This Was a Good Game.
The reason I say this is because it gives Singletary a feel for which of the 53 guys are the best and who belongs on the field and how to approach games if he wants to win them.
I ONLY WISH THIS GAME OCCURRED THREE GAMES AGO!!!
This is a summary of what I saw:
1) Alex Smith was given a chance to own the offense. The first drive (which lead to a field goal) included no run plays whatsoever. I noticed that there were some posts immediately after the game (fans crying), about Alex Smith's failures and about possibly bringing forth a QB rotation (which one would have to be absolutely stupid to do).
2) Gore's officially back. He had a great game receiving-wise and rushing-wise.
3) Raye called a great game (His best since taking over as OC). Yes, I am a critic of his, but he impressed me today (sans the first play of the game...ugh). He called plays that actually worked and called them at the right times. I believe he has potential to become our OC of the future if he continues to call games like these. Unlike the last few games, Raye put the Forty Niners in position to win. Alex Smith lost it, but he's still developing (sadly). It's only his third game this season, the first of which he began at halftime. Be lenient with him. Don't expect perfection because you won't get it with Alex. Raye's his fifth OC in as many years. Continuity is extremely important for the QB position (look at Peyton Manning; he's had Tom Moore since 1998). Next year, Alex Smith will be even better. Jimmy did another thing, which I like. He allowed Jason Hill to play and it paid dividends. He led all Forty Niners WRs (WRs, not RBs and TEs) with four receptions for 50 yards and two TDs. He's a big part of the future at the WR position and Raye is giving him recognition. I noticed he was put in for Isaac Bruce, who received a reduced amount of playing time (YES!!!).
4) What's up with Brandon Jones either catching bad balls, not calling fair catch, and dancing in place instead of returning?
5) Roman is terrible as usual.
6) The Forty Niners have tackling issues.
7) Goldson has little range. We desperately need a fast safety to help out the secondary. The CBs are very solid and can be great with some safety help.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Good post and I agree 100% with you. I think we are about to turn the corner into becoming a good team.

i'd agree to an extent.
I’ve said the same sentence the last 3 weeks. This game against the Titans shouldn’t have been a close loss that at the end of the day we could say, we played good and lost to a good team. We were able to say it after MINN, IND, and HOU, but we cant say that about Tennessee. At the end of the day, this was a game we all had marked up as a W on our schedules. Do I still think we are on our way in the right direction? Yes, But i think this game wasn’t a good way to show it.

Two things that jumped out at me
1. We are TERRIBLE on 3rd down on both sides of the ball. The only reason the Titans didn’t convert more is because Vince Young totally missed Justin Gage a few times, or they’d have been able to keep the ball moving.
2. This game is exactly what we were worried about with Smith. He turned the ball over 4 times and fumbled another time (thanks to Gore, this was only a loss of 20 yards instead of a turnover). The 4 turnovers resulted in 24 of the Titans’ points due to short fields and a touchdown return. As evidenced by the last two weeks, when he doesn’t turn the ball over, we can stay competitive with good/great teams. When he puts our D in tough positions, we’re going to lose games.

Said it…
To the main post tho, Brandon Jones has no business returning punts, no business. Makes you wonder exactly why Allen Russom was cut as opposed to someone else to make room for Crabtree, because after that we’ve tried multiple guys as returners and all its gotten us has been Arnaz Battle fumbling in Houston, Clements breaking his shoulder in Indy and now Brandon Jones doing absolutely nothing. Mcloughan and Sing certainly have botched this one.

let's let Bruce retire as a PR!
ok, he’d probably suck AND get hurt and he doesn’t deserve that.
Who in the world can be a PR for us?!?!

By the way, that was Mike Singletary answering the question. Probably should have said that first.

