restruct contracts for
Clements and Jones. Maybe Spencer but he has been playing good. I’m not saying Clements is bad, but he is playing like he should get 8+ million. Jones just sucks. Maybe even cut him. He has had one catch so far and screwed up on a punt return. Not worth 2 million a year. Snyder shouldn’t 2.5 million. He sucks. I could do the same job for less money.
Go 49ers
restructuring deals is a two-sided agreement.
I’m pretty sure Snyder, Clements and Jones are perfectly content with being grossly overpaid, and will thus have no desire to restructure their contracts. Don’t count on such a thing ever happening.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Yeah
generally people restructure deals because they have a loyalty to the team. I don’t think any of those players are particularly loyal to the Niners.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Out of that list...
… the only guy I can see with any potential loyalty would be Snyder. But even then, $2.5M isn’t that terrible for a backup tackle, even.
It's weird to talk about cap room when it will probably be an uncapped year ...
… and if it isn’t an uncapped year, that’s because a new CBA will come in which will probably lower the cap.
Also, the future cap will probably be lower. So teams need to be very careful with long-term commitments so that they’re not over a future cap.
Taking a shot in the dark here
but I think that we will have a new CBA in place by March. I think that the percentage of salary cap money stays the same (Currently it’s at 60% of revenue), but I expect the minimum to be lower. I also bet that teams will get credit for certain player related expenses.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
That gives us lots of room
I expect Baas will be resigned for another year or two. Ulbrich might be let go because o fhis medical history. Smith, Hudson, and Roman should be let go. Resign Wilhelm, Brooks, Pashos and Sims. Throw lots of money at Franklin to keep him around.
This salary cap looks good for us. We’ll be able to pay top dollar to get quality FA here.
It’s unbelievable that Snyder is making more than Staley.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
I Don't See The 49ers Re-Signing
any of their own free agents with the exception of Brooks, Franklin and maybe Wilhelm. Regarding Clements, if he is willing to take a pay cut then keep him, if not let him go.
I am not sure if the 2010 season will be uncapped or not but either way the 49ers are going to be in a great position to make major damage in free agency. with two 1st round picks and about 55 million to spend look for San Francisco to take that proverbial step to the next level.

I wish we could get something in trade for Clements
But I doubt it and there is no way he’s worth 8 M right now. Kick him to the curb if we have to.
Gimme 1 round!

No one will want to pay him that much money
He is too high priced to be decent trade value.
Probably depends on who we get in FA
If Baas resigns it won’t be for much more than we’re paying him now.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
usually you find them in fresh water

Post ideas
Jason will be posting on the front page about the salary cap once the season ends. In the meantime, anything in particular you’d like to see him post about? I’m trying to come up with ideas, but anything that interests anybody is definitely welcome.
trade clements?
is it possible/cost effective to trade him rather than cut him?
Why is Moran Norris making that much?
He’s signed through 2011 also. Brit Miller is going to be good…very good I think. He was an animal on special teams and cracked a few heads this past weekend. He is fast, strong, can catch, and blocks really well. He is definitely the FB of the future in my opinion.
We met in a past life and you were wrong then too
Mine too
Cut Norris or move him to 2nd string. I do think that Miller moving up is a sign of the future for Norris.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Jason
Is the bonus money signing bonus money or incentives? If incentives are they Likely to be Earned incentives?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Idea for Jason
since the 49ers probably will make some FA signings of O-linemen, if he could put up the salary cap for teams like the Saints and Patriots who have UFA O-linemen that would could interested in. (Ex: Logan Mankins, Jahri Evans). I know next year might be uncapped, but it could give us some perspective on the likelihood that those guys would be FAs.
Go 49ers
Probably need cap list of all teams.. Hopefully San Diego doesn't have any room and has to let McNeil go

