Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Hello from Pride of Detroit

What's up, Niners Nation?  This is Sean from Pride of Detroit, and I'm making my way over to NN to answer any questions you may have about the Lions.  To quickly run down Lions fans' thoughts on the game, I'd say the only reason there is any interest in it is because Drew Stanton is finally going to get his first career start.  Matthew Stafford is out again with a shoulder injury, and the coaches have finally benched Daunte Culpepper, who is just plain terrible.  Most Lions fans have been focused on the draft for the last few weeks and have all but moved on from actual football, so it really is a case of going through the motions from a fan's perspective.  The general expectation for Sunday, like most weeks, is a blowout.  The Lions are bad, and they are even worse on the road, so we all expect SF to win big.

If you have any questions about the Lions, fire away and I (and readers from POD) will do our best to answer them.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Where is your biggest weakness on offense and defense

and who do you think your team will target in the 1st round of the 2010 Draft and why?

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 23, 2009 7:30 PM PST reply actions

Biggest weakness on defense: pass defense. Aside from our rookie safety Louis Delmas, who is awesome and should be in the running for DRotY (first rookie to ever score a safety, int return, and fumble return in one season, third among 2009 rookies in tackles, hits hard, etc), the rest of our secondary is horrible. We already had a weak secondary, and then half of them ended up on the IR. Oh, and we have almost no pass rush, especially up the middle. Alex Smith should have plenty of time and space in front of him to step up and throw all day.

Biggest weakness on offense: probably our QB this week. Drew Stanton, a former 2nd round Millen pick, is finally getting his first NFL start. While he offers a lot more upside than Culpepper, and we’re all finally happy to see him get a shot and prove he can be a good backup in the future, I expect this game to be a rocky one for him. We lost Brandon Pettigrew to injury a few weeks back, so as long as you double-up on Calvin Johnson the whole game, I expect Stanton will have a hard time getting the ball to anybody. We also lost Kevin Smith for the season, which sucks too, but Maurice Morris had a good game last week in Smith’s absence. I’m more worried about our pass game than our run game this Sunday.

And we’re all hoping for Suh in the draft. If we don’t, at this point it’s a toss-up among fans among Okung, Gerald McCoy, and Eric Berry.

by n4ry4 on Dec 23, 2009 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

I actually watched the Lions, Cards game last week

and I was telling some people here that he (Delmas) is the best safety you all have seen since Benny Blades in the 90’s and will be special.

As far as Smith getting time, I am not so sure about that with our Oline troubles. If you all send a few blitz pakages with Sims and co., he can definitely be sacked. I am guessing you all will see a heavy dosage of Gore and not as much passing this game.

As far as Morris, I can’t see those sweep plays you guys ran against the Cards working against us, it’s very hard to run on the Niners D. With the exception of Chris Johnson, no sweeps have worked on us at all.

You mention Eric Berry, but would you say that out of the 4 names listed there he is your last option of that list?

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 23, 2009 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

Not necessarily

There’s a distinction between what the fans want and what GM Martin Mayhew and HC Jim Schwartz are likely to do.

Lions fans on POD are strongly in favor of Suh as the pick, as n4ry4 said. Our backup choice is really split very evenly in terms of popularity between LT Russell Okung, DT Gerald McCoy, and S Eric Berry.

As for what the Lions might actually do, opinions differ. It’s important as a fan to note the difference between what you want your team to do, and what they are likely to do. Bottom line, the only opinions that matter are those of Mayhew and Schwartz. Same goes for the GM and HC of the Rams.

In the current economic environment in the NFL, a trade down from #1 is very unlikely with no rookie salary cap. The Stafford deal ratcheted the bar up even higher for #1 overall picks. For that kind of money, it’s very unlikely that anybody would take a DT at #1 now. That’s QB money, until the economics change and the rookie pay scale isn’t so out of whack. That’s the main reason we’re at a labor impasse right now, with a pending uncapped year. Luckily, the Rams need a QB. Since there are no true "cant miss" players (only players who people mistakenly label "can’t miss"), the Rams will very likely take their QB now for QB money, see what happens with the labor negotiations, and go from there. It’s not 100% guaranteed, but it IS highly probable that the Rams will take a QB now. It’s the prudent thing to do, regardless of what the Rams fans think.

