Who will the 49ers draft? Mock all 7 rounds
UPDATE 2/22/2009 (Singletary's mock), UPDATE 2/22/2009(My Mock draft)
The top will be my 7 rounds and near the bottom will be Singletary's. If you haven't seen my 1st round mock draft on FanShots take a look before saying I think we'll draft Andre Brown, because on there I already have him gone by the 10th pick.
1. Michael Oher, OT, The guy in my opinion is the 2nd most ph(F)ysical Offensive lineman in the Draft behind Andre Brown. Here's a quote from www.nfldraftscout.com "There is a diversity of opinion surrounding Oher (pronounced "oar"), but none of it has to do with his elite athletic ability. A naturally quiet, reserved man, Oher speaks loudly on the field, where he has demonstrated the ability to absolutely out-quick, outmuscle and manhandle opponents." Not to pretend as if I know anything about OL footwork and technique but this guy sounds perfect for the 49ers.
2. Rashad Johnson, FS, Remember how just oh about 20 or so hours ago I said Nic Harris would be Roman's replacement? Well that began to seem a little too unrealsitic since he's entering the NFL as OLB as I said before. I remember rooting against Alabama this entire season yet again and again Javier Arenas and Rashad John would come up with these big plays, extending their win streak all the way into the SEC championship game where they finally lost at the hands of the Gators.
3. Deon Butler, WR, (PSU) It's funny that all the scouts are talking about Derrick Williams and his 4.3 speed and him being 3rd on the Penn State all time reception list, when this guy here actually is 1st on the all time reception list, yet he gets no media coverage. This guy goes up for the ball just is a playmaker. (Just ran a 4.26 at the combine, his stock just went up)
4. Sammie Lee Hill, DT,(before Deon Butler) A massive 330 lbs, went to Stillman, never seen this guy play before but 330 lbs has got to do clog something.
5. Tyrell Sutton, RB, There has been talk about getting a power back for those 4&1 situations, the guy is small and doesnt have elite speed but this is why we should draft him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlfSbIwM_iI really he is projected to go 4th-5th round seems illogical to pass him up if we get the chance to draft him. I'm not 100% sure of this but I think he was KR too as a freshman.. it will be nice to have a threat back there.
6. Hunter Cantwell, QB, Discovered this guy during the QB challenge for senior QBs. He displayed a strong, accurate arm. In college he use to have a long windup release, the announcers were saying, but now he's shortened it and has seemed to have lost no velocity. His stock didn't rise like I expected do to timing issues and accuracy.
7. Nick Reed, DE,(Before Ryan Baker) His stats standout for a guy thats projected to go in the 7th round. 13 sacks 20 Tackles for losses
________________________
Singletary
1. Michael Oher, OT, (scroll up)
2. Ron Brace, DT, Just as good or better then Raji maybe?(both played for BC) the guy is 330 lbs. He's the one who actually gets double teamed.
3. Javon Ringer, RB, (before Shawn Nelson) - based on this quotation from Scot McCloughan, talking about RB position in the draft "It's a very deep year at the position. And I'm excited about that. If it's early, it means that he's the best player on the board and it's a position of need. If it's later on, then it means we drafted somebody we think can come in here and make the team. We feel good about bringing back Thomas Clayton this year. I think he's proven in preseason he has some value. We were able to get him on the 53 at the end of the season. He never got in a game, but I think he's proven that he can be a back for us as well. It's a position that's very important to us. We understand that we're going to have to run the football to have the success we want next year, and it's going to have to be a two-back system." --followed by--" I think it's very important because not only do you have the running threat but you have the receiving threat. A checkdown guy. We're not going to be an offense that's going to throw the ball 30 times a game and stretching the field and trying to make the big plays down the field. We're going to be a possession-type team where the checkdowns are very important. Depending on who the quarterback is and the arm strength, the checkdown becomes even more important" That last line sounds like a shot at Shaun Hill, since when did you need arm strength to throw a check down? Scot I'm on to you. Back to Ringer, he was a horse at Michigan State. Five yards here Five yards there sometimes 40 times a game.
4. Maurice Evans, DE, Evans was suspended for half his senior year, which allowed aaron maybin to be the college super star he is.
5. Victor Butler (before Daniel Holtzclaw), OLB, Singletary is bound to pick a linebacker
6. Kevin Ellison, (before Todd Boekman) FS, A USC product that had a string of knee injuries which kept him out for a good portion of the year. It's common knowledge these Safeties at USC are well groomed. I changed the pick here because of yet another Quotation from Scot McCloughan, talking about Safety position "If we're able to get an impact player in the draft or free agency for the price we want to pay him, we'll do it. We have good enough talent on this team to go out and play and have a little bit of depth there."
7. Chase Daniels(before P.J Hill) QB, Chase fits the Jim McCahon mold.. can sort of scramble, has played in big games.

