SINGLETARY WAS HIRED BECAUSE OF SHAUN HILL !!
SINGLETARY WAS HIRED BECAUSE OF SHAUN HILL !!!
Did everyone forget how horrible we were before Shaun Hill came in and changed things quickly ? Alex Smith and JT O' Sullivan were true laughing stocks at the quarterback position. Alex and JT were completely overwhelmed and fumbled and threw the ball wildly. I dont think I have ever seen such terrible performances from a NFL Quarterback. Then Mike Singletary steps in for Mike Nolan and starts Shaun Hill. Shaun Hill breaks the All-time completion record in his first starting game, and no one notices. And still have bad things to say about Shaun Hill. Shaun Hill wins 75 % of his games and still gets no respect. Then this year he is doing good also, but the play calling is run the ball on the first and second downs, then put tons of pressure on the quarterback to get at least 10 yards to get a first down, instead of realizing our running game is doomed because our Offensive line is terrible, and passing on the first down more often. Jimmy Raye and Mike Singletary also put Shaun Hill up on the center way too much when he had no time to react because of our weak Offensive Line. Dan Marino almost always played in the Shotgun formation because they had a weak Offensive Line and Dan Marino was incredibly accurate just like Shaun Hill. If you can hit your Reciever on the numbers and realize instinctively where the best spot to throw the ball is quickly, then you will get your recievers down field and score. This is why Shaun Hill was winning. And because we were winning, Mike Singletary was getting all the credit. I admit Mike Singletary is a great coach, but what the hell is he doing getting rid of ( Rossum ), ( Kory Sheets ), and the man who made him " ( SHAUN HILL ) ????

