Cardinals 30 - Vikings 17: Final nail in the coffin?

Driving-nail-coffin_medium

Last Sunday ended with most people excited about a 49ers win, a Panthers loss and a Cardinals loss.  This was the bizarro version of that day with Panther Watch taking a hit, and the 49ers playoff chances just about blown to smithereens.  The Panthers win doesn't shock many of us given how bad the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are.  I can definitely live with that.  The Cardinals win also was not exactly stunning.  I figured the Vikings might pull it out, but Arizona is a good enough team (even if the final score surprised me a bit).

In the end though, the 49ers brutal loss, coupled with the Cardinals win, has all but sunk the 49ers playoff hopes.  The 49ers now sit three games back with four games to go.  Even though one of those games is against Arizona, it would take a pretty rare collapse by the Cardinals to blow the division at this point.  The 49ers would need to win out and the Cardinals would have to lose 3 of their last 4 games (including the 49ers game) for the 49ers to win the division at 9-7.

Personally I don't think that will happen.  At the same time, I'm not going to remove all hope from my heart.  There is always a slight chance of a miracle.  Maybe it's only slight, but I suppose it's better than nothing.  So for now, I'm resigned to the 49ers fate, while still holding the faintest flicker of hope.  As I said in one of the other threads, I'm simply not ready for the offseason yet.

Even if the Cardinals don't lose out

I’d like for us to end up 9-7

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

So....

They’d have to lose to a combination of us and/or Green Bay, Detroit, St. Louis…….hmmmmm

Unfortunately
As I said in one of the other threads, I’m simply not ready for the offseason yet.

No, we still have potential blow out wins against the Lions and Rams. Plus, the Niners can play spoiler against the Eagles and Cards. There’s still plenty enough to follow the remaing 4 weeks, just none of it involves the 49ers in the playoffs.

by Andrew Davidson on Dec 6, 2009 8:50 PM PST reply actions

I think we can beat the Cards

even though they looked very good against Minnesota we seem to match up well against them. We probably lose to Philly and then beat Detroit and St. Louis

I don’t see any viable Pro running backs that would be both available and effective in a spread offense unless NO is ready to give up Reggie Bush . . . but the Saints couldn’t make Reggie Bush work in their semi-spread offense.

Maybe the kid from Cal? I don’t follow the college season. Are there any shifty RB’s that would be fit the description of a spread style RB?

for real though

what would that entail? good lateral movement and good hands? Bush is horrible laterally, almost as bad as McFadden.
I would imagine they would have to have quick lateral moves, good vision and burst, but not nec. fast?

I hate to say that Bush is a bust

because he’s been a decent back, but he’s sure not performed to his hype and that’s with the New Orleans offense.

by sleepyotter on Dec 6, 2009 9:07 PM PST reply actions

I’d take 8-8. It shows a one game improvement. The 49ers needed breaks to have a better record and they really didn’t get those this season.

They were a .500 last year. Only added one player in Crabtree and guess what, around .500 this season. There were few areas of improvement but I think countered by a slightly more difficult schedule.

Playoffs went away with today's loss

The AZ victory was the final nail, but had the Niners won even that could’ve been overcome by winning today. They’d still be two back in the division and in the WC hunt. Now? Hoping for a heartbreaking 9-7 record that leaves us out of the payoffs by one game (today) or a tie breaker, or a competitive yet frustrating 8-8 finish. They could actually finish .500 with a 5-1 division record, sweeping the team that wins the West. I’ll take the wins and continued progress by Smith, Davis, Crabtree & Richal, with a Christmas list asking for a top notch RT, kick returner, outside pass rusher and speedy nickel corner/safety.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 6, 2009 10:47 PM PST reply actions

Just a few pieces away

I think that our record is really good considering everything that has happened. Key injuries, midseason QB change, midseason philosophy change, adding a #1 WR midseason, losing 6 games by 7 points or less.

I’d say as we near the end of the season we are looking like the Green Bay Packers of last year. Putting up great stats, coming together as a team, but losing close games. They finished 6-10 and are the leaders in the wild card (assuming they win tomorrow).

I know people want to call for firings and whatnot. But give us some continuity. Let the offense go into an offseason knowing they have the same philosphy, same QB, same starters (except an o-lineman maybe). Get the defense some help, get a return man. The team will be good. For once we actually have a promising team. We have the playmakers, just need some time to gel.

by drummer on Dec 6, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

As much as I hate this comparison

As I dislike all things Raiders, but this team is reminding me of the 1999 Raiders, Gruden’s second year as HC. After their awful season of 4-12 in ’97, they went 8-8 in both ’98 and ’99, the latter of which included a bunch of close losses, primarily due to late blown leads and poor special teams (kicker for them). In ’98 they were .500 but got outscored significantly by their opponents, which was corrected the following year though they had the same record. I recall people wondering if Gruden was more than an OC and if Gannon was more than an okay journeyman QB.

The Niners are obviously heading toward an equivalent or near same record as last season, though they are clearly a better team than last year. A good draft class with continued maturing of the current young players and continuity at OC, QB and the skill positions can turn half of these close losses into wins. That’s how a team jumps from 8-8 to 12-4, as Gruden’s team did in his third season.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

How did I know you'd chime in and disagree?

