Hello Niners Nation,
Jimmy from Music City Miracles here to answer any and every question you can think of about the 1-6 Tennessee Titans. As you might expect, we have been having a good week after waiting 7 weeks to get our first win. We know that this week will prove a much tougher test.
Anyway, please leave any questions you might have below and we will do our best to answer them.

Kerry Collins vs. Vince Young
What were the major differences besides the obvious mobility factor that you noticed last week, if any at all?
by Drew K on Nov 4, 2009 12:13 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
That was pretty much it
Vince threw the ball more accurately on Sunday than he has at pretty much any point. Hopefully he will be able to keep that up.
The obvious advantage, as you mentioned, is that he has the mobility to scramble for 1st downs and keep plays alive.

How do you feel about...
The 49ers second ranked rushing defense versus the Titans second ranked rushing offense?
You can never resist the game... nor could I... we're the same, so don't even try.

Not great
Should be a fun match-up to watch. I expect for a lot more of the load to fall on Vince’s shoulders this week than last.

Yeah, I have a buddy who's a Titans fan
We pretty much went over it several times and decided that Vince will have to beat the Niners, not Johnson. For some reason I’m not confident.

I dunno.
Different running styles, different blocking schemes, different angles of attack . . . it’s not so cut and dry. AP pretends to be an inside runner but is always looking to bounce outside.
The Titans try a lot of quick tosses and quick development plays to get Chris Johnson off tackle or outside. If there is a weakness in the 49ers run defense it has been those type of plays. Steve Slaton got outside twice on those kind of plays. Although Addai ran the play 10 times he did manage to get outside the defense once. The difference is Chris Johnson will turn that run into 6 points and not 10-15 yards.

That's exactly right.
The problem with CJ isn’t that you can’t stop him. You can absolutely stop him. You’ll see him gain -1 yard all the time. But if he gets the edge, no one on the field can catch him, even with an angle and a running start.

As Warren Sapp says,
Just get off the field and get ready for the kickoff. There’s no way you’re catching him.

That just places more emphasis on containment.
It just seems like SF is going through a gauntlet of the best RB. Jackson, Turner, Slaton, Peterson. Next week is Forte. SF is still second in the league with rushing yards allowed per game and first with yards per attempt.

There’s really only one question I think anybody has about the Titans and the astounding 0-fer-whatever start.
How did this happen? I know the schedule has been unkind and you’ve lost a couple of players… but, my God, shouldn’t your team be significantly better than we’ve seen?

QB play and Haynesworth
No one will admit it but short offensive drives and turnovers and lack of Haynesworth. It’s no mystery.

And loss of all of the starting CBs.
That didn’t help at all. It was a BIG difference last week with Finnegan and Fuller back out there.

I’m going to have to disagree. Hayensworth is an important subtraction, but I would contend that the loss of Jim Schwartz had a signficantly greater impact.

You know...
I havn’t heard that excuse too much but I think it has a LOT of merit. This is a team that lost a guy that only played 50-60% of their snaps, but little else. I think it has a lot to do with Schwartz as it seems like the Titans aren’t in the correct positions to make a play.

Not very
I can only remember one other time that Bud Adams, the Titans owner, has spoken out, and it was in 2004 when the team started out 1-4. That team turned around and made the AFC Championship game. This team isn’t going to do that, so we will see what happens.

Welcome Jimmy
1. What’s been the cause for the Titans havin such a terrible pass defense this season? They are allowing 299 pypg, it can’t all be on Albert Haynesworth leaving, so I’m wondering how bad the secondary has been injured?
2. Over/Under on Chris Johnson’s 20+ yard runs vs. the 49ers Run D?
3. Last year, the 49ers had a problem stopping bigger backs from picking up yards when teams needed them most. I understand White is leaner this season, but he should be a valuable assest providing a nice change of pace to CJ. Do they Titans plan to get him a lot of carries?
4. Does Alex Smith scare you guys at all? (Seriously)
by Andrew Davidson on Nov 4, 2009 1:00 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I'm not Jimmy, but if you don't mind...
1. The change of Defensive Coordinator didn’t help. He may or may not be a serviceable DC, but he had been a terrific Secondary Coach. The new Secondary Coach doesn’t seem to be all that good; both the safeties—Pro-Bowl safeties a year ago—have been frequently out of position all season long.
Added to that, the Titans’ starting Nickel Back and both starting CBs have been out for several weeks. It was after those guys got hurt that this team went from losing close games to losing by HUGE margins.
Also, Kerry Collins played well last year. This year, he has been dreadful. That led to a LOT of 3-and-outs. Which in turn out even more strain on the Defense.
And finally… Punt Return Failure. If you fumble a punt, you give your opponent a short field. This has happened A LOT.
2. I’d expect at least one. Even in horrific losing efforts, CJ still rushes for 130+ yards and has 7 or so ypc. Seriously, check the stats from the Pats game. CJ actually played well.
3. They like to put in CJ early and then bring in LenDale when the Defense is tired. Most would expect the opposite to happen (i.e. wear down a Defense with your bigger back), but that’s not what they do. If the Titans have a lead and want to run the clock, you will see heavy doses of LDW.
4. Does VY scare you?
Seriously, I have no idea what to expect. Just as VY can sometimes dominate a game, he can also make huge errors. I expect Smith is the same way. What scares me is that the Titans D-Line hasn’t been consistent getting pressure. I think if the Titans can bring pressure, then mistakes can follow. If not, well, most QBs can make you pay when they have time. TN’s secondary hasn’t been great, so I’m not expecting miracles.
DannoE

