Packers 23 - 49ers 10: Fourth quarter thread
Florida Danny made a good point about how the offense seems open up when the team is behind big, then shrivel up when things get close. It's really quite frustrating. Definitely something we'll be discussing at some point this week. In the meantime, the 49ers have the ball down 13 points. Maybe they can avoid embarrassing themselves.
GO NINERS!

I'll say it over and over Crabtree was not the pick we NEEDED, at least until he scores with 100yds receiving.
but it's not Alex's fault
no, it’s not his fault. we have a bad o-line. so that was the line’s fault…right?
I’m sick of Alex
This type of thinking is the problem
Don’t take chances until we’re in a 3 score hole then jump all over dude when he throws a pick.
by sactownbull on Nov 22, 2009 12:38 PM PST up reply actions
i've supported him
because he’s the qb. but i think he holds the ball too long and makes bad decisions.
When Alex gets sacked he averages 2.5 seconds with the ball. How is that holding the ball too long? Thats not even long enough to get to the 3rd read.
There was an article on ESPN about it. Rogers gets sacked more but holds the ball .5 seconds longer than Alex.

That was on VD
Alex put it in a place where he could catch it
doesn't matter whether its AS fault or not
always has at least 1 INT a game that he plays. It’s like day and night its gonna happen

Nate Davis=Bench Warmer
He’s not the qb of the future. Shaun Hill wasn’t he the one starting when the 49ers lost 45-10 to the Falcons? Wasn’t the one starting when the 49ers were down 21-0 against the Texans?
Nate Davis
Just a heads-up, but I’m going to put together a Nate Davis-related post probably tomorrow. So we’ll have plenty of opportunity for Nate discussion.

Nate thread
I have a few things to say, but it’s more that I’d like to get some explanations from both sides on a couple issues.
by David Fucillo (Fooch) on Nov 22, 2009 12:55 PM PST up reply actions
we have to stop
giving the “standard issue” response about him. He could be given some snaps in practice if they were to decide to get him more involved. It’s possible to get the kid ready. Tell me what Alex is doing now that Nate couldn’t do as well? Hold the ball and get sacked or throw an INT?
Any reasonably minded Niners fan knows thats not an option
But still a good idea to make a thread of it
I'm sorry, I'm all for Smith to stay for the current time being
But to say that Nate Davis isn’t an option under any circumstances in the future is ridiculous. He has shown all the right tools, plenty of amazing QBs come from the later rounds/UDFA.
You can never resist the game... nor could I... we're the same, so don't even try.
Im not saying he wont be a good QB or even the Niners starting QB of the future
I just dont consider it an option THIS season.
Who cares that Alex isn’t a quitter? He’s inconsistent. He throws interceptions and makes bad throws and people say he sucks. Then he throws a TD and people go on about how great he is.

I didn’t have an issue with play calling the 1st half. Alex didn’t have a good half, the defense had a horrible 1st half.
you didn't?
About halfway through it I was screaming at the TV for some shotgun, because the rush was getting there WAY too fast.
Alex didn’t have the best half, and the D was terrible (good God we need a safety bad), but the play calling definitely didn’t help.

Thats 25% of the pass plays called in the 1st half.
I think one of those plays was a sack.
it's 2 plays
not a significant sample no matter how you slice it. And again, I’m advocating this as an offensive philosophy. Running it twice on third and long is not even close to the same thing.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends
--Daisy Owl
They ran it third in long because they gave up negative plays passing 1st and 2nd down. If it fails on 1st and 2nd what convinces you it will work on 3rd down and long?
Because it's not about the formation
it’s about the philosophy. Again, I’m not advocating this as a “wildcat” couple of times per drive maybe kind of thing. I’m saying make this your base formation and run it on 2/3+ of the snaps. You can’t say “oh well they lined up in the shotgun on 3rd and 14 so that’s the same thing.”
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends
--Daisy Owl
They have tried it at times. The only time it appears to work is when they use it to attacked the middle of the field with the deep ball. The previous three games the 49ers have just been throwing out patterns from that formation.
I’d argue the problem isn’t the formation but where the 49ers are throwing the ball against the defense. Out patterns convert a 3rd down, they hardly ever produce points.
that's not the case though
seriously go back and look at it, when they go out of that formation as a philosophy they’re successful WAY more often than when they don’t. It’s not just about the middle of the field, though that is part of it.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends

Hell
look at last week where they went to it, then ran like 6 times in a row out of it, were moving the ball well down the field, then abandoned it for no reason whatsoever, and got stopped.

