Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

PFT reports the Niners are planning on franchising Franklin. I think this is an outstanding move. Gives us a chance to evaluate him for another year before offering a long term contract, and if someone does decide to pick him up we get 2 first rounders for it.

I don't see...

… anything wrong with franchising him, either. Even if the 49ers are looking for an NT of the future, those kind of guys don’t just develop overnight. Having Franklin around for at least a year while another player is being groomed in his place can’t hurt.

agree

And it’s not like there are cap issues right now.

Also, Maiocco and others have been talking about this, so definitely seems more and more likely.

hey fooch

Are we gonna see a post, or is there something recent that I missed regarding the Niners cap situation and potential FA targets for next season (if I missed something, I apologize, as Ive been swamped at work/school)? I know some people dont like talking about this stuff midseason, but itd be cool to start watching and evaluating some of those names, especially now with the addition of Thursday night games and the full slate of Thanksgiving Day games.

free agents

We’ve been doing mainly “Official NN FantPosts” to keep the discussion in one area. As long as the 49ers remain in the playoff hunt I’d prefer to focus on that on the front page. But we’ll have plenty coming along.

I like the move if true

No one will give up 2 first rounders for him (although wouldn’t that be ridiculously awesome if they did?) but he’s been really good this year and I think the DT tag is only like $6.5 million. That’s not too bad for a one year commitment, and as you said it allows the Niners to develop a younger player at NT.
