Case Keenum: 49ers QB of the Future?

Disclaimer: Sadly I had to move out of California, so I only get to watch nationally televised 49er games. Therefore my current thoughts on team needs (i.e., QB) are based mainly on the Thursday night offensive suck-fest against the Bears, the Alex couldn't hit the broad side of a barn MNF game against the Cardinals and the highlight (more like lowlight) reel after the other games.

So what do the 49ers need most to make them a playoff team or even have a winning record? The defense is up and down, but has had flashes of brilliance, especially lately. Our receivers look a whole lot better now that we have Crabs (I take it all back Mr. Crabtree, you were worth the wait. That TD catch you made on MNF where your arms had to grow a few inches to pull in another of Alex's way off passes, amazing.) Frank the tank is still the man as long as Jimmy Raye doesn't advertise to the opposing team when Frank is going to carry the rock. The O-line could use some help, but the number one need by far is a QB that can scare the defense. We haven't had one of those since Jeff (the antique road show) Garcia.

So who is going to be our QB? Alex seems like a great guy. He keep his nose clean, works very hard, does what he's told, gives to charity and signs LOTS of autographs. Sadly, he is not meant to be an NFL quarterback. As you can tell by screen name (ShaunhillQB1), I was for Shaun starting over Alex this year. It wasn't because Shaun was a great QB, it was because he was a good QB that could bridge the gap until we could find something better. Well the time has come for something better: Case Keenum.

Who the "site decorum" is Case Keenum? He is the QB for the Houston Cougars (yes they are division one). He threw for over 5,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns in his junior year. A fluke? He also threw for over 5,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns in his sophomore year. These numbers are ridiculous. Nobody else is even close. My head is still spinning just thinking about it. His freshman year he put up a more human 2250 yards and 14 TDs with a 68.5 completion percentage. The coaching staff changed between his freshman and sophomore year and he actually improved significantly even though he had to absorb a whole new system. Alex supports should think long and hard about that. We need a QB that thrives under pressure because, lets face it, the 49ers are all about adversity.

I admit that I just learned about this kid so there is still a lot I don't know. I don't follow college until draft time, which for the 49ers seems to already be here. Case Keenum runs the spread offense, which is supposed to be the kiss of death when trying to get drafted into the NFL. Because of this, he will likely slip down the draft boards allowing us to draft him relatively cheap after picking up other needs first (e.g., OT and CB). This is important because nobody wants to spend big money on drafting a QB and relive all the talk of  “potential” that we had and are STILL having with Alex Smith.

I don't have my heart set on this guy for QB (although I am leaning strongly his direction), so I am open to other suggestions. Hopefully some of the Niner's Nation are college fans and you guys can give some comments on who should be our future QB. The only thing that is out of the question is keeping the QBs we have. Alex and Shaun have had their chance and failed. However, if you want to give Nate Davis a shot, I'm open to that.

Final note: Watch the Armed Forces Bowl on New Years Eve to check out Case Kennum in action. I know I will.

Case is going to be a great NFL QB and it would so sweet if the Niners got him

I like Case Keenum alot

but to say Alex Smith is not an NFL caliber QB is a bit silly in my opinion

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 23, 2009 4:13 PM PST reply actions

He only gets to watch prime-time games

the bears one he sucked and he sucked in the cards game too.

I want winners! I want people that WANT to win!

So maybe someone ought to have a larger smaple size before saying things like:

The only reason Case keenum has such outrageous numbers

is because of the offense he runs. look at his passes per game. i remember in one game he threw 75 passes!

he throws 50+ passes EVERY SINGLE game. his numbers are inflated

look at colt brennan. he has the all time TD record, yet was drafted in the 6th round

im not saying that he wont be a good QB. i have no idea if he will. but i do know that with the offense he runs, almost anyone could get huge numbers

DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Trade up to the team that picked Okung along with our 2nd and 3rd rounder for Okung+ their 3rd round pick. We take the team's 2nd most wanted OT with this pick.
1b. Trade down to ~20-22. Get that team's 2nd round pick and take Mike Iupati here. This (hopefully) fixes our o-line issues in one round.
2. Whoever our FA likes as best CB available. Maybe Donovan Warren/Trevor Lindley.
3. BPA
4. Jordan Shipley. Maybe even 3rd round.
5-7. BPA

And Brennan isn't even on an active roster

he’s on a PS somewhere (forget for which team).

He sure was fun to watch in college though.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

exactly

hes on the redskins roster

DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Best OT available (Bulaga/Davis/Campbell)
1b. CJ Spiller or trade down to ~20 and get an extra 2nd rounder
2. Whoever our FO likes as best CB available. Maybe Donovan Warren/Trevor Lindley.
3. BPA
4. Jordan Shipley. Maybe even 3rd round.
5-7. BPA

Case in his AWAY uni looks like Smith in his AWAY Utah uni

Just google it.

There are a couple of things I like about Case Keenum
     1. He’s super accurate.
     2. He’s a mobile threat.

But when the game is on the line, he’s not the QB I would want behind center for my team. He goes from pin point to erratic just like that. He also doesn’t have the fundamental release you want in an NFL QB. Lastly he has a weak arm.

