Mike Singletary Monday lunch press conference: Seahawks edition

Mike Singletary is back at 11:45 for his customary morning after press conference at 49ers headquarters.  I don't know how you can gloss up yesterday's loss too much.  I'm curious to see what positives we hear from Coach Singletary.  While he talks about fighting on and moving forward, I don't think he's one to ignore the magnitude of yesterday's loss.

So I guess we'll see what he has to say.  For those who miss the press conference, I'll have the transcript posted later today.

Singletary - pleased with Smith's performance

Says he’s making the right decisions, throwing accurately.

“Has the team disappointed you?”
- “No. These are a special group of guys. We just have to find a way to win.”

They are people

But they’re paid to not make it about them. Some guys fail big time in that regard, especially in the NBA. Maybe it’s all the face time they get and we fans end up knowing their names and officiating tendencies.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Yep

But they’re worse in the NBA. Joey T. Crawford. Bennett Salvatore. I know more about their different officiating styles and temperment than I do many of the players.

You Can't Put All The Blame On The Refs

But like the Minnesota game they are partially to blame. First not calling PI when Walker was being molested in the end zone, i mean the ref was right in position to make the call. Then holding penalty on the final drive. Didn’t the Seattle WR push off on the defender first? And isn’t that what cause the defender to hold in order to regain position after the initial offensive PI? They seriously blew a lot of calls in the game. But in the end you must execute in order to win and the 49ers didn’t.

"Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can't do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win!!!"

by nocal81(Vincent) on Dec 7, 2009 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

Glad he didn't apologize for the final series on offense

Though I would’ve been more conservative, it’s not a right or wrong thing. It’s a philopsophy. You go with what you think is best and if it works, it was correct. If it fails, you were too (fill in the blank: conservative, aggressive, playing to lose, etc). No point in publicly second guessing your play caller.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 12:10 PM PST reply actions

3rd and 3

0:39 left in the game. Ball on SF 18 yard line.

At this point…you have to be a realist. You’re probably not gonna drive down the field…and if you in fact don’t…you’re giving the ball to Seattle with their timeouts in tact, in decent field position, with time for a few big plays…something your defense has had trouble defending.

The odds just weren’t in favor of a deep pass there. Run the ball, eat some time, make them use a timeout, and punt.

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

YEP

This was a situation where it was warranted to at least not play to lose!

by Mangoman1 on Dec 7, 2009 12:28 PM PST up reply actions

If that's your philosophy

It has to always be your philosophy within the same game. Switching back in forth in the same game gets you beat more often than sticking to one plan.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

One problem

If we run on that 3rd down, Seattle uses one of their two timeouts. They ended the game with a TO remaining so nothing changes. We still lose the same way, except today everyone is blasting Sing and Raye for being too conservative and playing scared. I guarantee that some would ask, “why not let Alex throw it there? Let’s see what he can do. It’s not like we’re going to the playoffs!”

I would have run on 2nd down not 3rd. The final play wasn’t a bad call but a bad choice by Alex. Vernon was open with man coverage and all the safety help was on the right side of the field, which is why his pass was almost picked. He throws to VD, we get a first down up near or across the 40 and out of bounds. If we end up in FG range to win in regulation, everyone is patting Sing on the back for “going FTW.”

You play to win the game?

Maybe I’m wrong, but playing to win the game would have meant simply going for a first down and continuing to drive the field, as opposed to throwing a deep ball incomplete, stopping the clock, and punting to Seattle with good field position and 3 time outs.

They call their best player "Kung Fu Panda" and they complain that people aren’t taking them or the game seriously enough? -Nick

they switched to man coverage on 3rd down

Alex said they had been in softer zone on 1st and 2nd. He said there were no underneath routes open due to the change in coverage.

