San Francisco 49ers vs. Detroit Lions Open Thread
Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers, Dec 27, 2009 1:05 PM PST
Date: December 27, 2009
Time: 1:05pm PST
Location: Bill Walsh Field @ Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA
Records: 49ers (6-8) Lions (2-12)
Bodoglife.com Spread: 49ers -14; Over/Under 41; Money Line: 49ers -800, Lions +600 - If the 49ers cover the spread I'd imagine the game would go over as well. I'll take the 49ers in what hopefully will be a blowout.
Weather: 53°F, 3mph NE Wind
TV Broadcast: FOX - Dick Stockton, Charles Davis
Radio: 107.7 The Bone, 680/1050 KNBR - Ted Robinson, Gary Plummer, Rod Brooks
Spanish Radio: KIQI 1010-AM, KATD 990-AM - Mathias Godinez, Melvin Moran, Marcos Gutierrez
Lions Coverage: Pride of Detroit
Week 16 Prediction Contest: Remember that if you didn't get in your 49ers prediction you can use the wildcard game on Sunday.
Injuries
49ers: Out - CB Nate Clements (shoulder), K Joe Nedney (left hamstring); Doubtful - WR Isaac Bruce (ankle), Glen Coffee (hamstring); Probable - CB Marcus Hudson (back), RB Moran Norris (toe), RB Michael Robinson (shoulder), CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle), LB Takeo Spikes (hamstring), T Joe Staley (knee, elbow)
Lions: Out - CB Phillip Buchanon (shoulder), QB Matthew Stafford (left shoulder); Questionable - LB Vinnie Ciurcio (ankle), DT Joe Cohen (knee), LB Larry Foote (foot), S Louis Delmas (ankle), WR Dennis Northcutt (groin); Probable - DT Grady Jackson (knee), C Dominic Raiola (knee), WR Calvin Johnson (knee), LS Don Muhlbach (concussion), DE Dewayne White (toe)
The "second season" if you will, begins today. The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention so now it's all about pride and building towards next year. The 49ers are two touchdown favorites today, and it'd be nice to see them bury the Lions early. We want to see the defense shut down the Lions. We want to see Alex Smith pick apart the Lions secondary. We want to see Frank Gore run wild. There is plenty to enjoy in the game, even if it means nothing for playoff purposes.
GO NINERS!

Meanwhile
Michael Spurlock just returned a kickoff for a touchdown for Tampa Bay (who picked him up after he was released by the 49ers), and it looked really pretty too. Remember him Coach Sing? How’s that for evaluating talent, coach? You give Brandon Jones the opportunity to return kicks, and overlook Spurlock, a guy who prior to joining the team was only known for his return skills. Oh well, go Alice Smith! And go 49ers!

OKAY WE GET IT, SPURLOCK RETURNED A KICK
Now shut up. Hes not on the team anymore, so really…who cares. Quit all youre bitching.
Spurlock
no one’s really bitching about it. As a fan, it’s perfectly valid to bring stuff like this up, especially when you’re trying to evaluate Coach Singletary’s ability to put together a starting team that gives the 49ers the best chance to win a freakin’ ball game. The return game is still awful, so it’s fine to bring this up again.

Why does it seem like the Steelers always have the calls go their way?
It really is one of the unspoken crimes of the NFL. I cant think of any other team (even the pats) who gets as much love from the ref’s like the steelers
Cuz Big Ben is really great in the stall after the game
for the Refs. They enjoy it a lot. LOL

Seriously...
This is six games, by my count, out of 15 so far this season, where the 49ers have basically not shown up at the beginning of the game.
Is coaching in large part, not about preparation?

There was a whole conga line of candidates
Some of them withdrew when confronted with Singletary’s unwillingness to allow them to coach the way they wanted to.
Either way, I would bet dollars to dimes that somewhere in the coaching universe, there was an offensive coordinator who would’ve done a better job than Jimmy Raye has. Jimmy Raye has never had real success throughout his inexplicably long coaching career.
Seasons will pass you by. I get up, I get down.

