Niners Nation FAQ
Over the last two months we've had a pretty sizable increase in traffic here in Niners Nation. That's certainly a good thing and given the new folks, I think it's time to develop a general FAQ for the site.
First, though, I wanted to generate questions that people have had in the past and either figured out themselves, or still aren't sure about. Thus, this FanPost. The FAQ would be a "special page" sort of like our mock draft database, which means you can't leave comments.
So, even if you know the answer to your question, I strongly encourage people to post questions that they think any new visitor to the site might have. It could range from "what's a Fanpost?" to "how do I register?" to "how do I do a search on this site?"
I'm posting this as a FanPost so we can leave it near the top to accumulate questions. I'm moving it to the front page for today just to get some face time for it. Again, I'd appreciate any contributions to this little project.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

FAQ
What’s the deal with Howtheyscored? I mean, does he do anything besides comment on NN and McCC? Does he have a job? Is it true that he does, indeed, live in his mom’s basement? Are his claims that he has a gf real or just a fabrication?

1) The deal with howtheyscored is that he is sexy.
2) He does a few other things.
3) SBNation recently got blocked at his work (that might have been his fault). That’s why he hasn’t been commenting lately during the day.
4) Grandma’s couch.
5) The proof is in the MySpace.

So Fooch...
Tell me again, about the Rec (or recommendation) feature.
Also, how does one properly make a link show up as anything they want… like this?
Blind devotion.
by ProfessorBigelow on Feb 23, 2009 2:15 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The Rec Feature
The Rec(comend) feature is a pretty sweet part of SBNation. Basically, at the bottom of a Fanpost or Fanshot, but before the comments, there are a couple links – Email, Print, Flag, and Rec. The Email and Print links are pretty obvious, and the Flag feature is basically used to report inappropriate content. The purpose of the Rec feature is to “pin” that Fanpost to the top of the Fanpost list. As an example, check out Athletics Nation which always has a bunch of Rec’d posts. You’ll see an entire “recommended fanposts” section, and fanposts that are Rec’d three times or more automatically go to the top and stay there regardless of age.
As more and more fanposts get created, the oldest ones fall off the bottom of the list. The Rec system is a way of keeping “hot” topics around, regardless of age.
Creating Hyperlinks
There are 2 ways to do this. First off, you can simply click on the
button, paste in your hyperlink, click OK, and then type in the text you want to show up inside the HTML brackets.
Alternatively, if you know HTML, you can just create a link using the proper HTML code (the link button does that for you, IIRC).

FAQ
1) What’s a fanshot?
2) Why not just make a fanpost instead of a fanshot?
3) Seriously, I have to scroll THAT far down to see the fanshots? Just let me make this a fanpost!
4) If I don’t see that someone made a fanshot of the same topic that I made a fanpost of, will everyone make fun of me?
5) Who does the Nation think is the toughest QB EVER?

FanShot
So I figured out how to move Fanshots up so they’re right below FanPosts.
I’ll address it in the FAQ, but just for your own info, FanPosts are meant for opening up a broader discussion. If you see a youtube video of the 1980s 49ers rapping, that’s perfect for a FanShot. If you want to give a detailed analysis of a potential 7-round 49ers mock, that would be a FanPost.

cursing is allowed in game threads!

by shlecko on Feb 23, 2009 10:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
correct
I’ll include it in the FAQs, but the general reason for the difference is this: in game threads it’s people posting in virtually real time as things happen. You wanna get the comment out quick and I can see swearing happening. It’s not preferred, but it’s understandable. However, when commenting otherwise, it’s not quite the same real time nature and you can take a moment to think before saying something. Just the difference I see.

College BB > Pro BB
College basketball is acutally more like real basketball than what the pros play which is more of a glorified slam dunk contest. Although with that said, outside of the college tourney I rarely watch either.

The only reason college basketball players don't do those dunks
is because they can’t, they’re not athletic enough. it not like they play better defense, nba players could score 200 points on a college team.
