Other QB's with Possibilities......
I was just on msnbc's sports page and they were talking about the free agent Qb's and those who might be available in a trade if the price is right. And it got me to thinking as to why there have not been any mention of other Qb's besides vick and cassel. I think we can pretty much all agree that Coach Sing is GOING to bring in another qb to compete and I think we can all agree it won't be anyone worse than what we already have. With that said why no mention of these names for us....
Byron Leftwich: "Byron Leftwich would be my top free agent target at quarterback. He will come a fraction of Warner's price, and provides a high ceiling. This is former top-ten pick in his prime with a big arm and solid stats in his 46 career starts: 54 touchdowns, 38 interceptions, 24 wins, and a 6.7 yards-per-attempt average.
There are warts: his long delivery, lack of mobility, and injury history. But you don't make it to free agency without warts, and Warner also has plenty of shortcomings. Warner also has the perfect team around him who plays to his strengths. Leftwich could be successful if he was lucky enough to find a similar situation". So why not? what are the arguments here?
Trade Bate Mate:
"Matt Cassel will probably cost a first-round pick and change to acquire from the Patriots. Otherwise, the Patriots look prepared to keep him as expensive one-year insurance policy. Derek Anderson could probably be acquired for a mid-to-late round pick, but he won't go anywhere until Cleveland pays his roster bonus on March 15. Matt Leinart and Vince Young could also possibly be available for the right price. If your team doesn't make any free agent moves in March, they could be gearing up for a run at a trade in late April."
My thought: I would certainly not be upset with giving up a mid to late round pick for Derek Anderson. Any disagreements there? I am against Matt Cassel for a 1st rounder and I don't see the new front office making that move when we most assuredly need that pick. No on Leinart (another smith but slightly better) and no on young(and you all say vick can't throw) I'd rather have Patrick Ramsey.
So what are your thoughts on Bringing in any of these mentioned 25 backs.

I think the entire organization owes Shaun Hill one full year as the starting QB. He’s earned this shot at being the guy. I’d hate to see someone come in and JTO our team to a 2-5 start, only to be benched for Shaun Hill (who then would proceed to go 6-3).
If you are talking about back-ups, then I’d like to see a guy like Byron Leftwich. However, at this point, I’d rather see Dan Orlovsky come in and battle for the number 2 job. Just because Diamond Dan has age on his side. While his resume isn’t glamorous, let’s remember he was thrown into a starting gig for an 0-16 team last season (heck, I’d run out of my own endzone too).

Honestly? The organization doesn't owe Hill anything.
He’s getting paid about what he’s worth, and I’m sure Shaun himself would tell you that he could easily replaced. Bringing in Leftwich would likely result in exactly that.
Cassel will cost us too much – we aren’t desperate enough for a guy with almost as few games on his resume as Hill. Anderson is off the board – the Browns want to keep him. Matt Leinart and Vince Young aren’t very good, and again, we aren’t that desperate.
There are some decent QBs that will be free agents that could come in and compete for a starting job or provide a solid backup role if they don’t win it. Ramsey is a guy you mentioned. J.P. Losmam out of Buffalo is another. David Carr, Orlovsky, Ryan Fitzpatrick…some more names you might hear during the course of free agency. It all depends on how the market unfolds and how cheap these guys come. It’s possible that we won’t seek anyone and will simply address the QB position in next year’s draft – a much stronger QB class.
Personally, I’d like to see us draft Curtis Painter out of Purdue. He had a down season this past year, missing some time with a relatively minor injury. He looked great throwing the ball at the combine. He showed, in my opinion, the best accuracy of any of the quarterbacks there. He can make all the throws, and can not only hit a guy in tight coverage – but can put the ball in the spots that give the receivers an opportunity to make a play after the catch.
Had he come out of college last year, he likely would have been a 2nd round pick – but now he’s projected near the 5th round of this year’s draft. I think he’d be a steal if he drops that low.

I’d like to see Josh Freeman in as early as the 4th round, while we’re on the topic of drafting a QB.
My red flag on Painter is his completion percentage (59.9% 2008, 62.6% 2007), a QB from Purdue with similar stats who is now in the NFL? Kyle Orton… barf. Although, Painter did throw for 3800 yards in 2007 (and a good TD:INT ratio as well).
Josh Freeman’s completion percentage at KState was quite similar (58.6% 2008, 63.3% 2007), however he has more intangibles. In 2007 he had a total of 12 carries as the starting QB, but last season he ran for over 400 yards and 14 TDs (He threw for 20 and just 8 INTs). Plus he’s 6’5 238.

quick correction
Freeman had 38 carries in 12 games in 07.

