Shaun Hill never got any respect !!

The stores never even sold his jersey !! That sucks !!

Star-divide

Shaun Hill broke the all time NFL record for most completions in his first starting game, and he won most of his games with a crappy offensive line. Alex Smith fumbled the ball, threw tons of interceptions, and made tons of bad decisions, and you still pull for the over rated college star who had one of the best offensive lines in college to relax behind. Shaun Hill knows the game speed, and makes cat like instinctual plays. He is smart, where Alex Smith has physical skills but lacks mental skills. In the end, mental skills always win. The stores never even sold a Shaun Hill jersey, that sucks !!! Then we get rid of Rossum, the best return man ever. And let go the best replacement man for Gore available in Kory Sheets.  Kory Sheets could burn anyone, just like Chris Johnson did to the Niners on Sunday. And we passed up on Aaron Rodgers and picked the king of interceptions ( Alex Smith ).... Aaron Rodgers threw 19 straight completions in college against the toughest defense of USC. Aaron Rodgers is accurate, Alex Smith couldn't hit the broad side of a Barn with a shotgun from 10 yards away.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

And the offensive coordinator always put Shaun Hill in the wrong situations !!

I was blown away at the play calling we were doing !! Run Run Run !! even when it doesnt work !! come on !! Shaun Hill should have been playing in the shotgun formation, just like the super accurate Dan Marino did. Every time Shaun Hill was in the shotgun, he made something happen, then the next play they would put him right up on the line and he would be pressured way to fast because of our weak offensive line, and he would be running for his life or forced to make mistakes.

On the same day that

Alex Smith threw three interceptions and lost to Tennessee,
Aaron Rogers threw three interceptions and lost to Tampa Bay.

I am not arguing for Alex Smith nor against Aaron Rogers, just stating that anyone can throw three ints. and loose.

Just watch

all you have to do is watch the games….Hill was horrible and couldnt make a downfield throw if his life depended on it. Also his feet are made of concrete so he gets sacked way too easy! There are pros and cons to each QB but the QB who gives us a better shot to win? Smith all the way. Not even a question.

by Quin on Nov 10, 2009 7:04 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Its not about physical skills, its about making great decisions and knowing how to win !!

There has been thousands of quarterbacks who can throw the ball a mile, but can they throw it where it belongs, in the hands of the reciever that is in the best position for a first down or a touchdown. Alex Smith just throws it because he is overwhelmed. mHe doesnt see the whole picture fast enough. Shaun Hill has cat like instincts, and knows where to throw the ball immmediately. That is why he wins games, and Alex Smiths loses games,,,,, bad mistakes, over and over, and over and over again,WAKE UP NINERS !!!

Stop Listening to Pundits

Several points. Last year Hill threw 35 or 40 yards in air to Josh Morgan for a come from behind win the Rams game. Hill has hit Vernon Davis downfield numerous times. Speed afoot? Hill went to Kansas state high school track meet as a sprinter. Please compare Hill’s scrambles for first down with Smith’s. Hill is faster. And then you have the temerity to conclude with “who gives us a better shot to win?” Let’s see. Smith is 0-7 in his most recent starts. Hill is 10 & 5 (and should be 12 and 3 if we recognize his end of game drives in Arizona last year and in Minnesota this year). And you ask “better chance to win?”
Is it Hill’s body or his throwing motion you don’t like?

by Aristophanes on Nov 10, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Saying Smith is 0-7 is like saying Hill is 0-2

Since the only reasonable way to get to 0-7 with Smith is to count backwards until you reach his last win.

Wins are a terrible stat for QBs, just god-awful. I think the best example of how using wins to evaluate a QB is moronic is John Elway. The guy was really really good, but couldn’t “win the big one.” He was a loser and a choker. And then, as he gets older, and becomes, fundamentally, an average QB because his skills decline, all of a sudden he finds himself on a great team and wins a super bowl. ANd now he’s a “winner.”

Nonsense.

And it’s nonsense to talk about Hill beating St. Louis in the same breath as Smith losing to Indianapolis. Hill was terrible in beating St. L. Smith was halfway decent in losing to Indy. ANd yet for those of you who can’t see past Ws and Ls, Hill performed better.

It’s moronic.

by Ronaldinho on Nov 10, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

It's not moronic

Different teams use their QB and offenses in different ways so judging performance by statistical metrics might still be deceiving. W/L losses does reflect some success in executing the team’s/offensive game plan. The only thing more moronic than just using W/L to evaluate a QB is toss the entire concept out the window and not factor into the evaluation.

QB’s and coaches lose their jobs over W/L, not QB passer rating, not yard per attempt, not TD/INT ratio . . . wins and losses fires and hires you better understand it’s important.

by bignerd on Nov 11, 2009 12:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

In the long run, Ws/Ls matter ...

But in the short run, focusing on them is a sure sign that somebody is ignorant about winning football.