Audible would have been timely. Alex said he wishes he had that throw back. VD was open

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 2:24 PM PST up reply actions

"VD was open"

That’s what was wrong with the play. Not the decision by Sing. Not the call by Raye. The execution. Thus another reason we need Smith to get as many reps as possible the remainder of the season, so mistakes like this don’t happen next year. And what Sing means by the players not finishing and needing to mature.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 7, 2009 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

Middle Ground

Whatever they did, it was about getting the ball as far downfield as possible and managing the clock. I almost would have been more satisfied even if they picked up a few more yards without getting the first down & forced them to burn a timeout.

by Mangoman1 on Dec 7, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

I honestly don’t mind taking a shot in that situation. Clearly, the shot they did take was a bad one, but an obvious short yardage situation is a good time to take advantages of mismatches down the field. I like the idea behind what they were doing. Clearly, what they did was a poor execution of that idea.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Dec 7, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

thanks

I would have run on all three to be honest. I was torn because I was happy to see the aggressive approach, but I’d rather make Seattle potentially go 75+ yards than punt from inside our own 20 when they had 2 timeouts.

Plus who’s to say their mentality doesn’t change with one less time out? I think we put it in their hands to win it with a big play…and our defense has given up a lot of those (remember a guy named Favre?)

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 12:42 PM PST up reply actions

I know, hindsight

I just didn’t want to give them a chance to win.

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

that was not the usual motivational PC

that get’s me back on the side of optimism…

You know what, I don’t care as long as the coaches are working on fixing the crap that went wrong. That’s all I want to know. Cause at times, it doesn’t seem like we worked on anything we should have in practice. We have a hard enough time FIELDING a punt, let alone getting yards on the return and we try a reverse…one that no one was particularly sure we were even going to use in the game (per Singletary in PC)?!?

And someone please explain to me why we just CAN"T seem to keep a safety behind the receivers?!? We have to stop the big plays when it counts! Of course, in hindsight, I’m thinking we should have lined up 4 DB’s at the point where FG range was. Trusting single coverage on a guy you just signed from the Lion’s PS?

Grrrr!!! We should know our weaknesses by now!

Ok. I didn’t vent much yesterday so that was overdue.

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 12:29 PM PST reply actions

He was in because other guys had leg cramps

And safety help makes no difference on that route. We could’ve played a soft prevent but I think we know how that would’ve worked and been discussed.

the deep safety help has been bad all year though

we really need to address secondary in the off season…like that’s an original idea… right?

by Tre9er on Dec 7, 2009 12:49 PM PST up reply actions

I meant the Safety has no chance on that route

Sideline go-pattern. The safety has responsibilites in the middle of the field. That’s on the corner, who is only playing due to the unfortunate injury to Clements. It happens but it’s not what lost the game.

c'mon man

secondary has been putrid all year. We have no true cover corner, even Nate can’t seem to cover speed guys. Our safeties haven’t been on the tv screen on long plays…absent. Missed tackles in the secondary…

We’re young, so maybe you could argue that we need another camp to get some of this straight…but we know Bly is probably gone, so why not add a real good DB (Berry)?

I think

we’re mostly ok at corner, maybe pick up a backup for depth (plus points if he can be a return man too (go Arenas)), but we need major help at S. If we can somehow maneuver to get Berry, that’d be aces.

Yeah

Not quite unreal, but he appeared to have a damn good game against GT. But he was barely any kind of a factor against South Carolina. After the opening TD return that was basically it. It’s not gonna happen, but if he stayed until the 3rd or 4th round he would be perfect to pick up as a return man or utility man on offense.

What about scouting Utah’s or Hawaii’s RB’s? :)

Let him focus on PR a ton and only a handful of plays on Offense to start. As much as he can grasp and execute. We need a guy who’s craft is PR for a while. Once he masters that, we let him in on more of the offense.

Real men,

Take the blame.

Remember a story about Montana. A new center made a bad snap in a pre-season game or maybe just practice, and Joe said, “My fault couch.”

Joe had a rep (and probably should) for not blaming teammates, and how often does anyone remember Joe getting in a teammate’s face for dropping a pass or running the wrong rout or missing a block.

Sometimes comments are made about QB leadership (regarding AS) as if getting in someone’s face is showing leadership. Leadership can be just showing a quiet confidence in yourself and your teammates.
