First 10 scripted plays for SEA

Just had an epiphany....

Imagine if the Niners run the ball 40 times and pass 20 times vs SEA the week following a 40 pass/20 run.  I just dont see how the Cardinals will be able to gameplan for the MNF game.  They would have no idea what to expect from the niners (spread or the pro/i formations)?

Star-divide

So my point is I think niners should do the following:

Play one: Spread and Pass to give the illusion that they will see more of the

Play two -ten: I formation/Pro formation & RUN THE FREAKIN BALL down their throats

Seahawks D vs Rush:

110.7 yd ppg allowed

4.3 rush yd/attempt allowed

What you think?

spread' em wide

i say leave delanie walker and davis, crabs, and morgan in the game all the time and that way you can run and spread’em out with delanie and davis. then sprinkle in some j hill. walker is a great receiver and davis has been surprising also.

Gore has had unusual success vs the Hawks

Why fix what’s not broken?

Let’s base the gameplan off Gore until it stops working. (Although I die a little inside whenever I see Morgan lining up in motion between the tackles.)

by brundylop on Dec 4, 2009 10:36 AM PST reply actions

this does not mean

that all the plays go to Gore. We’ve all seen what that has led to this season.

by brundylop on Dec 4, 2009 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

Gore ran well, and

running plays might be better on the road in a loud stadium.

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

by kinglouie33 on Dec 4, 2009 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

Raye has actually done a really good job with that

The last couple of games when we’ve had Morgan go in motion and then line up behind a tackle it hasn’t been a run play. Defenses think it is and Raye fakes ’em out.

by smileyman on Dec 4, 2009 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

enough spread talk

good offensive teams dont talk about spread offenses and all that. they do whatever it takes to spread the ball, mix in the run and throw it deep. against the seahawks last time, we mixed in the power running game. now that we can mix in throwing it deep to crabtree and davis

by pkang55 on Dec 4, 2009 11:17 AM PST reply actions

agreed

When’s the last time you heard someone say “indianapolis runs the spread offense” or new england, etc? There aren’t names for these offenses (other than the gimmicky ones the media gives them like K-Gun, Run N’ Shoot, etc).

You script plays to see what looks the defense is going to give you. Then you attack the weaknesses of those formations. When they make adjustments, you recognize it and make some of your own.

There are very few teams that tell the world they’re going to just run, run, run or pass, pass, pass and are successful at it. People think N.O. just passes…their running game is pretty darn good. New England runs the ball a lot too…to Welker.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:23 PM PST up reply actions

The Raye Gun!!!

Thats our offense… it was in the paper this morning. VD D.Walker Crabbs Morgan GoreI don’t care what you call it I am in love with that formation

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

At least we've been passing enough lately

That teams don’t just have to respect the possibility of the pass but actually game plan to stop it. Go with whats working but we CAN go to Gore without 9 men in the box now.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 4, 2009 12:51 PM PST reply actions

We pass out of the shotgun

We don’t pass well behind the center, everytime the niners are behind center the rush is coming. We haven’t done enough from behind center for our passing game to be considered a threat. Hopefully we get it together this week and surprise them. I think there will still be 8 or 9 in the box when we are under center with two WR

Me too

I have Gore in one of my leagues.

by smileyman on Dec 4, 2009 3:26 PM PST up reply actions

No I-formation please

This offense has had more negative than positive plays from that formation. It screams run and very few pass plays work from it on first or second down. I’d prefer Norris be in on as few plays as possible. Should Raye go with both Gore & Norris, I’d like to see Gore split out wide and Norris as the lone back; he could then help with protection. The formation would scream run but the setup would be pass, with Gore matched up with a LB and an extra blocker so Alex could go deep, perhaps to VD.

I do expect Gore to have a big statistical game, because he always seems to vs Seattle and because it should be a competitve game where the Niners need to run down the clock late. Either 25-30 carries with a low YPC due to no big runs but it cosumes the clock, or 20-25 carries for 125+ yards. Either version should lead to a win.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 4, 2009 1:08 PM PST reply actions

This is kind of an off-the-wall

question, but i wonder how Delanie Wlaker would compare with Norris in terms of pass-blocking in the backfield.
My guess is he would be better?

by zacksf on Dec 4, 2009 6:59 PM PST up reply actions

But

He is no other threat then a blocker. Walker can Block catch and gets great YAK

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:00 PM PST up reply actions

I'd prefer MRob

With all of the focus in the 2-2 on Davis and Walker, I think a two back combo of Gore and MRob would be very effective. Both backs can release into the flat and both walker and Davis can run deep routes. Morgan and Crabtree run short crosses.

