49ers 2010 Opponents - Unofficial Version

We've had questions about the 49ers opponents in 2010 popping up in a variety of threads.  We won't know the official list of opponents until this coming weekend's games are complete, but for now, here's an unofficial list.  The NFL does not provide this information to the public, or if they do, it's not particularly easy to find.  So, I've used a variety of sources (linked below) that have provided the information and confirmed each other:

49ers Home Opponents
Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys/Philadelphia Eagles*

49ers Road Opponents
Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers

The last opponent for home and road is the NFC East and NFC North team that finishes in the same position in the standings as the 49ers.  The 49ers have locked in second place with the Seahawks loss on Sunday.  The Packers are locked in at #2 in the NFC North.  In the NFC East, the Eagles hold a one-game lead over the Cowboys and they'll be facing each other this Sunday.  The Cowboys won the first game, so if they beat Philly on Sunday, the 49ers would get the Eagles at home.

Once we have an official home/road list, I'll provide my own initial, quick predictions (as useless as they are in January).  Based on a quick look at the schedule, it's certainly a mixed bag, as always.  Packers, Chargers, and Falcons on the road will be tough.  Getting the Saints and Cowboys/Eagles at home is certainly better than a kick in the pants.

I like the Schedule

Seeing as how we finished 6-2 at home this year and played close games on the road, it’s good to get Denver, New Orleans and Dallas/Philly at home. Still, this doesn’t look like a bad schedule either way. Having said that though, some of these teams could improve and make me eat my words!

I can see about 10 very winable games in there

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Dec 28, 2009 1:12 PM PST reply actions

That's why I don't predict..

A lot of people said the same thing this season.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

I said 9-7

and I’m off by one game.

This unit is much improved from last year’s unit. Couple of changes in the off-season and we’re there.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Unless this team has a total meltdown

we should beat St. Louis easily.

Is there a reason why you’re so negative towards this team?

Maybe it’s just misperception on my part but it really feels to me like you have no optimism regarding this team, which just bugs me.

Granted I’m a homer as a fan but I’d like to think that I can see where our weaknesses are but I tend to lean positive rather than negative.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 28, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

Again..

I’m not negative. I just see things how they are. You should have heard me on Xmas day watching the Lakers go soft against CLE, and the whole while cursing that overrated bench, which reminded me of the series against BOS 2 years ago.

The Lakers BTW are the NBA Champions.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

true

Fortunately that will end this season at the hands of the Celtics….again. (My dad’s from Boston so I’ve been a Celtics fan my whole life). Ok, I suppose the Cavs have a very good chance at clearing that up as well.

by David Fucillo on Dec 28, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

CLE's defense looks built..

to beat BOS because they have size, and ORL is still soft inside outside of Howard.

I still curse Gasol being soft too, and I still can’t believe the Lakers let Varajao beat them up.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

Cleveland

They do have some solid size, but a lot will depend on what goes down at the trade deadline this year. Seems like more so this year than in past years.

This is the kind of analysis..

LOL

The Rams need to be in LA. Still 10,000 butts in the seats with a 1-14 record but they have the TV market B.S. to hang onto. Not to mention the constant Pete Carol rumors.

9-7

I also predicted 9-7, although when I did it I did feel like I was kind of forcing it. After the season I’m going to do the look back at my predictions, which is always amusing.

by David Fucillo on Dec 28, 2009 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

predictions

What else will help us get our hopes up to unreasonable expectations? Throw in all the amazing additions we seem to make every year and it’s clear why we’re going to be Super Bowl contenders.

by David Fucillo on Dec 28, 2009 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

I don't go by schedule..

That would be easy with a team with an established identity. I go by where a team can get over a hump, and they still have a ways to go to be a true 10-6 team. The one area of concern is still offense. Raye’s offense’s regress in it’s second year as of late. Another is QB. The defense is on it’s pace, but that’s if Manusky still hangs around.

This sched isn’t as easy at it looks. Spags over in STL can turn his defense around if he drafts Suh.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

But you also have to look at the arc of improvement

last year we were blown out in many games. This year we’ve been blown out in two games and one of those was competitive until the 4th quarter.

