49ers-Eagles Game Thread #4
The 49ers have gotten back into this game, but at 0-for-8 on third downs, they continue to shoot themselves in the foot. They're down 20-13 heading into the fourth quarter. A loss eliminates them from playoff contention, a win puts it off for another week. The 49ers need to step up right about now.

half full or half empty...
are the ’niners a team really close to being good – last minute losses and momentum killing mistakes detracting from otherwise promising performances… or are they a mediocre team that masks a basic lack of quality with a few big playmakers?
i think it’s the former.
just don’t know about this Smith kid…. I so want to believe in him… with that O-line, it’s so hard to know.

my point is that it seems like every big pass play is against them. i mean, every team has pass-defending liabilities, but they don’t seem to be involved in every single pass defense fail.

It really sucks that McC doesn’t know how to build a team, because we still don’t know about our QB since he doesn’t have a line around him. What happens if we rebuild our O-Line, get decent-to-good pass protection, and we find out that Smith still can’t function as a decent QB?

It means that there's a context to things
Yeah he had bad decision making today. Those picks were on him today, and it killed us.
He also has no line to protect him so he can actually throw downfield. McNabb’s stats were virtually identical today, but because his line is better he was able to throw the deep ball.

QB stats for the day
You tell me which one is which
20/37, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 177 yards
21/36, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 306 yards
Other than yardage the stats on the QBs are practically identical. For everyone saying that Smith isn’t an NFL quality qb are you willing to say the same about McNabb?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
by smileyman on Dec 20, 2009 4:41 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
It should be noted that the difference in yards can be attributed largely to the amount of time a QB has to throw.

306 yards=177 yards
2 INTs=3 INTS

Missing the point
completion percentage is nearly identical. INTs are nearly identical. The yardage gained is because McNabb had time to wait for the deep route to develop. Alex didn’t.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

So ur saying D-Jax is significantly better than Crabtree? Perhaps McNabb puts Jackson in the position to make huge plays

Jackson makes big plays

I think being open by 15 yards (No exxageration on the TD)
Is on DJax not on McNabb
Gimme 1 round!

It has nothing to do with the fact that Alex Smith has a below average arm? Riight.

PERFECT PASS by Roth!
I’d take him over Smith each and every day of the week, month, year.
I'm still not convinced.

Wow, bold statement.
Taking a two time Super Bowl winning quarterback over anybody…. :)

Actually I’d take Brady, Brees, and Manning over him

Ehh, yea, i guess i’d do that too, but Ben is a hall of famer in my mind

Just a little Duh comment for the Smith is just as good as Smith grooiupies.

Start Davis. What do we have to lose a playoff spot? He’ll make plays. He’s mobile and not Smith mobile (running to the sidline and throwing the ball away)

WOnt happen, i think they just want to give it to Smith the rest of the way and get him more comfortable
by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 4:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Smith's gonna be the starter next year
Seems to have the coaches(‘s?) support. He’ll get the start to get more experience. 2 of the worst teams in the league, good time to practice.

Then be prepared for another 7-9 or 8-8 season
by DFAAurillia on Dec 20, 2009 4:50 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not making excuses for Smith
But he’s not the only one causing 7-9 seasons. The team has a lot of glaring issues more important than the QB. True, he’s no Brady or Manning who’s gonna lead the team, but he’s far from our biggest problem. He’s better than a lot of QBs out there.

I like to think of him as the poor man's Tony Romo
Looks great against terrible teams and terrible against great teams. Both have occasional great stat game and a terrible OLine in front of them.
by thegame1921 on Dec 20, 2009 5:09 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok I’ll give you he’s better than Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, and Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the Rams pu pu platter of QBs. Who else is he better than?

LOL so it’s the O-lines fault for Smith but it’s Cutler’s fault he’s had a bad year hahahahaha

Our Oline has barely improved in the last 5 years.
Its not as bad as when Alex was a rookie, but there are still plays at least once a game where he gets hit during a 3 step drop.
Gimme 1 round!

Here's some more
Moore of Carolina, Campbell of WAS, Freeman, Clemons, and Cassell. A few more guys I’d say were even, and he’s a top 15 QB

I’d take Cassel, Cutler, Garrard, and Campbell over smith. And Mark Sanchez is the jets QB not Clemons. And Freeman is a rookie. He also beat seattle 24-7 today

I'd tale Smith over Sanchez too

Campbell is a bum, Cutler throws 5 picks nearly every game it seems
Cassell has 6% less Comp %, 2 less TDs, and a few more INTs. Garrard has nearly the same exact stats as Alex with less TDs. And Freeman has 6 more INT than TD. So I’ll take Smith over all of those guys

I'm not making excuses
I’m aware of Smith’s shortcomings. I’m just saying he’s not as bad as a lot of people think. I think a lot of 9ers fans got spoiled with Montana and Young. Smith is definitely not a Top 10 QB but I still think he’s far from the bottom.

from an Eagles fan
Did not see the game, just looking at stats and news recaps. I think your organization is building a solid team that will win the West consistently in years to come. Smith was not worth a #1 pick but it is hard to determine how good he is with all the staff changes and the OL problems. If I was working in your FO I’d target OL in the draft and look at a QB in the 3rd or 4th round. I think Jake Locker will be the next great QB out of college but not sure the 49ers will get a chance to draft him in 2011.
