Attendance at 49ers home games this season

For those who have attended 49ers games this year or live in the bay area, how has the 49er fan attendance been this year? I live in the Midwest and from the look on the television it seems that the stadium is not full. Have there been black-out problems in the SF area or no? I know that there have been many issues with the NFL blacking out games but I didn't think it would be an issue with the 49er faithful. Just out of curiosity.

On TV it looked pretty packed yesterday

But for some reason, for each home game this season, I have noticed that the stands dont begin filling up until 2 or 3 minutes in to the 1st quarter. I have wondered about this because I remember going to games 15 years ago or so (when I lived in the bay area) and I remember the stadium being packed 30 minutes prior to kickoff.

Is there a reason for this Faithful? Getting beers? Food? Parking messed up? People leave their houses too late? Delayed in packing up the tailgating party? Not having a very good team moving close to a decade now? I don’t know….but I have been curious about this.

Tailgating

Hightened security

People need longer to get in the stadium so the lines are quite long as the KO happens. Plus the difficulty of getting there by car.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I went to the Seattle game and yesterdays game

The stadium never is completely full, but there is good attendance. The main reason for the drop off in attendance has got to be due to the drop off in performance over the years for the Niners. On the bright side, tickets are easily scalpable every game for $20 or less.

the stadium gets pretty full

the only game that blew me away was the bears game. That was the 1st game I have attended that had sooo many opposing teams fans. I mean seriously, everywhere I turned I saw blue and orange. There was even a point in the game when the stadium chant of “Lets go Bears” began, it was very loud and clear as to what the chant was. I was underneath the Jumbotron and the closest niner was 3 rows down, I went with 12 buddyies, who are ALL bears fans.
The only person that high-fived me everytime the niners did something good was some girl(cute), right in front of me. She was there with her BF(who was a bears fan), she just went for the company because later in the game she told me that she was a Packers fan.
I’m just glad the niners won, because that just gave me more people to bash at the end of the game. I just don’t understand how I watch games on TV, and the stadium is filled with home team fans, visiting team fans are scattered here and there, but in San Francisco it seems like 1 in 5 is a visiting teams fan. Oh well, obviously its something I can’t fix, as long as cute girls sit in front of me to high-five I’m cool with it……….

No blackouts since 1981

I was there on Sunday and there were more no-shows that any home game this season. Jags aren’t a big traveling team and it seems in most stadiums now there are always a bunch of seats occupied by the road team. Understandable in the current economy and with many people preferring to watch from home unless the product on the field is worth the high ticket price.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Been to all home games this year

As working for the media, I get to go to the home games and I’m there well over an hour before kickoff.

Stadium doesn’t fill up that well as it used to, probably because team isn’t that good. Sunday’s game was about 75% full (blame it on tailgating, Thanksgiving weekend, whatever)

There are no blackouts and people tend to file in later. 80-90% full most of the time.

Blackouts

I think that some local television stations buy out large numbers of tickets if there is a threat for a blackout, just so that their station can actually air the game. I don’t think the 49ers and local TV stations have had this issue so far this year, though.

The team usually papers the tickets. Meaning they buy the tickets, since technically they are paying themselves they only end up paying the tax.

by bignerd on Dec 1, 2009 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Not true

Teams only keep 60% of ticket revenue. The other 40% goes to the league for revenue sharing. Whenever a team buys the tickets it loses money.

by smileyman on Dec 1, 2009 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

Good point

I forgot teams have to share ticket sales. Very good point so the price of purchasing their own tickets is even higher.

I wonder...

… how un-“sold out” the Raiders games are. You would think the team would be more than willing to foot the bill if only four or five thousand tickets separates your team from having exposure to not having exposure.

Maybe they don’t want to showcase their sucktitude?

by sfgfan on Dec 1, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

I’m sure some stat nuts has determined the optimal revenue for the situation for the given team. If 5000 tickets are still available it’s probably more profitable for the team to buy. If 10,000 tickets available its probably more profitable with the blackout.

That makes sense...

I guess I was just speaking more from a fan perspective than a business perspective.