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:01 PM PST up reply actions

Its nice that Raye finally found Walker

Now add in MRob and there are mismatch possibilities all over. Don’t forget how many deep passes MRob caught in limited action last year.

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:02 PM PST up reply actions

what is MRob's speed (40)

is he really a deep threat?

Funny thing, VD said Walker is as fast as he is, but probably not. Does anybody know how fast Walker and Robinson really are?

by zacksf on Dec 4, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

big quick and tough

also has a knack for getting 3rd downs. Makes great adjustments to the ball in the air. Usually wins 1 on 1 battles. Good football player, hope he’s around here for a while.

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

Speeeeeeed

Walker is fast check out that kick return from last year.
Mrob not so much I would think 4.6^
Mrob is a great back up, and kicks ass on Special teams

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

not sure

why were comparing walker and MRob, they are compliments

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

But

I think D walker will be used more and more. V.Davis has now arrived and everyone knows it all eyes on him, but then…. there d walker on the other side of the field. I think he has a big game this weekend

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

It may take a little

Walker is known to blow assignments from time to time. But that could be due to a lack of reps.

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

he's the perfect slip-out guy

he’s the guy who get’s lost in the play and is found uncovered, all alone. He had a few clutch plays like that last year where he was all alone.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

exactly

and with our line, we need those slip-out options. Especially when defenses start blitzing our “spread”

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

he's been a loyal 49er

doing whatever’s asked (including converting to RB/FB from QB…not often you see that). He blocks, he guns, he tackles, he catches passes, he runs short yardage…the guy is no muss, no fuss…just a football player. I respect the crap out of that

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:32 PM PST up reply actions

dont forget

he runs fake punts too… was that against the seahawks?

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

point is

if you told him to jump on a land mine to save his teammates…he’d be there before you finished your sentence

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

yeah he's a good dude

Must be that Nittany lion in him

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

well, it's the Big 10 in him

i’ll go that far. If he was from Iowa I’d say it was that though ;-)

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

Mrob for president

In the end he is a BACKUP and i wouldn’t want him to start anywhere on offense. But ya great utility player. I’m wondering what we do with him if we decide to pick up another back, because coffee is here to stay… ?

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

Coffee isn't going to see significant time soon

from the looks of it. Unless another camp changes that. I think MRob would phase out of regular offense a tad and become a special teams player. Let’s face it…he’s not a starter, maybe not even a backup on any other team. His value is in his utility, like you said.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

ran into coffee

earlier tonight. He has a cool car

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

True

I think we want a speed backup RB who can return kicks. BUT we will find a way to keep Mrob on board good leadership and Spec. T

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

future coach probably

he tries hard, knows a ton, and you know what they say…“those who cannot do, teach”. Not saying he cannot do anything…but he is such a wealth of knowledge and maybe doesn’t have the God-given talent some guys do…but sure could coach them to be great.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

It would work great but

I don’t like Robinson. He might be able to block well but cant catch and run to well, I want threats all over the field. Imagine if we could draft Jahvid Best or CJ spiller to be that kind of back! that would be amazing. But for now I would rather go with Coffee if we run the spread that way.

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:04 PM PST up reply actions

MRob can't catch or run?

Not only does he have great hands, he was an option QB in college for the #2 ranked team in the nation. He is also our best special teams gunner, and blocker.

He can also throw… trick play?

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:06 PM PST up reply actions

so can Crabtree

he was a star QB in HS (just a 3 years ago)

by mountaindew77 on Dec 5, 2009 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

we need him

lining up wide, he is our #1

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions

Another thing

Smith has said that MRob points out things to him in the backfield. Being an x QB he can help Smith make pre snap reads

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm

Not a great runner…
BUT I would love to see him used in a trick play he was a QB in college he’s gotta be able to throw still.
And Smith needs to develop himself I used to be a hater but dam Alex is showing some good stuff out there

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

very good stuff

some of his throws are really crisp.
That is excellent that MRob is helping him. I have a lot of respect for that guy. It is a very rare player that can stp-up and play emergency QB. Great athlete, great presence and football smarts.

by zacksf on Dec 4, 2009 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

When we need a big play...