Last year we were outscored by our opponents. This year it’s been reversed.

Our losses have been close and our wins big. Next year I expect at least some of those close losses to translate to wins.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 28, 2009 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

Sure..

But I would feel better if they still didn’t have question marks all over this team that still aren’t answered. The 49ers can’t count on the NFCW to be crappy every season.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

NFCW

Though with aging QB’s in both Arizona and Seattle that does bode well for us in the next few seasons.

Plus we seem to have Arizona’s number. Yeah, I’m being almost superstitious in my optimism.

Like most of the NFCW..

All teams have questions marks at QB, with the exception of Warner, who is like you say, old. It’s more about defense next season, and the 49ers have the upper hand there, yet Spags is a pretty darn good defensive guy who is just starting to build one there in STL.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 28, 2009 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

Warner will be 63 next year

they wont have all of their talent either. Their running game improving is the only thing that “scares” me. As a fan, I have to hang on to any optimism, misguided as drummer may find it, that I can.

LOL..

I don’t find optimism misguided. I just gave up that habit when it came to my Bay Area teams.

Sharks beating DET to get to the Stanley Cup? BUZZER SOUND!!

Giants getting a solid power hitter or two? BUZZER SOUND!!

49ers getting a real QB? BUZZER SOUND!!

I’m not an A’s fan, but BUZZER SOUND!!

I’m not a Warrior’s fan, but FLUSH SOUND!!

I’m not a Raiderfan, but PUKE SOUND!!

My 2 So-Cal teams have done me better than any Bay Area team, and I’m still jaded on those.

True

I’m not saying that we’re Super Bowl contenders—far from it.

I think we can be good enough to clinch NFC West (which isn’t saying much), and maybe win the first round of playoffs.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

our job as fans

is to be overly optimistic and hopeful every year. Thats what makes it so entertaining and heartbreaking every year. One more year like this and I will need anti-depressants

I will say that the new schedule does look a bit lighter though

optomistic prediction:

1 and 1 with the cardinals
sweep the seahawks
sweep the rams
beat the bucs
beat the raiders
beat the chiefs
could beat the broncos
could beat the panthers
could beat the falcons (even after the 45-10 this year)

possibly 11-5! but likely 8-8 or 9-7 again :(

DREAM DRAFT:
Trade down #12, #80 (3rd round), and #112 (4th round) to ~18 for #18, #50 (2nd), and #82 (3rd).
1b (16). Draft CJ Spiller
1b. (18). Draft best OT available.
2b. Best CB available.
2b. BPA or trade up
3. Jordan Shipley
5-7. BPA

by MichaelClutchtree on Dec 28, 2009 1:26 PM PST reply actions

i predicted 10-6 this seaon

i only got the falcons game wrong and the seahawk game wrong

49ers are the best there was the best there is and the best there ever will be

by swagger on Dec 28, 2009 1:41 PM PST reply actions

Sweep Seahawks, finally
Sweep Rams
1 and 1 with Zona

New Orleans Saints – L
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – W
Denver Broncos – W
Oakland Raiders – W
Dallas Cowboys/Philadelphia Eagles* – L
Atlanta Falcons – L
Carolina Panthers – W
Kansas City Chiefs – W
San Diego Chargers – L
Green Bay Packers – L

10-6 though 9-7 probably more likely.

You could argue some of these either way but assuming improvement on this season I think this is feasible

I always like playing the AFC West

Short road trip to SD for the team with lots of Niners red in the crowd. Plus a trip to KC to wash away the embrassment of the shutout from 2006. Let’s hope we get SD in September (when they snooze) and KC and GB before Halloween when weather could be an issue.

One never knows season to season which teams will improve (i.e. Denver, Cincy) or which become more beatable (Pitt, TEN, TB) but this schedule appears no worse than this season and likely a bit lighter on the road.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 28, 2009 2:40 PM PST reply actions

Yeah AFC West is a weak(er) division.