AGAIN WITH THIS STUPID PICTURE
you are not a true fan. you have no idea about niner football if all you keep referring these TRUE statements as a scapegoat. Mr. Scapegoat…..please enlighten us on your thoughts to why our season went from great to awful all within a few weeks (thus when Shaun Hill was pulled). I am soooooooo curious to your genious ideas!
Yeah!
It was all on the quarterback! It’s so obvious if you look at… ?
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
If I may summarize your argument:
We won, then we lost. Hence, it’s all on the quarterback.
Do I have it right?
Let’s look at the scoring of our losses, shall we?
@ Minnesota: 27-24. Defense allowed 20 points, including the game winning TD at the end of the game. Shaun HIll led two touchdown drives, special teams gave up a TD and scored a TD. In the end what matters is the defense allowed more points than the offense scored. I’d call that a team failure.
Atlanta: 45-10. Ouch. So the defense allowed all 45, Shaun Hill led one touchdown drive. Since Shaun Hill was the QB, do you want to go ahead and just say this was obviously Glenn Coffee’s fault, since he was the featured back that day? An interception thrown by Hill and two fumbles lost, I guess we just have to put this one squarely on the shoulders of Coffee. The defense, as you appear to indicate, is obviously not responsible, even partly, for any loss.
@ Houston: 24-21. Defense allows all 24 points. Shaun Hill led the 49ers to exactly 0 points in the first half, and the defense allowed 21 of the 24 points in that half as well. I’d think there must be some connection here, but since we’re going to blame this loss on Alex Smith anyway, I’ll dismiss such a notion out of hand. Sure, the 49ers outscored the Texans in the second half 21-3 on three offensive touchdown drives by Smith, so this is obviously his fault.
@ Indy, 18-14. Certainly not a great game from Smith, and the defense did what was needed to keep the Niners in the game. Two more turnovers by the Niners didn’t help, and a game winning drive by the Colts sure didn’t either. Obviously, Smith is responsible for that final drive.
Tennessee, 34-27. A VERY not good game from Smith. 4 turnovers, a TD scored off an interception… That’s bad. But again, the defense allowed 27 points as Chris Johnson rushed for 135 yards and 2 TDs. So I’d consider that a failure of the team, but let’s just go ahead and place all the blame squarely on Smith’s shoulders.
Hey, here’s a fun idea! Let’s also look at the Shaun Hill wins, and see what happened there!
@ Arizona: 20-16. Shaun Hill led two scoring drives, the defense allowed one touchdown. SHAUN HILL WINZ!!!
Seattle: 23-10. Frank Gore breaks off a 69 and an 80 yard touchdown. Nedney hits three field goals, Hill throws for 144 yards and no touchdowns, defense allows 10 total points. HILL WINZ AGAIN!!!
St. Louis: 35-0. Niners lead 7-0 at the half on a Special Teams TD. Special teams scores a TD, defense scores 2 TDs and shuts out St. Louis and forces three turnovers. Hill leads two touchdown drives. HILL WILLZ TEAM TO VICTERY!!!
This might not be a particularly deep look at any game, but I think there’s a few conclusions we can reach here. So to recap, I’d say the defense won some games for us (AZ, Seattle, St. Louis, Chicago), they contributed to a few losses (Minn, Atl, Hou, Tenn), an ineffective offense cost us one game (Indy) and almost lost us another (Chicago).
But your analysis says it’s all Smith’s fault. I agree with you. Smith is responsible for it all.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Forgot Most Special Teams
Has played a huge part in every game except @Arizona and Tennessee.
@Minnesota – Ray McDonalds FG block a return for TD swung the game in our favor. Percy Harvin’s kickoff return swung the game back in the Vikings favor.
Atlanta – special teams were burnt to a crisp and fumble was the final nail in the coffin.
@Houston – Battles fumble while trying catch a punt return was the difference in the game.
@Indy – Atrocious punt return game kept the offense on a long field the entire game. Offense was moving the ball most of the game and bad field position probably cost the 49ers at least 6 points if not more.
St. Louis – Fumble recovery in the end zone allowed the 49ers go into the half with the lead.
Chicago – Again punt return lost great field position, most notably in the 4th Qtr where the 49ers should have taken control near mid field, instead returner let the ball bounce it went back an extra 20 yards. 49ers marched the ball on the drive but ended up just outside field goal distance.
But the greater point is, Hill is responsible for willing Special Teams to winning plays, but Smith is responsible for any and every bad play.
Really, I suspect the reason for the record is less to do with who is the starting QB, and more to do with the Niners being a pretty average team.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
IAWTC
There have been a ton of different reasons for the Niners success and failure this season. Boiling it down to a single player/position/coach (Mark Roman, Shaun Hill vs. Alex Smith at QB, Jimmy Raye) brings down the level of discourse and will thus elicit my ridicule.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
I love the
“you are not a true fan” argument
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
it's pretty awesome isn't it
and by awesome of course I mean dumb
"Pat is still just scratching the surface." - Coach Singletary on LB Patrick Willis
YOU WANT DUMB....
hiring Jimmy Raye
starting Alex Smith
playing Mark Roman
releasing Rossum
…the list goes on.
The list does go on--and that means you and I agree about this fanpost!
see my comment (IAWTC) above.
What’s funny about your comment here (‘you want dumb’) is that I agree with you about 1 of those 4 things (Rossum) - and that’s not nothing. What I agree with (in your comment) more globally is the fact that you don’t (i.e. one shouldn’t) just boil it all down to 1 thing-which is what the OP tried to do. Calling a guy out on that doesn’t make me ‘not a true fan’. It makes me a fan of a richer understanding of the problems that the team faces.
To put it another way, I like the fact that you can make arguments for at least 4 scapegoats—that is already an improvement over what the OP did with this fanpost.

that's my point
The more scapegoats you have, the more impossible scapegoat logic (which blames one person) becomes.
As I see it, the point of a community like Ninersnation is that you have a bunch of people who all watch the games and follow the team closely, and who, by virtue of the fact that they all do that, can have a well- informed and nuanced perspective on the team. There may be disagreements (like yours and mine re: Raye and Smith), but there will often be agreements (like yours and mine re: Rossum)—and there will necessarily be topics that need debate (like Mark Roman’s continuing role on the team).
That’s what I’m for. Does that make me ‘not a true fan’?
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
ok everyone time for some questions:
1. what line of work are you in?
2. how much is it awesome/does it suck?
3. what’s your commute like?
4. how early do you have to get up?
5. how much of your work day is spent on NN (and/or other blogs)?

