Play calling killed the niners this season...
Football is like chess, every move matters, talent is not nearly as important as mental abilities..
Mike Singletary made it clear that he was going to run first, then only pass as a last resort. This is exactly why they lost so many games. Especially trying to run with a terrible offensive line. Alex Smith is looking better than ever because he is playing in the " SHOTGUN FORMATION " which gives him time to think and react, something they should have done for Shaun Hill and Alex Smith when he was a rookie. Let me explain in perfect detail. If the defense knows you are most likely going to run, they bring more men up to the line to shut you down, this is called " Run Defense " !! Mike Singletary and Jimmy Ray ran on first and second down almost every set of downs. How much easier could they have made it for the defense to stop us ? Defense usually sets up in either a run or a pass defense on first and second downs, but almost always sets up for a pass on 3rd and 4th downs, because it is much harder to run for extra yards than it is to pass. So Singletary would run on first and second down, then after our poor offensive line failed miserably, he would have to pass on 3rd down, and the defense knew the pass was coming, so the defense knew exactly what we were doing 90 % of the time. Some ofthe worst play calling I have ever seen, this is why Shaun Hill started making mistakes, He was forced to throw on 3rd down, when the defense was in pass formation to stop him. VERY SIMPLE !!
I think MIke Singletary and Jimmy Ray should play Madden football on the Playstation in their spare time, this will show them how to be more creative in their play calling.
BRING BACK SHAUN HILL AND PUT HIM IN THE SHOTGUN FORMATION, WE WILL SEE THAT I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG,

Whatever is available. Can’t say I have preference in distribution although Fedora (free Red Hat) usually comes with the most compatible software. I’ve worked with Mandrake in school. Briefly worked with a company too dependent on Debian. Novell has a bastardized version of SUSE Linux that I hate. I’m sure IBM’s version is just as bad yet infinitely more expensive to license, not to mention to use their box you must hire an expensive IBM consultant who barely knows how to work with it. Had a friend who liked Slackware, have a copy of my own but never got into it. Apple, after two failed decades, got smart and started stealing other Linux distributions instead of trying to support and grow a version of their own. Sun had their own pseudo-Unix system I had to work with in school despite a broken compiler, I’m sure that venture is now dead. Also a few other distributions too I just cannot recall right now.
Not to mention I’m probably the only geek going to dive this much into Linux.
I've been trying..
To give myself a reason on why I keep trying to believe Linux. Basically, I want a small OS similar to OS 9 and prior, but with modern graphics support that is not dependent on anything Direct X. I like Open GL. I haven’t done much with OS X yet graphics wise. I’ve been really lazy with OS X. I’ve been busier fooling with Linux and Win 7 lately.
I just spent a whole day loading PCLinuxOS on my netbook. Wanna know what pisses me off about Linux? I tried to make my trackpad less sensitive by using the settings without terminal, and now the trackpad won’t work, and the USB mice won’t either. I was using the Gnome distro, and after install I had over 400 updates to install. Synaptic wouldn’t load it, so I went terminal. 3 hours and a six pack later, I almost tossed my netbook across the room.
There is a reason why Windows and OS X works. They have full time developers behind it.
Well, we're waiting....
BTW..
I’ve tried a lot of distro’s, from Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint, Ultimate, Puppy, Arch, etc. I even got banned from the Ubuntu forum.
I guess I’m a huge geek.
Well, we're waiting....
Linux is always behind on the friendly personal software packages/utilities/etc. Red Hat is the closest distribution to having full time developers that work and develop new software features. Yes, it frustrating that a USB mouse often fails to work with Linux, either Red Hat or their free version Fedora has the software or no one does.
I don’t use Linux for personal environments, strictly for server use (which far exceeds any other OS). There is no market for personal computing Linux so developers hardly spend time improving that area.
Thanks...
I’m really trying out Linux for the resource footprint. But I probably will go back to Win 7 for the netbook, even though Linux runs faster on it. But I might someday build a small Linux based file server\firewall. Be prepared for that day when I pick your brain on that. ; )
Well, we're waiting....
And if they have that, tell them the server's down...
it probably is anyway.

