Fishing Boat with NFL Players Missing (UPDATED 3/2 12:37pm)
From ABC comes a scary story out of Florida. Three NFL players are on a fishing boat that is missing off the Gulf Coast in Clearwater.
One reportedly plays for the Lions, and another plays for the Raiders.
A 21-foot boat with four passengers left from Clearwater Pass at 6:30 a.m. EST on Saturday. It was due to return after dark but never arrived.
A friend called the Coast Guard at 1:30 a.m. EST on Sunday and reported the boat missing.
Per the report, officials say that the Gulf waters are extremely choppy and that it’s believed the boat is in distress.
Scary Story here, it says one for the Lions and one for the Raiders, be the third one 49ers or not, let's hope this turns out for the better.
Scary stuff indeed.
FOOCH'S NOTE: 5-0 opened another thread but I'm just moving it to this to keep it in one thread:
UPDATE: According to FOX 13 in Tampa, Smith, Cooper, and Bleakley were wearing life jackets. Let's hope the Coast Guard can find them as well.
UPDATE II: Schuyler is in serious condition, but he was conscious and had a life vest on when the Coast Guard rescued him. Apparently the boat was anchored when it flipped over. Schuyler clung on to the boat until he was rescued. There are still no updates on the other three missing men.
UPDATE III: From FOX News:
Schuyler reportedly told authorities that all of the boaters were alive and together at about 2 a.m., but somewhow got separated.
A Coast Guard spokesman told FOX News that they were optimistic the remaining boaters, who are believed to be wearing life jackets, would be found alive. Weather conditions had also calmed down.

Actually
Corey Smith played with us.
Smith, 29, had 30 tackles, including three sacks, and an interception in 12 games last season for the winless Lions. Smith, who is 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, also played for the San Francisco 49ers and played college ball at North Carolina State.

Who cares?
Seriously, stuff like this goes on all the time but now we’re supposed to care because these guys play proffesional football?

Good luck with that

I care insofar as I hope that they are okay, the same way that I would care if any of these other incidences were broadcast to my attention. They’re getting attention because they’re football players, but they should still get our best wishes because they’re people.

you get lost at sea, so nobody will care.

That's the whole point
Outside of my family I wouldn’t expect anybody to care.

Well, thank you
You are a more compasionate and caring person than I. I’d like to apologize to everyone who is genuining concerned over the fate of these missing people for taking this thread in a direction that it didn’t need to go.

Your point makes no sense to me. Sure, people die all the time, but that doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t care. And it’s not like these are three people who died of old age, or some unavoidable disease. Freak accidents that occur to young people IS something that people should care about. I’m almost embarrassed to cheer for the same team as you.
by Blank x2 on Mar 3, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why?
Because I don’t care to hear about people gone missing on fishing trip, who I have zero connection to and know absolutely nothing about, you’re almost embarrassed to root for the Niners because I do? So you must care, and by care I mean care enough that you’re actually provoked to doing something about it, about every freaking accident that happens in the Bay Area, in California, in the United States, in the world? Props to you then, the world is a much better place due to your proactiveness in supporting the families of freak accident victims around the world.

It took me a while, but I understand what you’re saying.
In a very tight nutshell, you’re pretty much just saying “It’s may certainly be a sad thing, but it’s not a thing that makes me sad.”
And that should make perfect sense to anybody who’s taking a second to try to understand you.

There are plenty of 49ers fans...
… to be embarrassed about. I’m sure somewhere out there there are wife beaters, killers and various other kinds of 49ers fans.
One thing is for sure, though: 49ers fans don’t eat puppies (or is it babies?). Whatever it is that Dodgers fans do!

Who cares?
Seriously, you should care methodrampage because they are human beings – football players or not!!
If they were average joes the story could still make the news cos its newsworthy, and if it doesn’t, well thats a bad indictment on the media and the world we live in nowadays.

Sorry but I'm a realist
People die every day, I don’t shed a teir when do unless their family (or really close). Go ahead and waste your time feeling bad for every human being that dies, 99.9% whom you don’t even know and how many times have you felt remorse for people who have died that haven’t had their death published in a newspaper. Seriously, get off your moral high horse, what have you done to appreciate these or any other “insignificant” deaths? You send flowers to the families of every person that dies everyday? Doubt it. So, basically your reaction is the same mine, you read of it and you go about your day-to-day life. The only difference is that I admit that I don’t give a [shite decorum] while you play the fool and act like you do.

I simply prefer the preservation of human life. It doesn’t send me into a wild depression when it goes unpreserved, but I still pay it a heartful respect when it comes to or is brought to my attention. I can’t do anything about the cases that don’t come to my attention, and it would be psychotic for me to try, but so long as I’m aware of something I can keep my heart in it without being a bleeding heart about it.

Good point
Look, I would never wish tragedy upon anyone but I really don’t care if 4 football, or non-football, players go missing while on a fishing trip off the coast of Florida because to me it’s not a national news story. I should have just kept my opinion to myself and avoided this thread. I just think professional athletes, actors, and such garnish too much public attention.

i hope
they are found safe and sound, alive and well, and methodrampage i shed a tear but i have concern, and these men ain’t (for all we know) dead, you see people die everyday and you feel sad and greatfull that it wasn’t you, but it’s different when you have know idea the whereabouts of these young men. And naw i don’t read it and go on, i read it, think about it for some time, and try to forget about it, but it still touches my heart in a deep way. Let these men be found alive and safe.

Best of luck to these guys, and my prayers are with them… but… Bermuda Triangle, anyone?

Disheartening
CLEARWATER, Florida (CNN) — The Coast Guard has found an overturned boat with one person clinging to it in waters where authorities have been searching for four missing boaters, the Coast Guard said Monday.
The missing boaters include two NFL players.
The Coast Guard said it does not know whether the boat it found is the one it has been searching for, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer James Harless.
The identity and condition of the person found with the boat was not known, Harless said.

Update from user 5-0 FanPost
The Coast Guard has recovered one person after finding him clinging to a capsized boat about 38 miles west of Tampa Bay. The person that was found is Nick Schuyler, and he is alive and talking, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Nick Schuyler is alive and talking, said his dad, Stuart Schuyler, who was briefed by the Coast Guard. Schuyler is being taken to Tampa General Hospital.
Stuart Schuyler said he has been praying and frantically awaiting word since Sunday. Asked how he feels now, Schuyler said: “Like God heard me.”
No word yet on what happened to Corey Smith, Marquis Cooper, or William Bleakley, if they found the boat then that means they are probably still in the water they were all reportedly wearing life jackets.

I hope on everything that they find these guys. This is one of the times when football has to take a back seat. I’m hoping they find all three of the others, alive and well. I hope their families don’t have to go through the worse.

Links necessary because...
The Coast Guard is still saying only the one guy has been found.
According to Cooper’s agent, Troy Asmus, a Tampa TV station erroneously told the family that Cooper had been located. The Coast Guard, at an afternoon news conference, said only one man had been found.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

It's already nighttime
on the east coast.
Naval tradition says 72 hours before it’s too late. They’ve been in the water about 50 now.
They are football players too, so they’re in tip top shape with lifevests on.
But to find them in night after all this—— damn.

It's not looking so good now
One those emergency GPS distress devices would have made this situation moot. Expensive, but probably a must for all ocean boaters

Before locating Schuyler and the boat, the U.S. Coast Guard said it had searched 16,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico. Now search crews say the search for the remaining three men has been concentrated to a 2,000 square mile area closer to where the boat was last located.