Based on that, I’d say that with his experience in a pro-style offense and well-rounded NFL-type skills (including a very quick release), by Draft Day Jimmy Clausen will win many people over. More importantly, I expect Clausen will win over the only people who matter…….the Rams, and be the #1 pick of the STL Rams.

So I expect the Rams to take Clausen, and the Lions to happily take Suh. Suh is a good fit here. Even though he’s only listed at 6-4, 305, he has low body fat, and the strength of a guy 20 Lbs bigger. His game is power……and he’s fast, too! DC Gunther Cunningham has said he wants GIANT DT’s. HC Jim Schwartz wants the Lions to get bigger and more physical, especially on defense. Most of Schwartz’s anger/frustration/attention has been on the poor coverage, pass rush, and tackling, especially by the DL and the secondary. Most of Mayhew’s waiver wire pickups have been on the DL/secondary. The proof is in the pudding. Actions speak louder than words. Suh is a great fit here, fills a huge need, and is probably the BPA in the entire draft. Mayhew and Schwartz found 5 starters (Stafford, Pettigrew, Delmas, Levy, Sammie Lee Hill) by taking the BPA in the excellent 2009 draft. Expect that trend to continue. Expect the Lions to draft Suh after the Rams draft Clausen.

And as for the alternatives?

As for Okung, like it or not, we have continuity at 4 positions on the OL, and no indications from Schwartz or Mayhew that they are displeased with LT Jeff Backus, even though many fans dislike Backus. Our only revolving door on the OL this year has been at LG. There have been suggestions that Okung can start at LG (has experience there), and in a few years switch to LT. My guess is with his skills, Okung would be better as a guard in a zone-blocking scheme, not our current downhill power-blocking IMO, Okung’s 2 years too late to be a LG here (the zone-blocking scheme left town with OC Jim Coletto after the 2008 season). It’s LT or nothing here. Okung’ a bad fit at LG here. That kind of experiment (switching Okung to LG, then back to LT) is not worth risking the #2 overall pick on. It’s more likely we’ll just take a LG with a lower pick.

Definitely not Gerald McCoy. Mortal lock. Bad fit here, better as a Tampa 2 DT. Too small, too weak to play here……possible bust wherever he lands. He won’t land here. Not Gunther’s kind of DT. Bad fit. Schwartz wants the team to get bigger and more physical. You don’t do that by getting smaller and weaker. Makes no logical sense. He’s a one-trick pony with a quick first step who dives at QB’s legs. Could get pushed around by NFL guards. His size/strength/skill set is a lot like Glenn Dorsey’s. Bad fit.

We need another safety. Eric Berry might be the 2nd best defensive player in this draft. He’s a perfect fir as a LS alongside Delmas. Both are super aggressive, are fast, can cover, have ball skills, can tackle and hit people. Both have great awareness, anticipation, and an inner fire.

Bottom line, Suh is apparently the BPA, and the Lions (the only ones whose opinion matters) will likely stick with BPA and grab Suh, especially since he fills a huge need and is a perfect fit for our style of defense. Eric Berry is also a perfect fit, the BPA at safety, and very high on the overall BPA list (maybe 2nd only to Suh). Gerald McCoy is a terrible fit here, and there is no indication of interest in drafting a LT at this time.

So the likely outcome is:

1 Rams-QB Jimmy Clausen
2 Lions-DT Ndomakong Suh (alternate pick S Eric Berry)

When you pick at #2 the list really doesn’t have to be all that long. It’s likely going to be either Suh or Berry. Nothing else makes sense, based on what we’ve seen and heard from Mayhew/Schwartz/Gunther Cunningham, etc.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 24, 2009 1:21 AM PST up reply actions

Whew

that was a long post.

I find it really odd that Okung isn’t the big priority for you. I know Backus has his fans but isn’t this like his 10th year in the league? I know he’s not been playing so hot this year so I would think that a good time to upgrade would be now and protect that huge investment in Stafford.

I think you guys are on your way. I really like what I’ve seen in Velma, and if you go defense with the first round it’ll be scary no matter who you get. A secondary of Velma and Berry would be insane. Suh would be insane too.