Relationship Advice
Hey guys, I’m going on that oh so critical second date this Wednesday Night. The girl and I get along famously, and I really think this connection could turn into a long term thing. Do I take her flowers, or show up empty handed? If not flowers, or empty-handed, should I take her anything?
Showing up with a bottle of wine kinda says “let’s get drunk and skip third date etiquette”.
What have you given her so far?
Chocolate of the dark variety is usually the way into a girl’s good books.

This is sage advice. However, I would recommend quoting Star Wars as often as possible. Just as long as you can do it in a context that doesn’t give away the fact that you’re quoting Star Wars.
If she is a Star Wars fan, then you’ll be in. And by “in” I mean, well… I guess that doesn’t take a lot of explanation.
And if she’s not a Star Wars fan, she’ll be none the wiser!
I don't know about that, to the groin.

then you can talk Star Wars all you want.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
A Single Rose
It says you were thinking of her, and it shouldn’t be seen as going overboard in an attempt to impress. A huge bouquet flowers can sometimes do that, also she might feel obligated to carry the flowers around all night and that could get in the way, were as the single rose she may want to carry around all night and would remind her of your gesture all night.
11-5... So I was overly Optimistic! Maybe Next year!
Roses bring trouble
What color would you get her?
Red? Too serious!
White? Tells her you only want to be friends!
Yellow? Tells her you threw up on her white rose!
Dyed Navy? Tells her that your love is fake!
Bad news all around…
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Got to be the wine
Flowers sets a dangerous precedent. If you do think it could go long-term, you’re effectively signalling your willingness to buy flowers for her, and you don’t want to be doing that for the rest of your life. Wine, on the other hand, has a direct benefit to you, in as much as you get to drink half of it, and if you get less than half, that can end up being a good thing too …
"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...
Why not floweres at an unexpected time is always kudos.
Wine will do exactly what you said about 3rd date etiquette. A flower or flowers will tempt her to go to third date etiquette

Well everyone has put in their 2 cents
But I think it really depends on where you’re taking her.
If you’re going to have dinner at her house then you’ll be better off with a box of chocolates or some kind of centerpiece.
If you’re going to go out to a restaurant you’d be better off with a single flower (like the ones she can put in her hair and stuff).
Ultimately it will all come down to the type of girl it is.
I know some girls that hate it when guys buy them certain things, while others love it when we give them stuffed animals, and what not.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Dec 7, 2009 11:28 AM PST up reply actions
Personally, and it might be because I'm young (in my early 20s),
I would just show up empty-handed. I think showing up with chocolate or flowers is a bit outdated. Seems kind of tacky to me and if I was a girl and you showed up with either, I would think you don’t date much and saw this on TV thinking it’s what you’re supposed to do.
Now if you really like this girl and simply want to get her something, then by all means, do it. But get her something that is unique to her, something she’s mentioned she likes or wants.
When I have questions like this, I usually just ask my girl friends. They know a lot better than some strangers on a message board.

Sadly I had more advice on Linux
Buying stuff never seemed to matter on early dates. My advice, pre-set the agenda for the date to show her you are man and can take care of things. Show up on time, listen to whatever she has to say while always seeming interested. Compliment, compliment, compliment and never say anything to the effect of "you seem like the type . . . ".
+1
My advice, pre-set the agenda for the date to show her you are man and can take care of things.
I’ve found this to generally be very good advice. It’s not necessary a dealbreaker but I know girls who can’t stand it when guys are indecisive or ask them to choose the activity/restaurant. Just pick something and be confident about it. Of course, be flexible and ready with a plan B if the situation calls for it.
"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

