NATE "THE GREAT" TIME ?

I feel we pretty much know what Theother two  Qbs on the 49ers roster can or cant do by now. Give Nate Davis a chance to showcase his skill in the last couple of games. Let say against  Lions or the Rams something to get if feet wet. I know the 49ers are not completly out of the playoffs yet, but soon as it happens if it happens we need to start looking towards the furture and give the young player that we feel is going to be a part of the 49ers furture some real game  time experince.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Agreed

If we are out the playoffs, he should get some playing time. We need to make some FA and Draft changes. The culture has changed. But now we need game changers on offense and defense. This is the nature of the beast. If you cannot perform at a high level you are taking space. I want to be in the playoffs, but not just to lose as a wildcard/first round.

Let's get the division!

We just 2 or 3 game changers from being the champs again. but Im tried of us losing game we should have won, close heartbreaker and it looked like at the end of the game Coach Mike was about to sock the cheating as ref. Man Im so mad all I can do is smile

1 more lose, lets see what nate can do

I Know a winner when I see one The kid is raw and what i like about him is he reminds me of joe montana a little. He is smooth and when he throw the ball to WRs they get RAC = Run after the catch. Alex is coming alone but it something about him that i just dont like. A real Qb makes his team better and that what nate davis will do given a chance.Coach Mike Sing have mad alot of mistake all year like we should have kept Sheets and been put J.hill in and why he let Allen.R go if we didnt have someone to replace him that plain stupid. but you get a chance to make it right if we lose one more game put nate davis in and you will be the coach for a long time because will be winning.

I see no reason to get Nate in there

Smith needs as much time as possible to hone his skills and get more and more chemistry with receivers. Plus we need to be absolutely sure he’s the long term answer and letting him finish the season is the best way to get an indication on that.

If Smith tanks 2 or 3 games in a row and throws all kinds of INT’s, fumbles, etc…then maybe we use Nate in the last game or two…

If Smith seems to be the answer, we don’t need to see what Nate has until his time to start draws nearer

He is throwing picks

You saw the Tenn game right? I am all for 2nd chances but we have a new coach and he did draft a Qb and has shown to make those around him better. Alex Smith is doing okay, but we want awesome and that is what Nate Davis brought during the preseason. Plus, we CANNOT play shotgun the rest of the season and expect to make the playoffs. Not going to work.

Let's get the division!

by chriscream on Dec 7, 2009 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

Nate Davis will not bring us awesome.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 7, 2009 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

You might have noticed that Smith hasn't thrown any picks in his last two games.

Since we lost yesterday’s game primarily on account of drops by the receivers, it strikes me as the height of stupidity to make any conlusions about the viability of the shotgun based on it.

by Ronaldinho on Dec 7, 2009 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

let me explain

Nate Davis generated so much a buzz, that he was going to be put on the practice squad. The buzz on him from preseason and his playmaking WON him the 3rd string QB. Now Coach Sing watch Alex Smith for a while now and he knows the good and the bad about alex smith. Alex Smith is improving (a lot) but he has to win those close games. He has to keep drives going. That was a critical 3rd down and he has to make those plays. We cannot be content with a QB that just does not have that it factor. The next two games should show us if he the one to lead the Niners next year. They are must wins and hopefully keep us in the playoff hunt. If he cannot produce quality wins, you can best believe we will draft or see if Nate Davis can compete for the starting job. And that my friend will be awesome.

Let's get the division!

I do not agree...

Alex Smith has proven that he can put up really solid QB numbers. We need to know that he can do it consistently. If he can finish out the season and continue to perform at the current level, I am ready to consider him our starter and move on. He could be up for comeback player of the year honors (of course VY has been pretty good as well). We don’t need a QB controversy heading into next season. If Nate is that good, he will get his shot.

Hey, remember that one time when we were arguing and I was wrong? Yeah, me either.

