Cornerbacks and Saftey's
So we heard about Atogwe ..gone
..and Jones ..interesting
We are unsure about Williams and Goldson..
We ARE sure about Roman, but what is the best fit?
Maybe we should think outside of the box,(again)
I know it was brought up before, but what about moving Harris to FS, and Looking for a corner?
How hard of a look have we taken at CB's, coming out of the combine, and the FA's that will be available on Friday?
At first thought, I would think, finding a saftey would be easier than a corner, but now I'm not so sure, especially, now that they are saying, the FS, is already on the team?
Any idea's on cornerbacks? ..Rookies or vets?

There are alot of good safeties that are going under the radar.. Nic Harris listed as a OLB entering the draft was at the DB workouts.. Rashad Johnson, Kevin Ellison despite his 4.82 speed he is a USC safety product, and maybe converting Alphonso Smith or Macho Man Harris to FS

Rookies
I think the 49ers could take a long look at Vontae Davis and Malcolm Jenkins. I think both may be capable of playing FS, but not immediately, and both may be able to step in and learn as CBs.
I’m pretty partial to CBs in general, but I don’t think a team can really go wrong at least considering (and maybe taking) these two guys. My only question is whether or not they’re one of the 10 best players on the board come draft time. That’s hard to say without being privy to all the info that teams’ scouts are privy to.
Jenkins may no longer be a 1st round pick. It’s possible the 49ers could land him as a safety in the 2nd round.
Anyone have an opinion on doubling up on the V.D’s on the roster? Vernon and Vontae . . . do you think Vernon is calling Singletary each night telling him to draft his brother?
Vontae in the second?
I’m pondering, would having brothers on a team, help or hurt, though?

Vontae will most likely be the top CB drafted
It sounds like Jenkins is headed to FS in the pros but he won’t make it out of the first round.
About having brothers on the team I don’t know if it would help or hurt but I might be turned off if I’m the Niners because of Vernon’s failure to live up to his potential. Whether that’s fair or not is kind of beside the point because they’ve got to be thinking about it.
Other brothers on the same NFL team. The Hendersons, EJ and Erin; the Baileys, Champ and Boss; the Palmers, Carson and Jordan. Anybody got any others?
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Unconventional thinking
Let’s sign Michael Vick and put him at safety!
Ahhhhhh, those were good times.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
that’s funny, I was at a friend’s place playing NFL Street today, and I had Vick during a game at safety. He returned an INT for a TD.
And Josh, when you say move Harris to safety, do you mean Walt? I think even with his age, his cover corner skills are still too valuable to swap him to safety (same with Nate).
I think the guy has to be Reggie Smith or Dashon Goldson if we’re talking current roster. I think I’ve made it clear I’d love to see Sean Jones put on the jersey FA-wise.
In the draft I don’t like Malcom Jenkins or Vontae Davis as safeties.

Yes, I ment Walt..
Is there another Harris at CB? I guess Al.. but I ment the 49ers.. and I think he’s still great too, I just think he has the best nose for the ball and with his quickness, would be signifigant option at FS.
..especially, if someone else could step in at corner, but that’s kind of my whole question.. I don’t think we’ve looked at all the possibilities, maybe I’m wrong?
I just keep hearing about saftey’s, nothing has happened, except there are less options, now.. just wondering if a corner might be out there, that could fill Walt’s shoes, so he could help us out at FS.
I think his experience in the league, alone, puts him ahead of any rookie saftey.

I can’t argue with that, his experience is second to none on our team. I think instead of Walt moving to FS, I’d rather see Goldson can’t a decent crack at the gig.
The reason I questioned if it was Walt that you suggested to make the move was because that was the first time I’ve ever heard the notion pondered. LOL, I wasn’t trying to be a smart a**.
Would Walt be up for entertaining the possibility, especially this late in his career?

Ronnie Lott made the switch from corner to safety, it worked out ok for him. (slight understatement)
Lott...
… made the switch very early in his career, so there is a slight difference.
I think Walt would be all for the switch if there were another corner on the roster that was better than him. I’m sure he’d do whatever it took to just get on the field.
The question becomes, who would be able to surpass Harris as a CB? I don’t think anyone on the roster can, at least not to start off the season. I don’t think the 49ers are going to take Vontae Davis or any other CB early in the draft, so I doubt a rookie will supplant him. Basically, Harris is a CB, for at least another year.
I didn't think..
..you were being a smart a$$, believe me..
The subject had been brought up, Before, but maybe not here, and maybe not offically anywhere, either, but somewhere sometime, not too long ago, it was mentioned..
I think e-mail, or posting, has a knack, for assuming a feeling of arrogance, I don’t know, but it’s so much easier to talk in person, without offending or being offended. You didn’t do either.
I don’t know if Walt wants to do it. He would have a lot more freedom to roam.. how many times could he smell the ball, but droping out of coverage, could of lost him his job?
But if he did, what CB could fill his shoes?

Walt @ FS
I’m pretty sure there was a discussion around here (maybe before you joined?) about moving him or Clements to FS. Clements was almost immediately shut down, but I think many are open to having Harris play FS, especially after this season.
