Better Know The Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey Niners Fans

I'm John, one of the writers over at SBN's Jaguars blog Big Cat Country. My Jaguars make their second coast to coast trip this year to play the 49ers. Our last trip, a 41-0 loss to Seattle, wasn't the best and things couldn't have gone much worse. The 49ers will certainly give us a tough test this week.

PS: We at BCC have a weekly radio show every Wednesday night at 10PM EST/7pm Pacific and this week Fooch will be on discussing the upcoming game. You can check it out here http://www.blogtalkradio.com/bigcatcountry

EDIT: THE RADIO SHOW WILL BE TONIGHT AT 10PM EST/7 Pacific

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I have MJD on my fantasy team

Can he score like 40 or 50 points and yet the Jags defense still plays poorly enough to lose? :-)

Serious questions now:

1. How have Eugene Monroe and Ebon Britton played thus far? How do most Jags fans feel about those picks in retrospect?

2. Are you guys a full 3-4 defense or still a hybrid 4-3/3-4? Is there a certain way most Jags fans want to go full time?

3. Why is your pass rush so bad? (31st in the NFL in adjusted sack rate)

4. What do you guys think about David Garrard? Are most people happy with him and do you see him being the starter for several more years or do you see a replacement being drafted this year? How much do you love/hate all the Tebow to the Jags talk?

Thanks in advance.

Filling in for John

1: The 1st Gene Smith draft iis by far he best we have since a long time. All were part of the 53 man roster (5th round pick Jarett Dillard broke his ankle on week 10 against the Jets); they all are showed some flashes (except maybe 7th round pick WR Tiquan Underwood)
3rd pick DT Knighton; 3rd pick CB Derek Cox are all starters; 4th pick Mike Thomas is a very good multiple fuction weapon for us; Dillard was solid specially on 3rd downs; he made big plays; we called hiom Baby Holt; or Bolt…6th round pick Zach Miller is improving his is also a multiple fuctional weapon. Rashad Jennings shows more and more that he can be the backup of MJD

Biritton and Monroe: Eben is playing better; he is more solid in more of the time; of course he is not on the elite level; bu t he is still playing well. Monroe is improving.; but sometimes he struggling; although he switched off Mario Williams totally on week 3 !

We played 3-4 during the first 7 games; mostly because veterena DE Reggie Hayward (who was sadly our best pass rusher of the team); to feature rookie DT Terrance Knighton on NT role. To be honest with you it didn’t worked. Jaguars don’t have the personel to run a 3-4. So against the Chiefs the Jags switched back to 4-3 (sometimes they do 3-4 still); and they are stuck with it this yer.
I hope they stay at the 3-4. We don’t have 3-4 LBs; although the LB corp is the best part of the defense. So I’M glad off the switch back

3. Because the Jaguars lost their best passrusher(Reggie Hayward) and the rest of the DEs are cannot finish the play. Derrick Harvey is now more of a runblocker; then a passrusher. He is a major disapointment. He was drafted (traded away 4 or 5 extra picks to get him) to have double digit numbers; yet he doesn’t have a sack this year. In week 5; he didn’t do anything with a 4th string LT who was activated from the PS a game before in Seattle.

4. David. He is OK. He will not be an elite QB; and sometimes inconsistent. But he is lead the Jags in the last 2 games come from behingd game winning drive; showing lately Clutch QB signs! If he has a good day; then it is very hard to top him specialy now when he has qulaity receivers(Holt; MSW; Mike Thomas; and surprisingly this year MArcedes Lewis-former 1st round pick). Tebow: Well he need here only to boost the ticket sales; nothing more. He is not fitting the system; and I hope someone (Raiders; Redskins or someone else) will draft him
before the Jags pick in the 1st round. We need a QB for develop to the future; but now we have much bigger mostly defensive needs.

+1 MJD? Well Watch out for him; he will having a special motivation on Sunday… Let’s say that for now…

I could easily seeing the Raiders go for Tebow

They picked Jamarcus Russell after all.

And are you really from Budapest. If so that’s really cool that you’re an NFL fan.

I think most people at BCC not like

the draft Tebow in the 1st round idea. If he will be picked by us in the first round; it will be doing so because of ticket sales…
Our new draftguru GM; Gene Smith; who has a veeeery good draft thinks he is 3rd round prospect(I think without the hype he is that good If you watching the prospect via who is NFL ready/upside-downside/risk point of view….)
So I rooting for Oakland or Washington too pick him before us….

Sell tickets?

I never quite understood that. Who is a guy who won’t be playing QB next year going to sell tickets? I mean listen to the fans, you guys don’t even want him. Just because he is a Florida guy, doesn’t mean he is going to put butt’s in the seat. To get people to buy tickets, you have to win, Tebow won’t do that.

by hudd07 on Nov 23, 2009 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree

Tebow is hugely popular. He gets drafted and the Jaguars sell lots of Jerseys with his name on them and generate lots of excitement for the season.

