Panthers Watch 2009: Sunday Night Football edition

I have to say that it's rather amusing how frequently the Carolina Panthers have gotten on national television in spite of being a fairly awful team.  The Panthers were at Dallas week 3 on Monday Night, home against Miami week 11 on Thursday night, and now find themselves hosting the Minnesota Vikings on NBC's Sunday Night Football.  Speaking of which, if you don't have access to a tv this evening, you can watch Sunday Night Football online at MSNBC.com.

In spite of their awful nature, this excess of tv coverage has provided 49ers fans a chance to watch their second first round draft pick continue it's assent up the draft board.  The Panthers are 0-2 on national television, and we're hoping they'll luck out and drop to 0-3.  The draft board remains rather interesting in terms of the the top 11 picks.  All of the 5-8 teams lost today, while the Raiders won to improve to 5-9.  If the Panthers win tonight they move into a tie with our beloved 49ers.  The 49ers have the tiebreaker due to strength of schedule, but if they're tied it doesn't really matter for our purposes.  If the Panthers were to lose tonight, that Raiders win makes things all the more interesting as we'd have five teams tied at 5-9, with the potential of a 6th team if the Redskins can upset the Giants at home tomorrow night.

It absolutely kills me to have to root for the QB who shall not be named, but we need a Vikings win tonight.  A loss by the Vikings and our rooting would be for naught.  The Vikings need a win to climb to only 1 game back of the Saints in the race for home field throughout the playoffs.  So the Vikings have a whole ton to play for.  The Panthers sit as a 9 point underdog, so let's hope they don't decide to shock folks tonight.

I know we want a Panthers loss....

but I just can’t root for Favre and the Viqueens…I would rather the Saints have home field advantage

by sanfranfanmdk on Dec 20, 2009 6:04 PM PST reply actions

Saints will still have home field

This will just force the saints to ACTUALLY PLAY against Carolina in week 17. We need Farve and the Vikes to win.

Gimme 1 round!

I'd have reather not watched it.

You should only call them the Viqeens if they are a sub.500 team but after last nights letdown…
The O-line wasent good but McKinnie made them look awful as Peppers constantly beat him. McKinnie had some ankle problems the last few games so I hope that attributed to his lousy performance and that he will get better. However the most likely case is that Perppers is feelin’ good and went off.

Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!

Sorry...

Can’t do it…We can still get a stud if Carolina wins.

Yeesh

This has been an ugly day of football performances, and this game is no different. Nobody wants to win.

You're not kidding

Great play by Farve clutch drop by Schenko

I scored 195 pts in fantasy and loss

I also missed watching a stream for the first time this season, today sucked.

damn 195 point loss

brutal. In what an ESPN league? That would probably be the highest scorign loss in our league this year. My high score on a win was 238

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

Really kills the chances

At landing Berry. We needed the Panthers to lose out to have even a remote chance to trade up. Now it’s time to look at the 2nd tier players from picks 10-15 because all of the #1’s will be off the board.

Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

Get a Lineman, and get a pass rusher in the first round, DONE

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

We can get Jerry Hughes late in the first or early in the second

He will be the best pass rusher out of this draft.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 11:20 PM PST up reply actions

Ok, so then get a lineman and a good SS and they’re straight if you’re right about this pass rusher Jerry Hughes…

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

yea, i’m reading up on him also, looks to be like a speed rusher off the end, top-end speed good tackling, wouldnt be a good OLB, but that’s not why they’d draft him

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 11:33 PM PST up reply actions

Actually the position he's perfect for is OLB

In a 3-4. He’s too small to be a 4-3 DE where he’d have to stuff the run also but as a Kevin Greene type he could be absolutely nasty.

Gimme 1 round!

not good on coverage though

I cannot beleive the Panthers are going to beat Minnesota…badly

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 20, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions

I think it’s quite funny!

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions

Sure...

if you don’t care about getting a higher draft pick…it’s funny.

by Drew Kerr on Dec 20, 2009 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

anything but funny. nothing has been funny this year at all except sweeping the cards.

by srill waiting on Dec 20, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Mmk, i mean, i might be the minority here, i’m not happy with the outcome, but i’m not angry either of the panthers game, it’s just a good game… sorry, i got to laugh

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

EXACTLY!!!

i hate that phrase, don’t you?

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

haha, yea, screw that phrase, hey the niners lost… it is what it is

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

kind of sucks hearing in that text, lol

by srill waiting on Dec 20, 2009 8:31 PM PST up reply actions

Oh give me a break, so now the niners have two middle first round picks at best… mmk, so there’s nobody good in the middle of the first round?

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

i don’t think they’ll use both picks in the first round anyways. one of them will be traded away for mkore picks. i think that’s what they should do at least

by srill waiting on Dec 20, 2009 8:27 PM PST up reply actions

Well, i’d only do that if the player i was looking to draft gets drafted already, then i would trade the pick for more picks or looking to get a player via trade

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

i haven’t really looked into the draft yet so i don’t have a say on how deep it is. time will tell. (another stupid phrase)

by srill waiting on Dec 20, 2009 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly, we don’t know, so let’s wait and see what’s up… agreed on time will tell

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Not really

DeAngelo Williams in on two of my three fantasy teams.

I still won all of my matchups today, but I need him in order to win some championships.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 20, 2009 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

Yea i had Williams on mine, and he was doing pretty well, consistent… but oh well… as i said above, it is what it is

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:31 PM PST up reply actions

It is what it is?

What you’re Mike Singletary now?

I need my championships!
I want to win everything!

The Rankers (my fantasy team’s name) will dominate!

YOU SELFISH PERSON YOU!!!! hahaha, yea, i was in the playoffs up until the final week when i got knocked out, THANK YOU KURT WARNER, AND THANK YOU MATT RYAN!

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

I need to be selfish

It’s my first year playing FF and I started the season 1-5 (combined, 3 leagues).

I got a lot of crap for being a “rookie”
I’m dominating them all now.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 20, 2009 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

Ehh, think like a niner fan, THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR DUDE!

by PiKAgiant on Dec 20, 2009 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

I've been saying that for 4 years now as a FF player

This is the first season that I’ve made the playoffs in any league (I normally play 2), and I need 50 pts to win because of the Niner’s lousy performance today

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 20, 2009 11:52 PM PST up reply actions

I got screwed

My fantasy opponent is a big Eagles fan and he had McNabb, D. Jackson, and the Eagles DST.

I had Gore, Nedney, and the Niners DST.

He’s ahead by 48 points and I have Steve Smith and Kevin Boss left.

I think I’m done.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 20, 2009 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

The single biggest reason the Niners season went down the tubes

Besides our inconsistent play of course… is FAVRE!

Beats us on a last second heave to stop us from going 3-0.

Lost to AZ when we needed them to beat them (though our loss to Seattle didn’t help).

Lost to Carolina when beating them would’ve given us a better draft pick.

Thanks for nothing!

100% agree

DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Either trade up to get Eric Berry, or trade down a big amount of spots, get a 2nd and 3rd rounder, and take Spiller
1b. An OT
2a. Iupati
2b. CB/S depth
3-7. Whoever the hell you want

Awwww, double nut kick for the day

Even worse, the Saints probably hand the Panthers one more win in Week 17 because this Minnesota loss locks up home field for the Saints next week.
