Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Golden Nuggets: Well it's far from fine...

Morning everyone. I don't know how many links I've got for you today, but I'm kind of in a hurry. I've got something about LB Ahmad Brooks, which surprises me because I figured nobody knows he exists. I think I like the potential of Diyral Briggs a lot more than Brooks, but I would like to see him get his chance (again) at rushing the passer. I want to see him as close to a starting role as the team can get him, and if that fails I want to see Briggs activated. Not that I think Briggs is the next best thing ever, but it can never hurt to try out somebody untested. Anyway, beyond that I'm not sure what I have for you today, but I'll get to posting them up. Enjoy, NN.

Here's the bit about Ahmad Brooks, who might be/is getting his chance at pass rusher. (SFGate.com)

HB Frank Gore isn't upset with the change in offensive philosophy. He is possibly giving up some carries. Actually, not possibly. He definitely is. He says the offense is fine. (SFGate.com)

Should the 49ers trade Gore? No, not under any circumstances. But Mike Sando over at ESPN has some interesting quotes from Steve Young. Remember him? I've heard Young referred to as one of the most intelligent people in football these days so... (ESPN.com)

Is anybody else (there better be) impressed with how TE Vernon Davis is emerging as a playmaker? Seriously, I absolutely wanted Davis gone last season. Call me confused. (MercuryNews.com)

Gore should still remain a key in the 49ers offense. I hope he does, I really like the guy. (49ers.com)

This is probably bad news for the 49ers, the Seahawks (rather abysmal) GM Tim Ruskell is expected to resign. No, not re-sign, I'd be celebrating. (FieldGulls.com)

Star-divide

I really hate it when this guy gets talking, I know most of us do, but he he offers some insights on the 49ers new stadium and whether or not prime time games could work in that parking situation. (MercuryNews.com)

Here's a bit of a preview of the game coming up against the Seahawks. (49ers.com)

The 49ers are no longer practicing with pads, or at least they are mixing in more practices without them. (PressDemocrat.com)

Commissioner Goodell instituted a new policy on the handling of player concussions. (PressDemocrat.com)

Tackling is once again a theme for Mike Singletary. The team tackled much better Sunday against the Jaguars, but it still needs to be better. (Yahoo.com)

Here is yesterday's edition of Singletary's Notebook. (49ers.com)

Sando takes a look at the injury situation in the NFC West. (ESPN.com)

Here's a week 13 playoff forecast, I didn't read this but it mentioned the Niners in the title, so, yeah. (Yahoo.com)

Should we start pimping

Terry Donahue? He was the greatest GM ever, the Hawks should definitely hire him…

I'd be more inclined to trade Gore sooner than later if they didn't keep with the spread.

Unless he pulls an Eric Dickerson, we can’t reasonably expect him to be the workhorse RB for that much longer with the meager backup support he gets.

What's wrong with my computer?

Many times when I click on a link the only response is gold star in red outline. Sometimes if I move the cursor elsewhere on the link it works, and sometimes if I come back to that link later, it works. Is this normal and “to be accepted.”

by CorneliusJ on Dec 3, 2009 8:57 AM PST reply actions

Three, I think.

“Vernon Davis is emerging as a playmaker” and two others. Don’t remember which, and which ever they were can’t tell because they are all working now. Except “Vernon …”

Remember another one now.

It was “getting his chance at pass rusher,” but it’s working now.

Definitely not normal.

Maybe your browser is just misinterpreting the CSS/HTML/whatever it is.

Trading Frank Gore sounds like a bad idea...

…but imagine what the Chargers could have gotten for LT a couple years ago vs. what they would get for him now.

The reality is that these RBs don’t have a very long shelf life…and with Frank’s injury history to boot, how much longer do we expect him to be really good?

Never use a big word where a diminutive alternative would suffice.

Was this a reference to...

the guy who is still hanging to Shaun Hill should be our QB?

Or an actual comment saying Kory Sheets was our future?

Never use a big word where a diminutive alternative would suffice.

Reference.

Same guy holding onto hope for Hill at one point touted that KORY SHEETS WAS OUR FUTURE!

Gore can be used effectively out of the shotgun

just have to redesign plays and work in the off-season on it. Also in the same article Young mentions that he thinks Smith can learn to throw from under center. I agree. With an off-season to re-tool the playbook and training camp to practice I don’t see any reason why Gore can’t be effective out of both shotgun and under center.

by smileyman on Dec 3, 2009 1:16 PM PST reply actions

there are really two issues here regarding Gore

Can he run effectively out of a single back formation (with two tight ends and two receivers)?
with:
1) Smith taking snaps under center
or
2) Smith in the shotgun.

Or does he need a fullnack leading him, i.e., does he need to run out of a 2 back set?

(which means one tight end…)

Which is more important, the 2nd back or where Alex gets the ball (and the possibility of play-action, etc., which diminishes with the shot-gun)?

by zacksf on Dec 3, 2009 3:39 PM PST reply actions

According to Maiocco
With Smith under center, Gore has 51 rushes for 235 yards (4.6 average)
With Smith in the shotgun, Gore has 25 rushes for 135 yards (5.4 average)

I know it’s an extremely small sample size, but so far the numbers suggest he may be okay running without a lead blocker.

when Smith is under center

any idea how often there is a single set-back (2 tight end) vs how often there is a 2 set-back formation??

by zacksf on Dec 3, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

No clue.

If I had DVR/TiVo, I would consider looking back at it, but I don’t. Maybe smileyman can help in that regard?