It was the correct challenge
3rd and solid 1 yard is much different than 3rd and inches. The Refs have no excuse on that one.
The replay official has no excuse either
The NFL should suspend the replay official or fire him one of the two. You can’t be making that call with such an impact on the game right there. Even if the Packers got the first down on the next play the 49ers still had their timeout and the two minute warning and could have gotten the ball back.
Is the booth replay official an employee of the NFL?

It's Green Bay
I said it earlier in the week, if the game was the close the officials would royally fuck us over to make a difference in the end. They have been doing this in Green Bay my entire life.
We didn’t lose the game by the officials but they certainly shut the door on the 49ers a little too soon.
Singletary was complaining about the holding, it wasn’t that bad by the Packers but they got away with a few. They could have made up for it on the last challenge but it appeared the officials decided to completely blow Singletary off.
how did he cost them a chance?
that challenge was correct…i can do the math for you if you like

Why would you risk it though?
The outcoming wouldn’t have been that much better had the challenge went the niners way.

Wrong
3rd and 1 is WAYWAYWAY better than 3rd and an inch.

LOL steelers
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
Overall....The terribly slow start both on offense and defense in the first half cost us the game
But i liked the way Alex fought back. I like Crabtree showing he can make plays, and VD catching TD’s.
Not nearly enough Gore today though.

I'll be voting no on the Singletary approval rating post.
And I am NOT over reacting.
You can never resist the game... nor could I... we're the same, so don't even try.
Yes you are
"Optimist Prime"
I'll say it over and over Crabtree was not the pick we NEEDED, at least until he scores with 100yds receiving.
Come on now ...
… This was always a L in anyone’s predictions. 9-7 still beckons, and the Cards will fare no better than that. Play-offs not impossible. Believe.
"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...
Why can't the 49ers offense do that for all four quarters?
Why does that kind of offense come out when we’re behind?
because raye is stupid. plain and simple.
by whitemike1644 on Nov 22, 2009 1:20 PM PST up reply actions
Even the plays Raye scores on are stupid
All Go routes? Are you serious? Thats some shit you call on Madden when you don’t care anymore. Those are teh only times we moved the ball and it was seriously the same play call being called over and over again. Jimmy Raye is an old fool.

So Ray eis stupid because our WR's can't get open
He’s stupid because the OL sucks?
He’s stupid for not running the ball early, I agree there, but blaming coacheson poor QB decision making and a lack of support from the defense for once is OC
"Optimist Prime"
I'll say it over and over Crabtree was not the pick we NEEDED, at least until he scores with 100yds receiving.
These are all true
Morgan has regressed as a WR, his patterns are horrible.
Again, the offense got into the trouble the 1st half by not running enough early.
The defense was truly pathetic.
because Raye
doesn’t seem to notice that whenever we spread it out we move the ball.

Not true
They have spread it out. 1st time since Houston they tried to throw the ball vertical down the middle.
I thought the biggest issue in the 1st half was the repetitive passing on offense- the best way to deter the pass rush is to gash them with the running game.
Lethargy
It has me
not when they're sending 5-6 guys at the LOS every snap.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

Once they were down 3-0, Raye ran 9 passes and 2 runs the rest of the first half.
Three of those pass plays resulted in sacks. Not a coincidence. That disparity allows the D-Line to pass rush without fear of the running game.
Lethargy
It has me
what?
they were down 3-0 before the O took a snap. you mean 6-3?
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends

also
it’s not a coincidence, but not for the reason you think. It’s not a coincidence because our OL was getting destroyed the whole half, against the run and the pass.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends
--Daisy Owl
Our best plays in that half came with the running game.
Those two run plays in that period of time went for 4 yards and 6 yards. That’s not getting destroyed. They were overmatched in the passing game but if you string together runs like those two, you control the ball.
Instead they went three-and-out on sacks and incomplete passes.
Lethargy
It has me
That's Gore being Gore.
the LOL was still getting destroyed.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

If Gore being Gore works, even with the LOL getting destroyed, then do it!
More often, at least.
Lethargy
It has me
I agree
they should have tried more, but there were only 11 plays run after going down 6-3. If 3 of those passes are runs, you’re talking about a 5-6 ratio. Plus, unsuccessful plays early put them in passing situations later.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

--Daisy Owl
If three of the passes are runs, they are likely more successful at holding on to the ball and they get more than 11 plays after that point in the half.
Lethargy
It has me
not necessarily
but again, the samples we’re talking about here are so small, you can’t say anything about the big picture from them.

they spread it out
and it works, then Raye, in the middle of a drive, for no reason at all, completely abandons it.