Not that I think he’s going to be a good QB in the NFL, but he’ll definitely put butts in the seat (at least for 1 season anyway)

by smileyman on Nov 23, 2009 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

I don’t see how, seeing as how he won’t be playing his rookie year. Maybe some extra people will buy season tickets before the season or something…

by Brendan Scolari on Nov 24, 2009 1:57 AM PST up reply actions

Tebow is the local hero-he and his parents live there;

You want to know how popular is he in Jville? When Garrard throw an incomplete pass some (stupid) fans(?) chanting his name. If the Jags draft Tebow there will be a sellout season(and when they see; that he cannot help the team; )in opposite he is hurtinh us in my opinion…) I think the jags will be in danger.
I would not risk that move.
But maybe because of the ticketsales; the Jags MUST draft him; to survive…

by Zoltan from Budapest on Nov 23, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

If they do

Then the jacksonville jaguars fate will depend on Tebows shoulders. He will leading them to the highest point )I mean Superbowl!) or fall with them to the deep(I’M mean JAgs leave Jacksonville)

Sorry about my mistypings; I’m a bit tired; it’s 6 :45 o the morning here; I watched MNF; I’M not slept; (I don’t do that most of the time on Mondays to Tuesdays when the NFL season is under way…)

If they draft him, they HAVE to start him.

But the problem is

Garrard is a much better QB (with a huuuuge contract; which will have 3 more years…) then Tebow will be next year…

The school he played for was undefeated for over a decade so that isn’t saying too much but he might be their best all time player.

However, California H.S. doesn’t have a state championship, they are very much a BCS and actually became a BCS recently. It’s not like being an undefeated school in another state.

oh

They became a BCS?

They don’t have a state champ but they do have a playoff. My junior year, for example, we played in the CCS championship game. Are they now choosing who they think are the two best section champions and putting them in a state championship game?

Can MJD just take a knee the entire game?

We could use the win. There is something in this for you, I know you guys are getting tired of Jack Del Rio and he’s probably the only legitimate coach would take the Raiders job. We are talking Al Davis here, he is disoriented after naps and would trade a draft pick for Jack Del Rio. Some would argue the Raiders would be a better if their offense just took knee each play so it could be a perfect match. What do you think, eh?

by bignerd on Nov 23, 2009 1:31 PM PST reply actions

Jack is okay

I like him; I think he is very good with young players. He has is issues(rlooking a bit inconsisitent and sometimes moody-like his team); but he is much like Garrard. Not an elite HC; but he can put his team to great things (at the ’07 playoffs; when the Jaguars would played a bit better against the 18-0 Pats on that playoff game; the Jags would played on Superbowl XLII..).

Congrats on the Road Win in advance

1. How many tackles with MJD break?
2. When the Jaguars go up by 21 points, will you really be scared if the 49ers make a second half comeback and get within striking distance?
3. How does Frank Gore match up against the Jags front seven, you know, if he had an OLine that was decent?
4. Who can cover Crabtree?
5. How have the Jags done stopping TEs this season?

by Andrew Davidson on Nov 23, 2009 1:47 PM PST reply actions

Thanbks but the game was in Jacksonville yesterday...

1. If he has a good game; he is unstoppable; and he will have SPECIAL MOTIVATION ON THIS SUNDAY…Although Paul Posluszny; the Bills MLB stopped him almost alone. And I know Patrcik Willis can do the same if he playing well on Sunday… It will be a very big matchup MJD vs Willis on Sunday!

2. No. The reason is the David Garrard turned 3 games this year from come from beind situations. This offense is ready to go. Have great character; good leaders (David; MJD; Torry Holt; Mike Sims-Walker). Yesterday the Jags played really bad; and even on hat game they wre capable to do a late come from behind drive which ended up with the game winning TD (and a 2pt attempt made by Garrard).

3: The Jags Run Defense is good. Other then Chris Johnson on week 8 who torched us 227 rushing yard; they dlimit every RB under 100 yards (even CJ on week 4) 2 weeks ago the limit Thomas Jones in New York under 70 yards. Yesterday they limit Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lnych combined under 60…I respect Frank Gore; but I think the front seven can handle him.
I have more fears about the receivers…

4. Good question. Our best DB; 3 time probowler Rashean Mathis might not playing on Sunday. I think Derek Cox a rookie CB might cover him. He is started every game this year; is solid; not great; but solid. Has 2 picks. The secondary is a bit ravaged; and the achilles heal of the Jags right now. But guys like San Considine; Gerald Alexander; and recent sign FA Anthony Smith (who caught the game ending INT yesterday) can make it. I think there will be no or limited passrush on Alex Smith; so he have the time to choose his picks (hey Bills backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has gone almost 300 yards yesterday; including a 98 yard bomb to Terrell Owens..) So I think the game will depend how Smith will play on sunday…

