Rolando McClain Bandwagon for 2010 1st Rd Pick

i know its a little early but im hoppin on the rolando mcclain bandwagon for our pick in the 1st round. As of right now alot of drafts have eric berry in the top 5, so i say this, TKO isnt gettin younger, im not sold on our other LB's to be stellar top notch LB's to help p-willy so why not go for a surefire hard hittin LB in Alabamas Rolando McClain, the guy is a beast coming out the SEC just like P-Willy did a few years back, can u imagine how impossible it will be to run on us with these two monsters roamin the middle of the field? i know we need a safety to compliment dashon goldson up top but its safe to say maise from USC will be there with our second 1st round pick.

yea

i know i wish we could get berry pero we all know he’ll probably be gone in the top 5. im not sold on mays, he didnt have a great year to me this year. that kid that someone mentioned down below from south carolina is good too, who knows, the way its lookin we might end up with back to back mid round picks if the panthers win a few more games.

Ojala que los panthers no ganan otro juego. I want a top 10 pick for christmas lol.

For those wondering, since the season is not yet over for the 49ers, we want to focus on the current season. However, we understand that offseason discussion is a must. So, we’re using a single thread at a time to keep things focused in one area for now. It’ll spread out once we get to the offseason.

I'm NOT on board

Spikes position is to eat up blockers. You want to waste a first round pick on a guy that eats up blockers when a guy like Matt Welheim did a good job at it? I’d prefer Joe Haden but that’s just me.

It was this kind of thinking

that led many (myself, sadly, included) to think that drafting Willis would be a bad idea. I think that’s worked out rather well for us so far.

Now, I wouldn’t want to get him if Berry or a top OT is still available, but saying “oh, these LBs don’t do much so we shouldn’t use a high pick on one” is folly.

Huh?

We didn’t have a “Willis-type” when we drafted him. So nobody was saying don’t draft a good LB next to our future Hall of Fame LB since we didn’t have one.

Most useless addition for the next decade

Check. McClain is a guy that runs the defense. That’s Willis’ job we don’t need 2 chiefs on our Linebacking corps

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 17, 2009 7:37 AM PST up reply actions

actually

Willis doesn’t run the D. Didn’t he ask to have that responsibility taken away from him earlier this year?

This.

Willis leads by example, but not by commanding his troops. I’m not sure if the 49ers need a LB to run it. Ideally, you’d want one of your two safeties to run the defense (as they see it all before the snap). I also think a first rounder on an ILB when you already have one is kind of frivolous, more so than taking a first round RB when you already have a star RB.

the 3-4

uses 2 ILBs.

I knew that...

That’s why I said ILB. You don’t take an ILB that’s going to play a low-impact position (the Ted) in the first round. It’s frivolous unless you’re set in every one of the other 20+ starting positions on your team.

Okay...

… and what LB did the 49ers have that would have prevented them from taking Patrick Willis? Willis was a LB that fit PERFECTLY into a position the 49ers desperately needed: the play making WILB. WILBs make plays. SILBs take up people so that the WILB can make his plays. Using a first round pick on that kind of player is frivolous.

by sfgfan on Dec 17, 2009 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

That's what I just said above but you said it better....

We didn’t have a weakside LB when we drafteted Willis. Now that we have a future hall of famer, we don’t need to waste a first rounder on McClain. We have too many holes to take him. OT, RB, QB, S, etc….

by hudd07 on Dec 17, 2009 3:45 PM PST up reply actions

Dont need a LB

McClain would be a waste….

1) ILB might be one of the easiest positions to hit on in the draft

2)We drafted McKillop to take over for Spikes and he had some solid performances and is going to get the first shot

3) ILB is probably our most talented and most set position on the field.

4) A lot of times Ted is the first position to come off the field to make way for nickle

Eric Norwood bandwagon….. South Carolina boys are legit…. just think if we would have gotten sidney rice instead of trading the pick and taking Balmer later… we’d be sweet

McClain's attributes as an ILB

Coverage abilities and film preparation to make on field adjustments for the entire defense. He would be a great addition. However our needs indicate he would reach taking him in the first.

True knowledge is knowing you know, nothing!!

true

but sometimes its wise to draft the best player available, and when running a 3-4 LB are never enough, the better the LB the more creative u can get with your frontline blitzes, but if theres a stud OT or berry then id say go for that. im just sayin if those positions arent there when we draft we should go for the best player that would be able to come in and start like willis.

by Nesto415 on Dec 18, 2009 12:24 AM PST up reply actions

Are you kidding

He’s a great player but #1, lets worry about it when the season is over and we know exactly what draft slots we have, and #2 I thought McKillop was drafted to complement Willis when Spikes is gone. The way I see it, LB is one of the lowest positions of need right now.

If Brian Price enters

Draft him, he’s better than McClain

by Rocky63215 on Dec 17, 2009 4:15 PM PST reply actions

Rolando McClain is great.

But the 49ers have far more pressing needs than LB.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

by Fearless Frog on Dec 17, 2009 10:03 PM PST reply actions

taking another ILB when we already have a star is not comprable to taking another RB when we already have a star.

1. most ILBs don’t return punts and kickoffs. If we pick another RB he will.

2. Gore is injured all the time, while patrick willis is super durable.

3. gore has 3 years tops before he starts to decline if he doesn’t start splitting carries. Willis has 10-12 at least.

4. Since we still have TKO next year another ILB will probably actually see less snaps than a change of pace RB.

by hellaninersfan on Dec 17, 2009 10:57 PM PST reply actions

You don't...

… need to take a player in the first round to earmark him as a potential returner. Gore is always knicked up, but he’s still amongst league leaders in rushing. The 49ers have more pressing needs than a “change of pace back”. You don’t take backups with your first round pick, especially if the starter is making, you know, starter money already.
