Cutler?

Just saw a rumor on the espn.com NFC West blog that Cutler is infuriated that Devner's new coach tried to swing Cassel by trading Cut to TB in a 3 way deal. Cutler now wants to seek a trade...if Cassel is worth a 2nd rd pick, what will it take to get Cutler? Maybe a 2 plus a second day pick? As a pro bowl qb with only 2 full years as a starter under his belt, he's obviously of more value than a guy like Thigpen or a 1 year fix like Warner. Plus given the fact that he's both a product of the WCO and has a rocket of an arm to boot, I'd rank him higher than Cassel.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

the more i think about it,

the more id be willing to swap 1st rd picks and give them a 3rd for their troubles to bring onboard a proven qb of the future

hopefully after cassel’s trade a 2nd rd pick is the barometer for elite qbs, but then again the lions did manage to get a 1st rd pick out of the roy williams deal

Not a bad trade

Our 10 is worth 1300, Denver’s 12th pick is worth 1200. Our 3rd rounder is worth 220. So basically the difference between our 1st round picks and the 220 from our 3rd round pick means it would cost us a low 2nd round pick, number 57 for Cutler. Somehow I don’t think they would go for that. Now if we threw in Alex Smith and our 3rd rounder and we kept our 1st round choice then that would be a fair trade.

This would be a great idea!

Alex Smith plus a #3 for Cutler.. I say we call Denver tomorrow right away!!

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

After further consideration...

and after this post by Dre

Are you guys forgetting who the defensive co-ordinator is in Denver? McDaniels would probably take whatever advice Nolan has on Smith, and I doubt Nolan is talking about daisies and butterflies when regarding Alex Smith.

it got me thinking… what if niners take Sanchez at ten, trade for Cutler and send one of Nolan’s guy Franklin.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Not what McDaniels thinks

Rumor had it Denver was going to get a first round plus for Culter.

DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BRING CUTLER TO THE NINERS

The guy is worth whatever it takes. He is the perfect franchise qb IMO. Any chance the niners can somehow pry him from denver?

No chance

In my opinion, there is no way. McDaniels is coming from New England, and knows Cassell. That’s why he was trying to trade for him. The organization as a whole is high on Cutler, and they would have to get a quality starter QB in return. That’s what would be missing from any offer we could make.

It’s also important to recognize that the Patriots had one of the highest payrolls in the NFL (of which a huge chunk belonged to Cassell’s salary). The trade with KC was clearly a cost-cutting move. We should not start using that as the standard to determine the trade value of a QB. Denver’s been a big player in the FA market, so they clearly are not concerned about the current economy.

I agree with you on this one, G. It seems just reactionary from Cutler that he suddenly isn’t the Golden Boy after the year that he had. He’s a young guy, he’s only been on one team, and the idea of being traded and somehow “less valuable” than Cassel shook him a little. Basically, he’s gotten his feelings hurt. I imagine this blowing over in a couple of days…

but if it doesn’t, the Niners should keep their eyes open. He’s only 25 years old, and still hasn’t peaked. He’s definitely shown more potential and polish than any QB in his draft class. He’s never had a back the quality of Frank Gore behind him, and that can only help. And if Sanchez is still on the board at 10, I would make a call to Denver to ask about the #10 pick for Cutler, straight-up. (If you’re thinking QB, who would you rather have leading your team in the short-term and near future, Cutler or Sanchez?)

On the Niners’ side, I think the biggest disadvantage for him is Coach Singletary. This is already supposed to be a “smashmouth” football team come next year, so Cutler’s experience in the West Coast Offense is a wash. And Singletary already thinks of Shaun Hill as a “Gamer” (due to the much publicized “leave me in, Coach” game) while this episode probably makes Cutler look like a whiner in his eyes.

Had the offseason played differently, this team could have Shanahan as its Head Coach and Cutler as its QB. I like the direction this team is headed in, but imagine that

Not sure I get the logic here...
If you’re thinking QB, who would you rather have leading your team in the short-term and near future, Cutler or Sanchez?

I’m fairly certain your answer to that question would be Cutler. My answer would be Cutler too. Would anyone on this site choose Sanchez over Cutler? I assume the Niners would also choose Cutler over Sanchez.

So why would the Broncos choose Sanchez over Cutler?

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Exactly

Cassel was the real cog in this potential deal. No Cassel, no Cutler. The Broncos are going to demand a starter quality QB, who McDaniels thought Cassel, in return for Culter (plus at least a first round draft pick). Now this is a none story, Culter isn’t leaving Denver he has zero leverage to demand a trade.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Wait… so the Broncos are trying to trade Cutler, and now because of that Cutler is demanding to be traded? Something seems off about that.