Punt Return Failure. If you fumble a punt, you give your opponent a short field. This has happened A LOT.
You guys can have Arnaz Battle and can take Brandon Jones back. We’ve had similar issues in the punt return game the previous two games, thanks to the Niners FO cutting Rossum. Battle muffed a punt that cost us 7 points in the Houston game, and Jones fielded a punt at the 4-yard line last week.
I’d expect at least one. Even in horrific losing efforts, CJ still rushes for 130+ yards and has 7 or so ypc. Seriously, check the stats from the Pats game. CJ actually played well.
I actually traded for Chris Johnson in a FF league I’m in leading up to last week’s game vs. the Jaguars. Great timing, eh? I figured CJ has two 20+ runs in his tank this Sunday, and like someone else has already pointed out, Johnson takes those runs a lot longer than other RBs the 49ers have allowed the edge.
If the Titans have a lead and want to run the clock, you will see heavy doses of LDW
So there’s no new gameplan at all? Just the same old Titans plan to run CJ and spell him with LenDale? I’m a bit relieved because last year the 49ers had trouble with the bigger backs, they seemed to wear out our defense far too easily.
Does VY scare you?
Yes, and no. Would I be happier if Kerry Collins were in the pocket? Probably, because he wouldn’t be able to evade the pass rush like VY can. At the same time, I’m confident in our OLBs to contain VY and keep him from scrambling our eggs. Vince Young has a rocket, and our safeties don’t exactly keep everything in front of them, so if he gets time I definitely don’t want to see him test out his arm strength on a deep route.
Thanks for giving me your two cents, should be a tough match-up for the 49ers (I think its the toughest test they have so far with all the circumstances and events leading up to the game).

sad for me...
Out of 2 leagues, I have Den Defense, Orton, Moreno, and Marshall. LOL. I’m winning though. Marshall was a LATE round grab, Moreno was a flyer, Orton was signed as backup QB (I actually rode him last year to playoffs with his hot mid year run when 3 of my QBs went down with injury so it was an emotional pick ;-) , and Den Def was a waiver wire pickup.
by hudd07 on Nov 5, 2009 12:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I've got Denver DEF in a league also
I also have the Philadelphia Team DEF in the league, so I’m quite comfortable. Denver was the FA acquistion, obviously.
And the guy I traded Moreno to, dropped him, so I picked him back up. Basically I traded Marshall and Megatron for VD and Every Coach’s Dream. I felt it was a pretty good deal for me. It’s a small league with a bunch of close friends, so I have to wonder if my friend was doing me a favour when he hit the accept option (he’s ahead of me in the standings, but we share a 3-5 record).

it was a good trade.
I have a pretty solid team. I have Roddy White, Marshall, Megatron as WR so Marshall is my #3 which I feel comfortable with.

Titans D-Line hasn’t been consistent getting pressure.
That will almost assuredly change this week. We’ve been calling our offensive line the LOLine for weeks for a reason. And then we lost out two starting tackles the last two weeks. If you guys have problems putting pressure on Smith, you guys would have problems putting pressure on Crompton.
I think if the Titans can bring pressure, then mistakes can follow.
Alex is used to pressure. He had it in 2006, 2007, skipped 2008 due to a related injury in 2007, and now in 2009 it’s better, but not by much. Not saying he won’t make mistakes, but he’s at least used to pressure… not that that’s a good thing really. I fully expect plenty of pressure.

CJ vs NE
That is a little skewed though don’t you think? I mean how hard do you think NE was playing the run? I mean come on, your team was down 45-0 by halftime. I doubt NE gave much thought to the run and sure the defense let their guard down a smidge.

Granted, I only watched the first quarter before turning it off in disgust, but he had...
…at least 2 runs for about 30 yards total in that one quarter. That was the ENTIRE offense, so no, I don’t think they stopped watching the run? Why should they? KC was 2/12 for -7 yards. They literally didn’t get ANYTHING out of the passing game… at all.

