Golden Nuggets: At least it's a short week, right?

After another brutal loss, the 49ers have a short week to turn around and get ready for the also struggling Chicago Bears.  On the one hand that's a bad thing because the 49ers are rather banged up coming off the loss to Tennessee.  On the other hand, one would like to hope a short week will allow them to quickly forget yesterday's ugliness.  In the end what do I know though, right?

It's not too difficult to surmise what most of today's links are about.  However, I would like to point to the third link for the San Jose Mercury News.  A couple weeks ago Vernon Davis and some other players visited with a 13-year old in Houston prior to the Texans game.  Unfortunately, the young man passed away this past Friday.  Obviously it puts football in perspective.  Vernon Davis issued a statement:

"I can’t begin to explain what meeting Joseph meant to me," Davis said in a statement released by the 49ers. "He was a great kid with an amazing spirit. I am still wearing the bracelet he gave me.

"I really want him to know that the short time we spent together meant as much to me as I’m sure it did to him. I am truly sorry to see him go so early in his life, but I know that he is in a better place. My thoughts and prayers go out to Joseph and his family."

Coffee doubtful for Chicago

with a concussion.

Who backs up Gore? Sheets? (That was snark.)

Is Michael Robinson the slowest kickoff returner in the game?

Does Brandon Jones know how to return punts?

Who made the decisions not to protect Sheets and to cut Rossum? Singletary or McCloughan?

I guess this isn’t the place to complain about the Golden State Warriors….

To be fair on Robinson

He might not a break a kickoff for a TD but he is consistently getting to the 30 yard line on returns.

Now we know

why the Niners offered big bucks to Warner in the off-season. Even with the constant insertion of God references in postgame shows, you can see how Warner would have elevated the Niners’ offensive play.

As for what the Niners need to do, they need to see if yesterday’s game is how Smith is going to play or just a reversion to bad habits. Two of the interceptions were at the end of the game. When the other team doesn’t have to worry about the run, they can focus on passing and they get more interceptions. The fumble was partly on Snyder (I think). Smith has been late at throwing and staring down receivers, but his play is not as bad as those who want to revel in catastrophe want it to be.

Let’s see what happens the rest of the year. Nate Davis is not going to rescue this season. If Smith totally burns out and the team really collapses then maybe put Davis in for a game or two to see what he can do at the end of the year.

One other thing that we know is that although there are still too many sacks the offensive line is playing a lot better with Smith at quarterback. Is it because of Hill moving slowly in the pocket or because his limited skill set limits the passing game so much that defenses can cheat to put pressure on him?

Anyway, it’s not the end of the world. Thursday may be, but I’m preparing for it by removing sharp objects I might start jabbing myself with from near the TV.

Ike Bruce...

While watching the game, I muttered that Bruce had just gone into retirement the moment he went down and apparently pulled up his sock. I got a couple of laughs and one friend who was pissed off because of what a valuable piece he is (well, was).

Let’s be honest, Isaac Bruce has been a shell of himself this season and has been a detriment to the team. While he’s dropping catchable balls every game, he is stunting the growth thru lack of playing time for the likes of Jason Hill.

Which brings me to my second point. I’m admittedly a big fan of Jason Hill. He’s a native San Franciscan and I thought he was making great strides in the second half of last year and he deserved more field time the first half of this year. But when you are down by 2 TDs at the tail end of the 4th quarter, you do not celebrate when catching a TD, I don’t care who you are. I hope sing got into his grill after the game.