I'm pretty sure...
… the team is trying to extend both. Problem is, neither player is probably in any kind of hurry to sign anything until the CBA works itself out.
TRADING NATE CLEMENTS
would it be cost effective for us rather than releasing him as some want to do (i am not one of these people) to trade him?
maybe we could trade him to a team like the chiefs who need secondary help, and therefore lessening the chances that eric berry gets taken first by them?
by MichaelClutchtree on Dec 7, 2009 11:23 PM PST reply actions
Trade him to the Chiefs
For their 2nd round pick
Gimme 1 round!

well
Well, there really wouldnt be any difference in cap relief if we cut or trade Nate.
he is signed for 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013(which is a voidable yr).
But i doubt any team will want to take on his salary, ala Reggie Bush where no one wants his high salary.
Salary
The acquiring team would only be responsible for his base salary, right? If Clements continues to play solidly, I’d think he’s worth that $6M in base pay. If he flounders, they could also cut him without any penalty, I think.
As you mention, it won’t be any difference to the 49ers financially, but if they are dead set on ridding themselves of Clements, I’d imagine some team is willing to ship over a late round pick (at least) for him. Not much value, but still something rather than nothing.
I would really like to consider switching Nate to safety in the offseason. He tackles reasonably well and he still has pretty good speed for a safety.
Waiting for Giants and Niners to contend once more.
But if we switch Goldson to SS and everyone wants us to draft Eric Berry at FS, who do we take now?
Sometimes I lay in bed at night and wonder if McCloughan ever thought about becoming a gynecologist.
Joe Haden.
He’s the consensus #1 corner in the draft.
I think a starting defensive backfield of Goldson, Clements, Spencer and Haden could be pretty good.
Of course, Clements would be the most expensive Safety ever, but still, it would be nice to have him as an asset rather than a liability (game-wise, not salary cap-wise).
Jason Hill is turning the corner!
Dashon Goldson is not, and will never be, a strong safety.
Especially in a Manusky-coached defense. Goldson is terrible at shedding blocks, and he is a liability when trying to tackle larger players. He would be nearly useless as an 8th man in the box and in coverage against tight ends – which is what Michael Lewis specializes in.
Not to mention the fact that Goldson is the guy we’re trying to eliminate from the line-up by bringing in secondary help and/or rotating our players.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
While I do think that Nate Clements would make an excellent free safety, we simply cannot afford to take him out of the CB slot. We’ve seen first-hand in his recent absence how brutally our corners can be abused when he isn’t in the line-up. Moving Clements would be like taking a band-aid off of one gaping wound and putting it on to a cut of comparable size. We’d just be transferring our troubles, rather than actually fixing them.
If we’re going to address the FS position (and we desperately need to), then it’s going to have to be through the draft, free agency, or a possible trade. Even if we do move Clements to safety, it will only make sense if we bring in new talent in the secondary to fill his current spot.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
logical argument:
If you were the Chiefs and you were drafting ahead of us – would you trade for Nate Clements (and his bloated salary) or just use your #1 pick on Eric Berry? If he falls to us, it’s going to be because everyone else had players higher on their board – not because we were able to change anyone’s mind about drafting the kid.
Because he seems to be very high on most draft boards, I wouldn’t expect him to be available unless we’re drafting somewhere between the 7th and 12th pick. The 49ers haven’t shown much interest in trading up in recent years, so I’m just not holding out hope on Berry being a 49er next year.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
TRADE HIM TO THE CHEIFS
I like that idea… get some value out of him. Annnnnnnd chiefs are the team most likely to take Berry. ha
For those who don't know Jason...
He really is dedicated when it comes to the Salary Cap. He has a lot of knowledge in that area, as well as the 49ers as a whole. I encourage you to ask him questions.
Well, we're waiting....
thanks
Thanks Drummer, apreciate the kind words.
more background on myself, Ive been keeping track of player salaries, since 2000(on and off between 2002 and 2004, but been doing it since 2005).
If any questions I shall ask
Always wanted to know couple salary cap questions like my previous question would the niners be a good player in free agency regardless if there was a cap or say for instance if the NFL became the MLB in regards to no cap? If the NFL became a league with no cap would the niners become a mediocre team? I know right now our situation cap wise looks good looking at the numbers.
by 49ersAllTheWay on Dec 8, 2009 2:21 PM PST up reply actions
Only time will tell
I guess time will tell if there is no CBA, and no Cap, thus we will find out whether we compete with the Dallas’ Washhington’s, NY teams, etc.. when it comes to FA’s.
Im not worried as much as some are, I like our Team president Jed York, who i think will dish out money for top notch players, like a OG, which is a positiion we need badly.
What do you think are the chances that there will be no football in 2011?
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
tough one
I dont think there will be a lockout after 2010, maybe after 2011 tho.
Of course, the talks are having a rookie cap, meaning like NBA, a player picked wherever is set to an amount.
Thats why you may see a unbeleivable amount of Juniors enter the 2010 draft, like a Mallett.
I'm pretty sure Mallet is a redshirt sophomore
But it would make sense for him to declare from a financial standpoint.
The comparisons to Joe Flacco are going to come up…..
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Dec 8, 2009 5:04 PM PST up reply actions
Why do people keep talking about Mallett for the 49ers?
He’s played 1 year, never broke 60% completions, and the Niners’ QB situation is basically set for 2009, and yet people want to invest a draft pick on him? Bizarre.
Jason Hill is turning the corner!

