Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Notes from the Game and Some Requests for the Future.

Raye sucks. Straight up. 'Nuff said. His screens fail (including bubble), his predictable FB handoffs on 3rd and inches fail, his passing plays to WRs (not TEs) fail, and his plays, in general, not run from the shotgun fail miserably. He will never be a playoff game-calling OC, so why keep him?

Alex Smith sucks. The reason I say this is because he wasn't set up (like Rodgers) to succeed and now it's too late. IT'S TOO LATE! We need Nate Davis out there for the rest of the season. He shows more pocket presence and poise.

I think the Forty Niners have found their kick returner in Josh Morgan. Possibly the punt returner too?

Patrick Willis/Justin Smith needs to be more of a vocal leader and pull the D together because they just fall apart and nobody steps up (whether vocally or by example).

Isaac Bruce needs to get out of there. Crabtree, Hill, and Morgan are the future and he has no business being in there.

Dashon Goldson sucks. He has practically no range and sucks at tackling. He tackles with his shoulder rather than his arms, which end up in misses. If you look back at Greg Jennings' long TD, it was Goldson's failed shoulder tackle that resulted in the long gain.

Mark Roman is the worst DB in the league. All he does is take up space and do nothing. 'Nuff said.

So now I ask the nation:

Which OC (unemployed or in a contract year) would best suit the Forty Niners in the 2010-2011 season and why?

I think the best bet for us at OC is Clyde Christensen of the colts. He's their WRs coach. Singletary interviewed him but probably didn't like what he saw because back then he was thinking of having a more run-oriented offense whereas now he would like a balanced attack. Right now, I bet Singletary would like to have Christensen as the OC.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Thomas Clayton also looked great in the preseason two straight years. I’m not anti-Nate Davis, but I’m against people over-reacting about what the 49ers have in him. More on this tomorrow morning.

I just want to see what he can do in the regular season.

I’m not saying he’ll be good. I’m just saying we need a change at QB because Shaun and Alex are both mediocre QBs.

Actually

Thomas Clayton always sucked. He ran a 4.65 40 and was a terrible blocker with stone hands. The fans were in love with his body — he had little talent. He is nothing like Nate Davis who has obvious talent.

Only reason it’s still in is because it’s at least attempting to generate discussion. SSC24, I think you should include comments on who YOU would want as offensive coordinator. Just asking who people want is fine, but you’ll get more responses if you actually offer your own thoughts on options. So, go ahead and edit your FanPost.

Are you freaking retarded!?

You just stated that Alex Smith was screwed in the way he was brought into the league, ie throwing him into the game before he was ready, and your saying you want them to throw Nate Davis in, who hasn’t gotten reps since training camp? Dude, get your head out of your a$$.

Goldson, if he doesn’t make mental mistakes is better than Roman in coverage. However, it seems like Goldson is very susceptible to the mental mistakes and he flat out doesn’t have the physical talent to make up for it.

Ya, it's a mess...don't know where to begin...Let me explain:

Smith has had 5 coordinators in 5 years. Nate be exposed to the NFL and fail/succeed but in the end progress. Alex Smith cannot succeed because his time of growth is over. He’s, in other words, grown and not learned anything. The fact that the team needs another OC only complicates the mess.

That's ridiculous

The brain doesn’t magically stop learning football after 5 years in the NFL. Come one, relative statistics, meaning relative to the way most quarterbacks are brought along in the NFL. Both Nate Davis and Alex Smith need continuity in an offensive system, but Smith is much more likely to succeed right now than Davis. You also didn’t address the fact that Nate Davis hasn’t seen any real reps since training camp. All these people calling for Nate Davis to step in infuriate me to no end. How is a man supposed to play in the NFL when he has seen a minute section of the playbook, and actually practiced said plays even less?

Or do you hate it when people just throw names out there. Cam Cameron? Are you serious? He has only been with the Ravens for two years (2nd yr now), and has known the HC for 28 years. Do you think he is going to get fired or something? Is he going to leave and come to 49ers? Cmon. Let’s take a little more time and think about who you are bringing to the table.

by hudd07 on Nov 23, 2009 9:13 PM PST up reply actions

I hate it

It’s the same affliction that prompts fans to put in Nate Davis. None of the guys in that list will be any better than what we have right now.

by smileyman on Nov 23, 2009 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

yup.

Barrows had a great line the other day on Davis and said, the backup QB is ALWAYS the fan favorite when the starter is struggling whether or not its warranted.