Maybe a good 6th round pick?

by supraman on Dec 23, 2009 4:27 PM PST reply actions

nailed it

system qb’s always seem to have these two defining traits (accuracy, semblance of mobility). their weak arms and tendency to panic when out of the shotgun means they don’t tend to not pan out in the NFL.

wanna hear a funny joke? the Buccaneers picked Gaines Adams over Patrick Willis

by rcleverly on Dec 25, 2009 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

Case has been a beast in college because of the offense he was in. I’m very very skeptical of spread offense QB’s, as there’s a huge learning curve in transitioning to the pro-style game. However, he does have some impressive physical attributes that could make the transition easier (strong arm, bigger frame).

The QB I really like, and would hope the Niners would draft if they choose to go that direction (and I really wish they would) is Jimmy Clausen. Dude has ran a pro-style offense for years now, behind a bad line, and still limited his mistakes. He’s going to be a stud. Keep A.Smith, let Clausen learn on the bench for a year, and we’re in business.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

by ZeroIndulgence on Dec 23, 2009 5:04 PM PST reply actions

alex smith is still young though

and singletary said he was the QB. i dont know why he would say that then turn around and draft clausen. i like clausen too but im a bit weary of him just because he played at notre dame under charlie weis. he just seems like the type of guy that wouldnt make a good transition but like you said hes ran a pro style offense for years now so maybe he would be great in the nfl. but who knows this offseason is going to hold some tough decisions.

by nhlogan on Dec 24, 2009 12:32 AM PST up reply actions

ok i agree

but to play devils advocate, Ryan Leif was still young when the Chargers sent him packing.

This better not be a Colt Brennan repeat

Brennan also put up god-like numbers in college, but as soon as he faced a decent defense in the Hawaii Bowl, he suddenly looked like a bum.

by Amigo on Dec 24, 2009 10:24 AM PST reply actions

There are a lot of guys who play in pass-wacky offenses in college who won't sniff an NFL roster ...

Basically, anybody who’s QB’d for Texas Tech, for example.

I have no idea about Case. Don’t know him. Don’t know his team. I do know that there’s no point in spending anything but a 7th round pick on a guy with that low a profile.

Draft him in the 7th, or sign him as an UDFA, and see what he can do in camp. There’s very little cost to it. But don’t expect anything from him.

by Ronaldinho on Dec 24, 2009 8:03 PM PST reply actions

There’s this FA out there that’s better than Case Keenum. We could get him for practically nothing.

'I wanna see him be able to catch the short pass and be elusive and go for six.'

Case for Case Keenum

College numbers look good! Too bad the Houston Cougars are no where near the high caliber play of the NFL, to where a player would look golden in college, but in the NFL the same player looks like ‘fools gold’. Let’s try Nate Davis first before we get any other rookie QB’s. If we draft anyone, please get a couple big offensive linemen to protect our QB and open up holes for Gore and company.

we need a pro-style system QB

QUARTERBACK OF THE FUTURE

NATE (SAVE-US) DAVIS IS THE NINERS ANSWER AT QB FOR MANY YEARS TO COME AND HE WILL LEAD US TO 4 MORE RINGS IN THE BIG GAME WITH THE DEFENSE WE GOT. SING IS THE ANSWER AND WE MAY START LOOKING FOR A KICKER, BUT FIRST WE MUST FIND A K/P RETURNER………………………CUT AND DRY………………………………….BOOK IT DANO.

a kicker?

First off, please stop using all-caps.

Second, why do we need a kicker? Joe Nedney seems fine.

aside from the fact

that he’s like what, 38? But I agree. Kickers are dime a dozen. One man’s trash is another’s treasure

age

Age is really not too big a deal for kickers. Obviously you don’t want a 50-year old kicker, but as long as Nedney’s solid I’m not concerned.

by David Fucillo on Dec 31, 2009 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

Kickers are NOT a dime a dozen

Where were you in 2003?

Nedney is one of the most accurate Kickers in the NFL and he’s the guy I want lining up a 50 yard field goal to win the game.

by SportsChicken on Dec 31, 2009 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

what I meant

is that teams are cutting and signing kickers left and right this year. Guy gets cut from one team, lands on another…they are out there and it’s easier to find one who can do his job well enough that a lot of other positions, especially those that require intricate knowledge of scheme, system, etc.

My mistake.

I just watched the first 3 quarters of the Armed Forces bowl and Case looks horrible against Air Force’s #1 pass defense. His passes are way off and he keeps getting his passes deflected at the line of scrimmage. It’s like watching Alex Smith. I’m concerned that the 49er’s biggest need is a QB and nothing looks too promising in the draft.

5 INTs

it will be like getting jay Cutler without having to give up 1st round picks

DREAM DRAFT:
Trade down #12, #80 (3rd round), and #112 (4th round) to ~18 for #18, #50 (2nd), and #82 (3rd).
1b (16). Draft CJ Spiller
1b. (18). Draft best OT available.
2b. Best CB available.
2b. BPA or trade up
3. Jordan Shipley
5-7. BPA

Hell no. stay away from Keenum

by 49ersAllTheWay on Dec 31, 2009 4:26 PM PST reply actions

i have no idea

but it was said that he had “an off game” or in other words it was uncharacteristic of his play thus far. I don’t care about drafting the kid or not…but if it’s later rounds, this drops his stock…we don’t want to break the draft-bank for a QB anyways do we?

Maybe

It’s signs that he crumbles under pressure or cant perform in adversity. A bowl game is where you should showcase your skills not showcase how bad you might be lol.
