FRANK GORE'S FUTURE?

The past week people have brought up the thought of trading Frank Gore. If we were to trade him, what should we do with him? Would this be beneficial for our team? Maybe he could help us to fill other holes, as well as free up even MORE cap space

Maybe he could possibly be shipped to a team like the Raiders with 3 mediocre RBs, or a Patriots team with 2 old and 1 inconsistent one (maroney), or maybe the packers

Gore for Asomugha

That’s about the only trade I’d like to see involving the Raiders. Of course, the Raiders would also have to take Nate off our hands and since Nnamdi is under the ‘chise tag, they’d have to extend the never get thrown at (unless playing the Chargers) shutdown CB. I would propose, with a straight face:

Nate Clements, Frank Gore

FOR

Nnamdi Asomugha, Robert Gallery and DHB (ok, the DHB part is a joke)

Alex Smith may have been the #1 overall pick but he still can’t tell why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I like that, but doubt it would ever happen.

Gallery?

He’s the raiders version of Kwame Harris.

by bakoninerfan on Dec 9, 2009 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

At guard...

Gallery looks better than either of SF’s starters. As a tackle, he indeed wasn’t very good.

Trade him and...

pick up Reggie Bush since he will be getting cut because he will cost the Saints to much

by danknerd49 on Dec 8, 2009 6:57 PM PST reply actions

you're gonna have to get Coffee ready to play then too.

To run inside the Tackles. I do like the idea of picking up Reggie on the cheap though. Seems to be falling out of favor in N.O. and we need his return skills badly.

by Tre9er on Dec 9, 2009 6:36 AM PST up reply actions

not a bad idea

Ok, so what about a reworked trade with Oakland. Nate and Frank for Nnamdi and M.Bush; then we go ahead and grab R.Bush to form the incredible backfield duo nicknamed “the Garden”?

On a serious note, Reggie Bush as a return man for the 49ers is an idea that isn’t hard to warm up to.

Alex Smith may have been the #1 overall pick but he still can’t tell why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

by Andrew Davidson on Dec 9, 2009 6:52 AM PST up reply actions

I'm hoping we can get one of these guys

and I’ll probably leave some guys off

Reggie Bush, Leon Washington, Darren Sproles

Those guys are the type of compliment we need and also all electric returners

by Tre9er on Dec 9, 2009 6:59 AM PST up reply actions

Leon

didn’t he sign an extension with the Jets this past offseason? I’d like seeing any of those three on the 49ers to be completely honest.

Alex Smith may have been the #1 overall pick but he still can’t tell why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

no

he wanted one. never got it

by Tre9er on Dec 9, 2009 9:04 AM PST up reply actions

But they'd also be our #1 RB options

None of these guys have been the guy to handle the majority of the loads on their respective teams. I’d welcome anyone of them to return punts and kicks, but we couldn’t realistically put them out there for 30(ish) plays on O, then throw ‘em out there to the wolves on kick returns. Leon Washington, Hurt. Reggie Bush, fragile if not hurt. Darren Sproles, super freaking small and a stud, but while he’s not hurt are we realistically gonna bank our running and return game on one guy who right now shares the load…?

Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!

by bonbrillio on Dec 9, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

Complement

i.e. a second back who has a different run style than your main back.

Frank Gore is a power runner. All those guys are shifty runners. Leon Washington would be a great second back, so would Sprole. Not sure about Reggie Bush.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Dec 9, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions

I must've misread the thread

I was under the impression this was a ‘trade gore for whomever’ idea.

In that case, eh, depends on the cost, we got a glaring need in the return game.

Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!

by bonbrillio on Dec 9, 2009 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

No, you're right

The thread is about trading Gore (which is a horrible idea in my opinion).

But Tre9er was talking about bringing in those backs as a secondary back (even if he did misspell complement).

So there were two different things going on here.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

It’s kind of funny, I always try to get Bush in Madden so A.Smith and Bush can play in the same backfield again.