how does a team get a cap penalty?
also, can you explain the top 51 rule, dead money and the workout?
Go 49ers
Some answers
dead money—money you’re paying out for players who are no longer on your team. Basically someone you cut before their contract expired.
Cap penalties are hard to come by these days since the NFL has to approve every contract. If a contract is likely to go over the cap they send it back to the team to redo. If a team goes over they can be fined draft picks or money. Basically whatever the Commissioner decides.
Don’t know about workout money or the 51 rule.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
top 51 rule and workout
Workout bonus money is for every player, not a draftee or UDFA, who participates in the teams Workout program, and each player gets a certain amount, ranging from 6,720 all the way to the 100,000’s.
as for Top 51, thats for during the ofseason, only the top 51 salaries count against the cap, cause if all 80 or whatever counted, you’d most likely be over the cap.
I'm sure this is Salary Cap Question #1 on the FAQ
How do you calculate the dead money when a player is cut or released? For instance, if the 49ers decided to drop Nate Clements how much salary cap space do they save and what stays on the books?
do they take the same penalty
for releasing clements as they do trading him?
if the effects are the same then 100% trade him rather than release him
hes probably worth a 2nd-3rd round draft pick in a trade
by MichaelClutchtree on Dec 8, 2009 9:32 PM PST up reply actions
NO ONE would give up a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Clements.
You have to remember that – in addition to being a recently-injured corner who has been a relative disappointment and is now on the decline, he also carries with him a huge contract.
Those things coupled together cause his trade value to plummet – you’d be lucky to get a 5th round choice for him at this point.
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
Maybe a 3rd rounder
I thought when a player is traded the remainder of the guaranteed portion of the contract is paid by the team he is leaving and only the non-guaranteed portion is paid by the new team and not the entire salary.
True knowledge is knowing you know, nothing!!
Blk Sand Ninja-
His base...
… salaries for the next two seasons is pretty high, I’d imagine. It’s $6M next season, which is elite corner money, even without the bonus. I understand that the team can cut him if he doesn’t perform and they’re only on the hook for the game checks up to that point, but if you’re giving up a third pick, you probably want a player that you don’t cut.
its
Its usually calculated by the remaining bonus money left, if the bonus left is higher than his salary, then you take a hit, but if not, and say he has 5M in salary, but 2.5M left for bonus, money, his dead money is 2.5M, but save 2.5M also.
On the postential 2010 FA's?
Are those salaries factored in to your ending numbers there at the bottom AB83Rules (Jason)?