Yesterday, the Niners lost a fumble on a punt return deep in their own territory, and lost a fumble at the end of a very nice drive. That’s why they lost.

Alex Smith threw accurately. He threw hard to get balls into tight spots. He made good decisions. He didn’t turn the ball over. He was decisive. He knew when to get out of the pocket.

Don’t look at the bogus 3rd-down conversion stat — too many drops and 3rd-and-longs to be meaningful.

Don’t look at the bogus “Alex iz 2-4!!!” stat — he’s not the reason they lost.

Look at what makes a QB good: accuracy, decision-making, arm strength, execution. In which of those areas was Smith lacking yesterday? Don’t look at stats.

If you want to focus on two plays at the end of the game because you think it proves that Smith doesn’t know how to win, fine. That’s not smart evaluation, though, especially considering that Smith drove down the field with less than five minutes left and threw two go-ahead TD passes that weren’t caught. If he really had problems with the game on the line, he wouldn’t have gotten the Niners that far.

by Grant Brisbee on Dec 7, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions

Controversy is good at QB

We had that when Alex Smith took over the Houston game. If teams can make it with rookie QB and we have one that just need one year to watch. Well guess what? Let the games begin. I am leaning toward drafting another QB if it means 3 more wins. Depending on who we get from free agency I am hoping for a solid OL so we can draft 1 and focus on a game changer.

Let's get the division!

by chriscream on Dec 7, 2009 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

Contraversy is never good at QB

That’s why the teams that don’t have one are succesful teams. When you have contraversy or a competition, it takes away form reps with one unit and the continuity between the offensive unit.

I actually disagree. I think that Smith is showing enough right now to warrant the idea that he should be starting next season. And if we can give him the last 4 games to make that determination even more definite, I think we have to. I don’t think there’s any reason to expect Nate Davis to be ready, and I don’t know that there’s any reason to expect that dicking around with our quarterbacks even more right now by reducing the number of snaps we have to evaluate Smith and playing a guy who is a longshot at best is in any way going to help this team in either the long or the short term.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 7, 2009 8:21 AM PST reply actions   2 recs

I agree

Smith is actually looking good, so the team may as well just go ahead and evaluate him the rest of the way. Starting Nate against St. Louis can do no harm, so I’d also be up for that. These next two games vs. ARI and @ PHI are going to tell us a lot about Alex Smith’s future as the 49ers starting QB.

Perhaps if Smith shows enough in the next two games to concrete himself as the 2010 starter, Nate can get mop-up duty versus the Leos and Lambs just so we know where he’s at (but then again, it won’t matter where he’s at if Smith is the 2010 starter).

I agree 100%

Smith has shown an incredible amount of growth. He’s very clearly not the player he was three years ago.

Yesterday he got over 300 yards, 6.9 average, no picks, with very little help from his receivers and none from the running game. And people are talking about wanting to bench him in favor of Nate?

That is insane!

Alex Smith is answering every question people throw at him. He has shown, clearly, barring a major meltdown, that he deserves to be our QB going into next year.

by Ronaldinho on Dec 7, 2009 2:24 PM PST up reply actions

Clearly, everybody is just listing to Murph and Mac in the morning. Because those guys HATE THE HECK OUT OF Alex Smith almost every morning.

Here’s an excerpt from this morning, “Yeah, Alex Smith threw for 300 yards with two TDs and no INTs, while leading multiple drives that could have put the game away if not for missed calls and fumbles, not to mention there was that fumble on special teams and a defense that gave away a field goal with stupid penalties at the end of the game, but the team lost, so obviously Alex Smith doesn’t have that je ne sais quois that makes a quarterback not completely suck. He’s terrible! I mean look at it. He’s awful!”

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 7, 2009 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

It couldn’t have possibly been Vernon Davis’ fault for letting a pass go directly through his hands hitting him in the face mask or Crabtree’s for dodging that invisible wrecking ball coming his way. Or multiple WR’s dropping passes thrown on the mark all day long.