Well, it would be crazy to trade him with no legitimate backup plan. I’ve expressed concern over Gore recently, but I remember Terry Kirby, Derrick Loville, and Kevan Barlow vividly enough to not want to fly blindly into some crappy running back.

by 10forTech on Dec 8, 2009 7:46 PM PST reply actions

Wow

I can remember a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that Gore wasn’t hitting his holes quickly and that the running woes couldn’t all be blamed on our O-line, and I was nearly chased out of town with pitches and forks.

Now it’s all the rage to talk about trading him. You don’t trade a guy who has had three 1000 yard years in a row. You don’t trade a guy who was on pace for a 1200 yard year (if you average in his missed time).

What you do is get some O-line help, get a speedy back to switch off, and don’t put Gore in as a receiver so much. Every route he runs means less energy to make a hole later on in the game.

That’s what you do.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Bingo

Frank Gore is still the best weapon we have on offense. It’s a shame we can’t really use him effectively anymore. Running out of the “Raye Gun” just isn’t as effective and now putting Smith behind center is a huge tip-off that it’s probably going to Gore. The sorry state of our run-blocking LOLine doesn’t help things either.

Gore needs a friend.

To compliment him. Get him off the field in those spread looks where he’s a WR. Get a guy who can run sweeps and off tackle to really keep the defense honest and away from the inside. Run two back sets with both players in. One can stay in for blitz pickup on passing downs, on run downs make the defense guess who will get the ball.

by Tre9er on Dec 9, 2009 6:39 AM PST reply actions

I can definitely be that friend.

“Hey Frank, lookin’ sharp!”

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic.

You can’t really compare a MLB with a RB. RB have much shorter career spans than inside linebackers. Frank Gore is entering what is normally the decline phase for runningbacks and the team would be wise to entertain offers for him in the near future.

Personally, I’d like to hold on to him for another year, while the team develops another running back to take his place. In fact, I wouldn’t mind using the later first round pick on a running back. But I’m against trading Gore just to trade him. The team has to have a replacement in mind.

I would vote for a 4th poll option

Keep, unless offered at least one player and one pick that is worth while.

No absolutes, it depends on the player and the pick, and I’d think the actuality of it is slim. Key would be the player being a proven RB, at least a proven blocker. If we don’t get an experienced RB in return, we would then have Coffee plus another inexperienced RB not able to pick up blitzes. It is something Gore has been able to do effectively and shouldn’t be overlooked, should we trade him. The market isn’t exactly filled with guys like that who may be expendable from another team’s POV. Making a deal like that would be tough, and since we would be in an absolute position of strength in terms of shopping a guy like Gore, we should be very very particular for any deal that is offered or contemplated.

I don’t know the lay of the land so well (and who among these players may be FA’s), but off the top: a guy like Cadillac Williams, who is coming off an older injury may be attainable w/ a hi 2nd round pick (realistically, they’d never give up their 1st rounder, and we wouldn’t pay for it), or Marshawn Lynch (option 1, above all others) may be expendable in Buffalo w/ Fred Jackson becoming a bigger player + a 2nd rounder, or, I’m about to say it (for real), Reggie Bush + a first rd pick.

I could be over-valuing Gore, with these hypos, but if not for good value in return, I say we hold firm.

Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!

by bonbrillio on Dec 9, 2009 10:53 AM PST reply actions

No way

Lynch isn’t going anywhere and your not going to get a first rounder along with bush.
But I would be willing to give the saints a 3rd rounder to get bush. He could be the big KR/PR guy we desperately need. We get our ass kicked on field position which makes things much harder for Alex. Also a scary guy to line up along side Gore in the spread

by GMARCH on Dec 9, 2009 12:51 PM PST reply actions

Ironic twist

I believe that it is reasonable to assume that with the offensive line back on the field next year (Staley, 1st round pick, maybe Pashos, Rachal improved…), Gore will still be a good running back.

Here is the intriguing thing.
The less Gore is used this year, the more his shelf life will be extended.
Running backs have relatively short careers and I think their life-span is measured in hits and tackles, not time. Just a thought.

