Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

49ers-Eagles: Philadelphia opens as 9.5 point favorite

The line hasn't opened on every website out there, but for now Scores and Odds has the 49ers as 9 point underdogs to the Eagles, with an over/under of 43.5.  The line opened at 9.5, but has quickly dropped a half a point.  We'll see how much money comes in on the 49ers once the glow of Monday's win wears off.  The Eagles will likely be without Jeremy Maclin who has provided them of a bit of explosion.  Of course, when you've got Desean Jackson doing his thing in most every facet of the game, I suppose not having Maclin isn't exactly going to kill the Eagles.

Given that the 49ers were underdogs last week, it's no surprise they covered with the win, although they didn't really come close to the 44.5 point over/under.  The win against the spread improved the 49ers to 2-3-1 ATS versus Arizona over the last six games.

In the meantime, here are some gambling stats heading into this week, courtesy of Capper's Picks (ATS - against the spread; SU - straight up):

  • San Francisco is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Philadelphia
  • San Francisco is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games when playing Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia is 14-7 ATS in its last 21 games
  • Philadelphia is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games

Ok this has nothing to do with the spread....

but here is a funny quote from ESPN rankings about the Niners…."Bill Bidwill owns the Cardinals 363 days a year. The 49ers own them the other two days. (Sando) " Just too funny…..P.S. CBS sports has the SEAHAWKS ranked ahead of the Niners, what a joke of a ranking system they must have.

wow, that’s a pretty pathetic ranking… whatever though… When was the last time the niners won in philly? sorry i just can’t remember…

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

I can't remember either....

but you have to figure they are due :) Also, Philly is due for another poor performance (like they had against Oakland), they have been playing too well lately.

Yea, my friend from New York gave me a little bit of his insight… and it was ok… i mean, he believes the niners will win this weekend, our corners are too fast and physical… Willis has speed and physicality against the rush and pass, also the niners are getting to the QB

2003

Late December game when (gulp) Erickson was coach, we won in O.T. Our last true playoff capable team. At that time we actually had won a number in a row there and hadn’t lost in Philly since the 70’s. Of course in those days our Niners won everywhere.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 15, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

Actually...

San Francisco went 7-9 that season and it was the best record the 49ers had until 2008. So that wasn’t really a playoff caliber team. Of course the real disaster occurred in 2004 when both Garcia and Owens left the 49ers and Erickson attempted to really implement that offensive scheme of his and things really fell apart.

by sigma on Dec 15, 2009 9:36 PM PST up reply actions

Playoff caliber

Yes they went 7-9 and missed the playoffs by two games. They lost in O.T. at St. Louis and Arizona, in which their kicker missed FG that would’ve won the game. They also lost by two in Seattle in another game their kicker missed a FG. Kicking was the weakness of that team which was in the playoff hunt all season. When they were out of it in the finale they lost to Seattle which put the Seahawks in the playoffs.

The record may not show it but that team was playoff capable but had no FG kicker. They are the last genuine playoff caliber team we’ve had.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I was waiting for the line to come out.

9.5 point favorites! Calm down east coast, calm down!

Actually I like this! For some reason whenever everyone is convinced the Eagles are zOmg good they come out and lose to the Raiders, Browns or Bungles.

OK, DeSean Jackson isolated deep on Mark Roman is scary.

Yet, there a few things going for the 49ers in this game. The Eagles top pass rusher, Trent Cole, might be suspended for throwing a few punches at the end of the Giants game. Also watching SNF, Philly is a horrible tackling defense. The 49ers offense might put up a few extra scores off YAC alone. Finally, this is the time of year where Brian Dawkins used to take over . . . he’s gone, it could show.

by bignerd on Dec 15, 2009 8:00 PM PST reply actions

You really think he’ll get suspended? yea there were some punches thrown. Niners got some receivers that can put up some YAC, plus can take advantage of that horrible tackling. I’m more worried about the D on the Philly O

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

On punches thrown, I usually say no. He did throw more than one so I think there is a slight chance. The broadcasters seemed convinced it was a possibility but to be honest I don’t pay attention to suspensions that often. There is a bit of history of bad sportsmanship in the NFC East this season. You know who the league office and media concentrates on so maybe the commissioner will make a statement knowing the lowly 49ers are coming into town.

by bignerd on Dec 15, 2009 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

Yep, it’s a rivalry game, just like any game in the NFC east, and yea they’ll focus on just who is coming to play the eagles at Philly

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 8:13 PM PST up reply actions

They didn't suspend Flozell Adams for his cheap shot at NY

But punches are supposed to be considered more severe.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

you mean the trip on Tuck?

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

Shove in the back after the half ended last week

That led to a shoving match between teams. Plus the history from his tripping Tuck back in September.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 15, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

Got ya, yea, a shove really doesnt do much for a suspension, it’s got to be a legit punch

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

Fined heavily and suspended

When? That is the question…

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 15, 2009 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

I would assume the fining will happen… but the suspending? ehhhh, depends on how bad it was and blatant

by PiKAgiant on Dec 15, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

The Eagles have shown they’re fallible as proven against the above mentioned teams. They seem to be susceptible to letdowns. I like it! I feel like this is a good matchup because Jackson being McNabb’s favorite receiver is a downfield guy. If the Niners can put on the type of QB pressure we’ve seen in the past three games, they could take away the long ball most of the game and they’ll be alright there. I have no problems with their running game, the Niners will likely have that contained. I’m only a bit concerned with Brent Celek, but I think our LB’s and safeties might match up reasonably well against him.

When the Niners win the past few seasons

They almost always cover the under. Losses are much more likely to end up as an over.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

walter cherpinsky is predicting us to cover against philly but lose. I think if its close, we’ll beat them. just have to find an answer for deshawn jackson

by hellaninersfan on Dec 16, 2009 10:45 PM PST reply actions

I like his comment

about how the Eagles like to have the occasional stink bomb after big prime time wins, and the fact that they could be looking ahead to Denver and Dallas. I just pray that the Niners don’t come out flat like so many west coast playing in east coast time zone teams do.