Completely agree
Set the agenda until you’re pretty established in your relationship.
Alternatively you can have her choose between option A and option B—that way she can feel like she’s somewhat in charge.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
+10
That is absolutely great advice. Remember to be a man. Take her to the place you want to take her.
If she was cooking, I wouldn’t show up empty-handed (wine is good, chocolates or flowers won’t hurt) but if you’re going somewhere, unneccessary – and maybe even slightly counterproductive, IMO.
Lots of casual physical contact! Touch the small of her back, or touch her knee if you’re sitting next to her. Oh – if you’re sitting at a table at a restaurant, and it’s possible, sit at adgacent sides – not across the table from each other. (This facilitates minor contact as well). If you’re in a booth sit on the SAME SIDE.
Walking somewhere together? Walk on the outside. Unless there are bums against the buildings, then walk between her and the bums. Feel free to be ridiculously obvious about moving her to the side of the sidewalk you want her on.
Focus on making her laugh, and don’t forget to be playful with her. It’s okay to get all starry-eyed, but the one area where you should let her lead is in talking about your feelings for each other.
And if you haven’t kissed her yet, don’t wait until the end of the date to do so. Create a moment to do it!
Wow, this is more advice that I meant to give when I started typing. :)

Be careful who you're protecting her from when you walk between her and the bums
I like to think of Jesus like a dirty old bum. He’s comin’ up to me, and I’m ‘bout to sock him one, cause, you know, he’s a dirty old bum, but then I say, "Wait a minute, there’s something… I don’t know, special about this guy.

excellent advice
and date 1 followed those guidelines almost to a tee. We were walking along the Detroit River (how typical) and I walked closest to the water because she has an H20 phobia.
I made her laugh all evening, it’s one of the stronger parts of my “game”.
Date 2 is at her place, I’m giving her home court advantage. The only reason I’ve given her so much control in the “what do we do” department is because her schedule is a lot crazier than mine. The first time I made all the plans, she had to cancel due to an emergency. I said to her, look I’d love to tell you what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it, but your schedule won’t let me. I’m afraid you’re going to do the major plans for the next few dates. She liked it, because I established leadership and let her know I’m the man in future scenarios. Then I chest bumped myself and pointed to the sky.

What do you guys think about this Chili recipe?..
1/3 Cup of Olive Oil
5 pounds of stew meat – make sure the pieces are ½ to ¼ inch size (got a nice pack of USDA Choice from Costco)
1 pound of pork sausage
3 large onions chopped
6 cloves of garlic minced
5-6 large dried New Mexico Chilies (pods)
1 small can of tomato paste
1 can of tomato soup
1 tsp of cayenne pepper
2 tsp oregano
2 TS of dried cumin
2 bay leaves
½ tsp of black pepper
2 tsp of salt
13 oz of beef broth
36 oz of good amber beer (I used Fat Tire)
1 shot of Jack Daniels
34 oz of beans (optional – I used dark kidney beans)
Rehydrate the chilis in 12 oz of beer. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 min. Strain and then puree the chilis. Set aside.
In a large stock pot heat the oil. Add the onions and cook over med heat for 5 min. Uncover and bring the heat to high and brown for another 5 min. Add the garlic and cook another for 1-2 min until fragrant. Add the cumin and add the pork. Stir until the meat browns. Add the beef, oregano, salt, pepper, cayenne and brown until most of the redness is gone. Add the chili puree, 24 oz beer, Jack, beef broth, tomato paste, tomato soup and bay leaves. Bring to a boil. Then simmer for 1-1/2 hours until it has a chili like consistency. Then add beans and cook another ½ hour.
You can substitute 28 oz of canned plum tomatoes with the juice for the tomato paste and soup.
Another short cut is to use chili powder instead of rehydrating the dried chili’s – 5 TB to ½ cup of chili powder should do it.
Since the meat is chopped already it is only about 30 min prep time. 2 hour cook time.
Garnish with green onion and cheese.
I might try this out later this week. Anybody got some other recipes for Chili?

you're right about one thing
the playcalling has been questionable. they finally started using more variety and not running the ball up the middle all the time, but now they’ve gone to a pass-only offense and are one-dimensional again. they need to mix things up more. also, yesterday they had a few third and 3-4 yard situations where i thought a run or short pass would be really smart because what you really need is a first down, and instead they took shots deep and ended up with incomplete passes and had to punt or whatever. one was in the red zone when they threw that pass to crabs in the endzone that got there too early, and the other was on the last possession when we went 3 and out.

