From a biased Cal fan

-Chose Kwame Harris over Nnamdi Asomugha in 2003

-Chose Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers in 2005

-Chose Chilo Rachal over DeSean Jackson in 2008

I'll be accused of looking in hindsight, but I don't care. All I know is I screamed at my TV every year over these picks, and now can't think at how much better this team would be if we had them.

Go Cal. We obviously must draft Syd'Quan Thompson and Jahvid Best this draft. JK.

Aaron Rodgers wouldn't survive

Had he been chosen to play behind the Niners Oline for 5 years.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 5:58 PM PST reply actions

Not sure about that.

I don’t think Rodgers would have survived playing as a rookie or 2nd year player, but the Packers line has been a joke for two years now.

Alex Smith was forced into action too soon and it skewed the perception of his career. Rodgers would have been destroyed by the Green Bay media if he replaced the Golden Boy as a rookie and wasn’t ready to produce.

Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

Rodgers only gets sacked cause he'll hold the ball 3 or 4 seconds

Their line isn’t that bad. Its not NEARLY as bad as ours

Gimme 1 round!

I agree

Rodgers holds on to the ball too long.
He’d be killed behind our line.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 20, 2009 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

Granted

He only holds the ball as long as QBs like Payton or McNabb… But they can get away with that cause they have good/great offensive lines. Rodgers line is about average but he holds the ball long enough to get sacked 3 times a game

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

Peyton doesn't hold the ball too long

He completes passes very quickly.
McNabb gets away with it because he is very mobile.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 21, 2009 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

Payton CAN move the ball very quickly

But most of the time he has all day to throw and he can sit back there and pick defenses apart. He would not be nearly as successful as he is if we swaped then Indy line with the Niners patchwork LAMOLine and he stood behind them.

Gimme 1 round!

yeah well

cal got absolutely screwed out of the rose bowl so they were a little disillusioned

DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Either trade up to get Eric Berry, or trade down a big amount of spots, get a 2nd and 3rd rounder, and take Spiller
1b. An OT
2a. Iupati
2b. CB/S depth
3-7. Whoever the hell you want

This is the argument

Alabama used when Utah spanked them and the argument that either KU or K state used like 12 or 13 years ago when they claimed they were national champ and got relegated to a bad bowl then got destroyed.

Its a load when they used it too.

2005

Cal got hosed by Mack Brown and Texas out of the Rose Bowl and didn’t give much of a crap about that game. Should have played harder but such is life.

3 points:

1) Like I said above: Texas Tech did not own Aaron Rodgers. He had a worse game than his norm, but it was hardly ‘bad’ by any normal sense of the word. He threw for 246 yards, 1 TD, and ran for another, with 1 int. Not great, but not ‘owned.’

2) Cal’s best WR (Geoff McArthur) broke his leg during bowl practice, and their 2nd best WR (Chase Lyman) blew out his knee against USC earlier in the year. Rodgers didn’t have many targets to rack up big stats with.

3) His completion percentage was lower because he had to throw when Cal fell behind big early and TTech knew Cal was going to throw.

There were many reasons Cal got blown out in the Holiday Bowl. Aaron Rodgers is not on that list.

I never mentioned the Rose Bowl part. I don’t buy that excuse.

At the end of the day, what does any of this have to do with weather or not the niners should have drafted Rodgers? Are you saying that the Holiday Bowl results mean that Alex Smith was the right choice? I’m not sure what your point is. And you’ve still disproved none of my points. Your only response is to keep repeating ‘excuses.’

passing on Jackson was a mistake. A lot of teams made it. It would be nice to have a receiver who can get separation (but it is not our highest priority now).

Cheap for a good reason...

The concussion worry has to be a huge concern. The position of RB entails a tremendous amount of contact and a predisposition towards concussions doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies at night.

by sigma on Dec 21, 2009 12:13 AM PST up reply actions

I knew a few people on here hate this argument and always post hindsight is 20/20

But for christs sake this is a huge issue with the 49ers scouting department. Every freaking year they are highly overrating ACC players and filling out the rest of the draft board with SEC players.

Cal’s football program had never been this good, yet 49ers have passed Cal player after Cal player when they play in the 49ers back yard! It’s not just Cal, the 49ers seem awful pinpointing any kind of talent in the entire Pac-10. I believe the 49ers have 2 players from Washington (one of the Pac-10’s worst programs this decade) and only Chilo from USC.

They deserve to get some heat for passing on so many good regional players. It obvious by NFL results the 49ers cannot properly scout and evaluate players playing in their own part of the country, it’s like a huge blind spot for the organization.

I guess the west coast scout sucks

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 20, 2009 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

It’s either the scouts or the people reading their reports have a particular bias for other conferences

by bignerd on Dec 20, 2009 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

Alot of people believe the SEC myth

That if you’re in the SEC you’re playing better competition. And that’s true… For about 2-3 teams each Season. The rest of the teams in the SEC are worse than your average PAC-10, Big-10, or Big-12 school because all the stud recruits go to Alabama, LSU or Florida. You might get 1 standout like Eric Berry that stayed local but aside from that all the talent in that conference is on 3 teams. Somehow though the idea still survives that playing SEC competition is superior. Despite the fact that guys like oh… I dunno say the top 7 of the top 15 scouts inc prospects play in the Big 12 and there were 3 from the SEC Berry, Haden (Florida), McClaina (Alabama) (if you go through the entire 32 there are only 2 more SEC names – both from Florida. Weak conference top to bottom, just very top heavy.

Scouts or management shouldn't buy into that bias

But if they are from the South I guaran-damn-tee you they do.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 20, 2009 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

Amen.

I want to see the “SEC is the best in the world” burned by Texas at the National Championship this year. I think the 49ers have made a huge mistake by not playing closer attention to the Pac-10, Big-10 and Big-12 schools.

by sigma on Dec 21, 2009 12:15 AM PST up reply actions

Hope they do this year

Cause all the talent is spread across the country except for the recruits from Florida many of whom could be overrated.

Kal SUCKS!! I hope we never draft a kal player! Niners should draft Toby Gerhart to be the thunder to gore’s lightening in our backfield and we should go back to the power running game. That is after we draft some OL. lol

LOL

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 21, 2009 8:04 AM PST up reply actions

I just can’t seem to get into these “we could have drafted player x” type of things. We could have drafted a lot of players. We could have signed a lot of players. We could be the best team ever right now. Seriously, we could.

To me it’s less important to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah that we don’t have a specific player or that we didn’t make a specific decision and more important to be critical of the decisions we did made that haven’t worked out so that we can improve them in the future.

It’s not important that we didn’t draft DeSean Jackson. It is important that we wasted a pick on Chiloh Rachal. It’s not important that we didn’t draft Nmandi. It is important that we wasted so many years on a terrible player like Kwame Harris. It doesn’t matter one single bit that we didn’t choose Aaron Rodgers. It is extremely significant that we took a quarterback and shoved him into an absolute no-win situation was almost no regard for the fact that he couldn’t win in that situation.

It’s the bad decisions we DID make that are the problem – NEVER the good decisions that we didn’t make.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 21, 2009 8:09 AM PST reply actions

+1

Rodgers wouldn’t have succeeded if he were thrown in to the fire here IMO. As far as Chilo is concerned, I don’t think the jury is out yet on him. He seems to be run blocking a lot better, though I still believe O and D line are our biggest needs going forward.
