QB Conundrum
Fooch already posted a Fan Post about the QB battle but I had some questions of my own and as I was writing my comment I realized it was a little too much for a just a comment. Hence:
I think it's wrong to count out Huard from the initial QB comp, in a way. I think the chances of him starting are very slim, he's like the anti-JTO (how many of you just smiled real big when you read that?). Instead of being a boom or bust kinda guy, you know exactly what you're getting from him and that's above average drive control but not a whole lot else. Initially that sounds exactly like the kind of QB that Singletary wants but it won't be Huard for a couple of reasons. First, he's old, and though this may sound unfair, the saying goes with new coaches come new QBs. Singletary will be looking for "his" guy and a 36 yo QB won't be him. It could be different if that 36 yo QB was jurt Warner, but Huard doesn't have 2 MVPs. I like Huard a lot though, he's exactly what you'd want from one of the 3 QBs on your roster: an experienced vet who can help teach the young-uns and will perform very reliably on gameday, doing exactly what you ask of him; he can step in and not lose games and manage very well. The way I see it the other two QB slots should be filled with an up-and-comer, someone who has talent and potential who you can groom for later and an established starter. Obviously, this is an ideal situation. Sometimes the starter is the up-and-comer, sometimes you have two projects as backups. However, the Niners seem to be somewhere in the middle of all this. Shaun Hill is somewhere between established starter and reliable backup vet, we can't really know until he's played this season. Huard is the same but much more of the reliable backup vet mold. Alex Smith (and I know this will be debated) is somewhere between up-and-comer and...3rd QB. Again, we can't know until he can actually play another full season. The crux of this issue, for me, is that most of the Niners Nation (both the blog and the general fan base) seem to be clamoring for a QB to be taken somewhere in the draft. This would give the niners 4 QBs, begging the question, do the niners take an extra QB into the season? Or, if not, who's the odd man out? If we draft a QB and, presumably, he doesn't suck so much that we straight up cut him, do we risk having him ride it out on the practice squad? Does the reliable, but old, backup get shown the door. Does Alex Smith finally get labeled a bust, and get the boot out of SF, reduced contract and all? Does Shaun Hill magically fall out of favor and not make it to the regular season (unlikely, I know, but I'm running through all the options). Anyways, I find this quandry to be intruiging...
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Unless a hell of a steal falls into our lap
I don’t think we should look for a quarterback in the draft. I think we can work with what we have this year, then look for a QB in next year’s draft.
Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?
yeah
we can wait for one year see what all 3 QB’s bring and then if they dont live up to expectations then next year draft a colt mccoy, tebow, bradford?
but he's mobile and left handed
2ND COMING UV STEVE YUNG!
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
Deal
If people stop mentioning Pat White in conversations about professional football as well.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

By the way.....
White’s pro day was today, and guess what? He did ALL QB drills. No catching. No route running. No returning. QB drills. And apparently the word in Morgantown is that some of the NFL scouts are really starting to consider his potential at QB. I love the fact that he has it in his head that he is a quarterback.
Now if all of the haters on these message boards and Todd McShay would do the same, the world might be better off.
Of course...
… he would aim at becoming a QB. The value of a QB is infinitely higher than that of a WR/RB
LOL, O RLY?!
A league source tells us that West Virginia quarterback Pat White was ready and willing to run pass routes during Thursday’s Pro Day workout in Morgantown, but that Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart wouldn’t let him do it.

Huard
In most people’s eyes (and I’m pretty sure the 49ers, too), Huard is indeed a 3rd string QB. Having him start would do VERY little for the team in the present as well as the long-run. He isn’t much better than Hill at this point in his career, so why would he get the start over Hill? This is not to mention that Hill will still be under contract for at least next season, so he provides a little more of a “short-term” solution.
If Hill wins the job and gets hurt, the 49ers would be doing their future a huge disservice if they don’t at least play Alex Smith to see what they can get out of him, still. I know, I know. They’ve been down this road before, but it’ll be hard to convince anyone that playing Huard instead of Smith is a viable scenario.
As for taking a QB in the draft, I definitely think the 49ers should keep their eyes open for one. They don’t HAVE to take one, but they should definitely look at a few. If they take one, Huard will be the odd-man out, unless the QB was drafted in the 6th or 7th and can safely be stashed on the practice squad. Why so quick to cut Huard? His contract dictates it to be so.
Please please please
Is this the same guy that lost his job to Thigpen. D Huard should only be considered a 3rd option at qb. This is Smith and Hill’s battle unless Cutler is brought here by some amazing fluke.