1. I work primarily as a copywriter, but I do some web-based editing as well.
2. It’s pretty cool. Sometimes it’s a drag, but I like that for an entry-level-bridge-to-grad-school gig, I was able to find something where I get to write almost creatively pretty much all day.
3. It’s about 45 minutes in the morning, going from San Rafael to Alameda, and up to two hours in the afternoon depending on how many morons decided it would be fun to drive like morons on 80 (hint: usually lots)
4. I get up between 6:15 and 6:35 every morning.
5. Since the site got unblocked magically a couple of months ago… lots. On the bright side, I spend less time online after work because I have so much less catching up to do!

ugh
Marin to Alameda – doesn’t sound like a fun commute – what kind of company is it that you work for? I don’t know anything about this line of work so fill me in – what exactly does a copywriter do?
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I work as a contractor for a major communications corporation that you might have heard of. The commute actually doesn’t bother me. I used to commute with my dad for about the same amount of time when I worked for a summer with him, and if I want to see anybody in my family I pretty much have to drive at least an hour. Really, as long as I’m not driving to Central California, the distance just feels short to me at this point.
In my company, we build websites for small business. Just basic marketing stuff. Pop out a template, throw on the contact info, dish out some snappy text to make them seem (if I’m doing my job right) like the kind of company you want to hire. So for most of the day, it’s my job to write that most basic of marketing text. Sometimes it can be really interesting and the text can be fun and worthwhile, but sometimes it’s just like, “how can I make another landscaper sound even remotely unique or particularly good….?”

ok let's just call a spade a spade
welcome to the “get to know howtheyscored hour.”
You say your family is at least an hour away – where do they live? And how did you end up in Marin, especially if you work in Alameda?
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I grew up in Vallejo. I have some family in San Rafael, where I’m living now. My brother and a few of my cousins live in Santa Cruz. My oldest sister lives in Sacramento. I have family in San Mateo. I have cousins living in SF (which can sometimes be an hour away). Some of the surrounding areas to those larger areas, too. Natomas, Vacaville, Oakland. I still have some family in Vallejo.
My family was renting the house in Vallejo for years because we couldn’t afford to buy but didn’t want to leave the area (four kids in school… didn’t want to uproot if possible). Once my younger brother went to college in Santa Cruz, there was no reason to keep up those expenses, so my dad moved back out with some family in San Rafael while he repairs his finances that have basically been broken for… probably 15 years now, and didn’t get any better when he was taking on much debt for all of our student loans.
So I’m living out there while with them all while I’m not able to get out on my own.

Oh yeah, and I work in Alameda because after six months of job hunting in a down economy, it was the first place I could find a job that was happy to take a guy with a bachelor’s degree in English and no experience to speak of. I really wanted to be a chooser about it, but I was way past the begging line at that point. It turned out to be a pretty okay job (minus the low pay and complete lack of benefits) that’s getting me what appears to be valuable experience.

Yes, but I have 2 kids
My wife leaves for work at 7:30 which means I’m the one who has to get them out the door for school at 8:45. If I’m really tired I’ll go back to sleep, but usually once I’m up I can’t.

Although I grew up in Santa Clara voting for the 49ers, I live in Utah now. There’s a law in Utah that says bars can’t serve alcohol after 1 am, and the night life’s not quite as big.

1. I’m in the Air Force (career field HVAC) I have been in now for over 20 years
2. For the most part it has always been good, a few times not so good. I worked for SOCOM for 4 years and deployed to some nasty places that Air Force personnel just aren’t meant to go to!
3. I live on base so it is like a 5 minute drive. That is nice.
4. Well If I was ever to show up on time it would be 6 am. Seeing I show up when I feel like it, it’s usually around 7, 7:30 am. It’s good to be a Senior NCO!
5. A lot. I am currently the Flight Superintendent for a section that has very little work. So it gets quite boring. Except for my constant argument with a Patriots fan!