5. I hope Sean Considine will cover him. He had 2 veeery good gameslately. In New York he played his best game on his career against the Jets; yesterday he had a pick. I think the duel between him and Vernon Davis will be another key matchup (like the Willis VS MJD) of this game. As I said I fear about the 49ers receivers; I respect Vernon Davis and I saw on TNF against the Bears how good Crabtree can be. It will depend on the pressure on Alex Smith; and the way he will play on sunday; how this game will turn out

I'M not sure

I have good news for you; bad news for us. Jack Del Rio just said; Rashean Mathis will NOT PLAY on sunday. This means: Crabtree; Vernon Davis; Isaac Bruce will meaning BIG THREAT to us…And Alex Smith can win (or lose) this game…

You can still see why he will be in the Hall of Fame when he plays. His route running is top-notch and the way he plays the game… he is very… I don’t know… professional when he plays, I suppose. He expects himself to make every pass that comes his way. Sadly, you don’t see him playing the sidelines as much anymore, likely due to losing some of his speed. Despite that, he is still a danger over the middle. He will usually have 2-3 big catches a game. Big as in an important first down.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Nov 24, 2009 11:44 AM PST up reply actions

Tory Holt will not be in the HOF. If Chris Carter cannot get in the 1st two years and Art Monk took nearly two decades than Tory Holt has no chance. Issac Bruce will get in, Kurt Warner will get in, Marshall Faulk will get and Dick Vermeil but that’s it for the Rams of that era.

by bignerd on Nov 24, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

Hm

Cris Carter played 16 seasons, though his first and last seasons were only a few games each… like, 5 maybe. A total of 234 games. He had 13,899 receiving yards, with a 12 yard average. Never won a Superbowl, though they were right there an should have likely won. He has 130 receiving TDs, behind Jerry Rice, Randy Moss and TO. He has been in 8 Pro Bowls. He will get into the HOF, though it might be another two years. But he’ll be in.

Torry Holt has played 10 seasons, and is in the middle of his 11th. Including this season’s games he has played a total of 168 games (about 50 less that Carter). Yet he has 13,176 yards (about 700 less that Carter). 14.5 avg per catch, and 78.4 a game (compared to Carter’s 59.4). He was with the Rams as a rookie to win a Super Bowl and has been to 7 Pro Bowls. He has a small TD number to Carter with only 74 – but, again, if you remember a quote on Carter: “All he does is get touchdowns.”

Torry is 4th in Yard per game all time, and is 11th in career receiving yards (he needs about 20 to go p to 10th). Chris Carter is 8th. If Torry stays in the NFL a few more seasons, maybe 3, I’d say that he’ll overtake Carter.

Now, there is no way Torry is a shoe in, or that he will be voted in on his first year of he could be. Far from that. Moss, Owens, Marvin Harrison are all better candidates and likely will continue to be. But I don’t have any doubt that Holt is a HOF quality player, and that he should, one day, be voted in.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Nov 24, 2009 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

I don't have a doubt he is quality HOF player either

I see him as the odd man out. I’m looking at the politics of it and there are too many other guys from this generation ahead of him. By the time he’s on top of the list the focus will be on the next generation which means he’s left out in the cold.

Issac Bruce was the signature WR for the Rams and Holt’s probably going to end up the Andre Reed.

I see

Kind of like Issac Bruce last year for us.

Does that mean Holt will suck next season?

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Hew has an other role then being a WR

He is like the second WR coach of the team. The rest of the receivers I think look up to him like Patrick Willis looking up to “Samurai Mike”
He is very good for the moral; and he can still play in a decent level. He has the 2nd most receiving yards and receptions. The guy is still reliable. And a huge boost for us.

When the ST. Loius game looked like a lost game; he collected the offense around himself; took a motivation speech; and the Jags scored a TD after that; the lead to the W!

Life without knowledge is death in disguise

Hey guys nothing football related

I’m coming up tomorrow morning from Southern California to San Francisco to watch my Jaguars play this weekend. My girlfriend wants to do all the tourist stuff on Friday and Saturday before the game Sunday and we’re not gonna do a rental car. Instead of paying individual bus fares where could I get a 3 day bus pass.

Also would this pass apply to the BART, cable cars or muni.

bus pass

The bus pass is good for Muni, maybe the cable cars, but not BART.

To get these passes here’s some info. Walgreen’s tend to have them. Also, the Powell Street BART/MUNI station has a transit center to purchase stuff and I’d imagine they sell bus passes:
