Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

POLL: Aubrayo Stays. Now what?

The potential list of Free Agents at Offensive Line, Linebacker & Defensive Back is almost palpable.  The only problem?  Scott McCloughen & CO aren't the most agressive Free Agent guys.

Let's pretend you're the boss and you actually want to provide your coaching staff with the best talent available as opposed to saving money for your boss, the York family.

OL - Charlie Johnson (T), Jared Gaither (T), Winston Justice (T), Willie Colon (T), Marcus McNeill (T),  Deuce Lutui (G), Chris Kuper (G)

--- SF losing: Davis Baas, Tony Pashos

DB - Dunta Robinson (CB), Carlos Rogers (CB), Richard Marshall (CB), Leigh Bodden (CB), Ellis Hobbs (CB), Fabian Washington (CB), Atari Bigby (S), Nick Collins (S), OJ Atogwe

--- SF losing: Dre Bly, Walt Harris, Mark Roman

LB - Kirk Morrison, Shawne Merriman, Thomas Davis, Thomas Howard, Derrick Johnson

--SF losing: N/A

Keep in mind...  No one in Oakland is happy.  SD just drafted Larry English; Shawne Merriman has 4 sacks in 11 games and SD's GM is ready to shake loose of its dirty laundry.  Dunta Robinson is not playing up to expecations. Jared Gaither is going to expect LT pay but Baltimore would rather just move Oher over, cut loose and save.  Leigh Bodden (wants money) - - New England Patriots (doesn't have money).  Derrick Johnson was a first round pick a few years ago...for what its worth.. (LOL).  Carlos Rogers has great size but 2 things stand out - how bad does he want to stay in D.C. and are the owners willing to pay up for mediocre performances.  Still a talented guy.

Why No QB?!

No free agent QB’s worth noting were available. Besides, Colt "Shooter"McCoy is going to slip to the second round – I’m talking about the first.

Clausen, Bradford and Locker are the only ones who will go in the first. We have two picks in the first and neither are going to those guys when our coaching staff feels as though we can win games with Alex Smith who is also signed through 2010.

Tim Tebow has been one of the most dominant and dynamic players at his position in college football history but unfortunately, it can not and most likely will not translate to the NFL. Would I give him a chance as a 4th or 5th round pick? Sure. But we’re not talking about the 4th or 5th. We’re talking about who we would want right now, on our active roster and at or close to the top of it.

OT FA

Tyson Clabo and Jeremy Trueblood are also potential UFA (pending the CBA of course), and I’d rather have either of those two than any of the FA OTs. Clabo is a mean-streak mauling run blocker, and Trueblood is having an under-the-radar season with the Bucs. I’m starting to like the prospects of signing Trueblood more than Clabo because his contract may be more on the value side of things.

I’m all for the team drafting Eric Berry, but it will take some Crabtree like luck to get him.

Berry Lucky

I know Mock Drafts are exactly that and especially at this point in the season. Potential picks have so much time from the end of the bowl season up until the draft to make one wrong decision and have it impact their status. Add to that the evaluation process including the combine and players from no-where can jump into the 1st round slots previously projected to go to someone else.

What I truly hate about the whole process is that 40 times, bench press reps and cone drills do not necessarily translate into great football players with a mind for the game. For instance, Carlos Dunlap was a preseason Top 10 pick with all the physical tools to be a dominant DE that could fit in both a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. After getting charged with a DUI this past weekend and growing speculation about his work ethic, experts say he has slipped out of the 1st round entirely. The same was said about Percy Harvin but who is listening anyways?

Getting an offensive lineman in Free Agency is a no brainer. I absolutely agree with you that Tyson Clabo and Jeremy Trueblood, dollar for dollar are a couple of our best options. Of the available offensive linemen in next years draft, I don’t see the point in going to that position when there’s plenty of proven talent available in the open market. Getting together the best possible offensive front would be huge for our franchise and being able to get key skill position players on two of our weakest points on defense makes too much sense to actually come to fruition.

Berry is a guy that would have to make quite a plunge in order for the 49ers to be able to acquire him at 10. But, looking at Carolina’s remaining games, it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to the imagination (and odds) that they finish along with some of the worst teams in the league. After Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay (upset alert), they have one of the toughest 4 games of any team to close out the season. Minnesota, New Orleans, New York annnnnnd….. (damnit).. I don’t remember.. Either way! It could be expensive but the chances to exist…

free agents to be

i think merriman would be great. he came back from a knee injury and he will be 100 percent next year and use that draft pick on someone else. we have lot of cap room so i would also get a f/a tackle or a guard……also i would like to see daunta robinson get a offer from the 9ers. i think if we dont get merriman thaen draft someone like hughes from tcu. we will ge in great shape next season no matter what. smith will be our guy. here is a few points. culter through for 4000 yards last year, he had marshall and shannahan and a good line. now he is in a new offense no recievers , and no o-line. welcome to alex smith’s world. also to people that say smith can only throw from the gun watch a pats game and see how many times brady really throws anything past a 5 yard check down from under center. he is in a “spread offense” and operates from the gun. im not comparing smith to brady but think about it. peyton mostly passes from the gun unless it is a play-action deep ball. somethings to think about. smith will be fine with crabs getting his legs back and morgan davis and gore ohhh myyyy. we will be a force once again!!!!!!!

We need immediate help on O-Line

For that I say either get some proven talent in FA or sign the best OL’s you can in the draft, even if you have to reach a bit.

If we’re able to get an OT and OG in FA, (or maybe to G’s if Sims is playing that well by season’s end)…then we gotta get all over Berry/Haden/Pass Rush.

Returner has to come in there somewhere. I’m all for a RB who can contribute some on offense but is primarily a return man…a-la Leon or Sproles type (or drafting a Best/Spiller type) though probably later in the draft, so the latter two probably won’t be around by the time we’ve addressed our needs

McCloughan and Co aren't...

… agressive FA types? I beg to differ. Just because they didn’t go diving head first into last year’s FA scrap heap, it does not mean they aren’t willing to if the players (and prices) are right.

aggressiveness

I definitely think McCloughan and company have certainly been more than passive in their pursuit of free agents. I think a lot of people want certain players and when they don’t sign with the 49ers, it’s because of a lack of aggressiveness by football ops, and not because the player had other interests, or was not a good fit for the team.

Masa11284, why do you think football ops is not sufficiently aggressive in free agency?

Can we do both?

Get FA linemen and draft some? If we want to “dominate the trenches,” we need to get both great starters and great backups.

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

by kinglouie33 on Dec 4, 2009 2:06 PM PST reply actions

certainly...but we have other needs too...

if we got starters in FA, we’d probably target OL’s later in the draft and address DB/Pass rush in the earlier rounds.

Berry Haden!!!!!!!!

This would be a dream
FS-Berry
SS-Goldson
CB-Clements
CB-Haden

Then get a pass rusher in the second like Hughes!
This would make our blitz packages AMAZING because everyone would be covered down field. And if they got if off to the check down back he would get crushed by berry/goldson. I am going to pray for this tonight….. LOL

Then comes a trade....

Spencer/Lewis/Lawson

Give me someone great for those guys or future picks….!!!! YEE