I mean, let’s compare the Indy and St. Louis games again. Both QBs directed offenses that put up 14 points. Shaun Hill did so against one of the worst defenses in the league, and won. Alex Smith did so against a top defense, and lost. Who played a better game?

Alex Smith. No question.

Heck, I’m not sure Ws and Ls are ever fair to judge a QB by. I mean, QB has a great game, but his RB fumbles on a key drive, and his defense can’t stop the opposition, that’s somehow his fault? Coaches, that’s a different story. In the short run, process matters more than results, but in the long run, that’s what a coach is paid to do: get the team to win.

But a QB is only on the field for half the game. Even if he does his job perfectly, the team can still lose. People never call a cornerback or a safety a loser, although those guys can lose you a game just as easily as a QB can, but a QB?

by Ronaldinho on Nov 11, 2009 12:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree

A perfect example of this is Cutler in Denver. He would put up great stats but when his defense gave up 35 points a game it is tough to win. I think I remember reading a stat last year that he had only 1 loss when his defense gave up 21 or less points. That stat is probably wrong now since it only reflected his time in Denver.

I want me some Buster

by gbears16 on Nov 11, 2009 12:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think most teams would win if the defense only gave up 21 points.

by bignerd on Nov 11, 2009 12:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not true.

The average points per team in most years is somewhere between 20 and 22 points. In 2008 it was 21.7, which was on the high side.

That means that most teams would go about .500 is their defense gave up 21 points. 21 points is average.

And in Cutlers two years as a full-time starter in Denver, he never played on a team with a defense ranked higher than 28th in the league.

by Ronaldinho on Nov 11, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Most games are decided by a touchdown or less. Most games end with a QB with the ball in his hands. The majority of games in the NFL are competitive that’s why QB play, especially in crunch time is the difference between winning and losing. Why Joe Montana is revered and Tony Romo is smeared. Why QBs are ultimately judged by W/L before anything else.

Alex Smith, despite all the different stat lines and other game occurrences has had the opportunity to win all three games late in the 4th Qtr and has not put together that winning drive.

by bignerd on Nov 11, 2009 12:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But Tony Romo is 27-12 as a starter in the NFL. That’s not bad shakes right there. Far better than Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, John Elway, Dan Marino…

Come on. W/L has a very limited value, and we all know it. Well, not all of us, but certainly you and me both.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

by howtheyscored on Nov 11, 2009 1:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll take limited value over the thought of no value in regards to judging by W/L.

by bignerd on Nov 11, 2009 2:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And yet, why were they in that position to begin with?

His first game back shows the fallacy of that form of analysis. By your logic, you would judge him LESS harshly if he had NOT played the team back into contention.

4th-quarter comebacks are an overrated stat for QBs. John Elway had so many because his teams were often behind. Why were they often behind? Because he didn’t get the job done early in the game! (ALthough that was at least partly Dan Reeves fault for handcuffing him). Steve Young had very few fourth-quarter comebacks. Why? Because the 49ers demolished opponents in the first half and were almost never behind.

Alex Smith has directed game-winning drives in the past, so the notion that this is something he somehow can’t do seems absurd.

Yeah, screw Alex Smith! You and I can band together and root for the colossal failure of the 49ers franchise until Hill is restored to his rightful spot, granted by God and acknowledged by man, as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers! Heir to the throne of such legends and equals of Shaun Hill as Joe Montana and Steve Young! And together, we shall root for Frank Gore’s foot to fall off, so that those in charge of the 49ers know… KNOW! So they know just how stupid they are to have let go of Kory Sheets!

What say you, faithful brother of all things Hill and Sheets?

Oh, also you’re not going to be able to buy that Hill jersey. Because that’s money that might line the pockets of those in charge of the 49ers, and buying any memorabilia sends the wrong message. Your best bet, I think, will be to buy a plain white t-shirt and a Sharpie, and write HILL 13 on the back.

Shaun Hill can win if he is given the right play calling, instead of 1st down run, 2nd down run, then ok, that aint working, lets try a pass now, with 10 yards to go every time. That doesnt work, they should have allowed Shaun Hill to pass on first down more often, he is super accurate and will make more great plays than bad ones, like Alex Smith…

Couldn’t agree more! Shaun’s completion percentage would be at like 90% if the receivers were good enough to catch his passes! Alex Smith? His percentage would be closer to 20% if his receivers weren’t so good that they could catch all his dead duck passes! And that stupid running game… It’s Frank Gore’s fault! Kory Sheets would have turned every corner and shrugged off every tackle!

And don’t get me started on Aaron Rodgers… If the Niners drafted him, like 100% of America and 300% of the world knew they should have, the Niners would have won the Super Bowl already! Amirite or amirite???

I’d say we should get together with the rest of our Alex Smith-hatin’ brethren and root against the 49ers, but watching even a televised game is giving credence to the front office and the NFL. So no-can-do there, either. Instead, I think our surest course of action is posting rants like this winner of a post you’ve created on a daily basis on Niners Nation, and every other Niners fansite. THAT will show ’em!