The fact is, we have questions with QB, so logically we assume the back up guy would do better. The fact is, that he isn’t getting any reps. He is NOT ready people. Get over it. COULD he be, yes, is he, NO! Smith gives us the best chance to win, he shows he can get it done when we get more aggressive and open it up. I feel like it’s the coaches NOT the QB so much.

by hudd07 on Nov 23, 2009 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, consistency is the common counter-argument I receive when speaking of firing Raye.

But think about it:

Would you rather have idiocy for continuity or take a chance on what may possibly be a great OC?

We knew entering the season that Raye was nothing special. But Clyde Christensen has potential to be a great OC. Remember that we almost made the playoffs in Martz’s first year as OC, and he was not very good (did not use VD at all pretty much, and barely ran with Gore).

Christensen

Don’t forget that the 49ers already interviewed Christensen last year. He was the Colts wide receiver coach last season. This year he’s still WR coach, but he was also made assistant head coach. I wonder if he’s been promised the future OC position when Tom Moore retires.

by bong_gabilya on Nov 22, 2009 6:51 PM PST reply actions

Shanahan

He had two good years when he inherited a Hall of Fame QB. After that he didn’t do much. He had 4 games left last season and needed 1 win and couldn’t get his players to play to win. On top of that it was the team he put together (players HE drafted) and he stunk it up in Denver. he is an offensive coordinator at best unless he ahs a great DC with him. He’s so arrogant he will cause issues with his assistants. Site Decorum firing Sing.

I think he DOES want to be HC

but like I said, he has money, he is getting older, has nothing to prove, and MAY want to come back and rekindle some nostalgia. Just think it would be AWESOME if he just wanted to get back to calling plays instead of having to work 20 hours a day, sleeping in the office. Spend time with the grandkids and let’s get this offense fixed.

GOD

Enough with this Nate Davis talk. Listen i think he does have great upside and with some more seasoning he could be our QB of the future. But put Manning behind that line and with the play calling in the 1st half and i doubt he does much better. Smith had absolutely no chance to do anything in the 1st half and it cannot be placed on him. Regarding the INT, this was the only time Smith lined up behind center in the 2nd half and look what happened. We need to run an offense the favors the strengths of the team and that is a spread formation. This is pretty obvious, i will be calling for blood if the 49ers don’t start the Jaguars game out of that formation.

Singletary obviously saw that Jackson was down before where the spotted it, the refs just blew the call, Jackson was down 1 yard before the 1st down marker.

Anyone who thinks we should fire Singletary has completely lost it, in other years this team would have given up down 20-3 at the half, not in 2009. Now the play calling or play caller needs to change, in that i agree.

Regarding OC, i saw someone mention Charlie Weiss on another post and that makes so much sense. He likes to work out of a spread offense and that fits to the abilities of our offensive playmakers, plus he is sure to be fired following the season. That would be a great hire

you picked the wrong guy when you used Peyton Manning as an example. He would have simply audibled out of those calls and moved up and down the field. The guy is a playing OC.

Alex Smith played fine.

Isaac Bruce doesn’t play too much.

I doubt you know a damn thing about who is being vocal on the defense.

Jimmy Raye is fine. He just needs to make some adjustments, and Singletary needs to allow it.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Nov 23, 2009 9:26 AM PST reply actions

Alex Smith has thrown 6 TD’s when he has the opportunity to play out of a formation that depends less on the line holding blocks for him, I think that if the play calling consistantly used Alex Smith’s strengths were used this team could possibly score on a more consistant basis. I am no football guru, this just my observation from watching the games.

BEST POSITION

WHAT WAS THAT THAT SING SAID IN TRAINING CAMP. WE NEED TO PUT THE PLAYERS IN THE RIGHT POSITION TO SUCEED, WELL THE BEST POSITION FOR SMITH TO SUCEED IS SPREAD FORMATION SO KEEP HIM THERE UNTIL YOU CAN GET AN OFFENSIVE LINE BUILD TO PROTECT LIKE THEY SHOULD AND THEN PUT DAVIS IN THE REST OF THE SEASON TO SEE WHERE HE STANDS SO WE KNOW WHAT POSITION TO GET IN THE UPCOMING DRAFT.

Just making sure I understand

So the concept is to fire the current OC of the 49ers and put in WR Coach for the Colts as the OC. This is the same Colts that have Peyton Manning as (as has been noted) an on the field OC and the old OC that is now a consultant and the current OC? Is that the plan proposed there?

And with a circumspect at best offensive line we are planning on putting in Nate Davis and letting him guide the team as Quarterback? Is that the proposed plan there?

Pardon my skepticism but I just don’t see it. I must be blind or myopic in some respect but the plan seems a bit ..well don’t know words to put it. Let’s just say that a certain rapper from Atlanta comes to mind and I don’t mean MC Hammer.