This is quite ridiculous

Fooch my hats off to you I would be deleting this (Site decorum) as soon as he or KSWOF posts. Furthermore, we need to be concerned about what we are gonna do with Hill. Is he our backup for the future or will we take a late round QB? Davis needs to do what he did last week, ride the pine, we need to get a full assessment of our offense going forward, despite it beinf for 2010. No contraversy and one QB getting reps in the OTA’s and training camp will be helpful. Another year in the same system whether Mike J is promoted to play calling duties or Raye continues with more influence from SIngletary. I think this one draft can give us all we need to compete for the West and more next season, of course with a little luck and some great picks we can be a shocker next season.

But I wish this bogus fan post crap would stop. Oh Madden this Madden that, yeah it’s a game that can be manipulated. Crabtree has 143 rec. 2100 yds and 41 td’s on my online franchise and I didn’t play the first six games, so there is no stock in Madden, go easy on the Kool Aid and Chips this is a real sport we are talking about.

The offense has really shown something in the last few games, but one thing I’ve noticed is the lack of home run plays. I agree

I don’t want to beat a dead horse but our homerun threat doesn’t play in the game (J Hill). We have too many WR’s and none of them have game breaking speed and that’s what gets you downfield unless it is by design.

You think it’s a lack of speed that leaves us without the home run threat? What about when Ashley Lelie was on the team? Home run threat guy, I don’t think he ever caught a long bomb for a touchdown.

If Kory Sheets is so great why hasn’t Miami utilized him in the run game or in the return game? Or does Bill Parcells not get it either?

I just belive that Alex Smith is not the best Qb on our roster. We have givin him all the chances a QB should get. His job is not in danger. I believe my own opinion when it’s properly weighted by stats, the things I have seen, the things I have read, and the various opinions of a large group of knowledgeable individuals.

Never base your opinion on one man’s word. I’ll watch the games. I’ll look at the stats. I’ll take what I can from those two things. And then I’ll see what LOTS of other smart people are saying to see if there is some factor I ignored in my original assessment.

Give him a chance

I say we throw him in the last game. I’m a big fan of Nate. But I can’t act like smith isn’t stepping up his game. He’s getting better every week so lets see what he can do in the next 2-3 games. Then with the last games against STL and DET lets see what talent we have hiding on our dept charts…

by GMARCH on Dec 7, 2009 11:14 AM PST reply actions

Nope

Alex Smith just threw for 310 yards, his WR’s were dropping passes thrown right on the money, he should have had 3 TD passes and a win but Vernon Davis dropped a TD (possibly game winning) and Crabtree ducked like a wrecking ball was coming at his face which could have been another.

Smith is finally showing he is capable of fulfilling the 1st round pick that was spent on him. Singeltary is not going to go with Nate Davis, so all the Nate “The never great” Davis talk may as well stop right here at this very post. It just is not going to happen.

by LongLiveLangerhans on Dec 7, 2009 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

In some societies old age is respected.

That’s really not very polite. Disagreeing is polite, but making fun of a person’s age is at best borderline rude. And I have some very bad new for you. In the big view of the things, if you consider that age of the universe and the future of the universe, then the difference between the ages of you and your generation and us old guys in infinitesimal. We are almost the same age.

by CorneliusJ on Dec 7, 2009 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

Well, allow me to be polite and disagree with you.

Personally, I think age is a terrible factor to consider in determining who deserves respect and who does not. Like you said, in the grand scheme of things, we’re almost the same age. No, I don’t respect people simply because they’ve managed to live longer than I have. I respect people who have demonstrated to me that they deserve my respect. I start with a presumption that every person deserves my respect, but if they do something to rebut that presumption, then they have to show me something positive to win it back. Age has virtually nothing to do with it and I’m thankful the current culture agrees.