I’ve also been very impressed with Stafford. That Cleveland game won him a bunch of fans. Is he liked by Lions fans?

The other question I have for you is why it seems like your team can only put together one good half of football per game. Most of the time it seems like it’s the first half that you play great and then the second half happens. Last week it was just the opposite. If you could string together two great halves of football you’d be set. :-)

I just think you guys are on the right track and have some pretty good pieces there.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 24, 2009 1:43 AM PST up reply actions

I think the two halves thing

comes from having essentially a brand new team working together, since what, 31 of the starting 53 are brand new? And it might be more, as the injured reserve list has around a dozen Lions on it. Some of these guys are literally playing with less than a month of actually playing with the other guys, which leads to breakdowns and missed formations.

by NobodySpecial on Dec 24, 2009 1:50 AM PST up reply actions

Backus is signed to a big contract through 2012

So unless the uncapped year gives us a chance to cut him, here he stays. The coaching staff also favors continuity. Our LT/C/RG/RT have stayed the same this year when healthy. In addition, some film study suggests that LG (and maybe RT) have been where most of our sacks have come from. Maybe Backus is playing ok…..this year.

Update: I just read that RT Gosder Cherilus may be a healthy benching for this game. He’s had a worse year this year.

A lot of guys injured, a lot of waiver pickups on the DL and secondary……lots of new faces with little time together, and worst of all, many of them have no talent. Schwartz had this scathing comment the day after the 48-3 loss to the Ravens:

"There is a significant portion of our roster that’s on our roster because they were castoffs from other teams," Schwartz said. "There were teams that didn’t want them or let them go, or stuff like that, and we need to make sure, or the players need to make sure, that they’re not in the same position this year with us."

Lions only play hard for a half? Yes, we Lions fans have noticed that only too well. It baffles us too. Short story, they give up at halftime. That’s amazingly an improvement; last year under Marinelli, it seemed like we were behind 21-0 in the 1st quarter in about half the games.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 24, 2009 2:47 AM PST up reply actions

And oh yeah, Culpepper sucks.......he played in the first half last week

Culpepper is completely worthless. He has no value. He’s washed up. Stick a fork in him, he’s done in the NFL. He gives us NO chance to win.

So naturally, we’ll probably resign him as a FA after all the other teams laugh at him.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 24, 2009 2:57 AM PST up reply actions

There is no way that Jimmy Clausen is the # 1 overall pick. Clausen may not even go in the top 10. That is the furthest possible scenario to happen. You did a nice job of trying to justify the # 1 overall pick being a QB with mosnies and all that, but all I have to do is say one name to despute that claim: Mario Williams ‘06 1st overall…and he wasn’t as good a prospect as Suh coming out. The Rams likely will persue Vick, or sign a servicable QB for a year as a stop gap and wait another year to try and get the guy they really wanted in Locker. Why would you buy a guess watch today if you could wait until tomorrow to get a Rolex?

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 24, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

No guarantees.........

Locker may be off the board by the time the Rams pick NEXT YEAR. He may get hit by a bus. The Rams may like more than one college QB on this earth (that might be especially convenient if Locker gets hit by a bus). Locking onto one guy a year in advance, and basing your draft strategy for your current #1 overall pick on that………is a recipe for disaster.

Clausen has an NFL skill set and experience in a pro-style offense. I think the Rams will evaluate him and decide he’s more worth spending #1 overall money on than the alternatives (could be $80 million; Stafford’s was $72 million).

I think Clausen will go #1. You think no way, maybe not even top 10. Ultimately, it only matters what the Rams think. We’ll see who’s right in April.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

how is stafford being rated in his rookie season?

from those not in the lions fanbase, its seems that he’s done a good job so far and has promise, but im interested in hearing what lions fans have to say about him.

by thewhizkid on Dec 23, 2009 7:32 PM PST reply actions

Stafford is highly thought of

He’s made believers out of a lot of fans who were desperate to get Curry.

