We're back with just a monster game for the 49ers. A win puts them right in the thick of the wildcard race and of course keeps them in shouting distance of the Cardinals in the West. The 49ers face a tall task in a Packers team that has quite a few playmakers on defense, and of course a solid arm in Aaron Rodgers. This battle of the top two defenses in the NFL will go a long way for one team's playoff chances.
GO NINERS!

Dietrich-Smith is Questionable
If he does not play that will be a big advantage. A big advantage.
I think Dashon is a pretty big factor. If he can prevent GB from getting over the top, and pursue on screens , we will be good on D.
Well
it’s cliche, bu the Niners have to win in the trenches to win this game. Green Bay’s O-Line is in terrible shape, and the 49ers have to take advantage of that. This game seems more “winnable” as kick-off inches closer and closer.

I’m still riding high from Cal’s win yesterday. Here’s to the 49ers not disappointing me.

I’m concerned I’ve blown my karma for the weekend. Cal won, my UNLV Runnin Rebels won, Andre Ward pulled off the huge upset.

(UPDATED 9:05 a.m.): Battle is on the practice field returning punts. Reggie Smith is also catching some punts, too. The 49ers have struggled with punt returns since the release of Allen Rossum was released when the 49ers had to create a roster spot for Michael Crabtree. Rossum was released because he couldn’t stay healthy, he had a couple bobbles in the first couple games, and his only value to the team was in the return game.
How many muffs has he lost?

What's that saying about road wins?
Defense and special teams. Sack Rodgers, stuff the run (as always), force a few turnovers and play perfect red zone defense. As for our ST, no turnovers, continued great coverage, make all kicks and please, for once, a 10+ yard return on a few punts.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

WOW. Josh Freeman just threw a touchdown against the Saints after a very impressive scramble.
fullback dive
A lot of teams run that play when you just need an inch. And Norris has converted that play before.
by David Fucillo on Nov 22, 2009 10:22 AM PST up reply actions
Norris rarely gets the ball
Clues the defense in. Gore would have gotten the inches needed and more!
Meh.
I would have called it to Norris as well. If Chilo didn’t get blown up it would have been successful. To call the guy that hit Norris anything more than “kind of maybe possibly blocked a little bit” is a stretch.

once again
it’s the execution. It’s inches to go. A FB dive is a reasonable call
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
right but
every team in the league calls either a sneak or a dive up the middle in that situation 90% of the time. Most teams can get an inch of push even when the defense is expecting it
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
reasonable
When you need one inch, it’s a smart call to go with the upback. You give it to Gore he has that extra yard or two to make up, which is why most teams go to the fullback. And Gore has had big runs, but he’s had just as many stuffs in the middle for a loss.

If the Niners can't get pressure on Rodgers
Then we really stink.
"It ain't over till it's over." - Yogi Berra
Just hopping into the thread after that horrifyingly stupid series of events.
I was being cautiously sarcastic when I said before that third down play, “at least we won’t hand it to Moran Norris again.”
Jimmy Raye is so stupid. It’s like he has a “third and one” play, a “second and five play” and a “fourth and inches on the road in the first quarter while down by three” playcall. I honest to god think that he just has a computer simulation that calls one of thirty total plays based on the league’s mean call in such a situation.
Zero creativity.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Where is that awful O Line
we keep hearing about? We sacked Peyton Manning 3 times, for christ’s sake!
We're not going to win this game
If the 49ers defense doesn’t get pressure on Rodgers! He’s going to pick the defense apart! Wasn’t the offensive line supposed to be a weakness for the Packers?
damnit shauntee

Why can't the 49ers defense do that to the Packers
Why are we such a pathetic team up front? Why can’t we ever fucken get to a quarterback! Because Manusky is a fucken pussy! He needs to be fired! I’m tired of the little girl defense the 49ers put out!
Come on
The Packers offensive line has been a joke all year and we get absolutely no pressure on Rodgers. It’s not that hard to understand how to defeat a passing team, make the quarterback make decisions quickly, don’t give them all day to throw they will pick the defense apart! But, Manusky doesn’t understand this concept. The bend but don’t break attitude is a failure!