When people act immature or generally like children, I have no problem with the moderators cracking down. We’re trying to make this a destination for intelligent commentary. It has nothing to do with eliminating negative comments.
by David Fucillo on Dec 27, 2009 1:46 PM PST up reply actions
this is how the site is
we like to try to have an intelligent discussion. We are fine with opposing viewpoints so long as they are presented reasonably and with class. If you don’t like the way we run it then we’d be happy to hear what we are doing that bothers you. But saying we are like nazis is exactly the kind of dissenting argument that we are trying to avoid.
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
you're missing my point
what I’m saying is that I think it’s good to have dissenting arguments – but they need to be presented in a way that fits into the guidelines that have been established for the site. If you had said “I think the moderators are sometimes a little too quick to remand people for saying negative things” I would have been fine with that, but comparing people to Nazis is not a reasoned and respectable argument
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
it’s not an argument at all.
Lott's Prayer: Almost as many words as the Lord's Prayer, but the Lord wouldn't recognize any of them.
by Nosetackle Supreme on Dec 27, 2009 2:03 PM PST up reply actions
Really
exactly the kind of dissenting argument that we are trying to avoid.
I thought i got your point clearly
ok I said that wrong
what I mean was that there’s nothing wrong with saying the mods are too strict, but to do it by comparing us to Nazis is hurting more than it is helping
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
it is only hurting your feelings
we are all adults here. i think we can handle seeing the word Nazi
yes we can handle it
but what I’m saying is that if you took a little more time to present your argument in a more constructive way, people wouldn’t get defensive and there could be a better discussion about your point
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
All im saying is quit being so sensitive
You are a grown man, start acting like it
I'm not being sensitive
I couldn’t care less if you call me a nazi. In my opinion the person that needs to start acting like a grown man is the one going around calling people names are getting upset that they are being asked to be polite and respectful
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I have never cursed on this site
I also have never been negative about my team, all I’m saying is that people have the right to and I think that we as adults can handle it
the cursing
is a site rule determined by fooch. I personally don’t really care but as a moderator I am obligated to remind people not to swear outside of gameday threads. As for being negative – I don’t think that I have told people not to be negative – I’m negative all the time
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I dont care about the rule at all
I say one little thing and I am attacked for like 20 minutes now. I have been pretty good on this site, and all i get is grief here
attacks
I don’t think wjackalope is attacking you at all. He’s trying to clarify the way things are here and has even said he’d be happy to hear what bothers you.
When you call out the moderators (or anybody on the site) you’re gonna hear about it. I just don’t think it’s been in a bad way in this string of comments.
by David Fucillo on Dec 27, 2009 2:22 PM PST up reply actions
You know what
You are right fooch, I am wrong. I am so sorry, it will never happen again!
comment
If you’re serious, certainly no problems at all. If you’re being sarcastic, well you’re entitled to that too.
by David Fucillo on Dec 27, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions
I have been a 49er fan since I was 5 years old
I just wish that there was a site where a 49er fan could go where he, or she, could say whatever they wanted. Good or bad. That is all I want. Unlucky for me that site doesn’t exist
saying whatever you want
Don’t take this as a flip comment, but why not create your own site that allows you to say whatever you want? The Internet is a wide open space with room for anybody to create their own little niche. We certainly welcome you here, but if we’re not meeting your needs, you certainly do have other options.
by David Fucillo on Dec 27, 2009 2:26 PM PST up reply actions
I'm sorry
I certainly didn’t mean to be attacking you.
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
also
I’m sorry if you feel like I, or the other moderators, have been censoring your thoughts or the thoughts of others. That is not our intention. So maybe we need to talk amongst ourselves about how to steer the conversations here in the right direction without bothering the site members
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
also
I’m not actually sure what I’ve done to earn this distinction – are you talking about how I tried to put an end to the incessant name calling and shit talking in the gameday thread last week? Or two weeks ago? whenever it was.
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
we're not censoring anyone
we are encouraging people to present their arguments intelligently
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
censorship
is not allowing people to say what they want to say. Censorship would be me banning you or deleting your comments. Moderating is asking people to say things nicely
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
I can't think of a time when I've done this

Raye makes Raye look bad
Oline makes other defenses look good.
Maybe
The QB just doesn’t inspire them enough to want to protect him?
Leadership fail?
I'm still not convinced.
Hahahahah
Even the O-line failing is Alex Smith’s fault.
Wow.
Was Schmitt’s kick being blocked also Alex’s fault?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Unlike you I'm campable of putting things into perspective
there’s something called context which you don’t seem to have.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
question
You really think the offensive line needs to be “inspired” by Smith to perform well? Not sure I buy into that.
by David Fucillo on Dec 27, 2009 2:37 PM PST up reply actions
He is still staring down routes..
and one batted ball was thrown right at the hand when it was already up. The defense can read his eyes.
Smith has no command right now, and that doesn’t help an offense as a whole.
Well, we're waiting....
Alex Smith is 16-26, 155 yards no INT’s no TD’s. He’s doing about average for me.
by Hoopers Judge on Dec 27, 2009 2:35 PM PST up reply actions
It's not a bad performance...
It’s not good performance, it’s a competent performance – it’s just the 49ers offense is not hitting on all cylinders.
except all those completions were around line of scrimmage
that is not impressive to me
If our line could block for more than 2 seconds
we might have time to get the ball further downfield.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
And he's having a much worse game
6/11 for 77 yards. O TDs 1 INT
Or is it also his fault that his O-line is bad?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Even with the scrimmage throws and checkdowns he’s on pace for 310 yards.
by Hoopers Judge on Dec 27, 2009 2:38 PM PST up reply actions
as far as i'm concerned we came into this year with largely the same roster as last and, player for player (even mark roman!) it showed marked improvement
I’m willing to give Alex Smith the benefit of the doubt to improve, staying in the same system for the first time ever, for next year.
That’s how I feel, now all you reactionary types can flame that
I concur, unless
We can draft a good QB. The year we drafted Smith, was one of the weakest QB drafts of the time. This year seems to have a lot of QB talent. But it isn’t our biggest problem.
Rodgers and Smith seemed an even match
just had to take a chance on one. IMO, Rodgers became much better in the long run, but at the time, people thought Smith would be better
New Thread Now Open
This thread took us to the end of the first half. Here’s the new game thread. Hopefully the 49ers can get their act together on offense.
