49ers-Eagles Game Thread #4

49ers_logo_medium @ Th_eagles_icon_medium

The 49ers have gotten back into this game, but at 0-for-8 on third downs, they continue to shoot themselves in the foot.  They're down 20-13 heading into the fourth quarter.  A loss eliminates them from playoff contention, a win puts it off for another week.  The 49ers need to step up right about now.

GO NINERS!

half full or half empty...

are the ’niners a team really close to being good – last minute losses and momentum killing mistakes detracting from otherwise promising performances… or are they a mediocre team that masks a basic lack of quality with a few big playmakers?

i think it’s the former.

Well, when St. Louis is playing their rookie 3rd string QB and possible no Steven Jackson i think the Niners might have a chance, seeing how a run-every-down offense beat them week 2. And Detriot QB Stanton throws nothing but picks.

If he comes back we could at least look into him. He’s an underrated QB who still holds the NFL record for career completion percentage. He also clearly transitions between offensive systems well.

by Chimneyfish on Dec 20, 2009 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

He'll be back next year

too many teams need a QB for him to not get a shot at it.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 20, 2009 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

I’m done with Smith. We need to start Nate Davis. Nate could be the next McNabb except he won’t throw up during games and he’ll actually win us a Super Bowl. (Well that was a little extreme) Strong arm, mobile, great instincts in the pocket, nice touch and can actually lead the receiver for some yac. Bench Smith please!

by NJ 49ers on Dec 20, 2009 4:31 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Smith looks like he’s had at least three bongloads any time he has to perform under pressure.

You're crying about Smith throwing 3 picks

With no protection against the Eagles. But when Davis plays 1 team that’s decent cause he played in a HORRIBLE conference and throws 4 picks its a bad day lol

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

no i’m not, i could care much less about that, we’re talking about NATE DAVIS AND COLLEGE, and all i’m saying is that WHO KNOWS ABOUT HOW HE’LL PLAY IN THE NFL, we’ve never seen him play in the NFL. I mean, i never said “OH PLAY NATE DAVIS!!!” because honestly, if they do they do, great…

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

BTW I'm not saying you're the one

Calling we need Nate now. I’m just making the point that the all this “he’s looked great!” is an illusion. He played against dudes that aren’t in the NFL anymore in training camp and pre-season and his illustrious college career came against glorified high school teams

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

Look, i’m saying, nobody here, or any 49er fan can really say how Nate Davis will perform in the NFL, you can PREDICT, but nobody will KNOW. that’s that, DONE

Really and what school did he play for

Ball State? Name a defense they played in college that would rank near a defense that is in the NFL. The answer is you can’t.

LOL, dunno how that spells bad play in the NFL but sure

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

Um

Here’s how it spells bad play. He played against teams that were about the equivalent of state championship high school teams. When he played against a legitimate college team he threw 4 picks. Imagine what happens when he plays against a defense that is actually GOOD

It means Smith isn’t supposed to have any blame for his failures.

by riderless on Dec 20, 2009 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

It means that there's a context to things

Yeah he had bad decision making today. Those picks were on him today, and it killed us.

He also has no line to protect him so he can actually throw downfield. McNabb’s stats were virtually identical today, but because his line is better he was able to throw the deep ball.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

QB stats for the day

You tell me which one is which

20/37, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 177 yards

21/36, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 306 yards

Other than yardage the stats on the QBs are practically identical. For everyone saying that Smith isn’t an NFL quality qb are you willing to say the same about McNabb?

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 20, 2009 4:41 PM PST reply actions

Those stats really don't tell us anything..

by riderless on Dec 20, 2009 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

completion percentage is nearly identical. INTs are nearly identical. The yardage gained is because McNabb had time to wait for the deep route to develop. Alex didn’t.

I'm not making excuses for Smith

But he’s not the only one causing 7-9 seasons. The team has a lot of glaring issues more important than the QB. True, he’s no Brady or Manning who’s gonna lead the team, but he’s far from our biggest problem. He’s better than a lot of QBs out there.

Did not see the game, just looking at stats and news recaps. I think your organization is building a solid team that will win the West consistently in years to come. Smith was not worth a #1 pick but it is hard to determine how good he is with all the staff changes and the OL problems. If I was working in your FO I’d target OL in the draft and look at a QB in the 3rd or 4th round. I think Jake Locker will be the next great QB out of college but not sure the 49ers will get a chance to draft him in 2011.
