49ers-Eagles: Final Injury Report

The 49ers had their last bit of practice today and I believe are heading off to Philly at some point today.  I'd think leaving today could help with that early Sunday start, but we'll see.  After the jump I've posted what was a very brief post-game press transcript.  Staley will definitely be starting on Sunday, and Arnaz Battle will be returning punts, so we'll all get to collectively hold our breath for small chunks of Sunday's game.

Opening statements:

"We had a good week this week, a couple of days of good practice. It is more about getting mental work this time of year. We are trying to get our guys healthy, fresh and ready for the game. As far as [T Joe] Staley is concerned, we are glad to have him back. He will start. [T Barry] Sims will back up."

On what he saw in Staley this week:

"Actually, even the last couple of weeks, he has been talking about how good he was feeling. Of course I keep a rapport with the trainer, Fergie [Jeff Ferguson], and Fergie kept giving me updates here and there and said he was doing great. He possibly could have gone last week, but I wanted to give him another week simply because we just really wanted to make sure he was ready and didn't want to take any steps backwards because he has been doing so well. He has looked great. He looked good last week in the things he did and I am very excited to see how he does."

On how well Sims filled in for Staley:

"Outstanding. I don't think anyone really knew what to expect. Last year, he played some right tackle and did a good job last year, but I think this year he exceeded that by far. He held up and just did a really nice job."

On who will return punts Sunday:

"[WR] Arnaz [Battle]."

On whether taking Wednesday off had the desired effect on the players:

"You really won't know that until Sunday, but I think so. I believe so."

eek!

Arnaz! I wish we had stuck with Morgan returning punts.

I kinda wonder how Jason Hill would do back there. At this point, I GUESS we might as well not tinker around, but it seems like Arnaz is good for at least one scary play fielding punts, so I’m not sure how much advantage we get from consistency alone.

I think Josh Morgan was returning KO’s but hasn’t retuned a punt. It shows on the team stats he has no PR’s.

But yeah, almost anyone but Arnaz would make me feel better. Someone needs to scream at them to take a chance on J Hill. He was supposed to be the fastest receiver in his draft year.

Yeah Morgan is only back there on kickoffs

I’d rather have Jones fielding punts. He seems more sure handed. Neither of them can run after they catch it, so I’d rather have Jones. Plus aren’t we paying that guy too much money anyways – might as well do something.

He's a long time veteran

Arnaz is, so it’s not surprising that his salary is likely up there. I just wonder if this is his contract year. He’s not playing like it is. But I hope it is so he can be given his pink slip in the offseason. :)

I meant Jones

Jones is getting more this year than Morgan.

Batle can get good yards when he fields a punt

he just has a tendency to lose the punt that’s terrifying to watch.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

My bad

maybe it’s because I want Morgan to turn into John Taylor v. 2.0… which would be AWESOME.

Anyway, let’s just hope that Battle plays it safe…

Personally, I like his little heads up play on that one punt return that gave us like 5 extra yards down near our goal line.

Frankly, I don’t understand why Battle has had trouble. As a receiver, a few years back, he always had sure hands. Obviously, returning punts is different, but still.

With Maclin out

They are loosing a lot of speed. I like the idea of Spencer playing physical at the line and then releasing Jackson to T. Brown in Nickle coverage.

Have the Niners been taking Lewis out on 3rd downs?

Philly's injury report is concerning

For them though. Maclin and Westbrook definitely out and maybe even Celek is not a good sign for them. Good for the Niners though!!

I'm pretty sure Celek will play though

He’s still very dangerous.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Celek will play...

Celek played through both the ATL and NY Giants game with what he felt was torn ligaments in his thumb. His back was a litle sore but he will go on Sunday, count on it.

He will get a lot of looks since DeSean will get double covered, but do not look past Jason Avant…he may not of had any passes other than during that 2-point conversion against the NY, but he will be utilized a lot as a quick option against your front 7.

I guess Goldson will have to take him out then

Preferably in the 1st quarter. TE’s have posed a problem for us all year. Celek is no joke.

It's that seam route that kills us

Good for 8-10 yards every single time.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

I think it works against most teams

Can’t take everything away on every play.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Another thing about Battle

I think Battle may be trying to “make something happen”. Twice in the last game he tried to pick the ball up and make a sneaky play.
I wonder if he’s trying to make something happen so that he’ll have a better chance of being picked up elsewhere in the offseason. If thats the case then we’re all in for it.

by goatfather on Dec 18, 2009 3:28 PM PST reply actions

Hope not! If he decides to have some cajones something good better happen!
