49ers-Eagles Game Thread #4
The 49ers have gotten back into this game, but at 0-for-8 on third downs, they continue to shoot themselves in the foot. They're down 20-13 heading into the fourth quarter. A loss eliminates them from playoff contention, a win puts it off for another week. The 49ers need to step up right about now.
GO NINERS!

half full or half empty...
are the ’niners a team really close to being good – last minute losses and momentum killing mistakes detracting from otherwise promising performances… or are they a mediocre team that masks a basic lack of quality with a few big playmakers?
i think it’s the former.
just don’t know about this Smith kid…. I so want to believe in him… with that O-line, it’s so hard to know.

yes...that's obvious...

Secondary and ROFLMFAOLine
need to be completely rebuilt with the exception of Staley on the OL and we can keep Spencer in the secondary. And maybe Bly on the cheap
Gimme 1 round!
Staley should be forced to earn it
There should be absolutely no certainty who’s starting next year for the 49ers. This offensive line is the joke of the league.

It really sucks that McC doesn’t know how to build a team, because we still don’t know about our QB since he doesn’t have a line around him. What happens if we rebuild our O-Line, get decent-to-good pass protection, and we find out that Smith still can’t function as a decent QB?

But Smith looked sharp when he had protection tonight during the third quarter before the O-Line, like a Yugo, managed to break down again.
No he did not. He makes bad decisions, his accuracy is mediocre at best, and he has a below average arm on the deep ball
Looked pretty good during the 1st half of the 3rd quarter when the niners score 10 in 4 minutes
Oh wait…he had an o-line for those 4 minutes. Silly him.

He hhas something along the lines of a 16-12 TD-INT ratio
he’s completed 60% of his passes with a mediocre line and receiving corp. I’ll take that.

I've supported Smith his whole career
But even I’m starting to lose hope, he has no accuracy. Still hoping an off-season acting as a starter will help get some of his issues resolved.
Nothing will be fixed until we get a serviceable O-line

Ball State? Name a defense they played in college that would rank near a defense that is in the NFL. The answer is you can’t.

alex smith
was the winner today…
of Biggest Loser of the Game…
1st place for awful decision making, along with an excellent job of running away from the pocket, along with his typical overthrowing..
Overthrow = not stepping forward when throwing
I wonder why Alex would not want to step forward today?
Just logic...not Kool-aid...
Smith played well when he had protection…not so well when he did not…simple as that.
Roehlisberger actually manages to stay cool under pressure
Which Smith would on occasion instead of always throwing away.
You see what happens when he doesn't throw it away?
He has to throw into coverage while getting hit. Getting hit and throwing at coverage is not good.

what the hell does “time to throw” mean?
by Hoopers Judge on Dec 20, 2009 4:39 PM PST up reply actions
It means that there's a context to things
Yeah he had bad decision making today. Those picks were on him today, and it killed us.
He also has no line to protect him so he can actually throw downfield. McNabb’s stats were virtually identical today, but because his line is better he was able to throw the deep ball.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

QB stats for the day
You tell me which one is which
20/37, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 177 yards
21/36, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 306 yards
Other than yardage the stats on the QBs are practically identical. For everyone saying that Smith isn’t an NFL quality qb are you willing to say the same about McNabb?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Those stats really don't tell us anything..
But McNabb is a better QB by far.
Smith is still a question mark.
Well, we're waiting....
Kind of...
He showed a lot of character coming out in the second half like he did. Until the O-line fell apart (again)
Missing the point
completion percentage is nearly identical. INTs are nearly identical. The yardage gained is because McNabb had time to wait for the deep route to develop. Alex didn’t.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
D-Jax did it all for him

PERFECT PASS by Roth!
I’d take him over Smith each and every day of the week, month, year.
I'm still not convinced.
Wow, bold statement.
Taking a two time Super Bowl winning quarterback over anybody…. :)
Start Davis. What do we have to lose a playoff spot? He’ll make plays. He’s mobile and not Smith mobile (running to the sidline and throwing the ball away)
by NJ 49ers on Dec 20, 2009 4:44 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Smith's gonna be the starter next year
Seems to have the coaches(‘s?) support. He’ll get the start to get more experience. 2 of the worst teams in the league, good time to practice.
I'm not making excuses for Smith
But he’s not the only one causing 7-9 seasons. The team has a lot of glaring issues more important than the QB. True, he’s no Brady or Manning who’s gonna lead the team, but he’s far from our biggest problem. He’s better than a lot of QBs out there.
I like to think of him as the poor man's Tony Romo
Looks great against terrible teams and terrible against great teams. Both have occasional great stat game and a terrible OLine in front of them.
Ok I’ll give you he’s better than Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, and Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the Rams pu pu platter of QBs. Who else is he better than?

Here's some more
Moore of Carolina, Campbell of WAS, Freeman, Clemons, and Cassell. A few more guys I’d say were even, and he’s a top 15 QB

I’d take Cassel, Cutler, Garrard, and Campbell over smith. And Mark Sanchez is the jets QB not Clemons. And Freeman is a rookie. He also beat seattle 24-7 today
I'd tale Smith over Sanchez too
On the "Brian Sabean should be fired" bandwagon
I want winners...and Eric Berry
Campbell is a bum, Cutler throws 5 picks nearly every game it seems
Cassell has 6% less Comp %, 2 less TDs, and a few more INTs. Garrard has nearly the same exact stats as Alex with less TDs. And Freeman has 6 more INT than TD. So I’ll take Smith over all of those guys
On the "Brian Sabean should be fired" bandwagon
I want winners...and Eric Berry
I'm not making excuses
I’m aware of Smith’s shortcomings. I’m just saying he’s not as bad as a lot of people think. I think a lot of 9ers fans got spoiled with Montana and Young. Smith is definitely not a Top 10 QB but I still think he’s far from the bottom.

Did not see the game, just looking at stats and news recaps. I think your organization is building a solid team that will win the West consistently in years to come. Smith was not worth a #1 pick but it is hard to determine how good he is with all the staff changes and the OL problems. If I was working in your FO I’d target OL in the draft and look at a QB in the 3rd or 4th round. I think Jake Locker will be the next great QB out of college but not sure the 49ers will get a chance to draft him in 2011.
