How About Reggie Smith at Safety?
Last year's draft produced some interesting picks. Some were good picks and some were very intriguing. Chilo Rachal could be a starter at some point this coming season, Josh Morgan could be the starting WR if he has a good training camp, Cody Wallace could be Heitmann's replacement at C in two years. Balmer is a diiferent story. I am not sure he could become a decent NFL player. Larry Grant could have been a good player but I think the numbers at LB was against him being a 7th Rounder.
Reggie Smith, from college football powerhouse Oklahoma, could be a very good safety for the team. He has experience at strong safety and CB in college and that could be enough for the team to throw him in the battle for the starting FS position. He has good size at 6' and 196 lbs. He was also a 5 star player coming out of HS (Santa Fe HS Edmond, OK). His 40 yard time at the workouts last year might have affected his draft status as one of the top prospects at CB, coming in at 4.68 and 4.65. He could be an ideal FS, like a Merton Hanks or even a Ronnie Lott. Not a lot of speed but a lot of football instincts.
This is not an anti Dashon Goldson post. It is merely an opinion to somehow make a team with a need in a position to look at other options. Besides, soon, someone has to take over Michael Lewis at the other safety spot. I think having Smith do an OJT this coming season could be very benificial, not only for Smith but also for the team.

Chilo Rachal could be a starter?
He IS the starter.
Josh Morgan IS our best WR. I can’t see Hill, Battle, Jones or Ziegler knocking him out of the #2 spot if Bruce returns. If Bruce doesn’t return, there’s no doubt Morgan will be a starter.
Cody Wallace was a reach, but he’s learning behind a great OL leader in Heitmann. Plus, Heitmann is versatile, and may have to play G if injuries occur, and having a sturdy back-up at center is almost a must these days.
Kentwaan Balmer, well, to say the least no one can be impressed by his rookie campaign. However, its too early to define his status and a lot will be told by his second season.
Reggie Smith had questions about where he’d play when he was drafted. The team should’ve given him an identity immediately, and they did. They chose CB, but the guy never played. I think making him a FS straight out of college would have been the better choice, but like Balmer, a lot will be told about Smith based on his second year with the club.

+1
also, and correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the niners work him at safety just a little bit during camp and then move him back to corner?

"Josh Morgan IS our best WR"
Wow, I guess everyone of those 20 receptions must have really made an impression on you.

Stats
Can be used to sway an argument either way, but what the stats don’t show is his staph infection.
And also, the statement isn’t as much of a praise for Morgan, but a knock on our WR Corps. What WR is better than Morgan on the Niners? Isaac Bruce, but is he coming back?
You can throw around the 20 receptions stat all you want, but the year Jerry had 7 catches, he was still our best WR. Morgan played in 10 games, had 300 yards receiving, 3 TDs and a 16 ypc average. Maybe not the best STATS, but he’s still our best WR.

"Oh what a bonanza!"
that kind of ridiculous call is exactly why I’ll miss Joe Starkey

Morgan might be our best receiver
I’m not gonna argue that point… but, I don’t think two highlight videos are sufficient evidence to prove a receiver is the best on the team. Otherwise Brandon Lloyd would have been our best receiver.

Ok, I'll play
Ah, no. Two highlights does not the best WR on the 49ers make.
Go ahead; use stats to sway the argument the other way. Use stats to prove that Morgan is the best WR on the 49ers. This should be interesting. I believe Florida Danny pointed out that DVOA points to Morgan actually being on of the worst WR on the Niners last year. Go ahead an point to his 16 ypc average which was obviously skewed by a small sample size. But feel free to point out how 32 yards on 2 receptions per game makes Morgan the best WR on the Niners roster (over an entire season that would have been 32 receptions for 480 yards, can I make my Pro Bowl nomination now?).
Morgan has potential, I’ll give him that but he’s still highly unproven with little to no professional track record. If you want to consider Morgan the best WR on the Niners, go right ahead, you just have very little support for such a notion and in all honesty that would put the Niners’ WR corp at the bottom of the league.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I agree with this.
Using his injury (or injuries) as an excuse as to why his production is down and thus he couldn’t prove he was the best WR is a farce. The guy has potential, but until he can prove that he’ll provide the same results over a 16-game span, he’s still a VERY unproven commodity (talented or untalented).