The Broncos tried to trade Cutler

In a 3 team deal that would have netted them Cassel in addition to drafts pick. Cutler found out and is now pissed that the Broncos would try to trade him. Seems, irrational but reasonable.

Yeah, it makes sense, especially when you lay it out like that.

At first it just kind of reminded me of something like this:

“Hey Cut, we’re trying to trade you.”

“Yeah, well you better trade me!”

“Wait, what?”

But it does make sense.

by warriorfan4life on Mar 1, 2009 3:19 AM PST reply actions

trade

The reason they were willing to do that kind of deal is because they’d get a potential starting QB in return. Unless they really want Alex Smith or Shaun Hill, we’d have to find a third team to do that deal.

by David Fucillo on Mar 1, 2009 12:03 PM PST reply actions

trade 1st round pick

yeah they probably won’t have interest in hill or smith, but if we include this years first round pick at 10, they can still get sanchez or stafford more then likely. There is a chance that one of them wont slip that far, but with KC getting Cassell, the chances of Sanchez slipping to 10 is pretty good. in order for denver to be interested enough, im sure we are going to have to give up more then just the number 10… but if we can land cutler it would be well worth it.

by norcal225 on Mar 1, 2009 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

broncos

I think also in going after Cassel they were gonna get a guy who had shown he could cut it in the NFL (if at least for a season) and that’s quite a bit different than grabbing someone in the draft, even with a first round pick.

by David Fucillo on Mar 1, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions

the risk of a quarterback in the first couple of picks is huge… if anyone should know that it would be us. but hopefully cutler is so sour about it he pressures them into giving him up. plus the broncos would have the 12th pick too…10 and 12 they could get some good players. but your right, people want the sure bet, hopefully they feel like the relationship in denver is so bad they might bite for something like that.

by norcal225 on Mar 1, 2009 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

Culter has no power

How many players within the last couple of years have demanded a trade? And how many of been granted their wish. Ultimately ownership holds all the cards. Culter can demand a trade but Denver isn’t going to deal him and Culter has no other option but to play for the Broncos.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Mar 1, 2009 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

He can hold out.

Really, it seems like the NFL is the one league in which the players DO hold a hell of a lot of power.

Players hold power when the Union is powerful and the league office is weak. Football is kind of balanced. If you want a league where players hold a hell of a ton of a lot of power, look at MLB. That sport has the strongest players union in organized sports and one of the weakest league offices in organized sports.

Cutler update

This was up in a FanPost by bignerd, but I think it’s better for now in here and the Cutler thread:

Apparently the fall out on this trade has just begun. Not only does it appear Denver was indeed shopping Cuttler to aquire Cassel but the Patriots took the lesser deal. The writers at ESPN seemed somewhat appalled that the Patriots accepted the Chiefs 2nd round pick over the Broncos 1st round pick (12th overall in the draft).

I’ll let the article discuss more of the drama. I wonder if the league office is going to look into this, because it seems a little out bounds to how the league usually operates.

Why would Pats turn down 12th pick for Cassel? – ESPN.com

by David Fucillo on Mar 1, 2009 2:38 PM PST reply actions

Hey, no problem with moving it.

I think it’s an issue for 2 reasons.

If the Patriots value 2nd round picks more than 1st round like picks than why didn’t they inform Denver who I’m sure would have been willing to sacrifice multiple 2nd rounds picks to complete the trade.

Also, the article alleges their might have been an agreement between Pioli and Belichick. Isn’t it collusion for the Patriots to franchise Cassel only to insure he ends up on the Chiefs roster?

by bignerd on Mar 1, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

Now we can see what A Smith is worth??

Resign him and send him to his buddy Nolan. He was great in a spread offense which is what the Denver passing game will be, I do remember Brady being in a Shotgun quite often. I’d give up a 1st for their 2nd and 3rd to save cap miney for a run at Merriman next year or Casey Hampton. We should definitely be after Cutler. The threat of his arm will be great for gore and vice versa

It has been reported that the Broncos just signed DT Ronald Fields. Did he do much to impress you guys last year?

Just to let you guys know.............

McDaniels and Xanders have both gone on record as saying they were approached about trading Cutler and nixed the proposals. They are now saying that they aren’tplanning to trade Cutler and never had any intention of trading him. We at MHR have been bantering about this all weekend. All we really know for sure is that the Broncos answered the phone said no and Jay is now pissed off. LOL it’s been a woldride in Denver this weekend.

We gotta get nastier on D!!!!!!!!!
