Around SBN: Super Bowl XLVI: Eli Manning And The Meaning Of 'Elite'

We've got one heck of a game tonight between two prolific offenses. It'll be interesting to see what kind of shootout we get out of this game. Feel free to use this thread to discuss what should be an exciting matchup.

Oh man, that should have been picked. Andrew Davidson is swearing right now.

For some reason

I’d love the Saints and the Colts to go undefeated and meet in the superbowl. I just think that would be epic.

Of course what I really hope is that the niners beat Dallas, the Vikings, and the Saints en route to a rematch with the Colts in the superbowl and the 6th ring. That would be the ultimate run.

A guy can dream.

I hope that they both go undefeated and meet in the Super Bowl because those old Dolphins players are going to be like, “oh, what the hell?” if it does happen.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Nov 30, 2009 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

Maybe the most arrogant group of guys ever. Get over it. The 18-1 Niners were far more dominant, and guess who they beat in the superbowl that year?

Saints-Colts in an 18-0 match-up that goes into the first overtime in SB history.

Ahhh, dreams.

Unfortunately, I’m sure it’ll be more like the ‘98 season when the Vikings and Broncos were supposed to be that first undefeated showdown. Chances are one or both teams won’t go all the way.

Pats vs Eagles

Last time I can think of the two favorites that made it. Pats vs Packers was another instance.

Pretty Sure

Any QB could put up excellent numbers if he had the years of time in the pocket that Brady always gets.

by cassusriff on Nov 30, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

...?

Where is this coming from? Gore looks just fine. There hasn’t been a single hole made for him the past couple weeks, and he’s only had like ten runs per game.

You can never resist the game... nor could I... we're the same, so don't even try.

by James Brady on Nov 30, 2009 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

I think

Just like a situation where a QB loses trust in his line and gets happy feet, RB’s can have the same issue. I think Gore hasn’t had that trust and vision because the gameplan has been so inconsistent, and the injury couldn’t have helped.

"We want WINNERS!" - Coach Singletary

by cassusriff on Nov 30, 2009 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

I agree, Gore’s fine, he has no running blocking.

Also, my first reaction was that the 9’ers D would’ve easily stopped that run.

I’d love to make the playoffs but I hope the 49ers avoid playing the Saints minus Drew Brees getting struck by a bus. Nothing can be gained from that kind of a butt kicking.

by bignerd on Nov 30, 2009 8:42 PM PST reply actions

Conclusion has been drawn about the spread

1 Pats are in the same O as they have been for years
2 Pats have Brady
3 Pats have Moss and Welker as wideouts
4. We have Smith Crabtree and Davis
5 Spread didn’t work and the team that runs it the most with one of the leagues elite QB’s and are not winning consistently.

In closing, what works is schemes to fit player strenths, and to work against any coverage, there are options in their offense for more than one coverage, they audible at the line, the 49ers are leagues behind, but still have a shot at the playoffs. We have a long way to go, hopefully Smith goes to N.O and works out with Brees in the offseason, after his trip to Disneyland!

...no?

Maybe you were watching another game…two of Brees’ five TDs came out of the shotgun, and nearly all of his big plays (minus one play action out of the I and a goal-line play) came out of a single back “spread” set.

Despite being completely wrong about that, we’ll go ahead and forget the Saints for a second. Are you really saying that the Patriots lost because they ran out of an ineffective spread offense? I’m pretty sure the Patriots lost because the defense allowed the opposition to score their leisure from the very beginning of the game – not because their offensive gameplan was weak or “inconsistent”.