Chargers could have some holes next year and could be beatable. CAR on the other hand is going to be a handful. I thought they were the biggest underacheivers this year. Them and TENN.

by hudd07 on Dec 28, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

CAR

They seem to alternate winning and losing seasons.

Maybe they’ll be 12-4 again next season.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 28, 2009 4:30 PM PST up reply actions

yeah watch out

Matt Moore: 7 TD’s, 0 INT’s last few games.

Two stud RB’s, Steve Smith…The Peppers thing will have to be dealt with (he’s soooo gone) but heck, he only plays half the downs that he’s in the game anyways…

@ SD

I will definitely be at this game.
It’s only a 2 hour drive and I don’t have to pay for parking since I can just leave my car at a relative’s house and use public transportation to get to the stadium.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 28, 2009 4:32 PM PST reply actions

Same here

I’m going to the charger game cuz it’s about 1hour 30minutes from my home :) plus I might go to the raiders vs. Niners game only if it’s in San Fran though I’m not gonna go get beer thrown at me by classy raider fans. My brother is a raider fan so it should be good.

I used to live in Dana Point and San Clemente

you guys must be somewhere near there, eh?

Nope

I live in Riverside, CA. So yeah 1hour 40 min from San Diego (according to mapquest). It’s faster then that though cuz I got a Mustang GT lol. San Clemente is closer to San Diego it’s like 1hour away. I’m so used to going to Temecula because my girlfriend works there so the drive doesn’t seem long at all then from there San Diego is like 1hour away. Now I went to San Francisco twice to watch my Niners at home but that’s a killer drive like 6 1/2 hours.

by 49ersAllTheWay on Dec 29, 2009 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

This makes no sense

I know this is what Maiocco reported on, and I’m sure he went to a trusted source, but I dont see the NFL’s logic in this schedule. In 06 we played @KC and had the Raiders at home, so itd make sense that we’d play @Oak and have the chiefs at home. Same with the NFC South teams, as in 07 we had TB and NO at home and played CAR and ATL on the road.

I would prefer this way so we would not have to go to Arrowhead, especially in the winter, and playing @OAK would be like having a 9th home game.

by Rep the Bay on Dec 28, 2009 5:21 PM PST reply actions

The NFL changed the rules on playing West division teams on the road this past year. A team cannot travel to both Oakland and San Diego in a season, nor can a team travel to SF and Seattle in one season unless they belong to the conference.

by bignerd on Dec 28, 2009 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

ok thanks for clarifying

although i think the rule about not playing in OAK and SD in the same year shouldn’t apply to NFC West teams either

by Rep the Bay on Dec 28, 2009 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

I think the rule is a giant, steaming piece of crap. Traveling West is much easier than traveling East. There is a gain in time traveling West, start times mimic those of night games, weather isn’t a problem and it’s only twice a season! How many times do the 49ers travel East?!?!

by bignerd on Dec 28, 2009 7:15 PM PST up reply actions

Check out how they did it originally

Teams within a division were paired by alphabet. That’s why AZ and Saint Louis had the same home/road setup for their opponents while San Francisco and Seattle were paired. It’s the same in every division. After the Jets and Pats complained last season, the league makes it so if you go to Seattle you only have to travel to AZ and if you go to SF you also get a game in STL. It would be interesting what they would do if LA had a team.

So from now on (or until this changes again), the Niners and AZ are linked.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 29, 2009 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

Looks like a repeat of this season

If we can pick up an extra win on the road, then we can go 9-7 with that schedule, otherwise it’s going to be 8-8 again (I put hard cash on 9-7 this season, oh well).

by whatsadilfer? on Dec 28, 2009 10:43 PM PST reply actions

Wonder which game would be in London?

If it’s true that the Niners have given up a home game to come to the UK, I wonder which of those it would be? I think the original Pro Football Talk article that Fooch linked to a while back had us playing Denver at Wembley. The Bucs and Saints have already played in the Wembley game so I don’t think they would bring either of those teams back, but both Dallas and Oakland are popular here, and Oakland would make sense in terms of the jetlag being exactly the same for both teams!
