2009 NFL Free Agency: Maybe some Chris Canty with your Brandon Jones?
FOOCH'S NOTE 9:47AM: The Browns have traded Kellen Winslow to the Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks.
Now that free agency is underway, big happenings are certainly occuring. Unfortunately I will be away from my computer from 11am to 3pm pacific time at a law school function. So, I've decided to go with an open thread for now for free agency happenings. Later this afternoon/evening I'll roll out another update on today's happenings.
For now, some of the biggest news of the day, first in regards to the 49ers:
It looks like the 49ers are NOT interested in TJ Houshmandzadeh. John Clayton had reported otherwise last night, but the 49ers clarified and denied that.
Of interesting note in that Barrows link above, the 49ers are reportedly interested in defensive end Chris Canty and wide receiver Brandon Jones. I have to admit that I'm very intrigued by both players. From Canty's scouting report at ESPN:
Canty has great size and natural strength to hold the point versus the run or push the pocket rushing the passer...He has improved his hand use to separate to ball carriers and has become a more active defender in his third season
........
He is a good football player who plays with a great motor and should continue to get better as his career progresses. His outstanding size makes him a fit in both a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive schemes and his versatility gives him added value.
While I do like Ray McDonald, Chris Canty would be a nice upgrade opposite Justin Smith. Also, Ray McDonald could still provide value as strictly a passing down rusher.
As for Brandon Jones, well he's a guy I've always been intrigued by, even though he's never really put it all together. He seems to have a ton of talent, but has not figured out the way to have that breakout season. According to his scouting report:
He has ideal size to go along with above-average athleticism and average speed. He looks like he has lost a step since his knee injury in 2005 and teams do not appear very worried about his ability to go deep. He lacks a burst of speed coming out of his break and he struggles to separate from defenders.
......
He shows good body control and hand-eye coordination when he has to adjust to the ball and catch it outside his frame. He has soft, natural hands, but is not real aggressive when blocking or when going up for the ball in a crowd.
Not exactly a thrilling report. However, I remain enamored with him. Barrows indicated he has "similar dimensons" to Josh Morgan. I'd imagine the 49ers could get Jones at a relatively decent deal. Over at Instant 49ers, Maiocco indicated the 49ers wanted someone who could stretch the field a little and pointed to Jones's 4.42 Combine 40. Of course, the injury issues have seemed to slow Jones down for now.
Also, both Barrows and Maiocco have indicated the 49ers will hold a visit with Moran Norris and Redskins defensive end Demetric Evans. Evans was a bit of a backup last year and with the Redskins rolling out the cash for Albert Haynesworth, I'd imagine Evans is not going to get a payday from them. According to his scouting report:
He has good size for the position with adequate strength. He's a veteran player who is inconsistent with his hand use and recognition playing the run. He gets knocked around, while attempting to read blocking schemes.
......
He will get reached too easily at times or run behind blocks due to his late reactions...He can work down the line of scrimmage and help finish off plays on the outside...He has good strength to create movement on the inline power rush. He shows adequate hand use when attempting other moves, but lacks the top speed.
Not exactly exciting, but probably more of a depth move anyways.
Finally, for now, Maiocco has indicated that the Jets and Rams are bringing in Billy Bajema for a visit. I'd imagine he's not long for this world as a 49er. Speaking of the Jets, they also are hosting a visit for Bart Scott of the Ravens. Rex Ryan was his coach in Baltimore so that is probably a nice bonus.
I'll update this thread when I can, but I strongly encourage you to post any links and thoughts about free agency in here.
Some solid insider updates that probably carry a little bit of weight:
FOOCH'S NOTE 9:30: We've got the Rossum re-signing posted here.

Marques Douglas cut by Raven and Winslow traded to Bucs
could Douglas be coming back at the right price? personally I don’t want him back as he isn’t any better than what we have and will only hinder the development of McDonald and Balmer

Nolan's not around
Even though Singletary was with him in Baltimore, maybe no more Nolan means the Ravens-to-49ers pipeline will get shut down.

