Fox Sports Says 49ers WR Jones is NFLs 3rd biggest waist of money

San Francisco WR Brandon Jones NFL on FOX Video Central From what I was told by a 49ers beat writer, Jones' offseason signing represents a disconnect between the team's front office and its coaches. Coming off a career-high 41 catches with Tennessee in 2008, Jones was inked to a five-year, $16.5 million contract that included $5.4 million guaranteed. The investment has yielded one catch for 18 yards and nine punt returns for 26 yards. Jones can't get on the field and is buried on the depth chart.

HOMOPHONE POLICE

got it before I could

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

It’s not really that much guaranteed money, though (speaking in NFL terms…). I’m not hitting myself over the head about the contract.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

did he beat you up and take your lunch money?

What do you have against the guy? At least the guy can catch a punt. I put the bad handoff on the “reverse” on the PR on Battle. BJ remains a big-bodied guy with lots of speed. The 15-yard catch he made against the Seahawks wasn’t an easy one, and so far he’s the only guy on the Niners roster with a 100% catch rate this season :P!

Jason Hill is turning the corner!

by grantmp on Dec 9, 2009 9:02 PM PST up reply actions

He made alot of those types of catches when with Tennessee too

I wish he would get more playing time so that he couls earn that money. He is capable. I followed him throughout his college career and the guy catches some passes that you would not think are catchable

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

by Drew Kerr on Dec 9, 2009 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously

I’m expecting him to be around for year two. If Smith continues to grow and J.Hill continues to fall out of favor, it’s possible Jones is around for all five years of his deal.

by sfgfan on Dec 10, 2009 9:46 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly.

I’m willing to be patient with Jones, and the rest of this offense, until they’re in their second season in the same system with the same players.

doubt they would have drafted any other receiver. not like the money on Jones prevents them from signing anyone else.

Crabtree

I don’t think you don’t pass on that kind of talent.

by David Fucillo on Dec 10, 2009 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

Right.

Because Jones > Crabtree?

You upgrade when you have the opportunity to, and Crabtree was the clear top WR in the draft, even without the combine.

by sfgfan on Dec 10, 2009 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

Why do you hate the Crabtree signing so much?

He’s clearly our number 1 WR even though he missed the first part of the season. Just like the QB position, the WR position takes time to learn and adjust to the NFL. If he’s this good now, just imagine how much better he’ll be next year.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

His injurie in preseason really hurt him

He was looking good before he got injured. Crabtree and Morgan are obviously the #1 and #2 WR’s on the team, but I could see Jones battling with Hill for the #3 spot next year. It’s not like Hill has really torn it up this season and he was never injured.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

by urnext on Dec 9, 2009 10:30 PM PST reply actions

Alex seems to be willing to throw to anyone

He really spreads it out. Obviously VD is his crutch, especially in the end zone. But he threw to Hill in the Tennessee game, he always goes to Crabtree. He’s been going to Morgan more. Gore always gets his catches and now Delanie Walker. So the more talent, the better. Once you get some olinemen that can run block, you’ll have a pretty loaded offense. Just as long as these receivers can start catching the ball.

But he also catches...

… five to six, no? There’s a reason why QB completion percentages in the 60%-range is considered pretty good. It’s to be expected that one in three passes will be dropped or go incomplete.

I heard locally on the radio

In a Rod Brooks conversation with Kevin Lynch, that the Niner receivers were using vaseline on their arms to stay warm but that, understandibly, some of it got on the footballs. That, with the cold, could be why so many guys had drops in Seattle. Which makes me wonder why they didn’t just wear sleeves?

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 10, 2009 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

I sure hope that is joke

Did the Seahawk front office give the 49ers players that tip?

by bignerd on Dec 10, 2009 10:16 AM PST up reply actions

Seriously.

But Rob Brooks is on the sideline for the radio broadcast, no?

by sfgfan on Dec 10, 2009 10:16 AM PST up reply actions

Yep

Sideline reporter and he said that’s what he saw. Lynch responded that he’d investigate with the players. I didn’t know that it helped keep you warm, just that it kept the skin from drying out in freezing temps. But if I’m trying to play WR I’d just rather go with long sleeves. It would make more sense for a lineman so your opponent can’t hold you.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Dec 10, 2009 11:42 AM PST up reply actions

why wouldn't they just put on long sleeves?