~60% completion at the college level is amazing
Want another guy with similar numbers out of Purdue?
Drew Brees! =)

Hold your horses!
Lets not get carried away here… Painter is no Brees.
I watched Painter struggle through his Senior year… he looked uncomfortable, does not have the same swagger and the leadership capability as Brees did when he was at Purdue. Similar numbers??? There are plenty of Hawaii and Texas Tech QBs with similar even better numbers than Brees.

tounge-in-cheek optimism
Behind Steve Young, there’s never been a QB I’ve had more respect for than Drew Brees. There’s no question that he was on a completely different level in his days at Purdue.
That being said, I still like Painter a lot, and I think he’s a guy who could really benefit from a low-stress, learn-first situation like the one he’d have in San Francisco.

"I’d like to see Josh Freeman in as early as the 4th round"
The 4th round huh? Freeman is projected as a 1st/2nd round pick.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I'll laugh at whoever takes him that early
in the off chance that it actually happens.
by shlecko on Feb 25, 2009 12:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It'll happen
The Vikings and Tampa Bay are pretty desperate. The Niners should give him one hell of a long look if he lasts to their 2nd round pick.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

The Vikes will acquire Sage Rosenfels on Friday, so I don’t think they put QB in their first 4 rounds.
The Bucs resigned McCown, and have a new HC. It would make sense for them to consider a QB prior to round 4.
Ultimately though, I think teams with borderline QB situations (like the Niners), are going to see how things pan out this year and take a crack at next year’s stellar QB class.
by Andrew Davidson on Feb 25, 2009 5:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd argue the opposite point
Rosenfels is pretty much known commoditiy in as much as he’s known not to be that great. He’ll also be 31 when the season starts and the move reeks of a stop gap. McCown is pretty young at 27 but I don’t think he’s going to detour anybody from drafting a QB seeing as he’s a big unknown. Nobody thinks Freeman will be ready to start for a couple of years so teams like the Vikings or the Bucs can take a shot at Freeman and have the option of sitting him for a year or two.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I think no doubt that Freeman has to sit for a year to develop into a good NFL QB. A smart team will draft him and do so.
Ultimately I agree with what you said, but I don’t think the Vikes are going to be as trigger happy on taking a QB in the draft, because they can sit on Sage for a year and take their pick next season.

method, what the statement represents is that the 4th round is where I’d want the Niners to draft him, no higher. which means even if he’s a projected 1/2 rounder, he’s more of a 2-5 guy really, I wouldn’t want the guy unless he slipped to the 4th.

i'd like to see
i think that shaun hill should be out our starting qb. but, i’d like to see him compete for it with alex smith.
but going back to shaun hill, he did great for us in every one of his starts. if he stays consistent through out the whole game, he gives us a great chance to win everytime. his qb rating does drop in the third quarter, but i’m convinced he could win us games because he doesn’t make errors that’ll shoot you in the foot. plus, i think we could’ve won the nfc west this year if JTO wasn’t starting. but, thank god the things that happened transpired becuase maybe mike sing wouldn’t be our head coach right now. so, i’m pumped that he’s our coach.
but overall, i think hill should start and we should draft a qb in the later rounds and have him compete for back up with smith.

QB's
I agree with Leftwich all the way but his mobility wiill be a liability versus teams outside our division. Teams pass rush doesn’t have to be too great to [ressure him but he did look good in his few starts for the Steelers!!

Shaun Hill
Was ousted by Martz. We will never know what would have happened, if JTO didn’t start the year with out 3 lost balls.. I was there!
Martz sat Shaun down, telling him he had a sore arm?
But, here’s aquote from one of his coaches..“if you just give Shaun a chance, he will win..”
I really don’t think anyone will come in to outseat Shaun, he’s a winner..
I’ve seen it, just like in other winners..
No he is not monatan or young, but he wins games, so did they.
Winners always win

for the last time...
There was no training camp conspiracy. Hill suffered from dead arm in camp, and admitted to such. Even before that, he looked god-awful in practices in scrimmages. It was well-documented during that entire offseason that Hill took himself out of that race before the season started. These things considered, what would you have done differently in Martz’s position?

I remember
Shaun Denying he had a sore arm.

Martz offense
A very productive offense that gives up a lot of sacks. Maybe Hill struggled cuz he had guys in his face in practice being on the 2nd team//////lol
No Seriously I think the dead arm is a FLUKE either way Hill will be fine and if his arm becomes dead this offseason trade him. I like Leftwich, P White or J Freeman, but not at 2 if he slides to 3 get him. I would also take Pat White at 2 if I can gain a late 1 and 2 for our 1 and 4.

Don't worry
White will be there in the 3rd (as a total reach).