Mock all 7 rounds?
Round one, if you had any more of an overinflated sense of importance, you’d try to punch out God.
Round two, you want to be round one so badly that you actually think you matter.
Round three, you know why the allotted time drops to five minutes for the rest of the draft starting with your round? Because no one wants to look at you any longer than that.
Round four, if we need another Michael Robinson, we know where you are.
Round five, how sad is it that you’re just like round four, but somehow crappier?
Round six, how long are you going to live off Tom Brady? Seriously, this is the saddest case of hanging on too long since the last Rolling Stones album.
Round seven, while technically only the last guy selected is Mr. Irrelevant, I like to think everyone in round seven is Mr. Irrelevant.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
my favorite mock so far
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal
Sutton
I think he should be hired on as a RB consultant on how to get great body lean and how to break tackles—impressive!
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!
The Draft this year is deep in RBs
No media coverage on players like
Javon Ringer – the nations second leading rusher
James Davis – the Thunder to the Thunder lightening dou at Clemson
Glen Coffee – The bruiser from alabama
I wouldn’t even know they were coming out if it wasn’t for google

One criticism, Supraman
Where are the DE/OLB types here? Singletary has suggested that that’s an area of need and that they might even take a swing at a couple of them this year…
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!
You're right
I edited it.
Instead of selecting 2 DTs
we select Maurice Evans out of Penn State
If it wasnt for the suspension he’d be a 2nd round selection
Going into the 2008 season he was considered one of the top 5 best

Good one
As a PSU alum, I’ve seen this guy play since his freshman year and I must say he would have been a sure 1st rounder next year if he would have stayed. As a sophmore he led the Big Ten in sacks… he was in the doghouse in his junior year as everyone knows. IMOP he should have stayed at PSU but oh well our loss can be our gain… Evans will be a bargain pick for the Niners! I would rather pick him up in the 3rd round rather than risk a 1 rounder on Maybin (even though I love Project Mayhem) or Orakpo. Honestly, I would trade down and grab a guy like Alphonso Smith from Wake to sure up the corner spot or stay at 10 spot and pick up one of the OT ( Monroe, Smith, Smith (other one from Baylor), Oher). Chris Wells is another interesting prospect for me… something to think about… but he does dance alittle too much for a big boy. I hate dancing…

PENN STATE FAN HERE
What do you think about drafting Deon Butler instead of Derrick Williams
http://www.runboard.com/bsanfran49ers
Deon all the way!
Watching them over the years… I love all three of them Jordan, Deon and Derrick. But I have to say that Derrick rarely shows up in big games. But Deon shines when he touches the ball. Just check out the TD catch he made against Texas A&M last year and even against USC’s defense he shows he’s the got the moves and the speed to make guys miss. Deon Butler was a walk-on DB, what a great story! I would love to see him in a Niner’s uniform… I’m buying the jersey!