As far as actual production, he’s been about what you’d expect from a rookie QB on a bad team. More picks than TD’s, YPA down toward the bottom of the league, some poor decisionmaking. What people are really responding to is his competitive nature and desire to play, as evidenced by the Browns game. He seems to be a natural leader for the offense, and with some talent besides Megatron, the offense looks to be in good hands.

by NobodySpecial on Dec 24, 2009 1:47 AM PST up reply actions

Most of us wanted Curry on Draft Day, but Stafford won us over.......he's learning and improving, and we love him now

He makes throws nobody can. He’s learning from his mistakes. He’s smart, tough, and a great leader, too.

why does your team suck so much?

lol jk

i think we are all wondering who you will take #1 because it will affect our 2 first round picks

DREAM DRAFT:
1a. Best OT available (Bulaga/Davis/Campbell)
1b. CJ Spiller or trade down to ~20 and get an extra 2nd rounder
2. Whoever our FO likes as best CB available. Maybe Donovan Warren/Trevor Lindley.
3. BPA
4. Jordan Shipley. Maybe even 3rd round.
5-7. BPA

Matt Millen

8 years of the worst GM in the history of professional sports. 31-84 in 8 years. 8 years (2001-2008) of horrible drafting. Joey Harrington. Charles Rogers. Roy Williams. Mike Williams. Of ALL the players he picked in 2002-2006, only 1 (Ernie Sims) is still on the team. Lions fans hated him so much we had a “Millen Man March” in 2005 and wore Bengals orange to a home game at Ford Field.

Now we have no talent. Schwartz has had to scrape the bottom of the waiver wire in a desperate attempt to find anything……with predictable results. Matt Millen left this team a rotting hulk. You can’t win without talent. But Schwartz already found 5 good rookie starters. Give us a few more years, and we’ll be on our way. Lions fans notoriously lack patience, but now is when patience is needed most. We’re making excellent progress now, but we’re starting from below rock bottom.

Yes (in 2001, along with C Dominic Raiola), but that's not considered an endorsement of Millen

Backus and Raiola are considered by most Lions fans to be marginally servicable, mediocre, and over paid……..at best. That’s why there are all the Okung draft rumors.

To turn this into a legitimate question...

I’d really like to know how you guys came up with your site’s name.

Now, just to make that clear, I’m not trying to pick on you, because obviously you’ve been going through hard enough times. I remember when I first started playing, all the RBs on our team wanted to be Barry Sanders (man was that guy great), so there’s actually some good memories coming up when I think about the Lions. I sure hope you guys finally have some success with your rebuilding efforts.

But assuming that POD is about as old as NN, which would be about three years, that would be a time when you’ve already had some years as perennial bottom-feeders under your belt. And I think three or four years ago was also the time when I started seeing people with paper bags over their heads at Lions’ home games.

So it just struck me as a little odd that you would name your site “Pride of Detroit” at a time when clearly pride was not the first thing many Detroiters associated with the Lions. Was it just the classic connotation of Lion <=> Pride? Was it hope for better days? Or was it maybe some self-depracating sarcasm (I like that idea)?

WR Calvin Johnson or QB Matt Stafford, take your pick

Calvin is 6-5, 240, blazingly fast, and has good hands. He’s an unstoppable beast who’s a big play threat and matchup nightmare. Until the recent improvement of TE Brandon Pettigrew, Calvin was our only offensive weapon, so his numbers are down this year.

Matt Stafford is a great QB on the rise. He has all the skills, a great arm, is learning, and has tremendous leadership and a huge heart and lots of guts. Watch this. It says it all.

Give us at least two more years

If we can get some O-line help, our offense is pretty set, but the defense is in total shambles. Right now, only four of our eleven starters on defense are starting caliber (our linebackers + Louis Delmas). The rest of them are either waiver wire pickups, rookies, or old guys with nothing left. I reckon its gonna take about two drafts to fix the O-line and the defense.

It really is pretty bad

He announced quite a few Michigan football games for ESPN (luckily I was at all of them and didn’t have to listen to the dbag), but every Monday night he’s there on ESPN again and every Thursday (and now Friday and Saturday) he is on the TV announcing. Best thing ever was when the announcers were muted for a few minutes during the 49ers/Bears game on NFL Network. About the only time I could watch a game on that channel in peace.