so you build air conditioners for the Air Force?
for like, buildings?
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I don't build them
I work on/repair HVAC equipment. Not everyone in the Air Force works directly with planes. I am in the Civil Engineer Squadron. We basically have your typical construction type career fields to include Plumbers, Electricians, and Carpenters. In addition, heavy equipment operators and the Fire Department are a part of our squadron too. Basically, we maintain the base infrastructure, from the roads, to utilities, to the actual buildings themselves. They are all maintained by us. With one exception, usually base housing is maintained by a contractor.
11-5... My 49ers pre-season prediction!
ok I get it
that’s cool. Have you been able to travel anywhere that was really fun or interesting and not just nasty places?
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
Yes
I was stationed in Okinawa Japan for a few years, Other places i have been stationed are Dyess AFB in Abilene Texas, Andrews AFB just outside of Washington D.C, MacDill AFB in Tampa Florida and this wonderful place (<—-sarcasm) they decided to send me to called Minot North Dakota. In addition I have been to a few other places with the regular Air Force like Germany, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Korea, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, England, and Italy. Most of my nasty deployments came in the years I was assigned to Special Operations Command in Tampa. I did go to Colombia once during my special duty assignment which wasn’t too bad. Ah heck who am I kidding, that place was Awesome! Colombia had so many beautiful women it was unreal! It was like seeing thousands of Shakira’s walking around every day! Also I have done a lot of personal travel, mostly to the different Islands in the Caribbean.
11-5... My 49ers pre-season prediction!
ok my turn
1. Speech therapist for a school district
2. I don’t love it the way I want to. Special Ed law is very restrictive and forces you to do your job in certain ways that aren’t always ideal. I love working in a school and some of the actual therapy I do, I just hate all the paperwork and such. I need to be doing more continuing education and stuff like that.
3. 5-10 minute drive or slightly longer bike ride
4. 6:45 or 7, depending on if I shower at night or in the morning
5. Depends on the day – if I have students absent I’ll end up on here more than I should. Actually, it’s always more than I should. But some days I’m more productive than others.

I would prefer the bike ride
if it wasn’t uphill the entire way home. Plus I like to be able to stop at the gym and/or grocery store on the way home and it’s too hard to bring all the stuff on the bike. If I had a better bike, with a rack, then maybe I would ride it more.

I like mixing it up with stuff like this. And certainly worthwhile jacking this thread:
1. Law Student
2. It’ll be much more awesome when I graduate and take the bar. I’m in my last year and it’s kind of a pain right now. But overall, I’m glad I did it.
3. Not too bad. I live in downtown SF and take the bus to USF. Take the 49/47, transfer to the 5, and I’m there.
4. When I have my 9am corporations class, I’m up between 7 and 7:30. Other days 9ish.
5. A ridiculous amount of it.

2. It’s pretty neutral right now. Things have been slow for me, personally over the last month or so.
3. 5 minutes, 10 if I hit all the red lights. I live on one side of Campbell, and work on the other. It makes for an easy commute.
4. 830ish…I try to be in by 9, although that’s not a set time or anything.
5. I check NN maybe once or twice, for a few minutes. But I spend a lotta time over at Fear the Fin, and some time perusing through the other SBN blogs I’m a fan of.

Niners Nation census. Fun!!!
1. Until recently I was a manager in the retail financial services industry, but I made the knee jerk decision to quit my job and relocate, moving from Reno to Redwood City. Currently I am unemployed…err, enjoying a sabatical (yeah, that’s the ticket) and amazed at how difficult it is to even get an interview in this ridiculous job market. If anybody has a good lead on a job it would be greatly appreciated. In the mean time I have been trying to earn a little extra money by helping to connect fans with affordable 49ers jerseys. If anybody is in the market let me know, it might help me keep a roof over my head.
2. Being unemployed sucks way more than working for someone you hate.
3. Willing to commute :)!!
4. Whenever I want, the only thing good about not having a job. I am still usually up by 9.
5. When I was employed I would check in occasionally. Now, I spend less time here than you would think. Applying for employment is a full time job with plenty of overtime.

Haha, way to turn an annoying thread into something useful!
1. Unemployed. I’m a bit of an entrepreneur to be honest. Can’t look at a job/business without seeing a way it could be done/run better. While I am looking for a job I dabble in this and that, but mainly I write. A few short stories, an occasional attempt at a book or movie script, altered lyrics for popular songs just for kicks, and numerous poems. Actually a friend has been suggesting for some time that I publish a book of my better poems, so I have been spending a fair amount of time working towards that goal.

I think everyone is well aware of your stance
Is there a reason you keep posting the same thoughts over and over again? We get it! You love Kory Sheets, Shaun Hill, and Rossum. Please move on to something else.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Honestly
I think he’s just doing it for a laugh.
Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

You don't love CAPS MAN?
I love CAPS MAN. Welcome back CAPS MAN. I seriously love it. Nobody gets it? It’s hilarious. It’s comedy. I love this threadjack too, but CAPS MAN is a welcome diversion. Maybe it’s like rum though – interesting once in a while. but definitely more than once per week could get a little rich.
"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...
This Is funny!
I admit Mike Singletary is a great coach, but what the hell is he doing getting rid of ( Rossum ), ( Kory Sheets ), and the man who made him " ( SHAUN HILL ) ????
I am pretty sure Mike Ditka had more to do with making who Singletary is today.
11-5... My 49ers pre-season prediction!
Ditka.
You mean a normal-sized Ditka? What if it was a hurricane called “Shaun Hill?”

