Ask Revenge Of The Birds: Game 2
Hey Niner fans, Andrew here from Revenge Of The Birds here to talk a little Cardinal-football. Just to start, yes, the opening game of the season hurt. But, that was a different Cardinals team that hadn't started the season very good, especially at home. After the bye week the Cardinals have been 7-2, and they are currently 5-1 on the road, where they are a considerably better. I look forward to having a good game on Monday night, and as always, use this thread to ask any questions you have and me and others from RotB will be here to answer your questions.

With Warner going the way of the Youngs and Aikmans of the quarterbacking world...
And with a brief glimpse of Matt Leinart in regular season action, how are you (and the fanbase) feeling about the quarterback position in a long-term sense?
I’d almost be optimistic if I were you. Leinart didn’t play like a complete scrub, and he wouldn’t be the first guy we’ve seen find some level of success after actually getting a chance to sit for a couple years (ahem, Rodgers, Young, Smith… even Brady, Romo, Rivers to a different extent…).
On the other hand, I didn’t actually see that game, and it was alarming that Leinart nearly fell to third on your depth chart this season.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
I don't think Leinart was ever close to falling to 3rd.
Brian St. Pierre had a horrible pre season and we was simply given the chance to compete for the 2nd string spot. I and other Cardinal fans are very optimistic after seeing Leinart play a whole game. The offense only scored 10 points but I think a lot of that falls on Leinart not getting any practice time all week. I think he’s ready to take over once Warner retires.
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

lol
I couldn’t resist.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Well health for one
Anquan was really forced to play with an injured hamstring. Steve Breaston, the underrated player on offense didn’t even play. More important was Warner, who was hobbling around on a sore hip. All three are healthy now.
The playcalling wasn’t right as well. There was certainly an adjustment period and it took a few games but the Cardinals are really flowing now on offense. They’re also running a lot more.
Finally, this team is a lot better on the road. Losing to the 49ers wasn’t the only home loss where the Cardinals stunk, and this team plays with a lot more intensity on the road for some reason. I’m not discrediting the 49ers victory week 1, but I think a lot of 49er fans are underestimating the Cardinals because of that and they really have no idea what team the Niners will be facing on Monday night.

Isn't the reverse also true?
The Niners didn’t exactly play a great game. The offense, in game one under a new coordinator, has since upgraded at QB and WR, to say nothing of a new philosophy. The AZ defense that day was excellent yet lost. The Niners defense, despite being on the field for the majority of the second half, won due to pass rush. If Haralson, Smith, Lawson and McDonald rush the QB (with the advantage of the home crowd) as they did in the opener, with the addtion of Brooks, the AZ passing game will again be somewhat stifled and turnovers will follow. I think AZ fans may again be underestimating the Niners, similar to the opener and the MNF game last season.
I think the bigger help to AZ in this game is not the addition of Breaston, but the subtraction of Clements.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
You could make an arguement, except
The Cardinals are 8-3 since that game while the 49ers are 4-7. So I’d still say the Cardinals are the more improved team.
The Cardinals were a less experienced team that didn’t know how to handle success last year and stunk up a lot of games later in the season.
Don’t get me wrong, this will be no cake-walk. But I think you’ll see a much better Cardinals team.

SpurredOn's point was
that actually, record reflecting or not, the Niners are a better team now than week 1.
Like I said over on your board…if you catch us not making some of the mental errors that have plagued us in our 6 games lost by a TD or less…I think you’ll find a fight on your hands.
The offense can put up points now, or at least has the potential to (when we hang onto the ball). The defense is better at rushing the passer and still averaging under 100 yards per game rushing allowed.
Sure we miss Nate Clements in the secondary but Spencer has played generally well and Bly hasn’t given up many big plays in his two starts.
It’s easy to say “winning is everything”. Look at the Titans before the light came on…they’re not that different of a team now just playing better and making less mistakes. A QB change also sparked their success…
I think the biggest difference is the timing between KW and the receivers is back.
KW has always been kind of a slow starter even back in the Rams days. When the timing is on, like it has been the last 4 games KW played, its almost impossible to stop.
Another difference is that the Cards have some faith in the running game as well. It’s still not stellar, but its atleast a consideration for the other team now.
By the way I love the KSWOF hijackings! Really funny stuff.

to be honest
I’d be surprised if the Cards have any measurable success in the run game on Monday night. It’s just been so rare that anyone does against the Niners. Most teams seem to completely abandon it by the second half.
Thought I'd ask this here instead of the other post
Do you think teams have shied away from DRC because of his ability, the poor/inconsistent play of the other CBs, or a combination of both? When one of our local bloggers review Niners game film, they often mention that teams shy away from Spencer, who’s known for excelent technique.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I would say a combination of both
But that’s not taking away what DRC can do. He’s capable of making a play on any pass but that’s what hurts him at the same time. If he would just focus on batting a ball away rather then picking it off, he’d be much better. I believe he is second in the league in passes defensed though. Teams have been able to pass a lot more successfully in the flats against Bryant McFadden so that has helped DRC as well.

Revenge of the Birds
DRC is fast too
He ran down Chris Johnson in the Tennessee game. I think beleif in his speed allows him to take more risks than he should maybe.