I want to see Mrob or Crabbs make a big throw. Nobody would see it coming

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

SAve that for the Monday night game

That kind of trick play for a TD can break the game wide open for us.

by SpurredOn on Dec 5, 2009 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

yeah

should be “or” on the drag, and Crabtree of course

Slightly skewed

Minnesota ran over us like they do with everybody and we didn’t have Mebane…or a remotely healthy defense for week 2.

We’re better than the stats show. I’d say we’re in the 10th-15th range when healthy.

But since the Niners have been crippled with injuries (Staley is out right?) I’m a little skeptical.

Just run at Colin Cole. Instant success. He sucks.

Seahawks rush defense is ranked 6th.
Niners rush defense is ranked 4th.

However your pass defense is ranked 20th and ours is 11th.

The irony is the Seattle game might be the only game when our running game worked consistently

If you take out the two big runs, Gore still had a 3.4 avg – not spectacular, but enough to move the chains.

A lot of other games this year, Gore has popped some big runs but the average without them was really low, and honestly I don’t think that’s winning football.

So it’s actually tempting to make them prove they can stop the run. Of course, usually in repeat games the mantra is, “don’t let them beat us the same way twice” so if they’ve selling out to stop the run, it’ll be tempting to take advantage of that …

by Ronaldinho on Dec 4, 2009 5:57 PM PST reply actions

The two tight end, two receiver

and a single back (Gore) offense is an interesting one. I wonder how Gore would do running from that (with Smith under center).
Gore would be missing his lead blocker, but would have the advantage of probably going against a smaller defense because opposing teams can’t ignore Delanie Walker as a receiving threat.

Walker and Vernon Davis both block well.

by Drew Kerr on Dec 4, 2009 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

Here are some ideas, maybe crazy:

Suppose you start with 2 WR, 2 TE and Gore in the slot or as a single set-back.
You could put Walker in motion, having him end up in the backfield when the ball is snapped where he could pick up blitzes, send Gore into a pattern, (or visa versa).

or…

by zacksf on Dec 4, 2009 7:06 PM PST reply actions

We run out of a two TE set quite often

It’s actually one of our best running plays. Walker on the left side down, Davis on the right side down. Everybody shifts to block the man on the left, Davis pushes his guy to the right, Baas pulls and hits the spot between Snyder and Davis.

This was the play that Gore scored on in the Chicago game.

by smileyman on Dec 4, 2009 9:21 PM PST up reply actions

I like it

I love the fact that Walker and Davis are going to be on the feel a lot more together
That;s going to turn into a lot of mismatches for the defense
I’d like to see gore stay in the backfield to pass protect and be be the last resort peeling out into the flats.
But if walker is coming up to block that could be a great play. Send that to Jimmy

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:16 PM PST reply actions

yeah

this is a unique situation

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

Gore is excellent blitz pickup

but we have to occasionally slip him out as a receiver and more than a 2 yard checkdown. You have to have that wheel route play where there is a chip and then the back slips out and up while the rest of the routes go to the other side of the field, clearing the defense.

Look on your madden games. It’s generally called a wheel route.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

plus

not so sure that is a pass Smith can throw consistently. He seems to have better touch over the middle than toward the sideline.

by goatfather on Dec 4, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

doesn't have to be perfectly placed

because the idea is that there is either nobody covering, or a linebacker who can’t keep up. The pass can be thrown a little inside usually and the back runs under it…so long as the safety isn’t within range of an INT.

by Tre9er on Dec 4, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

Smith checks down to Gore quite often

Gore holds in the backfield for a count to help with pressure then heads out. He just needs to go out more than 2 or 3 yards to make it a really successful play.

by smileyman on Dec 4, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

Gore

does go out after he make sure of the pass protection
Those 2 or 3 yards sure do work good on the goal line though.
But i would like to see him peel out up the middle or a quick post over the middle

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 9:35 PM PST up reply actions

Give it up to Alex

I hated Alex wanted him off the team so bad. But from what he’s shown I feel like he can make all the throws. I think the biggest reason is that he is more confident than ever,

-he always had the physical talent

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 7:44 PM PST reply actions

I hope so

I don’t want to talk to soon. Buuuuut I like how he’s lookin in the spread

by GMARCH on Dec 4, 2009 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Someone, I feel that Gore is not going to go off on Sunday.

Brandon Mebane is exactly the type of menacing quick-step DT that should give the 49ers’ underperforming guards a heap of trouble when trying to run-block.

But that’s all moot because the Seahawk pass defense lets crap like Kyle Boller and Tarvaris Jackson have good statistical days so I expect Alex Smith and Michael Crabtree will have career days.