I think it was probably a decent enough call. Brown was probably a little too physical.

Could are Corners be any softer?
Oh look a receiver coming at me let’s bite on one move and leave him wide open! My god
YES!
We like intentional grounding….Although I thought he was outside the tackle box…I’ll happily be wrong.
never mind
Forgot about needing it to get to the line of scrimmage.

well, quite. even better

I want a run to gore, followed by a screen to gore, then a slant to Crabs
And BAM! first down.
3 yard run, 3 yard screen play, 4 yard slant?
You’ve got high expectations, I see.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Well, hello everyone.
I am unfortunately in New Jersey for a family illness and am not watching the game. My mother doesn’t have internet so I am in the town library. From the less than complete descriptions of the action and the angst and the bilious comments being posted I can only guess that things aren’t going well. The team sounds flat, the game sounds fixed, and there’s a lot of Alex Smith hate although the NFL site has him as only having attempted two passes. Kind of hard to believe.
Anyway, my heart is with everyone but I’m probably going back to watch the Giants. At least Mom has cable.
Go Niners!

I hope things are alright, sorry to hear about the illness.

nothing?
Are you saying he’ll never amount to anything? Or that he’s nothing in the sense that the 49ers don’t know enough about him yet?

Or if the pocket lasts for a second then collapses
fantasy question
I’m starting Carson Palmer @ OAK over Phillip Rivers @ DEN. good idea?

we have two first round picks
and if we don’t use them both on offensive linemen I will destroy my television
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
Slow down a bit..
For the first time in years the o-line is one of the weaker positions in this draft. This looks to be one of the most talented drafts in YEARS but o-line isn’t where it’s strong. I want one o-lineman and one defensive player, with a good guard in the second or third round.

They are not playing like NFL linemen, they are playing like scared little high school girls!
Shall he be fired too?
They just need to clean house dowmn they? Just fire everybody, right??
can agree with you on that
It’s ridiculous how poorly they’re performing.

Love peyton in commericals
Hate him on the field
No Singletary's offensive line
is garbage! It’s time to stop using oh this guy is hurt another guy is hurt! They need to go out there and play instead of acting like they don’t belong out on the field to begin with!
This is embarrassing
So far, can we really blame the O-line? It seems like Smith isn’t being decisive and/or or receivers are not getting open. Regardless, its time to start switching up the playcalling and ADAPT TO THE DAMN GAME
The o line may not be up to par....
but I agree with what you’re saying. Smith seems very indecisive.. I get the feeling he’s 2nd guessing himself..
by ThermoElectro on Nov 22, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions
Smith is making bad decisions.
But he panics, that’s Smith. If the o-line was better, he’d panic less.

Yeah we can blame of the offensive line
Has Smith had any time to throw? Nope. Have they played well? No!
Are you watching the game?
Smith is moving from the pocket and that’s when he’s running into trouble. Obviously, our O line is bad, but Smith needs to know that and work with what he has
yeah
that’d be better /rolleyes

I can't believe that Alex Smith is dropping his head and giving up on the pass so early each time
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Its the pressure from the pocket constantly collapsing
But yea i agree that hes bringing his head down too early
Am I the only one who wants to see what Diyral Briggs can do?
Not going to say he’s the best thing ever, ya know, but I’m interested.

Playing Diyral Briggs = getting Thomas Clayton carries.
The only reason it sounds appealing is because you haven’t seen him suck yet. Putting him on the field would change that.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Again, I didn't say he was the best thing ever.
But we aren’t getting pressure on the weakest o-line in the league. It’d be worth putting in a guy the Packers didn’t study one bit.

The 49ers should have gotten that stop on 3rd and 5
But they didn’t very next play a 64 yard touchdown! This is why the 49ers do not have a good defense.
Maybe this is why Sing is conservative
And perhaps Raye should be running Gore more.
