nov 12, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions

And yet they still couldn't... wait, what is it, let me think...

oh yeah… SCORE POINTS.

I don’t care how much time they burned off the clock. In case you missed it, Chicago drove down the field because they got the ball back with almost 3 minutes left in the game, and ended up having to stop Chicago at the 12 yard line to keep from losing.

The offense can’t put the game away. Same as the last 2 weeks, and they were lucky to get out of this one with a win. If Cutler didn’t suck so much ass, this would probably have been a 13-10 loss.

No, it really seems like you’re saying that the 49ers entire long drive wasn’t any good because they didn’t score any points, and then say that Chicago had a great drive that was capped by one stupid play.

Shouldn’t that Chicago drive not be a good drive because they didn’t score, by the same criteria which says that the 49ers not scoring on their drive made it a bad one?

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Nov 12, 2009 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

Would you care to copy and paste where I said Chicago had a great drive?

I didn’t. We won because Cutler sucks and is really good at throwing to the wrong team.

That said, since we couldn’t score on that fantastic, magical, wonderful clock chewing drive and managed to give the ball back to Chicago with 3 minutes left, the Bears were able to get themselves into position to win the game on their last drive, instead of needing a touchdown to tie it and force overtime.

by mikev on Nov 12, 2009 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

I said it seems like that’s what you were saying. If I was misinterpreting things, that’s my fault.

I actually never personally commented on the quality of that drive. I was happy with the drive itself but frustrated with the result. It was a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, it did a lot to help finish the Bears off, but on the other hand, it did leave them with an opportunity to turn things around.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Nov 12, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

That's part of our problem

by smileyman on Nov 12, 2009 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

Which is pretty much what I said.

It’s inexcusable to not score on that drive. Even a FG means Chicago needs a TD just to tie the game.

yards?

How many yards did you give up to a terrible offense tonight? If anything, they showed how vulnerable they are. If you give up that many yards to the bears, what will happen next time you play AZ?

by MikeSz on Nov 12, 2009 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

Our defense does seem to give up a lot of yards

A better pass rush would help. Than again they gave up 80 yards on the last drive playing a prevent after the 4th Down penalty. Dumb decision, but they got away with it.

both the O line and D line are suspect

by DrStankus on Nov 12, 2009 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

D Line is not a good pass rushing unit but they shut down the run. We know about the O Line, we call them the LOLine.

by bignerd on Nov 12, 2009 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

somewhat similar to the O line

they are OK enough to get the run going with Gore, but not good at pass blocking.

Isn’t run blocking the easier of the two? Simply cause you don’t have to block nearly as long.

by DrStankus on Nov 12, 2009 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

Nope the offensive linemen whiff equally on both run and pass blocking plays.

by bignerd on Nov 12, 2009 9:10 PM PST up reply actions

Boy, they are terrible.

by howtheyscored on Nov 12, 2009 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

Nope

Run blocking is harder. You have to have technique and strength to blow the D-line back. You also have to be smart enough to read the secondary and pick up on the LBs. Pass blocking you don’t have to worry about it so much. You’re defending rather than attacking, so theoretically it should be easier.

We're susceptible to the big play

How often do we see teams go to 3 and long only to bust a 15 yard or 20 or 30 yard play on us?

Yards given up and gained

Is probably the worst stat to measure a team’s success in football. I’d point to the 5 INTs as showing how good we were, or the multiple 3 and outs, and to the final score before I start calling them awful.

by smileyman on Nov 12, 2009 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yards

vs Points… which is more important?

by Cruithear on Nov 12, 2009 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

answer the question...

it is fine to dissagree, but answer the question…
… you can’t allow that many yards if you want to win games, against teams who at least have an average offense, let alone top ranked offenses!

by MikeSz on Nov 12, 2009 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

Those yards would have lost the us the game if not for the turnovers.

Last time we played AZ...

We allowed a lot of yards to Tim Hightower…we still won.

The 49ers also allowed a ton of yards to Peyton Manning, but held them to only 18 pts.
This isn’t fantasy football.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Haha someone who doesn’t realize that Willis needs to be included in " something going for them", has no credibility anywhere on this planet.

If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

Mark Roman, Michael Lewis, and Aubrayo Franklin.

One who hadn’t had a regular season INT in 2 years, a guy who’s just gotten back after 3 concussions in a month, and a nose tackle.

Spectacular, Jay Cutler.

I loved seeing Jay Cutler throw for 5 INTs.

And savor the fact that Chicago doesn’t have a first or second round pick next draft.

No offense but why is Willie Brown on Postgame Live? I’ve heard him make so many ridiculous statements and ask so many stupid questions this season. At least take his mic away and just prop him up there as a gimmick.

He doesn’t know football and he doesn’t know this team. He doesn’t know that Favre’s first name is Brett. As I type this, he’s referring to Nedney as “um…your kicker” during the Singletary interview.

by Chimneyfish on Nov 12, 2009 9:28 PM PST reply actions

He’s kind of an embarrassment to humankind.

I’m actually not watching. I just saw the words Willie Brown and wanted to drop the Grbac reference.

Actually it’s pretty entertaining. He just suggested that Alex Smith’s problem is a lack of arm strength.
