Roy Williams
"Roy Lee Williams (born August 14, 1980 in Redwood City, California) is an American football safety for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Cowboys eighth overall in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oklahoma."
Thoughts on the Niners going after Dallas Cowboys saftey Roy Williams? Sources say hes being shopped by the cowboys and will most likely be dropped if there are no takers. Hes a bay area native so we have that going for us too...
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Bad fit
According to the Fox Sports article about it:
Although regarded as a strong tackler, Williams has struggled in coverage and is no longer considered a good fit for Dallas’ 3-4 scheme under head coach Wade Phillips.

Why
We already have a SS that’s good against the run and weak against the pass. Roy Williams doesn’t offer anything more than Michael Lewis.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Agreed
In fact, he offers less.

no problem
I saw the headline in google news and figured somebody would throw it up. If you’re not sure about a guy the best bet is asking in a FanPost (in depth) or in a FanShot (quick and dirty).

Dallas native
As a Niners fan living in Dallas, I have been subjected to watch a team filled with drama and pompous egos… I must say Roy Williams is the worst cover safety I have seen in years. I’ve read somewhere that Coaches that have been with Williams in his earlier years stated that he has a hard time reading and understanding coverage. Isn’t he supposed to be a defensive back? And from what I’ve seen of him he’s SOOO eager to hit somebody that he bites on literally ALL PA passes and doesn’t have adequate recovery speed to make up for it. So… if the question is if he’s a good fit for the Niners. I adamantly say “NAY!”

The only way
I’d consider it, would be to convert him to OLB. He’s an awful coverage safety but it seems like he’d at least be a decent cover OLB and he certainly has the speed and hits hard enough to play LB. At 6 foot 225 lbs he’d be pretty undersized.
Thing A

I believe Roy said at some point last season that he’d even be willing to switch to LB in the team’s (Dallas) 3-4 system. He certainly has the coverage skills of a LB, as in, his best coverage is to smash someone in the mouth.

Granted
So he likes to hit people… but does it mean that he can get off the blocks as a MLB??? I think NOT!

Cover 2 LB
The only LB position I could possibly see Williams play is a cover 2 OLB.

Ken Norton...
… gave Bryant Young (I think) his only severe injury of his career. Not that it was intentional or anything.

Has anyone...
been watching Williams this past two seasons? I think he has declined a bit and is a terrible pass defender.

Eww...
No. I’ve seen Roy play too many times. You do not want him on your team. Can’t play the pass at all and is not an elite run-stopping SS.