Anything positive, whether based on opinion, fact, logic, statistics or the eyeball test is always going to be in disagreement with you. You revel in the negative. You probably enjoy that they lost yesterday, lest the Monday night game have real meaning.

Roll in the mud of mediocre thinking and pessimism all you want. As for your AFC West pre-2002, are you aware that in that period of time (1999 – 2004) Oakland was the only team to win a playoff game? So the West, while competitive within the division, was no strong group. Like our division. I stand by my opinion. You stand by your pessimism. No surprise on either count.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

It isn't pessimism...

For one thing, Gruden scrapped his QB’s after his first year. He had Jeff George audibling out of his plays and pissing him off. He had Donald Hollas for crying out loud. He also had Shanahan, Holmgren, Scottenhiemer in his division, which had 5 teams within it. His offense improved considerably each year, along with his defense. That was a pure Gruden team that he built with key Vets. That team trended upwards each year in one of the most competitive divisions in post cap football.

I find your post boring and rather stupid. It has no value at all here.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 7, 2009 9:13 AM PST up reply actions

Most competitive?

Yeesh, yeah, zero playoff wins for anyone other than Oakland from 1999 – 2004. Real deep division. The lone SB appearance was a down year for the AFC, when 11-5 got you homefield in the AFC but 12-4 got you a home game on bye weekend in the NFC.

Yes, you can be boring. Stupid? Likely, though I don’t care enough to name call. Everyone can see you for themselves.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

Again..

Gruden went 8-8 his first year with George and Hollas at QB.

Playing in a Division where you have 5 teams, 3 of who have hovered in or around .500 or better is different than say, being in a division where 4 struggle to get to .500.

But keep telling us how Singletary built this current team. He drafted and picked the players, and installed his own offense. You do realize you’re comparing Singletary to Gruden, don’t you?

Oops, you left out that part.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Dec 7, 2009 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

I like Gruden

But don’t view him with the reverance you do. His Raiders teams never made the SB. He then took Dungy’s team to the SB, but when required to maintain that team never won a single playoff game.

As much as he did change the culture when he arrived in Oakland, and deserves all the credit for doing so, Davis and Allen brought in the players. Perhaps, as you bring up Hollas and George, many of us fans will remember SIng’s first 14 games as having JTO and Hill.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Taking the Raiders..

to an AFC Championship to lose to a stellar defense in BAL isn’t no small thing. He may have won an SB with a Dungy team, but he beat a team he built in that same SB. Besides, I think TAM’s issues are cap ones. That doesn’t help.

As far as the JTO-Hill thingy: IIRC, George got canned because he told the Media he was injured before the team addressed it. He basically pulled himself off of the team. He also hated Gruden’s offense. I don’t see how that applies to the 49ers and Singletary.

Well, we're waiting....

We're actually a much better team than last year

Last year at week 12 we were 3 and 9. This year we’re 5 and 7. Last year we had one loss by 7 points or less (our second AZ game). This year six of our losses are by 7 points or less, with 3 of them being decided by 3 points or less.

Last year at this time we had been outscored 265 to 294. This year we’ve actually had more total points than our opponents 245 to 233 (the shutout at St. Louis dramatically effects that overall total).

I’d say that we’re definitely a much better team and right on the cusp of greatness.

Not a good Monday.

This has got to be the worst “day after” feeling I’ve had in a long time. Bad enough its a Monday but now I have nothing much to cheer about for the remainder of the season.

Yesterday’s game just about sums up the Niners season thus far. Too many close games and that they couldn’t finish.

Put out to the prairie - might as well go somewhere now

It quite possibly was the 49ers overlooking the challenge again to something in the distant future, but Seattle had the win booked in the first Qtr in my humble opinion. I can’t understand how things worked out the way they did in AZ last night too (doesnt it suck that the Cards have had the pleasure of hosting so many of those tough teams that we had to face and lose on the road to?)

Playoffs are gone now – I appreciate the optimism, but mine was back when I was drinking the kool aid with everyone else early in the season. Now SF has been run out of Deadwood cause they can’t compete with the best – they’re stuck on the desolate prairies. The only thing they can do now is make their own roads elsewhere and salvage their own record for themselves and the fans. 8-8 would be great in my opinion.

I’ve got a couple of tickets going to Philadelphia for the game – looks like a spoiler opportunity now, but at least I can share a story of how violent the Eagles fans can be if the Niners pull the upset. Wish me luck…and a prayer perhaps if you can spare one.

That Philly game should be quite an experience

Though I’ve been told the Linc is more visitor friendly (as long as you aren’t wearing the blue of either Dallas or NYG) than the Vet was. Even if the Niners lose you know it’ll be in some heartbreaking or frustrating manner, by seven or less. So the people in Philly will likely be on edge.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I STILL HAVE FAITH....

I could care less what the naysayer have to say. i still have hope and i am still proud of how this team has responded from last year. Its not like we were blown out every game like in years past. There are many things to look forward to. 1.) looks like we found our #1 QB 2.) we have an offense that looks like it will be very productive for years to come 3.) we will be in great position to get a good OL men and Pass Rusher in the draft

Looks like we aren't going anyway-- again

Leave the stadium empty. There is no reason to support losing.