They called plenty of pass plays the 1st half. Coverage was good the offensive line was breaking down. Was the play calling perfect, no. I have gripes too but it wasn’t the sole reason the team lost.
I’m not talking about pass/run ratio, I’m talking about spread out of the shotgun that they ran the whole 2nd half.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends
--Daisy Owl
They have tried to run the spread in every game since Houston and the offensive line has had huge problems blocking the pass rush. It’s just not that simple, you are discounting all the times it’s failed.
Well I never said it would be successful every time, but it’s CLEARLY been more successful than any other formation we’ve run.

Also because they lost 2 key defenders in the 2nd half.
Kampman goes down and then Al Harris. That can’t be complete coincidence.
If they had their heads out of their asses the first half;
This could have been a W.
they better figure out
how to do what they did in the 4th quarter, for 3 more quarters…or Sing and Raye will likely be gone. Maybe just Raye…but could be a housecleaning.
Defense didn’t play that good either they sucked ass as well

Honestly not sure how to take this game
Mistakes made on all ends including coaching. The defense didn’t step up, there were bad plays, the coaching staff made some bad choices and the offense had way too many penalties. Of course I’m looking at it with 20/20 hindsight and only watching the game really here and thru ESPN This game is not on the offense, not on the defense, not on the coaching staff, it’s on every player.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM PST reply actions
The FG non-attempt was a problem and the INT gave Grant a TD
Just trying to make logical sense of this all. With the FG we would have 3 more points and without that TD off the INT they would have had 7 less.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Nov 22, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions
I’m never for going for when a FG is available, not unless its late the game and TD is needed. Teams always seem to be chasing those lost points at the end.
I'm not
teams don’t go for it nearly as often as they should on 4th down. Especially 4th and short.

I know how hard headed you are about your stats. Again, you stare at the general stat and ignore the more situational ones.
well actually
in this particular situation, down big late, it’s even better to go for it. Only in hindsight after the INT does the FG look good.

more like
85% chance of 3 points is about equal to 35% chance of 7 points, but you need 14 points to take the lead, and there’s not a lot of time left in the game.

Manusky is getting a huge no vote
I’m not sure he ever watched taped the Packers WR. Can’t have our defense just back off a let them slip into zones. You have to dare the Packers into the making the big play and take away all the little things. AKA opposite of the Colts.
The run defense was the worst I’ve seen all year. Easily across the board that was a pitiful game by the front seven.
Totally agree...
…re Manusky. I was also frustrated that we couldn’t seem to figure out they were throwing on third and short every time during the first half.
How does a team that has given up the most sacks
Only allow 1? That’s also on Manusky and the defense for not getting any pressure on Rodgers.
I hope the team doesn't have any more;
Extra rest weeks. They forget how to play football in 10 days
Ugh..words cannot express..
…how much I hate this team right now.
There are two people on the coaching staff and playing staff who would have fit into one of the DeBartolo-era teams and one of them is the fucking punter.
11th and 12th picks as of now
San Francisco 4-6
Carolina 4-6
Tennessee 3-6
Washington 3-7
Kansas City 3-7
Seattle 3-7
Buffalo 3-7
Oakland 2-7
St. Louis 1-8
Detroit 2-8
Cleveland 1-9
Tampa Bay 1-9
I think Buffalo, Seattle and Washington can all turn it around
and we and Carolina can tank the rest of the way. 2 top 10 picks. Trade each down for a 1 and a high 2 then trade both 2’s for another 1 and a lower 2

Team is just inconsistent
Sing is a new coach. We just need to be consistent for once and we may be good. A coaching change at this point would just make that even worse.
Im actually pretty surprised about the Steelers losing in Kansas City… It’s like polomalu is there D
seems that way – they were losing early in the year w/ polomalu as well.