And as for making fun of kezarvet’s age, I "LOL"ed because I think Drew K was making reference to how kezarvet tends to bring up his age (having watched the 49ers since their time playing at Kezar Stadium) as a way of demonstrating he’s much more knowledgeable than the rest of us young un’s. I think the joke was mimicking kezarvet’s tendency to constantly remind everyone that he’s much older than the rest of us. I took it to be a sarcastic nod to that. And if you look at it that way, it’s kezarvet who is discriminating by age.

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

by LongLiveLangerhans on Dec 7, 2009 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry if I was offensive,

That was not my intent. I have only recently accepted the fact that I am farther than I care to be on the down hill side of life. And it irritate me a little when some one mocks me or anyone for having reached retirement age. I did not think that the comments by you, smileyman, and Drew K were mean, but once those kidding kind of comments get started they sometimes go too far. I was really just trying to head it off before that happened. Peace!

by CorneliusJ on Dec 7, 2009 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

You're missing the whole point

niner18 is writing like he’s 12 or 13. Kezarvet is definitely old enough to be his grandfather if so.

The great grandson comment was more a comment on niner18’s perceived immaturity than a knock on kezarvet.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 7, 2009 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

After thinking it over:

I think what bothers me is not who gets respect, but who gets disrespect. I’m sure you are aware that some in our society are very disrespectful to seniors because … who knows why! Where this has really hurt some is with financial scams. Seniors are often targets because their brain has slowed considerably.

I did not intend to imply that any one in NN was actively disrespecting seniors in any sense. I just wrote before it was clear in my mind what was bothering me. I am guilty of engaging my mouth (keyboard) while my brain was still in neutral.

The argument you are making is that

even those who DIDN"T fight in the war, maybe those who stayed home and robbed banks or those who sold secrets to the Japanese or Germans, are also deserving of respect, simply because they are not dead today.

I’m saying that those who deserve respect EARNED it because of good things they have done. You’re saying age alone matters.

I read that on the Crabtree throw

He is the 3rd string QB, so it’s completely out of the realm of thinking there. If he was good enough and showed that much upside, he would have been bumped up to 2nd string during the season. Singletary is not going to disrespect Shaun Hill like that. Not after how hard Hill fought for the team. If he is moved to 2nd string, it would not come until the offseason or preseason of next year

lets be real here guys, the organization wants smith to finish the season but I have a feeling they might elevate Nate to the 45 on game day and he might might get some clean up duty against the rams, that about it, he will most likely be a back-up for the next few years, but I really like the Qb’s, Alex is showing some great skills and Nate has some talent, i think we should be happy with smith starting and everyone should real get off his ass, its sad to see so many people want a rookie to star instead of him when he made some good play’s and put us in a position to win the game, if it wasn’t for Davis drop in end zone

This Is A Joke

What has Alex Smith done to warrant a benching? Absolutely nothing. We need to keep him in to get chemistry with the receivers and grasp this new offense for the 2010 season. He will be our starting QB in 2010!!!

QB 1- 61.8 Comp % 1577 Yards 13TD/7INT 86.7 Rating 242 YPG

QB 2- 61.3 Comp % 2172 Yards 13TD/7INT 83.6 Rating 228 YPG

QB 3- 61.0 Comp % 2427 Yards 16TD/7INT 92.2 Rating 242 YPG

QB 4- 59.4 Comp % 2924 Yards 20TD/11INT 87.2 Rating 243 YPG

QB 5- 59.4 Comp % 2291 Yards 16TD/12INT 80.0 Rating 229 YPG

QB 6- 60.8 Comp % 2547 Yards 16TD/10INT 85.0 Rating 212 YPG

In case you were wonder

1= Alex Smith 2= Matt Hasselbeck 3= Donovan Mcnabb 4= Eli Manning
5= Matt Ryan 6= Carson Palmer

Don’t tell me your not excited to see him in that class of QB’s. Among these players Smith is #1 in comp %, #2 in yards per game, #2 in TD/INT ratio and #2 in QB rating. And now some are calling on him to be benched?