"Pat is still just scratching the surface." - Coach Singletary on LB Patrick Willis

by 49erLou on Dec 10, 2009 10:51 AM PST up reply actions

That doesn’t make sense.

Wouldn’t it be against a rule, some rule somewhere, that players could not grease their bodies. Wouldn’t that give them an advantage breaking tackles, shedding blocks, etc.

by CorneliusJ on Dec 10, 2009 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

I know there is a rule similar to this

cause shortly after I got out of high school round about 10 years ago the running backs on my old team got busted for spraying PAM of all things on their uniforms to make them slick. There is definitely a rule against greasing yourself.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Dec 12, 2009 4:21 AM PST up reply actions

Alex doesn't ever lose his confidence in him

He has shown that when a receiver drops a ball, he’ll go right back to him. I like that. VD definitely has dropped some very easy balls, but compared to past seasons, he’s really broken out this year. He’ll get it together. He’s had a ton of QB’s throwing to him during his career, so maybe going with one QB for a continued period of time will help all these guys.

Brandon Jones

Regarding the utilization of Jones, or lack of, fans must be completely bewildered. Jones was injured at the start of the season, but upon returning, many thought he was going to be implemented into the game plan, especially given the big contract that he signed in the offseason. Needless to say, that hasn’t happened.

The man hasn’t been given an opportunity to perform. Simply put, Jones isn’t to blame here. If fans want to point fingers for this one, they should direct it towards Coach Sing.

by Waiting4JoshMorgan on Dec 10, 2009 11:31 PM PST reply actions

Singletary

The gate keeper for WRs is actually Jerry Sullivan. The guy is a stickler for details, and if he doesn’t feel the WR is up to snuff, he gets no recommendation from Sullivan. That’s what happened in previous years with guys like Taylor Jacobs and Ashley Lelie.

I’m not saying that one should blame Sullivan, I’m just saying that Singletary has to trust the judgment of his offensive assistants. Jones missed A LOT of time. The 49ers have WRs that are currently working well with Alex Smith, and they have to ease Jones in at the expense of other WRs who already have chemistry. It’s a tricky situation and it’s a bit hasty to get up in arms about his lack of playtime. He’ll have more chances once Bruce retires and if Jason Hill continues to fall out of favor with the coaches.

by sfgfan on Dec 11, 2009 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

sfgfan

Your assessment of the situation offers a different perspective, and I appreciate it. It makes a lot of sense. But who is the head coach here? Sullivan or Singletary. Who is the one to make the final decisions regarding who plays and who doesn’t? Sullivan or Singletary. Further, who is the one with the authority? Sullivan or Singletary.

You make great points, especially the one regarding the need for Singletary to “trust the judgment of his offensive assistants”, but as head coach of an organization, you have the ability to override everyone else’s opinion. With that said, singletary has to recognize the situation: Jones was the “big-prized” free agent WR that the team brought in to try and shore up the WR core. Why not put him in and see what he can do? That’s not what you call optimizing all the talent that you have on the roster (see that Clayton kid for more; the team probably could have used his raw speed and shiftiness to return kicks).

Thanks for the response.

by Waiting4JoshMorgan on Dec 12, 2009 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

Overriding your coaches' opinions.

The problem with a head coach overriding his assistants opinions is that it can pretty much deem that assistant’s opinion (and possibly talents) useless to the eyes of others (players included). If Singletary was Mike Holmgren or any other offensive coach, I’m sure him taking Sullivan’s legs from under him won’t look so bad, but Singletary has a defensive background. A defensive coach has every right to yield any offensive opinions to offensive coaches, especially one as widely respected as Sullivan is.

Stepping on toes, is what some people would call it, I think.

Brandon Jones

is probably our fastest wide receiver, with great hands. He has been misused this season to say the least. No, he’s not a punt returner but he has demonstrated great hands by never dropping one. This guy should be our deep threat but offensive creativity is lacking to say the least.