The 49ers should keep him and get rid of their incompetent offensive coordinator

Gore has not been bad this year, his bad games are a result of terrible playcalling. Jimmy Raye the offensive coodinator for the 49ers will not call a run when the 49ers are in a shotgun formation.

When Alex Smith is lined up under center teams can easily diagnose if the 49ers are running the ball or if they are throwing the football.

The best example of how easy it was for a defense to know that a run was coming was when the 49ers were backed up at the one yard line. Gore was handed the ball, but with the playcall he had no opportunity to get any yards on the play.

Do you realize how sick it would make me to watch Tom Brady turn around and hand off to Gore as he wins another Super bowl to tie or pass Joe Montana for total wins in the Big Game?.

Best ever.

I don’t know if Brady is the best ever, but he has enjoyed a LOT more health than Montana did in his career. I think even without Super Bowls, Brady’s statistics are going to be so ridiculous that the “greatest QB ever” will always include Brady’s name.

by sfgfan on Dec 11, 2009 10:17 AM PST up reply actions

Keep Gore

Gore should stay in San Francisco and the 49ers should go find an offensive coordinator that actually knows how to do their job.

You can’t have a team just dedicated to running the football then dedicated to just throwing the football. We’ve seen the worst of the two worlds with Raye.

It’s absolutely embarrassing to have Gore carry the ball just nine times in a game! That right there should have got Raye fired!

Does Raye not even know that prior to the game that Gore in eight games against the Sehawks had average well over 100 yards rushing?

by Rocky63215 on Dec 10, 2009 3:20 PM PST reply actions

I Am On The Fence On This One

I have brought up the idea of trading Gore in other threads. But York has me thinking on this one. He was on Radnich earlier and talked about utilizing Gore the same we we did with Roger Craig in the past. Draws, Sweeps and Screens. I think Gore an excel in this new offense but we have to understand it’s a complete 180 from what he is used to say it will take some time.

Regarding Value: Well he isn’t the most durable back in the league but at 26 he is just hitting his prime. It would have to be something like the Portis-Bailey trade a few years back. If the 49ers aren’t going to receive a 1st round pick for Gore then they must get a high quality player in returm. Kansas City, Oakland, Cleveland, Houston, New England, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Seattle seem to be teams that will be looking for RB’s.

Player and pick options

To Kansas City for their 1st round selection (would be top 10 no doubt)
To Oakland for LB- Kirk Morrison and 2nd round pick
To Cleveland for their 2nd round in 2010 and 1st round in 2011 (not sure they would)
To Houston for CB- Dunta Robinson and 2nd round pick in 2010
To New England for DE- Ty Warren and 2nd round pick
To Green Bay for 1st and 3rd round pick. Or OL- Darryn Colledge and 2nd round pick
To Tampa Bay for G- Davin Joseph and 2nd round pick
To New Orleans for DE- Will Smith and 3rd round pick
To Seattle for CB- Marcus Trufant

Frank Gore

The team should hold on to him. Fans need to realize that this is a team game. No RB can have any kind of success running behind an offensive line as horrible as this one. There have been a lot of comments regarding the lack of productivity from Gore, and many say that he hasn’t been able to find any holes, as if to say it’s his fault. The truth is he hasn’t been able to find any holes because there simply have not been any for him to run through. Trade him? Why? Frank Gore isn’t a T.O. type of player. He’s the ultimate teammate and just wants to win. Trading him doesn’t make much sense.

The problem isn’t with him. The problem is with the O-line (and also Jimmy Raye, but that’s another larger issue).

With Alex Smith progressing the way that he has so far, it would behoove the 49ers to keep Gore around so that he can help balance the offensive attack. The question is, who would the team rather have in the backfield? Glen Coffee? Or another player equally as good or better? The ladder would undoubtedly cost the 49ers money. Some of the names being thrown out there as a possible replacement for Gore are “budding” stars and would demand the green. They would probably demand more carries as well. Remember, Gore is the consummate professional, and has never had a history of causing any problems in the locker room. Fans should not take that for granted. He’s the perfect fit for the 49ers and what they’re trying to build (i.e. a team around Alex Smith). There isn’t a good reason to trade him.
