Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

As Promised. Part 2: What Has Gone Wrong?

I Think it’s suffice to say that more has gone wrong then right for the 49ers this season,  hence the 3-4 record.  But some of what has gone wrong is self inflicted while others are pure luck or great opponent play.

Offensive Line:  Issues with this unit began before the season even started before when Marvel Smith surprisingly retired due to injury.  Days later the 49ers signed Tony Pashos which was a heads up move by this organization and possibly even a better signing then the aforementioned,  or course until he was lost for the season.  Do you all remember the offensive line play in the pre-season?  By this I am talking about the 1st string and nothing after that.  They opened up holes and even protected the QB well.  What the “expletive” happened?  Months after looking like an up and coming linemen Chilo Rachal has taken a dramatic step back regressing in a major way.  I am not sure if David Baas is completely healthy because in the past he has been a pretty good offensive linemen,  not great just solid.  But this season he has also taken a step back which is surprising in a contract year.  Adam Snyder has not stepped up in any way to take a hold of a certain position,  I had major hopes for him stepping up this season but now that has of course faded.  I cannot say anyone on the offensive line is playing at an all-pro level simply because how bad they have played as a unit but both Eric Heitman and Joe Staley have been real solid game in and game out.  Now that we have found two solid offensive linemen it just so happens one of them,  Joe Staley,  will be out at least 6 weeks.  Just can’t get any worse right?  Wrong!!!!  Barry Sims has been penciled in as a replacement for Staley and that is an outright scary proposition for me,  though he did play good last week.  One positive though.  Can it get any worse?

Offensive Play calling:  I gave Jimmy Raye a little bit of a break early on because our offense was being lead by a signal caller with physical limitations.  But since Alex Smith has taken over what is his excuse?  Many will point out that Smith dropped back 34 times against Indianapolis but that is not what I am talking about.  It is possible to throw more then run without actually opening up the offense.  The play calling since Smith has taken over has gotten better but needs much more improvement.  It is clear that the strengths of our skill position players are in a more spread like offense.  Smith,  Crabtree,  Morgan and Davis all have shown they can strive in this formation,  why not run an offense that plays to your players strengths?

Disappointing Players:  I have been more surprised by improved play from some of our unproven men. I am not going to list any offensive linemen in this point because it has been mentioned beforehand. But to some extent Glen CoffeeJosh MorganManny Lawson and Parys Haralson have all either taken a step back or not shown what we had expected. I thought Haralson was going to rack up double digit sacks this season.  What the heck has happened?  Where has he been in the pass rush?  This guy has not stepped up as the play making OLB I thought. Manny Lawson just isn’t a pass rushing linebacker,  he is a good  player, a real good player.  But it’s obvious he isn’t playing in the right position and/or scheme.  Either move him inside or trade him to a team that can better use his skill set.  Josh Morgan began the pre-season as the #1 receiver and since has been demoted to the slot a #3,  possibly soon to move back up to #2,  but at no response to his play.  I am not sure if he is anything more then a #3 receiver in the NFL,  I really hope I am wrong considering it appears we do have a #1. I understand he is a rookie but Glen Coffee really upset me with his play in place of Frank Gore.  Besides not being able to block and pick up the blitzes he looked lost in terms of finding the holes and busting through them,  I saw multiple times where he hesitated when the offensive line opened up a lane you could drive a bus through,  this hesitation caused the defense to recover and stop him for a minimal gain.  I will give him some time because it isn’t easy reading the defense less then a year removed from college.

Tough Luck Losses: How many of us actually thought the 49ers would go into Indianapolis and Minnesota and come out losing by a combined 7 points? These two teams are a        combined 31-3 in there last 34 regular season game,  that’s right 31-3. I am not making that up go check it out.  We went into there home domes and led most of the time yet to lose the game in 4th quarter. We got Favred in the first game and blew it with boneheaded plays in the 2nd game.  The measurables in the NFL are to win games, there are absolutely not moral victories.  It is the little things that cost us those two games. In Minnesota it was the Clements dropped INT deep in the Vikings end,  losing Frank Gore on the 3rd play of the game,  The BS penalty calls that led to a Vikings field goal,  kick coverage breakdown on Harvin’s return,  closing up the offense with the lead near the end,  not playing a 2 man under on the game winning TD pass.  At Indianapolis it was the Crabtree fumble,  Smith overthow,  defensive lapse on 3rd and 20, Spencer biting on a trick play,  delay of game followed by a sack that took us out of field goal range and inability to get off the field on 3rd down.  In the grand scheme of things 6 plays out of 120 or so in a game doesn’t seem like much but when playing a team that is far superior to you the margin for error is much less.  I guarantee we had more offensive and defensive breakdowns in the Rams games then these two combined but it’s who your playing the highlights your mistakes.

I was going to add a 5th slot to this thread which would have been not being able to end games.  But I think that goes into the tough luck loss category and my explanation regarding that.  Plus this thread was getting incredibly long.  On the positive side if the 49ers can sure up just a couple thing I see no reason why we cannot win 7 or 8 of our final 9 games and win the west.

Shaun Hill, Running Game, 3rd down efficiency..

Are 3 that haven’t fared well from the beginning of the season. Clock and game management are still a bit shaky as well. As far as the o-line, it’s been a problem for a few years now, and suffice to say, it wasn’t just Hostler and Martz that inflated the sack totals. It’s the line itself, the coaching, and possibly the carousel at QB.

Sure certain players have been a bit of a disappointment, but that could be that we put more stock into them without considering circumstances that have hindered them, or just plain overrating them.