Daniel Holtzclaw
It’s late in the draft and all, but if “Singletary’s bound to take a LB,” I doubt it’s going to be an inside backer. Especially if they’ve only taken one DE/OLB up until that point.
Moved around?
Of course they can. But you can only move if their skillsets fit the position you’re moving them to. For example, Manny Lawson can definitely move inside, but the only ILB spot he can move into is already occupied by Willis. In you specific example, Daniel Holtzclaw sounds like someone who can play the Ted if he adds a few pounds. From what I understand, he has limited athleticism, so he wouldn’t fit at SOLB, and I don’t see anything about pass rushing skills, so would he really work as a WOLB? Basically, the guy fits as a SILB in a 3-4 and MAYBE SOLB in a 4-3.
-1
Someone did a post on moving manny inside? I’m temted to put on my caps lock key here: why would you put your tallest, leanest linebacker inside, part of what linebackers do is shed blocks and not get blown out the hole. it’s much easier for a shorter, stouter linebacker (like, i dunno WILLIS nd SPIKES) to get good leverege than manny lawson. Plus you need your faster lb’s on the outside. I think parys haraylson would do better at that switch than manny.
Whos the best pass rusher left on the market?
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
This is normally true...
but his argument was a general one. Shorter, bigger linebackers are what works inside in a 3-4, but that’s not to say that you can’t have a tall, lean linebacker play inside in any defense.
I’m certainly not advocating that Manny play inside for us, ever. But given the right system, he certainly could. Lawson (6’5", 240) has the speed and coverage skills that he could play a role similar to what Brian Urlacher’s (6’4", 250) in Chicago in a 4-6. He could even play in a system like the current version of the Tampa 2, where the 4-3/nickel set MLB drops back in a deep spy over the middle of the field.
Again, I’m not saying that it ever should happen – and I agree that it wouldn’t work at all in the 49ers’ current defensive scheme. However, it’s a bit closed-minded to say he could never play inside at all, simply because of his build. The right blend of speed an instincts could create a very capable ballhawk-type MLB with a strong front 4, even if he is “tall and lean.”
Also, I disagree that Haralson would be any better inside than Lawson. If you were going to move him anywhere, it would be to a 4-3 DE. You have to judge a player’s skill set first, then his build.
OK, my point is this. (and not neccessarily aimed at schlecko, but the boneheads who posted that we should move manny)
You want to put your players in a position to succeed. Manny COULD play middle linebacker, but is he really better there than he is on the outside?
Isaac Bruce COULD play tailback, but should we think about switching him?
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
Lawson
So far, he hasn’t really shown he’s capable of playing really well outside anyway, so I don’t see how it could hurt to put him into a read-react position (Willis’). Notice I didn’t say he could play the Ted? I think the ONLY inside position he would fit in is a the Mike, which is Willis’ position, and basically like Urlacher’s, as shlecko points out.
Again, I’m not advocating a move, as the 49ers already have a super talented Mike. If it were necessary, though, I don’t see how Manny could really fail in that position, as read-react is probably a lot easier than teeter-tottering between blitzing, man and zone coverage.
I'm not advocating...
… a Lawson move inside. I remember someone writing an actual fanpost about it a while back and decided to use it as an example. In any case, it IS possible, and that’s all I was saying.
Do I smell Percy?
Anyone interested in Percy Harvin as our possible 2nd rounder if he’s available or trade down to get him? Most likely we will need a Rossum replacement… he would be a perfect replacement.
Not me.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

As a 2nd-rounder?
He is the stretch-the-field type WR and the scatback HB and the KR specialist that the team needs—all rolled into one. If the expense was that low, I’d be listening. I can’t see anyone who was upset that we didn’t take DeSean Jackson being unhappy with his selection (except for the difference in their route-running skills). I just wonder whether he’d stay healthy. Really though, it’s unlikely that he’ll drop out of the first round given that he’s going to run a ridiculous 40 time this weekend.
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!
I guess we should also list
which positions we think the Niners would have picked up via FA before the draft. That would help understand the draft choices we list.
Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?
Predictions
Since tomorrow is the week leading into free agency, I’ll throw up a front page post with predictions and asking for predictions. Then we can go from there if that works.