The 49ers do..
Outside of the OP’s pablum, Hill really was the catalyst for both HC’s retaining their jobs, be it Nolan after the Hostler debacle, and Sing having the interim tag ripped off.
Well, we're waiting....
Hmm
I don’t see it like that exactly.
Sing was hired because of his ability to influence ALL OF the players in producing on-field results. Not just specifically Shaun Hill as mentioned above. Manusky was already there…. And Raye certainly was not hired due to any specific player performance.
There may be a small truth to players on certain teams contributing to it, but I think the majority of the way GM’s make a decision on whether or not to hire a coach is their ability to …well… coach for lack of a better term. That was why the interim tag was removed from Singletary…and maybe a little to do with the name…and topping that, maybe a small portion due to his undersized wooden cross that he wears proudly across his chest.
Other than that, what I said is not off base.
Hill did save Nolan's job..
And even that is in question, since by rumor was that the Yorks wanted Nolan fired before the season started last year. I don’t think the Yorks have a clue on hiring HC’s. If the 49ers had lost to the Rams and BUF (both close games where they played like crap) last year, then who knows if Sing would be HC now. The only real difference was Hill kept them in those games, even though he almost lost them. Think about it. They gave Hill an extension. Who knows if he should be on the roster next season.
IMO, an more experienced HC would get more out of this team than Sing has of yet. The team quit on Nolan before last season started. Nolan was a lame duck when he got demoted. The only real difference to me was Nolan was out, Manusky didn’t have him meddling with his defense, and Martz still stretching the field, only to have Hill not make stupid throws. The O-line still was a sieve, and the 49ers had an easy sched down the stretch. Heck, Hill was almost benched against the Rams.
An offensive HC would have had this team at 6-3 right now. Like DEN with McDaniels. The offense is not that hard to fix. It’s harder when the HC has no clue of it.
Well, we're waiting....
Didn't read the fanpost but I am only posting to say:
Please format your ramblings into bullet points or paragraphs, no I still won’t read it but at least it’ll look like you went to school for more than 5 years.
Win the inning.
I didn't read this
Singletary was hired because he fired the starting QB who wasn’t getting the job done. That guys name was JT O’Sullivan or something. So, Singletary again this year fired the starting QB who wasn’t getting the job done. I guess he deserves a raise? That’s what the post says right?
If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.
Mrs. Sheets
I understand that you are upset that your son is not on the team anymore, but there really wasn’t a spot for him to play here in the Bay. Now that Ronnie Brown is out for the season there is a chance Kory will get to see some action with the Dolphins and make a name for himself. So you see Mrs. Sheets the Niners did your son a favor, so please leave us alone. Thank you.

Nobody Challenges KSWOF's Title Argument
Whenever one goes against the dominant sports blog peer group mentality – a mob mentality which generally parrots the TV pundits – one is told to shut up, that he’s repetitious and out of touch. Where are the logical rebuttals to KSWOF, where are any comments here that deal with any of his points? For example, check out the classic anti-intellectual “Love It Or Leave It” responses to minority thought – rational thought of KSWOF – from umext and twolfe2 above. Hill remains 3&1, Smith 1-4. Without Hill, no playoffs. With Hill a slight chance.
wins
So nobody gets credit for the loss to Houston? When Hill was benched, the 49ers were down 21-0. Alex Smith brought the team back before a 24-21 loss. I’d say Hill gets the loss on that one.
As far as wins are concerned, football is the ultimate team sport:
The Rams game was won because of the defense. Hill got two touchdowns in the second half, but it was like pulling teeth trying to get the offense going.
Shaun Hill did get that game winning drive against Arizona, but I also think the defense is what contained the Cardinals and made this a winnable game.
The Seahawks win saw Hill perform ok, but not exactly like a guy winning the game for the team. He was 19/26 for 144 yards. Not exactly awful, but with his penchant for checking down, it wasn’t like he was making big plays to move the offense (his longest pass was 17 yards).
Shaun Hill was certainly solid at times, but it’s rather difficult to compare the 3-1 vs. 1-4 record when you’re just pointing to the quarterbacks. Context!

We don’t really have to deal with his points because his posts are ridiculous and his points are dumb.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