1. The secondary has been banged up and Nick Harper was terrible when he was healthy. CB was the #1 depth concern heading into the season, and both starters and the nickel were out at the same time. That was the biggest part of it, but not having Fat Albert to rush the passer didn’t help.
2. 2
3. LenDale spells CJ for a couple of drives early in games, comes in for short yardage situations and gets the bulk of the carries if the Titans have the lead late. I don’t expect that to change this week.
4. The way this pass defense has played this season I am scared by anyone, but if you are asking me if I am scared if the defensive backs actually play their assignments and don’t get hurt….no.

I’m defenitely not please to know that Finnegan is back and healthy, especially since he came off the injury and picked off Garrard in his first game back. I also see CJ gettting at least 2 runs of 20+, he’s just too damn good.

Your defense is ranked (31st) overall in yards given up, just 5 shy of 400 per game and dead last (32nd) in points given up per game with 30.1. Is there any reason to think or beleive that this defense will finish higher than what they are currently ranked? Or are you all already giving up on the season and talking about what draft position you will end up with?
by Drew K on Nov 4, 2009 2:12 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I can answer that
Yes, there is reason to believe they will improve. One part of the their secondary issues has been blown assignments. Watching the Texans vs Titan game the Texans were completing passes where there wasn’t a Titan defender withing 10 yards of the pass. Those kind of issues can be solved with more coaching and practice.
Also, the Titan’s have good talent on the defensive line. It worked better with Hanyesworth but it’s still a talented unit. The Titan defensive line did dominate the Steelers game for 3 quarters but haven’t played up to that potential each week.

It was reported by ESPN and a couple other media outlets that Daniel Snyder personally had dinner with Haynesworth prior to the opening of free agency. I can’t remember if it was night before the clock hit the 12 o’clock opening or the evening prior. Anyways, it was about as blatant of a tampering case one could ever get. The media sniffed it, Jeff Fisher filed a compliant and it appeared the NFL just ignored it. Next time the Titans should ask ESPN to film the meeting cause obviously their writers word isn’t strong enough evidence.
by bignerd on Nov 5, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think we take tampering to heart because the 49ers were the only team ever busted for it.
Remember when Justin Smiley signed that big deal with Miami about 35 seconds after the free agency period began? You have to wonder if the 49ers had any intention of keeping Smiley (which they did not) would they have pursued tampering charges.
Somebody needs to get their fingers slammed in the door for a tampering charge, not just a flick on the wrist. The Niners had their hand slapped with a ruler, but that was about it.

The Titans
made a long term offer to Albert before last season, and according to Albert, they were only a few million apart. He says the Titans refused to even meet him halfway. The Titans haven’t commented on that of course. I think they made an initial offer last offseason, but they weren’t willing to come anywhere close to what the Redskins gave him.
The offensive line hasn’t been playing nearly as well as they did last year. Collins only got sacked 8 times in 16+ games last season. He was sacked 6 times in 6 games this season. They looked better on Sunday, but the Jags defense isn’t a great gauge.
The best way to stop CJ is to keep him from getting to the edge because you don’t catch him if he gets to the edge.
Kenny Britt has been pretty good, but the Titans haven’t done much to get him on the field. He is the 3rd receiver, and the Titans don’t use a lot of 3 receiver sets. He has made some big plays when he has been out there though.
To me, Brandon Jones was always a tease. He would have a good camp or a good game but was never able to string any of it together. Sometimes it was because of injury and sometimes it was because he forgot how to catch the ball. I wasn’t that sad to see him go.

"from watching Chris Johnson, what is the best way to stop him?"
take a note from the Ravens’ playbook and have Ray Lewis sit on his back while Ed Reed twists his ankle as hard as he can…

Good plan
I’m all for it. Nothing is outside the rules for Mike Singletary when it comes registering a win.

If you had've taken the time
to find the full screen photo, you’d see the Ravens HC and DC flashing hand signals to the Ravens players. This is a snap shot from the practice they had, incorporating the new signals into the game plan:

Steve McNair Jr.
This isn’t a question but more of a heads up if you weren’t already aware. I noticed that your avatar is of Steve McNair…I ran across this article on the front page of Yahoo. Anyhow, it’s a good article if you haven’t read it and maybe it would be something worthy of sharing with the rest of the fans over at Music City Miracles

What was the bigger loss?....
Haynesworth, or Jim Schwartz?
I pick Schwartz out of that one. I dunno what would happen in SF if the 49ers happen to lose Manusky next season to a team like the Chargers.
Well, we're waiting....

come on drummer
don’t start getting me nervous about losing Manusky now that he’s finally a free man at DC.
by Andrew Davidson on Nov 5, 2009 5:30 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I too think it was Schwartz
It seems to me that Chuck Cecil is trying to run Schwartz’s system without Haynesworth and hasn’t really been able to figure out how to make it work. Schwartz would have been better equipped to make the adjustments.
FYI, the system is based around getting pressure with the front four and minimal blitzing, so you can see how the loss of Haynesworth could throw a wrench in that.

