Who is the Genius who put Clements on Special Teams?
I know I'm not a GM, or head coach, but Nate Clements should never in a million years be returning punts. For one we pay him top dollar to cover recievers. 2nd he's not thhat good at it. 3rd, it is waaaaaay to risky. I would have went with any of these players first, Steve Spurlock, Arnaz Battle, Michael Robinson, Jason Hill, Delanie Walker, anybody exept the $80,000,000 man. Somebody lost me upstairs. I just don't know who's the bafoon. I csn't believe our staff could be this careless. Now our number one cornerback will miss the regular season, at least 6-8 weeks. C'mon maaaan!!!!! Allen Rossum Karma Strikes Back!!!!!!!!!!!!...Peace.....Stelf Bombz

I was confused too
I don’t know if Clements broke his scapula returning punts, but it certainly didn’t help. We need our own Johnny Knox/Percy Harvin/Darren Sproles/Cribbs/someone who can return punts and kickoffs.
I don’t want to get into draft talk, but we need more speed at WR,CB, RB and S. We need speed there so we don’t get beat on defense, so we can beat other defenses, and actually get good field position on punt returns
Go 49ers

I can almost guarantee the team tries to draft one after this early season disaster.

what about if we
try to trade for Ted Ginn in the offseason. he’s always been a decent return man and is really coming into his own. Plus i think the phins would want to dump his salary since he isnt quite panning out as a reciever, and we could restructure him to some sort of 4 year deal based on incentives.
just my two cents tho

He'll demand a ton of money
He probably thinks he’s good at playing WR.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Finally, a complaint thread I can get behind
Even if its a day late to the party.

Actually he's pretty good at it
And had done it on occasion the past two seasons. It’s not ideal but in light of our other options, his returning punts was okay by me.

I agree
I thought he looked good returning the punts. And I gaurantee he wouldn’t have fielded that one punt on the 5 like Brandon Jones did. I think they had him doing it because of how high they are on Brown and Spencer. I know they said it was only a 1 game demotion because of match-ups, but I get the feeling he was slowly moving down the depth chart anyways.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.

I thought he looked slow
also, the niners pass defense seemed to do OK without him.
FIRE BRIAN SABEAN... UNLESS HE KEEPS DRAFTING WELL. .. AND SIGNS UNDERRATED PLAYERS LIKE AFFELDT OR PHELPS. .. OR ALRIGHT WHO'S PLAYING WITH THE ALIEN MIND-SWITCHING RAY?

He averaged 9.5 yards for his 4 punt returns
That’s better than the 7 yard average Rossum had on the season and the 3 yard average Jones had for the next 2 punts.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.

So I just checked where a 9.5 avg would rank among punt returners
While he obviously doesn’t have enough returns to qualify for the standings, a 9.5 average would be good enough for 10th best. So while he wasn’t great, he was above average.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.

possibly
he’s smart but slow. He just reminded me of watching Issac Bruce (2009 version) after the catch.
He had: 1 8 yd return on a 60 yd (!) punt, 2 12 yard returns (one that he fumbled out of bounds) a -1 return, and a fair catch. Not really sure how that grades out to 9.5 yards… looks like 7.75 to me.

One problem
The Colts kicker was booming the ball 65+ yards. Typically that means the punter is out kicking the coverage and should get an excellent return.

I agree.
I agree that he actually has pretty good vision for someone who’s on defense most of the time. However, for the amount of money invested in him, risking his body on punt returns is kind of foolish.
Considering his demotion, I didn’t have a whole lot of issues with him returning kicks. If you can take away the money aspect, all would be fine. You just shouldn’t put that kind of money in that position.

If he’s not earning his paycheck as a CB, make him earn it by helping out in other aspects of the game. I see no problem with this.
Course, now he’s injured, so what do I know?
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Don't worry ...
He won’t be returning punts for the next 6-8 weeks. I guarantee it.

The same Genius who had Arnaz Battle returning punts before
And the same genius who figured Allen Rossum wasn’t versatile enough to be on the team.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

The Return Game has been pathetic
I still don’t understand the Rossum cut. He was doing well!
Since that, we’ve seen some very sluggish returners, as well as boneheads (seriously B. Jones, catching it at the 5? Not fair catching when 5 defenders are around you?)
I hope they draft a good return man, but AFTER fixing the O-Line!! (Are 2 first rounders too much for the OLine? I want a Tackle, but would a 1st round guard be too high?)

I wonder...
… if it was coincidence that Rossum was hurt the week after he was cut? The 49ers supposedly saw injury in him, and maybe he didn’t agree?
by sfgfan on Nov 3, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Rossum was mediocre at best
He’s averaging 7 yards per punt return on the season. That’s only good enough for 20th. Meanwhile Clements averaged 9.5 yards on his 4 punt returns in Indy. It’s just unfortunate that he got hurt.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.

check the numbers on NFL.com
he averaged less than 9.5

To answer the original question
The same genuises who coached an outstanding ST coverage unit on Sunday. Second straight week the coverage units were awesome. And Andy Lee should be given his Pro Bowl spot after his game in Indy.
Our biggest ST mistake was Jones catching the ball at the 5. Had Clements not been hurt, that doesn’t happen. Of course the coaches could’ve put Battle back there but I think we’d all have a fit had that happened. The one mistake by Jones and the unfortunate injury to Nate doesn’t negate the fact that our ST looked great and hopefully have returned to the level of play from last season.

Reminder:
Under Bill Walsh, John Taylor returned punts All-The-Time
by CorneliusJ on Nov 3, 2009 4:38 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
He played second fiddle behind the greatest WR in football. He wasn’t a huge contract free agent.
by Hoopers Judge on Nov 3, 2009 6:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
But
I find it hard to believe that he was not as valuable to the niners then as Clements is now. Playing value not $$$$
Taylor’s talent helped make Rice the best. It was not possible for the D to take him lightly.
by CorneliusJ on Nov 3, 2009 7:05 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think maybe Taylor was a kick returner who happened to turn into WR.

Darrell Green returned them
As did Deion Sanders in Atlanta and Dallas. If they really are the best on your team, they should, at least in key situations or games. Look at Harvin returning KOs in Minnesota. Vikings would have one or two more losses without him and he may be their second most important WR after Rice.

horrible Idea
Clements when he was younger had some very good returns, but he was a lot more expendable then. From the moment I saw him on the field as a returner I was worried this would happen.

How bout that Cribbs kid?
Before the trade deadline we should have made a move to aquire a return man. Especially after dumping Rossum. Since that period we too huge hits on special teams. The Delanie Walker fumble against the Falcons, Arnaz Battle fumbled. Mickael Robinson looks solid at KR, but we need some speed on the PR. Special teams returner is a key element to field position as we all know. Why haven’t we addressed that need?
by STELF BOMBZ on Nov 3, 2009 10:12 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
We called and the Browns said he wasn’t available for trade.

BUT THE MEDIA SAYS HE WAS AAVAILABLE! OMG NO ONE WANTS TO TRADE WITH MCBOOFOO!

Michael Robinson
is by far our most reliable kickoff return man but putting him there creates one big problem. He is probably the best blocking upback in the NFL on special teams. His blocks were instrumental in springing Rossum last season. Now, though, he is returning the kickoffs and the upback was Coffee, who couldn’t block his grandmother if she was sitting in a wheelchair. He misses the block and Robinson gets nailed at least 10 yards before he should.
Come on Everest, put Norris or Morgan or someone who can block at the upback position. One thing Robinson has proven — how valuable a special teams player can be to a team. He needs to become schizo so that his other self can block for him when he’s returning kickoffs.