In fact, SCREW the 49ers! Which team was it that signed Sheets to be their 3rd string back? That’s my new favorite team!

Alex Smith creates almost one yard per average pass attempt over Shaun Hill’s average, and is exactly equal to Carson Palmer and Kyle Orton’s YPA this year. The significant difference between these two playmakers and Alex Smith (other than their winning records) is that they are both allowed to line up in a shotgun formation for the majority of their snaps.

by Chimneyfish on Nov 10, 2009 2:42 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Remember this guy? Please note the type of formation he is always lined up in there. Also consider what formation has given him the most success in the NFL.

And never deserved it

I have tried to be a believer in both Hill and Smith. The truth is they would be adequate back-ups at best. They each have moments of brilliance, but can’t pull through week to week. Not sure there is a right answer for the remainder of this season…

by simiski on Nov 10, 2009 7:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

So, allow me to follow the stream of consciousness here.

Shaun Hill —> Alex Smith (Okay, I’m still following) —> Shaun Hill is instinctive like a cat (wrong, btw, he’s swanlike) —> Alex Smith doesn’t play the mental game (I’d like to point out here that instincts aren’t mental) —> Released Allen Rossum (non sequitur much? Also… best return man ever? Exaggerate much?) —> RELEASED KORY SHEETS (Hi, Kory Sheets / Kory Sheets’ Mom – You just knew this would be about Kory Sheets, didn’t you?) —> Didn’t draft Aaron Rodgers (Whoa, slow down there roadrunner… I’ve lost all sense of linear time) —> wait… that’s it? You could have gone, like, three more non sequiturs and four more Kory Sheets is like Chris Johnson drops – but I guess you’re probably saving that for another post.

Hill got respect

which is why he was our starting QB for 6 games this season. He lost his job due to being ineffective. He also was not able to make enough downfield throws, therefore the OC was compelled to call run after run after run. With Smith they have been able to diversify the offense. Of course, the more you throw, the more likely you are to turn the ball over. Smith needs to develop more, but he is clearly a superior QB to Hill.

Oooooh, that’s a no-no! Unless he was there specifically to boo Alex Smith and Frank Gore, and root for the 49ers to lose. To do anything else would be sending the wrong message. The correct message, of course, being that the Niners needed to draft Rodgers, play Hill, keep Sheets, sign Larry Johnson, keep Allen Rossum, and evict Jed York. And to let the team know that running backs don’t need to block. Ummm, is there anything else I’m missing from his… Oh right, AND that they need to do a better job of play calling for Shaun Hill, because that’s what held him back.

Nick Naylor: Well, if it’s your job to be right, then you’re never wrong.

Joey Naylor: No, chocolate is.
Nick Naylor: Exactly, but you can’t win that argument… so, I’ll ask you: so you think chocolate is the end all and the be all of ice-cream, do you?
Joey Naylor: It’s the best ice-cream, I wouldn’t order any other.
Nick Naylor: Oh! So it’s all chocolate for you is it?
Joey Naylor: Yes, chocolate is all I need.
Nick Naylor: Well, I need more than chocolate, and for that matter I need more than vanilla. I believe that we need freedom. And choice when it comes to our ice-cream, and that Joey Naylor, that is the defintion of liberty.
Joey Naylor: But that’s not what we’re talking about.
Nick Naylor: Ah! But that’s what I’m talking about.
Joey Naylor: …but you didn’t prove that vanilla was the best…
Nick Naylor: I didn’t have to. I proved that you’re wrong, and if you’re wrong I’m right.
Joey Naylor: But you still didn’t convince me
Nick Naylor: It’s that I’m not after you. I’m after them.
[points into the crowd]

People point to any failures of one quarterback or the other as proof that the guy they want to be the starter is the best ever. But even if Alex Smith proves himself to be a bust, that doesn’t make Shaun Hill a great quarterback. Shaun Hill will be the same guy he now, independent of Smith’s results. Thank you.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Alex Smith Lost to the Titans

I mostly agree w/ this post. Hill delivered the Ws. Alex loses games. It is that simple. The Titans game is a perfect example: The 49ers played a great game and Alex Smith single handedly lost it for them.

It’s not that simple.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Indeed, it’s never so simple.

Smith gives the 49ers the best chance at winning

That’s what it boils down too. Shaun Hill doesn’t have the ability to escape like Smith does. The touchdown pass to Jason Hill on what looked like a broken play would have never happened with Shaun Hill.

Hill had his moments where he made quick decision and got the ball to the receivers he needed too. Yet, this year he hasn’t come close to playing like he did when he took over the starting job from J.T. O’Sullivan.

Also, with Smith he is able to spread the defense out a little bit more which gives the receivers a better opportunity to get open.