OK drummer question for you.....
Would you allow Manusky to leave for the Chargers next season if we could get Norv Turner for OC?
by hudd07 on Nov 5, 2009 12:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I will answer that question as well
No way.
No how.
Nuh-uh.
Drummer may think otherwise, and he’s entitled to, and I’m not trying to answer on his behalf.
by Andrew Davidson on Nov 5, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
LOL..
I don’t even want Turner back as OC. I kinda want the team to move on from the Nolan era, and I want Singletary to do so as well.
I put the Chargers out there due to Manusky’s connection with them. I dunno how this team and Singletary would have fared without the continuity at DC. The IND game showed Manusky’s confidence in the players, playing a chess match with his defense against a MVP candidate, and winning that chess match for most of the game. I’d hate for Manusky to leave, but the 49ers can breathe a bit with all of those high profile coaches that are out of work right now.
But, if Manusky leaves and TEN hires Gruden, give me Fisher for DC.
Well, we're waiting....
by drummer on Nov 5, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not that I’d be unhappy if Norv came back, because really it wouldn’t be like switching OCs at all. Jimmy Raye is a disciple of Norv anyhow.
But losing Manusky, I don’t even want to think about that yet! He’s finally coming into his own this season, and the thought of him gone just doesn’t sit well with me. I realize it’s a possibly reality, but can we just wait until the offseason before I start soiling myself in nervous anticipation of our DC leaving?
by Andrew Davidson on Nov 5, 2009 2:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Manusky isn't going anywhere
Think about Rex Ryan. He has had THE premier defense for the last what decade almost, and just got his chance. MOST of the HC jobs go to offensive masterminds. Now if Manusky was this good and our OC, I’d be making my goodbye sign and getting ready to show it off at the airport with a box of kleenex.
Our team has been crippled on the offensive side because we don’t have one philosophy over the last 5 years. It’s easier to replace a DC than an OC which is why most HC’s are offensive minded coaches to keep the continuity (sp). I don’t think Manusky is going anywhere. We aren’t even a lock down defense yet.

I think
Manusky’s deal is up after this season though. nope, actually he’s signed through the 2010 season, ok I’m relieved.

I'm too worried
There would be a line around the block of defensive coordinators willing to replace Manusky.

49ers Defensive Talent >> 49ers Offensive Talent
What I really getting at is it’s harder to replace Patrick Willis than it is Greg Manusky.
by bignerd on Nov 6, 2009 1:42 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Manusky is very familiar with the defense
and that’s something a new DC wouldn’t have, the comfort of knowing the players in the system, their limitations of what they can or cannot do. The team is showing a great continuity under Manusky, aside from the Falcons game.
A new DC would have to figure out what’s he’s got before he’d have the Niners D playing as well as Manusky has them playing. There could vey well be a line up around the block, but there aren’t as many 3-4 DCs as there are 4-3 DCs. There are even fewer effective 3-4 DCs on top of that.

How confident do you feel about your special teams, especially your kicker, in light of what could be a potentially windy game?

I have a lot of confidence in Rob Bironas
Now anything else on special teams is a little scary.

Jimmy
Just popped in to say great blog name.
Greatest name for a play ever to include names such as “The play”, “the catch” and the awesomely titled “immaculate reception”
Music City Miracle still has the best ring to it and great choice.

I'd swap Johnson for Lendale
Thanks Jimmy. All the best tomorrow. I know this sounds a bit old skool and all, but I believe in the 3 yards and a cloud of dust theory. If you can grind out tough runs of 3 or 4 yards consistently then you have alot of 3rd and shorts and if you complete 65% of your passes your probably a 60-70% third down conversion team which keeps the ball moving and scores points. Obviously get Johnson in on third down as your change up and to catch it out of the backfield, but I’ve heard him compared to Barry Sanders many times. I don’t have any research to back this up, but my memories of Barry never really included winning many games… If you stop Johnson short or for a loss once or twice your putting VY in third and longs and that doesn’t sound like a recipe for success.

Not a good game at all Titans fans
but thanks for all the conversation leading up to the game this week.
I had Chris Johnson on a fantasy team, and the rest of my roster pretty much crapped the bed. So his huge performance not only pissed me off, it REALLY pissed me off.