Fine points
but I asked, who is better than Morgan on the 49ers aside from Bruce? Bruce is 50-50 at returning. Tell me who is better than Morgan on the team.
I never said Morgan was a pro bowler. I never said he was awesome. I said he is our best WR on the roster, and he is. Tell me the better player on the roster, and I’ll argue against it.
You can use Florida Danny’s DVOA stats until you’re blue in the face, but I never asked about that. I asked who is the better WR? Did you find any other highlights of 49ers WR not named Bruce? You guys don’t like watching highlights? He’s got more than 2, I just simply choice two fine examples. I think you need to relax a bit, and enjoy what we have, not get red in the face trying to argue a point that I’m not up for defending, because I never claimed Morgan to be anything but OUR BEST WR. Not THE BEST WR in the NFL, not a pro bowl player, not anything but our best WR. I said who is better, and you continued with the stats argument instead of addressing who on OUR roster is the better WR not named Bruce?

Hill and Morgan.
I think the two of them are kind of at similar platforms right now. Both have shown some flashes, but neither have had a chance to prove they’re consistent. I guess your comment was a little confusing, because you say he IS the best WR and then you instantly make him a #2.
If you’re arguing he is the best WR on the roster, then you have to include Bruce (as he hasn’t retired, so he is returning by all assumptions until otherwise stated). If you’re arguing he’s the best #2, the point should be made a little clearer, instead of hiding behind some rash statement.

how much clearer can this be:
I can’t see Hill, Battle, Jones or Ziegler knocking him out of the #2 spot if Bruce returns. If Bruce doesn’t return, there’s no doubt Morgan will be a starter?

Context
But you say that AFTER you already claim “Josh Morgan IS our best WR.”

I made the comment
on the basis that Bruce is a coin flip for returning. My coin turned up tails at the time, and therefore Bruce was not on the team.

The best WR on the Niners?
Outside of Bruce, I’d say Battle has proven a hell of a lot more than Morgan. Then I’d throw Morgan, Hill and Jones all in the same boat as none of them have really distinguished themselves from each other. Morgan might have the highest ceiling but he still hasn’t done [site decorum] at the NFL level and to pronounce him the best WR on the 49ers is premature because it’s based on what? 20 receptions? So based on what I’ve seen from last year Bruce, Battle and Bryant Johnson were all better WRs than Morgan.
Really the burden of proof in on you as you make the claim that Morgan is the best WR on the Niners and you haven’t proven or backed that claim up at all. I also, don’t care if you asked for the DVOA stats or not because whether you like it or not they do represent another metric that doesn’t support your idea.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I used to think that
But Method just keeps it real. He is one of the best posters on this blog.
That being said, to continue this complete hijacking of the FanPost, Bruce is our best WR, of course. If he doesn’t come back, I agree that Battle is the best. If potential determined the best player on our team, then Alex Smith would be our best QB (which some people are already arguing).
We didn’t win 5 Super Bowls with potential talent. No one does. While I think Morgan has a tremendous upside, being annointed as THE #1 WR on the team is jumping the gun slightly. Lets wait til at least Week 5 for claims like that.
Blind devotion.

If...
Morgan is the best WR on the team, maybe the 49ers should consider drafting a WR for the 10th overall pick.

I agree
I’m sure I agree with that statement indeed. and I think if Crabtree does fall to 10, the Niners should take him. If Maclin is there at 10, him too. If both are there at 10? Trade out of the pick to a spot where you think the next guy will fall to.
by Andrew Davidson on Mar 13, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maclin?
I’d much rather trade down and take any of Heyward-Bey, Britt or Nicks over Maclin at 10.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Sure
I’ll buy into that.
Crab at 10, I like a lot.
Maclin at 10, I’m sure you could persuade me out of that notion. In fact, you did. If someone is knocking on our door at pick 10 looking for Maclin, I have no problems with the 49ers getting more picks in return.

Smith
With the approach the 49ers have taken this offseason, it looks like they’ll be moving one of Hudson or Smith to safety (or even both). The team has only two safeties on the roster (Lewis and Goldson), right?
by sfgfan on Mar 12, 2009 8:41 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Roman
I still think he’s with the team, just demoted and given the right to seek a trade. I’d imagine the Niners would like to keep him as a backup if no suitors are found for a trade.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Oh that's right.
In that case, it’s not as likely they’ll be shifting Hudson or Smith to safety, as I don’t think either would fit too well at SS.