The only tough luck loss I see was in MIN. But the 49ers made a mistake (that’s on the HC) by giving a HOF QB one more shot at winning the game, rather than getting just one more 1st down. IND won the game because they got the crucial 1st downs to kill the clock by throwing short passes. The 49ers didn’t want to do that against MIN.

Well, we're waiting....

what about Parys Haralson?

The dude has been invisible for most of the first 7 games. 15 tackles? 1 Sack? Seriously? Looks like ‘gone wrong’ to me…

I Have Him On The List

And yes he has been a major disappointment.

I haven’t been paying attention but it could be teams are rolling an extra blocker towards Haralson’s direction. I think Manny has slightly improved each game. He seems to get a pressure or two each game, just no sacks.

Anyone Notice

the combined 31-3 records for Minnesota and Indianapolis dating back to last season?

Offensive line limitations have a profound effect on play calling

Let’s think about what Sing and Raye are trying to do. Basically they are trying to get Alex Smith, the only potential franchise QB on their roster, back into the flow of the offense.
And they are doing that with an oline that is so beat up and incoherent, it is scary. People want them to open up the offense and, in theory, that is a good idea. But lack of protection makes it very difficult and dangerous.

They cannot call pump-and-go deep routes; they cannot call slowly developing play-action plays. Basically they are left with run plays, quick outs and quick slants. Anything else is to dangerous to use, except very rarely: too much risk of finding the wrong color jerseys in the backfield while the play is developing. Too much risk of injury.

It is if you are playing touch football and one team’s designated pass rusher counts to 2 thousand while the other teams designated pass rusher counts to 4 thousand. The team that has to run an offense against the short 2 thousand count is not going to look very creative. That’s us.

Until we get Staley back, possibly a high draft pick (OT) and integrate a cohesive offensive line unit, we are very, very limited, and not by Raye’s imagination.

We have great skills players though and if Alex Smith can play to his potential that saves us a future “1” and would get the offense on track quickly. Davis: is great. Crabtree: will be great. With a cohesive offensive line our team will be feared, and the defense will look even better. Next year, look out.

+1

That’s kinda what Sing said in his press conference and on KNBR. Can’t throw Smith to the wolves, which is exactly what it will be with our o-line. We need to give it a little time to develop. Let Smith get more comfortable and gain more confidence be you unleash the whole play book. Our o-line will benefit more from it and our running game will benefit more from it.

I know we are getting to that point where any close game lost could potentially kill our playoff hopes but we have to be patient. I trust that our coaches are doing what they say they are. Putting us in the best possible chance to win.

Josh Morgan

I don’t think is a disappointment at all… is DVOA is 23%, good for 12th in the NFL. He hasn’t been thrown to that often, but has been quite good. 28 throw-tos for 268 yards. Better than Ochocinco or Randy Moss (albeit in fewer attempts).

By comparison “All Pro” Vernon Davis has a DVOA of 13.5% (19th in the league… and there are fewer TEs than WRs), but has been thrown to much more (55 times for 375 yards)

his low targets

are the probably the reason for the high numbers. he’s averaging 4 passes thrown his direction a game. this is a third or fourth option contribution. If smith targeted him as much as he looked at crabs or vernon, those numbers might take a dive. still, the hating on this guy has been over the top. he catches the ball when it comes his way.

wanna hear a funny joke? the Buccaneers picked Gaines Adams over Patrick Willis

hard to say

without saying how many snaps he has taken… but I think at this point, Issac Bruce has to be the #3 or #4.
Part of it might be not the OC or QBs choice to throw to him, but that he’s not getting open…. all we can say is that he has done well with the chances he has gotten.

I voted other

The problem with the offense is the offensive line as we all know the game starts and ends with them. Plus to add salt to the wound we are in our 7th season with as many cordinators (or is it 6?) That’s why we don’t have continuity, and Crabtree waiting unitl week 5 to join doesn’t help, especially with him being our go to guy out the gates. Morgan’s struggles aren’t really on him, remember most of the season Hill was his QB. After the penalty against the Colts, expect more production.

Defense has played well but has struggled to get off of the field, spotty pass rush, no ball-hawking anytthing (CB or S) plus with the offense leading in 3 and outs they tire in the last quarter of the game. We need mroe first downs and we need to find a way to run. Passing more is not our best option.

I think the most disappointing aspect of this season

is the way they have mishandled the special teams. They cut Rossum, but place Battle there who has ball security issues to put it politely. Then they replace him with their highest salaried corner back who immediately gets hurt. I like Brandon Jones as both a WR and return man. This guy is talented. However, his catching the ball at the 3 was a bonehead move.

Kickoff returns? They replaced Rossum with Delanie who immediately fumbled as he is wont to do. Then they finally make the smart move and use Michael Robinson who is a tough straight ahead return man with great hands. His reliability and toughness make him a solid kickoff return man. The only problem is he doesn’t have Michael Robinson to block for him and Coffee can’t block. The upback is very important on special teams and Robinson is proving it by not being the upback. They need to get someone else in front of him and we’ll have a reliable returner who gives us good field position.

You Know Everyone Is All On Spurlock

And was when he was on the team. But i am here to say it isn’t his fault. The 49ers failed to utilize him in anyway except the BS wildcat formation. Why wasn’t he returning kicks when Rossum was released? I was arguing that long before his release. It’s not the fact that the 49ers let Rossum go, it’s what they did afterward that baffles me. Was it not common sense for Spurlock to return kicks after that? I mean seriously. So all of you that were hitting on Spurlock may want to take a step back and recognize it was the coaching that failed and not him.