I hope so...
maybe if some of their starting talent would have followed him, much like Scott is doing with Ryan with the Jets, but all we got was their leftovers. Fields is likely following Nolan to Denver.

Fields
I don’t think Nolan really liked Fields. If I recall, he always thought he was best suited for RDE, but what did the 49ers go and do? They brought in Justin Smith. McCloughan was quoted recently saying that Fields is an NT. So apparently Nolan didn’t like Fields at NT?

So will Douglas end up with the Broncos then?
Dumervil may be an ideal candidate to play OLB in Nolans 3-4 assuming he can drop into coverage, Williams could play Mike, Crowder RE? so where does that leave Boss Bailey and Woodyard?

I could...
… definitely see Douglas following Nolan, as I think the both of them have serious respect for one another.

List ....
i have been slack on keeping up with signings bc of work but i just checked the internet and saw a list and on that list i like these guys…
Safety
1. Darren Sharper- veteran that can come in and play fs… dont know if he wants to retire but we could wait for a more safety talent draft.
2. Sean Jones- a younger option
3. Terrence Holt- could compete
WR
1. Reggie Williams – never reached his talent level but is a big guy and we lack that on our roster.
2. Devery Henderson
3. Laveranues Coles- speed …. but seems to wine a lot.
QB- i think we should part ways with smith and o’sullivan…. that being said i say we sign someone and draft someone.
1. Rex Grossman- has an arm for days, never had the talent around him or the offensive scheme that was easy to succeed in.
2. Kyle boller- a veteran option
Chris Canty- I have expressed i think DE is our last need but i like this guy a lot.
Spikes- If we dont resign him i think i might drive from ohio to SF to open hand smack someone in the face.
Others
Stacy Andrews
Khalif Barnes
Ahmad Carrol

I don’t want Grossman or Boller. Rex Grossman, Sex Cannon that he might be, is Rex Grossman., Kyle Boller has had one good year since leaving high school.
If we’re taking on a project, we might as well keep Smith.

interested in Tony Curtis
The 49ers also are showing interest in Cowboys tight end Tony Curtis, according to Curtis’ agent. Curtis, who just turned 26, started six games for the Cowboys last year as a blocking tight end. He caught eight passes for 32 yards. He’d likely replace Billy Bajema as the team’s designated blocking tight end. Curtis, however, would be a bigger threat in the passing game. He joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Portland State in 2005, the same year the 49ers selected Bajema in the seventh round. Curtis is from Seaside, Ca. Curtis was a restricted free agent, but when Dallas didn’t not offer him a tender, he became an unrestricted free agent.
Bajema, meanwhile, is attracting interest from the 49ers, Rams and Jets. The Rams also are interested in signing Curtis. Curtis has not yet scheduled a visit with the 49ers.

It looks like we got Norris back:
MURS for President!!!!!!!

10:33 a.m. : PFT is reporting that the 49ers have agreed to terms with fullback Moran Norris on a three-year deal that’s worth $5 million contract, with $1.5 million guaranteed. Norris is officially that “square-backed guy who will bloody some noses” that new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he wanted.

A very good deal...
… as it still makes him very expendable if he doesn’t fit a couple years down the line.

FA
Great to get Spikes, Morris, and Rossum, but I’d have to pass on B Jones from the titans we need a wideout as fast as V davis or faster or someone taller than jones or as tall and no knee history. and a definite no on canty
by rlott#42 on Feb 27, 2009 5:32 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
From what I understand...
… Jones is as fast as Davis, as he ran a sub 4.4 40 before his draft. Of course, it’s been a while since then, though.

one by one
canty = approve
jones = disapprove
evans = disapprove
by Florida Danny on Feb 27, 2009 7:02 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
explain?
why disapprove of jones? I did a short workup on him from DVOA database – 32nd in DVOA of receivers with over 50 targets. 66% catch rate (above TEN comp rate of 58%), which is good for 13th in that group. His 7.5 ypa is decidedly midrange, but not surprising considering it was the titans. I mean, he’s not going to be a burner, but he’s a solid possession guy, used to run blocking, and was efficient in producing first downs from the slot. So, explain yourself!