SF I'm praying for ya baby
Hopefully we can acquire Gibril Wilson and Khalif Barnes in FA. Staley can be moved back to RT.
I’d like RAJI, DT Bost. coll. or Jeremy Maclin if DE/OLB Brown is not avial but I don’t like Maybin with the pick.
2. Ron Brace if Raji not avial at 1 or Kenny Britt definite Red Zone threat
3. Pat White I think he develop real well he has everything Vick did except for an 80 yard arm but he adds, touch to his throws as needed plus can be used for a lot of things Im fine with Hill for now
4 Tyrell Sutton RB
5 Bardon Ramses if no Kenny Britt we need a redzone threat
6 Vic Butler
7. Fastest CB avail
I TOTALLY agree with drafting Pat White.
I know a lot of people will hate on Pat White, mostly because of his size. But to put it in perspective, White is the same height as Jeff Garcia, and listed as only ten pounds lighter. One reason I am so high on White is that I am from West Virginia, and I have had the privilege of watching him play QB for the Mountaineers for the last four years. And anybody who doesn’t know or doesn’t believe…..he is a great player. He is definitely an underrated QB, and he is a DEADLY runner. This was written by Don Banks at SI.com yesterday (I think): "INDIANAPOLIS — Musings, observations and the occasional insight as we wrap up Money Day at the NFL Scouting Combine, the day the quarterbacks show their stuff (at least the ones who deem to work out) …
• Score one for collegiate experience and a little old-fashioned perseverance, because of all the quarterbacks who threw on Sunday in Lucas Oil Stadium, none looked better than West Virginia’s Pat White, the record-breaking senior passer who many have been trying to project as anything but a quarterback.
White threw the ball accurately and with authority in his quarterback group, looking poised and comfortable in an unfamiliar setting that has thrown many a highly-ranked quarterback off his game. White was especially strong in throwing deep outs, which always catch the eye of NFL scouts.
"I’ll tell you who looked good today and that was Pat White,‘’ one longtime NFL offensive assistant coach told me. "He really helped himself with that workout. He made people recognize him as a quarterback.’’
In a draft class heavy with junior quarterbacks at the top, it was White who generated the most buzz Sunday. Not USC’s Mark Sanchez, who was decent but far from spectacular, or Georgia’s Matthew Stafford, the top-rated passer who ran a solid 40-yard dash (low 4.8s) but declined to throw here with the rest of the draft’s quarterbacks.
White might still be thought of by some NFL talent evaluators as best-suited to be a team’s Wildcat formation quarterback and part-time receiver, but all Sunday’s throwing session has to do is convince one team to draft him as a full-time quarterback.
"He was sharp and he made all the throws you want to see,‘’ another NFL talent evaluator told me. "Our quarterbacks coach said he looked better than most people anticipated.’’
I’m hoping on everything that if White is sitting on the board anytime in Rounds 2-4, I think we should definitely grab him. People will be impressed, I promise you that. I would love to see him play quarterback, but I don’t know if people would give him the chance. I hope with everything in me that he gets that chance, and I hope it’s as a Niner.
Ramses Barden won’t last until the 5th IMO. He put up insane numbers (albeit at Cal Poly) and could be one of the most physical wideouts in the draft. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it past the third of fourth round. That being said, I’d love to see him in red and gold.
Rafael Rodriguez: Your number 8 organizational prospect before stepping a foot on American soil and has "looked just super so far," according to Felipe Alou...according to Baggs.
I don't know about your mock
But I really like this Deon Butler kid! He has speed, sure, but look at his hands! Look at the way he adjusts to the ball! He could be a very very good slot guy with Morgan and Hill starting. Now, I wonder which quarterback could throw the deep fly’s to Butler…. Hmm….
