First Round TE traded... can this be VD's Future?

According to Espn the Browns traded their #6 Overall pick in the 2004 draft, Kellen Winslow to the Bucs. Obviously they did not see enough production from their starting TE to keep him around for another year. This brings to mind another high draft pick at the TE position who has not met expectations from his team or fans. Let's remember Winslow only played 2 games his rookie and sophomore seasons so they have played the same amount of years. To compare stats:

                                    KELLEN WINSLOW                                  VERNON DAVIS

                                               6 yrs                                                            4yrs

                      (played 2 games from 2004-2005)

Games:                                      44                                                             37

Receptions:                             219                                                          103

Yards:                                    2,459                                                       1,132

Touchdowns:                             11                                                             9

With Delanie Walker as a back up and potential starter can VD be seen as trading bait in 2010 if he has decent numbers in the 2009 or 2010 season as his contract expires? All eyes will be on VD this year, if his production does not improve look for history to repeat itself and the niners be rewarded with a couple of draft picks for the 2010 or 2011 draft.

i don’t think they will let him go i think they might restructure his contract but he is still a threat at TE and he is a very good blocker.

Davis...

… and Walker are not comparable at all. If the 49ers let Davis go in favor of Walker, they are straying from Singletary’s vision of a “run-first” offense, as Walker has really no blocking skills to speak of.

Davis, while he has been disappointing, has been a pretty good blocker. It is also possible that he’s had things working against him. He’s had useless QBs throwing him the ball, who on top of that have offensive coordinators that have schemed Davis out of the passing game at times.

I think the 49ers would more than definitely continue to give him the chance to prove himself.

Ok, but...

As a 1st round draft pick, expectations are high. In my opinion, I expected more from a day one pick, regardless of the type of QB throwing to you, Tony Gonzalez (drafted 13th overall) has not have Hall of Famers throwing to him (Grbac, Green, Gannon, Huard, Croyle and Thigpen) so that argument is flaw.

There’s a reason why Coach Sing, sent his ass to the locker room, he has plenty of heart but is not there mentally. Also consider the “need” at the TE position in the upcoming draft, yes I know Bajema is ultimately gone, but they might be considering the light at the end of the tunnel in 2011.

A blocking TE can be drafted in round 4 even 7 why pay a first round TE so much money when his contract expires to see his production fluctuate. I rather have Walker as your receiving TE and another TE with decent hands and able to block on the other end, instead of an overpriced TE, who has little to show for who showboats when he catches a 5 yard pass there for years to come.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

I agree.

You don’t pay a blocking TE the kind of money the 49ers pay Davis. However, he’s under contract and they’re on the hook for his bonus money, so why not let him play out the contract to see if he can even show a remote sense of living up to his potential? The 49ers really don’t have anything to lose, really, other than probably a few later round picks that the 49ers can’t really seem to make anything out of anyway.

agreed!

Let him play for the next two seasons… I am not suggesting to look for a trade in the coming days, but think of trading their hyped up TE for future draft picks before his contract expires.

"A blocking TE can be drafted in round 4 even 7 why pay a first round TE so much money"

So why would anybody want to trade for him?

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Because of his "matchup nightmare" capability

Why would the Bucs want to trade for a injury plagued TE… hype!

Beacuse of his "matchup nightmare" capability?

I’ve yet to see it.

You really think the reasoning for the Bucs trading for Winslow is based on hype? Wow, that’s pretty damn foolish on someone’s part. Winslow actually produces in the passing game when he’s healthy which is a far cry from what Davis does.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Davis

One thing about Davis is he’s more versataile than the 49ers offense shows. Watching Kellen Winslow II go to the Yucs, I thought why isn’t V Davis a receiver? He’s the fastest player on the team adn a mismatch to every corner in the league. Sounds like Burress with speed to me. No way we trade Davis, that would be the worst move ever. Plus I think he’ll feel bad for not living up to expectations but our offense and coaches can take most blame for that.

what I mean, when I say........ I think he'll feels bad!!

is when its extension time we will get him cheaper than the progression on his first overblown contract would usually result!!

Winslow is a horrible blocker.

I declare you Sanchez.

They won’t, his value’s too low. I think the Niners believe in Davis, to a certain extent, and think he can be a lot better than he is right now. But the rest of the league definitely doesn’t see him as an elite-level guy, whereas I think KW2 is up there if he’s healthy. The Niners think he’s worth more than the rest of the league does, he has a fairly hefty contract, there’s no way he’s getting traded unless he has a breakout year.

They won't trade Davis

Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.

differences between the two:

Winslow is actually good.
Winslow had trade value.
Winslow actually generated interest around the league.

These are facts that do not, and would not apply to Vernon Davis.

Davis can block

I think his blocking abilities are way underrated. If he works on not giving up on routes he would have had about 15 more catches last year and 3 or 4 more touchdowns. He’ll be fine. He’s a man.