takes
Goldson: not rangy, but a big hitter. Perhaps better off at SS? I saw him put the hurt on several dudes in this game.
Lawson/Haralson: It’s now or never. Very little sack production this year, poor tackling, letting guys break contain on the edge?!?! I’m about to say we draft an OLB and an O-Line man rather than Safety and OLine. You both are on the bubble.
Alex Smith: Is it easier for him to fix his turnovers than for Shaun Hill to magically conjure up some tangible skill in throwing? I’d like to think so. This was a bit too extreme. Sadly, Singletary said it himself, “Is Alex ready for that?” when he said he didn’t think they’d just go spread. I think they were trying to keep defense guessing in preparation for this week, that’s why they said we wouldn’t go spread. In the end though, he was right. 51 pass attempts…Alex wasn’t ready for that yet.
Jason Hill: He should start. How fast is he? Deep threat?
Morgan, if you want to play, you better start reaching out and attacking balls. You were supposed to be the best WR we had before Crabtree was signed. Play like it or sit. You are on the bubble.
Brandon Jones: Never return a punt, ever, again. Get on the field and show Morgan how wide receiver is played. Niners, get some ROI on Jones and put him on the field on offense. Brandon, you are on the bubble.
Frank Gore: Is the best athlete we have on Offense, closely edging out Vernon Davis. When Gore get’s the ball you can just see his talent. He is a football player. He blocks, he jukes, he cuts, he hits the hole, he is a man.
Vernon Davis: You are the same as Frank Gore pretty much, just please remain calm when we need you to. Thanks for pulling guys out of the scrum yesterday and hell of a day catching the football.
Secondary: Did not play yesterday. We only had the D-Line and Patrick Willis on the field.
Patrick Willis: Clone him 3 times, then 4 more times but shrink these clones down a little. There is your LB and DB group. This guy makes me feel sorry for him that he’s surrounded by the rest of the guys, with exception of the D-Line.
Andy Lee: See “Patrick Willis” section, last sentence up to the comma.

I'm starting to get the feeling too
That Goldson would be better off as a SS. I think he hits harder than Michael Lewis.

Start the Goldson at SS & Clements at FS movement!

Reggie Smith
His groin’s been terrible since the start of the season. I’d like to see him out there as well from time to time (INSTEAD OF ROMAN!!!).

I was seriously considering that (having Goldson and Clements as the safeties).
Clements doesn’t have corner speed and gets beaten by #1 WRs. The one thing I don’t like about Goldson is his range, though. We need a fast safety to support the CBs. Tarell and Shawntae are very solid at CB btw.

I think our future at WR is with Hill and Crabtree,
with Morgan in the slot? I’m just not sold on Morgan. He missed two balls yesterday; one was right in his hands, and the other he tipped upwards (eventually INTed) while being closely guarded by a defender (Morgan’s inability to get separation). Hill has intangibles that I find amazing. He keeps plays alive, has speed, and has a knack for not only getting open, but also evading tackles for YAC. I was sold on this guy last year and was looking forward to him having a good year this year, but injuries slowed him down. Hopefully we see more of him and less of Bruce down the road. Cheers!

I can cut Morgan a bit of slack
He was drafted last year so hasn’t got a lot of experience. What I like about him is that he does a great job with yards after the catch. Last year he averaged 6 yards per carry after the catch, and this year it’s about the same.
That’s a good stat to have.
by smileyman on Nov 9, 2009 5:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He needs to focus and be more mature. That's the way I see it.
Also, don’t say he hasn’t had enough experience if you’re talking about Jason Hill. Yes, Hill was drafted a year earlier, but Morgan and Hill are the same age. Also, Hill never hit the field his first year. And when Morgan was drafted, the Forty Niners did whatever they could to get him on the field and gave him all the chances in the world. Hill had to prove himself for this year while Morgan was already listed as a starter. Hill’s gone through some bad breaks and I’m glad he’s being noticed (again). Morgan had 20 catches last year and was injured for most of the year, while Hill had 30 and played well after being used the second half of the season. If I were to base their skills solely on those stats, I’d tell you Hill is better. But the team evaluated them largely on practice play, which Morgan may have been better at (because they liked him more, although that may change). I like both receivers, but I just think Morgan needs to focus more and not make little mistakes. His hands are not “sure hands” like Hill’s and the way he runs his routes isn’t also (as well as his speed). At this point, I’m very excited for Hill, but I want Morgan to develop into a more
matureplayer.

Oh I agree
Morgan isn’t a great receiver yet. He could develop into something really good though. I envision him as a 3rd receiver type of guy. I also really liked what I saw from Hill on Sunday. Here’s hoping he gets some more thrown his way.
by smileyman on Nov 9, 2009 5:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yup.
There’s no reason to see any other receiver besides those three (well, maybe B. Jones). Bruce and Battle have contracts that expire after the season and meanwhile can only provide minimal support. Let the young guns prosper!
P.S. The sad part is that it would have taken the Forty Niners so much longer to rediscover Hill if Bruce hadn’t been benched with a sore ankle. I’m not one who wishes for injuries, but…

My take on Lawson and Haralson is that they should trade them to somebody ...
that plays a 4-3 next year. Or replace most of the DEs on the roster, and run a 4-3, I guess. The entire DB corps appears to consist of guys who should be converted to SS. How did that happen? Has Morgan been tried in the return game? I forget. He certainly hasn’t been anything special at WR.

We have a really banged up secondary
That’s a huge part of the problem. We should definitely address that in FA or the draft though

DBs look average when there is no pass rush
That’s on any team.