Back to the Niners tho, given our ineptitude this season in “special” teams (and I know Fooch dedicated a post to it), I’m surprised more of these types of complaints (or pearls of wisdom) aren’t obviously pointed there. Yesterday was certainly not the first time we’ve turned it over on special teams, and had it not been for our special teams and some extremely questionable officiating (especially in the 1st Q), that game was played adequately by both the Offense and the D (big props to the D line, getting pressure all day).

I think MIke Singletary and Jimmy Ray should play Madden football on the Playstation in their spare time, this will show them how to be more creative in their play calling.
Given they’re each kinda throwback type-o-guys… maybe Sing and Raye should take some tips from tecmo superbowl instead of Madden, where if you ran the kickoffs down the sideline with a fast enough guy, you couldn’t be stopped, that would cure our return game right there. I wouldn’t worry about him going anywhere for now.

Ok here it is:
Organic Pecan Pie
I know organic may sound kinda fruity, but trust me it will make a difference.
All these ingredients are available at any "whole foods" type store:
1 cup organic dark corn syrup
3 organic eggs from range free chickens
1 cup brown organic sugar
2 tablespoons organic butter, melted
1 teaspoon organic vanilla extract
1 cinnamon stick freshly grated
1 nutmeg freshly grated
2 cups organic pecans
1 (9-inch) frozen organic deep-dish pie crust
1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.Mix first seven items in a bowl until they are of uniform consistency using a spoon. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into frozen pie crust. Don’t thaw the crust! Go straight from freezer to pouring to pre-heated oven. Also make sure your oven is level so the filling doesn’t run out one side.
3. Bake on center rack of oven for 55 to 65 minutes, I always rotate it at least once for even cooking.
4. Let pie cool slowly on counter for at least 2 hours.
I use the tooth pick test for when the pie is done (tooth pick comes out clean), but you can also check temperature 200 degrees internally is what you are looking for. Some people like their pecan pie a little runny others don’t. You can really thicken up your pie by subtracting about 1/8 cup of the corn syrup.
Enjoy, and don’t forget it’s only about a million calories a slice.

I want winners! I want people that WANT to win!
Not me, but I kind of wanted to try it
I’m the kind of person that buys video games a year late.
They’re like $40 cheaper that way.
I was going to buy the original Assassin’s Creed but I heard it sucked.
Didn’t Patrick Willis help develop it or something?

I'll (likely) be getting it for Christmas
yeah, I still ask for PS3 games for Christmas. Demon’s Souls is another one I’ll be getting, and I’m looking forward to it. Word on the street is that it’s one of the toughest games ever.

Niners have finally improved
It seems like a decade has past since i have last felt that the team had a shot at winning every time they are on the field. Finally they seem to have improved. I am disappointed this year has seen fallen towards mediocrity. More importantly i believe the organization has solidified and already have key parts needed to produce championship football. The talent has finally revealed itself, the coaching is steady and proactive. Next year the 49ers could have a self realization of how good they could be and it could result in winning 11 or more games.
Until then i look forward to the play calling having balance once again and aggressive pass offense. We have to draft Lineman with almost every pick Defense and Offense.
J GO
the play calling
also has put the team into position to win BUT the players aren’t taking advantage. what about all the choke jobs this season. don’t get me wrong there has been questionable plays called but the players themselves havent helped, when giving a chance to take advantage. just as much as the play calling has costed us the players themselves have costed us wins this season. hopefully this years experience will come in handy next year & it’ll get us over the hump & a start back to the dynasty days. we have the team to do it. this team has proven they can play with n-e-team if they’re on their A game.
go niners!!! airday allday
